Fulham (a) SOLD OUT

Latest:
Saudis seek partners

Following claims by Reuters news that PIF were in talks to sell a minority stake in Newcastle United, The Times claim that up to 25% of their shareholding is in line to be sold.

They claim it "is seen as key in an attempt to get equity into the club before the announcement of a proposed £200m training ground at Woolsington and further talks on a possible new stadium that could cost more than £1bn."

The Times calculate that selling that shareholding could raise £300m+, based on the club's claimed value of £1.5bn and that the investment would be crucial to fund either a redevelopment of SJP or a brand new stadium.

2026/27:
More Murrayfield talk

Wednesday brought further claims of a pre-season fixture between Newcastle and Everton at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium, possibly on Wednesday August 12th.

A game on that date appeared on the Ticketmaster website before the linked page was taken down - neither club have confirmed the fixture as yet.

A pair of home friendlies over the weekend of August 15th/16th is anticipated, with Serie A side AS Roma and French League Strasbourg among rumoured opponents.

Update:
Euro hopes over

Chelsea's 2-1 victory over Spurs on Tuesday night means that the highest position that Newcastle can finish in on Sunday is ninth - ending their faint hopes of qualifying for next season's UEFA Conference League.

As a consequence of that, the Magpies will enter the Carabao Cup in the Second Round (dates tbc).

Championship:
Humber v Tees

Update
: Southampton's appeal against their expulsion and points deduction was dismissed on Wednesday evening.

Earlier: Having admitted to three counts of spying on opposition training sessions this season, Southampton were expelled from the Championship playoff final by an independent disciplinary commission on Tuesday.

As a consequence Hull City will face Middlesbrough at Wembley on Saturday (3.30pm) for a place in the Premier League alongside Coventry City and Ipswich Town. They have also been deducted four points next season.

Update:

Leazes Terrace latest

From NUFC, Tuesday:

Newcastle United has completed the purchase of a significant portion of the historic Leazes Terrace building next to St. James' Park (for a claimed £25m).

The acquisition of a substantial majority of the Grade I listed structure includes its northern, southern and western elevations – including all areas facing the stadium.

It also includes most of its eastern elevation, with a small block of private residences remaining in this part of the building.

This strategic purchase is part of the club's long-term planning as it continues to assess all credible and feasible options for the future of its home stadium.

It provides Newcastle United with greater flexibility and ensures any future decisions support the club's ambitions, as well as its responsibilities to the local community and the city of Newcastle upon Tyne.

The club recognises the building’s historic and architectural significance and is committed to its preservation.

There are no plans to change the current use of Leazes Terrace, which is currently let for student accommodation, and the club will retain the building’s existing property management operator.

The investment to purchase Leazes Terrace does not impact the club's football trading position.

This will doubtless fuel speculation that a redeveloped SJP including an enlarged East Stand could be in the offing, as opposed to a new stadium built elsewhere.

As stated in the press release though, it's only a part purchase and the building retains Grade 1 listed status, which remains a significant barrier to redevelopment regardless of who owns it.

It may be more realistic to see this in the context of the land acquisition around Strawberry Place; a strategic move future-proofing an area bordering SJP for PIF, regardless of whether the football club remain there in the future.

Newcastle's final Premier League game of the season takes them to the banks of the Thames on Sunday.

In common with the rest of the Premier League fixture programme, it's a 4pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports.

All 2,701 away tickets at Craven Cottage are now sold.

The Magpies conclude their away programme in London for a fourth successive season, having won one, drawn one and lost the other of the earlier trio.

2019 and 2021 saw them similarly wrap up proceedings by collecting maximum points at Fulham.

Eddie Howe's side can still finish as high as ninth in the table, but their hopes of European qualification are over.

Team: Lewis Miley, Valentino Livramento, Emil Krafth, Fabian Schar and Joelinton are all expected to miss out.

Coral rate this game as follows:

Stats:

Newcastle have scored 17 times in their 18 PL games on the road this so far this season, less than half of their 2023/24 total of 36 and inferior to last season's tally of 28.

Were they not to find the net on Sunday, that total of 17 would be the fewest since the 2015/16 relegation season when they scraped up to 12.

18 PL fixtures away from SJP have harvested 17 points, via four wins and five draws. That compares unfavourably with last season's final total of 28 points, but success in SW6 would see United match 2023/24's 20 point haul.

Wooden spoon avoided

Newcastle's debut at the International U19 football tournament in the Swiss town of Altstatten saw them record a seventh place finish at the eight team event.

