Premier League:
Manchester United (h)

Wednesday sees Michael Carrick bring his Red Devils to Gallowgate for an 8.15pm kick-off, live on TNT Sports.

Hat sellers Football Bobbles will have a stall outside the Trent House pub from 5pm. Card payments accepted.

The Magpies will be aiming for their fourth successive home league win over Manchester United, something that they haven't achieved since 1931.

Less positively, they will hope to avoid a fourth successive home league defeat - something they haven't endured since the 2018/19 campaign, when they kicked off with five SJP reverses in a row under Rafa Benitez.

Since the last meeting of the two sides - a 1-0 home win at Old Trafford on Boxing Day - Manchester United have played 11 games in all competitions. Newcastle have played 18.

Team: Nick Woltemade is doubtful due to illness but Jacob Ramsey has recovered from a similar issue that forced him off during Saturday's game against Everton.

Tino Livramento and Lewis Miley are nearing returns this month, with Fabian Schar and Bruno Guimaraes further off. Emil Krafth's season is over.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 7/5
The draw 27/10
MUFC win
17/10

MUFC:
Mason Mount, Patrick Dorgu and Matthijs de Ligt remain unavailable, with Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez doubtful.

Since he took caretaker charge in mid-January (assisted by former Magpie Jonathan Woodgate), Michael Carrick's side have won six PL games and drawn the other.

A 1-0 home win over Newcastle on Boxing Day began Manchester United's current 11 game unbeaten PL run.

Bryan Mbeumo has scored in his most recent two PL appearances against Newcastle, when a Brentford player.

Benjamin Sesko has scored in his last three appearances.

Referee:
Peter Bankes  - a fifth encounter of the season with the Lancastrian official, after the draw at Leeds, home wins over Forest and Fulham and the derby loss.

Premier League:
TV times due

Assuming that the Premier League adhere to their own published schedule, fixture amendments for April should appear on Wednesday of this week.

A trio of Newcastle games are "at risk" as follows:

Sat 11.04.2026 tbc Crystal Palace (a)*
Sat 18.04.2026 tbc Bournemouth (h)
Sat 25.04.2026 tbc Arsenal (a)+^

* this would move were Palace to be in UEFA Conference League Quarter-final action on Thu 09.04.2026.

+ progress to the Champions League Semi-final for either side would potentially affect the scheduling of this game, with CL SFs on Tue 28.04.2026 and Wed 29.04.2026.

^ progress to the FA Cup Semi-final for either side would see this game postponed due to a fixture clash.

There are no scheduled rail engineering works between Newcastle and London on any of those weekends.

(Victory over Manchester City on Saturday would see the Magpies in FA Cup Sixth Round action on or around Saturday April 4th. Defeat would leave them with a free weekend).

Premier League:
Fulham (a) train update

FYI anyone planning to attend United's PL season-closer at Fulham on Sunday May 24th by train, as yet no timetable has been published and train tickets aren't yet available.

FA Cup:

Newcastle's FA Cup Fifth Round tie against Manchester City will be at St. James' Park on Saturday.

It's an 8pm KO, live on TNT Sports.

A result must be reached on the day, with 30 minutes extra time played if the score is level at 90 minutes. The tie will then be settled via a penalty shootout if required.

Hat sellers Football Bobbles will have a stall outside the Trent House pub from 5pm. Card payments accepted.

Ahead of their third visit to Gallowgate this season, City host Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Pep Guardiola's side reached this point in the competition thanks to a pair of home wins against EFL sides: 10-1 against Exeter City and 2-0 against Salford.

The visitors were allocated 4,893 tickets.

Referee: Sam Barrott - a third Toon posting of the season to date for the Yorkshire official, following the 2-1 Premier League home victory over Manchester City and 0-0 draw away at Wolves.

In total, Barrott has taken charge of five senior games involving United - and they are yet to lose one.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.
2025/26 CL away tickets are €50 or less.

On This Day in History
3rd March

Born Or Died:

1886 James Edmundson Raine born, Newcastle (1903,1904-06).

Right-sided forward who was on amateur forms at SJP, having played football while studying at both Harrogate and Sheffield.

Briefly with Newcastle in 1903, a longer association with the club came the following year, after having played one senior game in the colours of Sheffield United.

Debuting in place of Jackie Rutherford in a 1-0 loss at Middlesbrough in March 1906, the player known as Joe featured in three more games that season - netting his only goal in the last of those, a 3-0 home victory over Blackburn Rovers.

Later appearing in the Football League for Sunderland and Glossop North End, Raine also played for Bohemians (Newcastle), Reading, Stalybridge Rovers and South Shields.

Playing cricket for Benwell and Northumberland county and also rugby for Percy Park, he won international honours with the England amateur football team.

Living in Jesmond after ending his playing days and managed the Raine family steelworks on the banks of the Tyne, Jimmy rose to the rank of Major in the Durham Light Infantry during WW1.

His unexpected death came while visiting the Swiss ski resort of Davos in September 1928.

An obituary published in The Journal referred to him as a "brave soldier, sportsman and good employer."

1903 Duncan Hutchison born, Kelty, Scotland. (1929-32)

"Hurricane Hutch" is more revered by the supporters of Dundee United than Newcastle, thanks to an association with the Tannadice club that spanned some six decades.