The Magpies began their three group games on Friday by defeating Danes Brondby 1-0, defender Henry Johnson on target with four minutes of the scheduled 40 to play.

0-1 defeats by Croatians Dinamo Zagreb and Swiss side St.Gallen left United bottom of their four team group, consigning them to a 7th/8th place playoff on Saturday against Nottingham Forest.

That finished 2-0 to Newcastle, thanks to goals from Kyle Fitzgerald and Kacey Wooster.

ST waiting list open now

NUFC confirm that the season ticket waiting list for next season is now open, with a minimum of 250 available.

Entry to the waiting list is restricted to members, who can sign up until Sun 31.05.2026.

A ballot will then take place with entrants placed in priority groups according to criteria set by the club. Ballot winners can then purchase season tickets from Wed 10.06.2026.

While the purchase of a 2026/27 membership isn't required to join the waiting list, anyone who doesn't win this ballot would need to continue paying for membership in order to maintain their place in the queue for future ST releases.

While the minimum figure of 250 for 2026/27 is set, there's no mention of how many STs will be offered thereafter.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.

Only those within the new loyalty point total are eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

PL away ticket prices will remain unchanged at £30 for both 2026/27 and 2027/28.

On This Day in History
20th May

Born Or Died:

1883 Richard Harker born, Wardley.
(1903-05)

Spotted playing in local football, this inside forward joined United after impressing as a trialist ahead of the 1903/04 season.

Initially signed as an amateur, Dick agreed professional terms during 1904 and was a regular starter for the reserves side.

Promoted to the first team for a 1-2 friendly home loss to Corinthians in January 1905, he was declared surplus to requirements that summer and signed for Southern League side Crystal Palace.

And he was in their lineup for a notable 1-0 win on Tyneside in the FA Cup First Round in 1907 - one of several players with local links recruited by Palace's Durham-born trainer Jack Robson.

Harker looked set for a return to Gallowgate in May of that year, when it was reported that he'd re-signed for the Magpies.

That move was blocked by the Football League however and he instead moved to Scotland with Hibernian for the sum of £75.

Joining Edinburgh rivals Hearts in 1909, he returned to Crystal Palace two years later before moving on to Darlington in 1912.

Serving in the Northumberland Fusiliers from 1914, Richard and had reached the rank of Lance Corporal when listed as missing in action during April 1917.

H
arker's
body was never found and he's commemorated on the Arras Memorial in France.

1957 Mark McGhee
born, Glasgow, Scotland. (1977-79, 1989-91)

One of two young Scottish strikers signed by United during their unsuccessful bid to avoid relegation, Mark came from Greenock Morton for £150K in December 1977.

Debuting in a 2-0 win at Leeds, McGhee managed three goals in 18 outings and showed flashes of his potential (unlike fellow new arrival Mike Larnach from Clydebank).

Confined largely to the bench the next season after the arrival of Peter Withe, Mark managed only two more goals before joining Aberdeen for £80K in March 1979.

Linking up with Alex Ferguson at Pittdorie, McGhee collected a European Cup Winners' Cup medal with the Dons in 1983 in addition to Scottish league and cup titles.

A goalscoring debut for Scotland came in a friendly against Canada in Vancouver during June 1983, but he would win just three more international caps in the following year.

Moving on to Hamburg, a four year stint at Celtic from 1985 saw McGhee add further league and cup medals to his haul, before returning to SJP for £200K in July 1989.

Bought to partner fellow new signing Mick Quinn, the scouser was quicker to settle and had reached double figures before Mark opened his account at Hull in September.

However McGhee was to weigh in with a respectable 27 goals in a combined total of 59 in all competitions as United made it to the playoffs before losing to the mackems.

The 1990/91 season was less successful for Mark, scoring just five goals and suffering injury problems; Tommy Gaynor, David Mitchell, Paul Moran and Andy Hunt all deputising for him.

McGhee's final game proved was a 0-3 loss at Notts County in April 1991, after which he underwent operations on both hips and brief
joined IK Braga in Sweden in an attempt to regain match fitness.

Returning to the UK, he looked set to join Hearts until becoming player/boss of Reading on the recommendation of Fergie.

Leicester City offered him the chance of a Premier League job and he controversially left Reading in December 1994 to manage the relegation-threatened Foxes.

City still tumbled though and McGhee went to manage Wolves, flirting with both promotion and relegation before leaving Molineux during 1998.

Two years of rotten TV punditry followed before taking charge of Millwall and later moving on to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Later stints north of the border saw him take charge of Motherwell and Aberdeen before the latter dumped him in December 2010.

McGhee took charge of Bristol Rovers in early 2012 but was jettisoned by the Pirates less than twelve months later.

Appointed assistant to Scotland boss Gordon Strachan, he combined that with a second spell at Motherwell from October 2015.

However, Mark fell victim to the Fir Park axe once again in February 2017, continuing in his national team role assisting Strachan.

That ended in October 2017 after failing to achieve World Cup qualification, but barely a month later McGhee was back in club management with League Two Barnet.

Following eight defeats in ten games, he switched to a Director of Football role in January 2018 but lasted just two months before being shown the door.

He agreed to take over at Eastbourne Borough until the end of the 2018/19 season in an interim role and although they only won one of 11 remaining games they retained their National League South status. McGhee left at the end of the season.

In January 2021, Mark joined Stockport County as Assistant Manager to Simon Rusk but had left by the following October.

Dundee appointed McGhee as manager in February 2022 but after just one win in 14 games The Dee were relegated to the Scottish Championship and his contract was not renewed.

1990 Florian Lejeune born, Paris, France.
(2017-21)

Central defender signed from Spaniards Eibar on a five year deal in July 2017 after United met a claimed €10M release clause.

Parisian Lejeune played second tier football in his home country for Istres before joining Villarreal B during 2011, debuting for their first team soon after.

Loaned out to French side Brest in 2013 before returning to Spain on a permanent basis with Girona a year later, 2015 saw him acquired by Manchester City.

However that deal was seemingly concluded as a favour to an agent who had a stake in Girona - and Florian was instantly loaned back to them.

Signing a four year contract with Eibar, he became a regular starter there and helped them to finish tenth in the Primera League.

First sighted for Newcastle in pre-season at Hearts, his introduction to the Premier League lasted just 34 minutes before a scything tackle from Spurs striker Harry Kane sidelined him for several months.

Returning to
form a solid partnership with Jamaal Lascelles, he helping United up to tenth after a strong finish to the season.

A knee injury sustained during pre-season then sidelined Lejeune until January 2019, but he made a successful return to action and featured in our memorable home victory against Manchester City.

Sadly Florian's injury curse would strike once again in his 13th game back, rupturing knee ligaments in his other knee against Crystal Palace at SJP in April.

An injury crisis forced his return in December 2019, when he looked rusty to say the least. Thankfully he adapted quickly and bagged a memorable brace in added time at Everton to steal a point.

Returning to Spain in September 2020 on a season-long loan to Deportivo Alaves, Lejeune wasn't recalled despite a defensive injury crisis at Gallowgate.

He remained on loan to play a key role in Alaves avoiding relegation from La Liga; shoring up the back line while old boy Joselu scoring vital goals up front.

A permanent move to Alaves followed in July 2021 but Florian - and Joselu - were unable to prevent their relegation in 2022.

Remaining in La Liga after agreeing a season-long loan to Rayo Vallecano, he made that move permanent during July 2023 for a reported £2m fee.

Almost ever-present in four seasons and netting 12 goals, Florian's 35th birthday found him preparing for what would be the first trophy of his senior career - facing Crystal Palace in the Europa Conference League Final.

The third of Newcastle's five post-season games in Copenhagen was played at the home of the B93 club in bright sunshine.

1947 Newcastle announced the appointment of George Martin as first team manager.

1972 Among the scorers in England's 4-0 win over West Germany in a schoolboy international  at Wembley was 15 year-old John Trewick.

The Bedlington native at that time was a striker and had agreed to join West Bromwich Albion as an apprentice. He'd come "home" to join Newcastle in 1980.

Match two of the post-season tour of the Far East saw United registering a second win in 72 hours against their hosts in Kuala Lumpur.

The Magpies then played twice in Thailand against local sides, before heading to Japan to play in the Kirin Cup (aka the Japan Cup).

1990 Four days after their playoff loss to the makems, Newcastle were at Evenwood's Welfare Ground for a Sunday afternoon kickabout.

The occasion was a benefit game for SJP old boy Jackie Bell, United beaten 2-4 by a Non-league select XI in a light-hearted affair.

John Burridge began the game in goal but ended up as an outfield player, while both Kevin Brock and Bjorn Kristensen donned the gloves at various times.

Ill-health meant that Bell was unable to attend (and would pass away within a year) but former Magpies Len White and Gordon Hughes were present - as was a certain Eric Gates.

(NB: The game was originally scheduled for May 6th but postponed for two weeks - the original programme was used).