Signed from Dunfermline in 1927, his sale to The Magpies two years later for £4,050 led to protests and match boycotts among Dundee United fans.

Hutch partially reproduced the goalscoring form that had brought him to Tyneside, but within a year of his arrival had seen fellow Scotsman Hughie Gallacher leave United - and he proved to be a tough act to follow.

After spells at Derby County and Hull City, Hutchison re-signed for Dundee United in 1935 and played on until 1939, running "The United Bar" in the city upon his retirement.

Appointed to the Board at Tannadice in 1953, he remained in post until his death in 1973 - serving for a time as their Chairman.

1933 Stewart Mitchell born, Glasgow, Scotland. (1953-63)

Goalkeeper signed from the Govan-based Benburb club who acted as understudy at various times to Ronnie Simpson, Bryan Harvey and Dave Hollins.

His debut saw United draw 3-3 at Preston and he also conceded four goals in each of his next three outings.

Mitchell returned to Scotland with Third Lanark as part of the Dave Hilley deal.

However, his transfer didn't go through until some eight months after Hilley's arrival, with Stewart eventually moving to Cathkin Park in lieu of the proceeds of a promised friendly match against United that was never played.

Forced to quit the game in 1965 due to injury, Mitchell was present at Ibrox to see United's 0-0 draw in the Fairs Cup four years later.

Living in the town of Hamilton following his playing retirement, Stewart worked in the financial services sector. He passed away in January 2023.

1990 Emmanuel Riviere, born, Le Lamentin, Martinique (2014-17)

United's fifth close season signing of 2014 saw this alleged striker arrive from AS Monaco for an undisclosed fee.

Riviere had left his home on the Caribbean island of Martinique - an overseas territory of France - to join St.Etienne in 2005.

A senior debut came in April 2009 and his first selection for France at U21 level the following year saw him line up with future SJP colleague Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

Making a £4.7m switch to Toulouse in July 2011, he played with Moussa Sissoko there and was an U21 colleague of both Massadio Haidara and Remy Cabella.

A mid-season move to Monaco (then in the second tier of French football) in January 2013 cost £3m and he scored four times to help them win the title.

Emmanuel then netted thirteen times in the 2013/14 season (ten in Ligue 1) including a hat trick against Montpellier as Monaco finished runners up to PSG.

Joining United on their pre-season tour of New Zealand, he made a scoring bow in a 4-0 win over Sydney United in Dunedin.

Riviere struggled in his first season with just two goals in 30 outings - in the League Cup at Crystal Palace and at QPR in the Premier League, the latter flukish.

Injury sidelined him until January 2016, a trio of unproductive outings under Steve McClaren and three unused substitute selections by the incoming Rafa Benitez then following.

Shipped off to Spaniards Real Osasuna on a season-long loan during August 2016,  Riviere failed to find the net in 17 appearances as they were relegated.

The misfit was permanently jettisoned a year later though, securing his release from United before signing for French side Metz.

Rather improbably he marked his debut with a goal against Paris St. Germain - before reality intervened and he missed an open goal. PSG ultimately won 5-1.

Released in 2019, the free agent joined Italian Serie B side Cosenza alongside our season-long loanee, Achraf Lazaar.

Riviere left Cosenza in favour of Serie A side Crotone in September 2020, signing a two-year contract. However, this was terminated by the club in October 2021 for what they deemed "serious misconduct" after failing to return to the club.

Five days after their League Cup Final loss at Wembley to Manchester City, Newcastle returned to league action.

In their first fixture since the 1-4 home derby loss, United repaid the faith of those fans who returned to the scene of the crime, although the crowd was almost 20,000 less than the mackem game.

Those who were tempted back saw Mick Martin net his first goal for the club, his shot deflecting off the foot of the Addicks goalkeeper and trickling into the Leazes net.

Shola Ameobi's first goal was scored with his first touches after appearing as a half time replacement for the hamstrung Craig Bellamy.

And the night was memorable for Martin Brittain, Bobby Robson giving the reserve midfielder a senior debut when substituting him for the underwhelming Michael Bridges.

For United it was a case
of two points lost, as they squandered the best chances in what was a game of few chances.

At the other end Shay Given had one of his quietest days with the visitors offering little or no attacking threat.

However, Obafemi Martins and Kieron Dyer couldn't make the vital breakthrough, while Glenn Roeder delayed bringing Antoine Sibierski off the bench until near the end.

On-loan Oguchi Onyewu partnered Titus Bramble in central defence, with an unusual full back pairing of Nobby Solano on the right and Steven Taylor filling in on the other side.

2021
The Mail newspaper reported that: "Steve Bruce and Matt Ritchie were involved in a sensational training ground showdown in which the Newcastle boss physically confronted the winger and barged into him after being called a 'coward' by the player."

The incident came 72 hours after a 1-1 home draw with Wolves, when Bruce had blamed Ritchie for not relaying instructions after
arriving from the bench - result
ing in Wolves scoring.

Media claims of tensions at the training ground emerged at the time, notably the reaction of Karl Darlow to discovering via the press that he'd been dropped.