Team: Burridge, Mason, Sweeney, Kristensen, Scott, Brock, O'Brien, Askew, Brazil, McGhee, Quinn. Subs: (usage tbc) Howey, Roche, Robinson, Parkinson, Wright.

1994 United made the first of numerous applications to the Department of Employment for a work permit as they looked to secure the services of USA goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

All attempts proved fruitless (as had earlier efforts by Nottingam Forest) and a further application by the mackems was also denied.

Friedel continued his quest to play in English football and eventually joined Liverpool who acquired paperwork in late 1997 on appeal.

1996 Newcastle's Tino Asprilla netted to give his Colombia side a 1-0 friendly win over Scotland at the Orange Bowl in Miami.

The game was a final warm-up for the Scots before their Euro 96 campaign, with future Magpie Kevin Gallacher featuring.

1997 Irish international goalkeeper Shay Given agreed to join Newcastle from Blackburn Rovers for a £1.5m fee set by tribunal after the clubs failed to agree a valuation for the free agent.

24 hours later, Given won his ninth senior cap in a 5-0 win over Liechtenstein.

The mackems were apparently interested in signing Shay, who had appeared for them while on loan, but seemed to have some difficulty in raising the fee....

2004 The dream was over for Michael Bridges after Newcastle opted not to offer a contract to the striker for the following season. The player had failed to impress during a  three month loan spell from Leeds United.

2006 Some amazing quotes from odious Aston Villa boss, David O'Leary, talking up James Milner's supposed move to Villa Park.

Under the title of "Milner wants me as manager", the conceited O'Bleary was quoted as saying:

"The only assurance James asked was ‘how long am I [O'Leary] going to be at Villa, how long is my contract?’

"His agent also rang me and asked the same question, but it is not just me. He worked under Roy Aitken at Leeds. Roy had him under his wing as a kid.

"His mum and dad know us. He said if he was to commit himself to a four year contract, he wanted assurances about us.

"I’ve said to him I’ve got two more years left here of my contract and I expect to be here for that two years. When his people were in there talking to the club, they got those assurances themselves.

"What they were checking with me was that I wasn’t going to go off my own bat. They were asking me if I had any plans elsewhere for myself."

"Everyone knows what I think about James and we hope a deal can be done but, as I have always said, the ball is in Newcastle’s court. He is their player.

“We have spoken to Newcastle and know the fee involved and hopefully we can get a deal done. James has told me he wants to come here. He wants to sign and we are keeping our fingers crossed.”

Bobby Robson bought Milner from Leeds in July 2004 for a quoted £5m and although Graeme Souness seemed not to favour Milner, Glenn Roeder said:

"We don't have to rush into making a decision on James. James had a very good season at Villa and has impressed David O'Leary.

"But I'll be sitting down with the chairman at the end of the week to discuss the whole squad, including James."

In the end, Milner stayed longer than both O'Leary and Roeder before controversially moving to Villa Park in 2008.

2008 Joey Barton was given a six month sentence for assault and affray after an incident in Liverpool six months earlier.

Jailing the 25-year-old Huyton-born midfielder, Judge Henry Globe said: "You delivered many blows and were acting in an extremely violent and aggressive manner."

2012 Newcastle's first appearance at the Hong Kong Soccer Sevens turned out to be a memorable one, as they won the trophy, beating Aston Villa 2-1 and depriving them of a sixth title in ten years.

A 1-0 semi-final win over the mackems put United into the final against a Villa side whom they'd beaten in the group stages 24 hours earlier. Goals from Adam Campbell and Brad Inman then clinched the cup.

2015
A 0-0 draw at Arsenal confirmed top flight survival for the mackems - and lefy the final relegation spot to be decided between Newcastle and Hull City.

It also realistically ended any hopes that Manchester United's would overhaul the Gunners to seal third place, meaning the Red Devils would have little to play for on the final day at a Tigers side managed by old boy, Steve Bruce.

2017 35,361 fans witnessed the opening day of Rugby League Magic Weekend at SJP - the third successive year that Gallowgate had hosted the two day event.

2018 The fourth Rugby League Magic Weekend at SJP concluded with 25,438 present - the smallest crowd for any of the eight days of play there since 2015.

2023 Aston Villa - the team that love to glory in bringing about Newcastle's demise - did the Magpies a massive favour by drawing 1-1 with Liverpool at Anfield.

That meant Eddie Howe's side needed just one more point from the remaining two games to be mathematically certain of Champions League qualification
