Premier League:
Brighton (h)

Newcastle play their penultimate Premier League home game of the season this afternoon when Albion head north.

It's a non-televised 3pm kick-off.

Hat sellers Football Bobbles will have a stall outside the Trent House pub from Noon. Card payments accepted.

The Magpies have failed to beat the Seagulls in any of the last six league and cup meetings at home and away, losing to them in both PL and FA Cup at Gallowgate last season.

Danny Welbeck scored in both of those Brighton victories and also hit a brace when his side beat United 2-1 at the Amex Stadium last October.

Eddie Howe's side are looking to avoid a fifth successive defeat in the PL, something they last endured back in January 2021.

They go into the game 15th in the table, dropping one place after Leeds United beat Burnley on Friday night.

Team: Joelinton is available following his two match suspension and Anthony Gordon is back training and predicted to rejoin the matchday squad.

Tino Livramento, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth remain out.

BHAFC: Solly March may return but James Milner, Adam Webster, Diego Gomez and Stefanos Tzimas are all out.

Fabian Hurzeler's side have a ten day break ahead of their visit to Tyneside, with a blank weekend caused by their opponents Chelsea making it to the FA Cup Semi-finals.

The rearranged game ended in 3-0 victory for Albion, extending their unbeaten run to five games.

Referee: Chris Kavanagh - fifth league and cup game of the season involving Newcastle for the Yorkshire whistler.

On Tyneside he presided over a 1-0 win against Wolves, 2-0 Carabao Cup win against Spurs and 0-2 reverse at the hands of Manchester City in the same competition.

Kavanagh also took charge of the 3-1 FA Cup success at Aston Villa, a tie that we won despite a series of glaring errors.

Howay the lad

Following his previous success with "The Boy on the Shed", former Magpie Paul Ferris has been nominated once again for the annual Sports Book Awards.

His memoir "Once Upon A Toon" has made the shortlist for the Sports Entertainment Book of the Year, the winner of which will be decided by a public vote.

Paul is up against some big hitters in the shape of Phil Tufnell and Martin O'Neill so every vote is vital.

Votes can be placed until May 7th

Premier League:
West Ham (h) confirmed

Newcastle's final Premier League home game against West Ham has been belatedly confirmed as a 5.30pm kick-off on Sunday May 17th, live on Sky Sports.

Update:
French leave

Lorient coach Olivier Pantaloni has thrown some light on the ill-fated loan spell that Newcastle teenager Trevan Sanusi has endured in France this season:

"He arrived injured and it dragged on.Then, we mustn't forget that he's a young player, arriving from a foreign country, who doesn't speak the language.

"He found himself in a group that has been working together for a long time, with playing principles and training methods that are perhaps different from those at Newcastle. It was difficult for him.

"I think it's going to be difficult (for him to add to his five senior appearances). He's a kid who must have suffered from the situation. He's always persevered.

"If Newcastle took a chance on him, it's because they saw potential in him for the future.

"When you come from there, you want to play as much as possible. We didn't give him the opportunity because we felt he wasn't quite ready for Ligue 1."

Former Newcastle midfielder Scott Parker has left his position as Burnley manager following confirmation of their relegation from the Premier League.

The 45 year-old Londoner previously managed Fulham, Bournemouth and Club Brugge, taking charge at Turf Moor ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Newcastle U18s  2  Wolves U18s  1

United's U18 side completed a seasonal double over Wolves on Saturday as they maintained their hold on third place in the table, behind the two Manchester clubs.

Scoreless after 45 minutes at Little Benton, the young Magpies went ahead two minutes after the break through Alfie Hutchison, the Scottish forward having also netted in United's 2-0 win in the Black Country back in August.

What proved to be the winner for Chris Moore's side then arrived on 67 minutes when Muawiya Ghanem fired home, the 15 year-old midfielder marking his first U18 start with a debut goal at this level.

The visitors got a late goal through Saba in the 89th minute but the hosts held out through eight minutes of added time to collect all three points.

Introduced in the closing stages for his U18 debut was striker Leon Mukumbira, promoted from the U16 side.

Team: Dowell, Patterson, Gilligan (Tika-Lemba 90+5), Epia, Johnson (Old 66), Taylor (Callaghan 64), Hutchison (Mukumbira 80), Ghanem, Wooster, O'Donovan, Seldon.

Pre-season whispers

With plans for long haul warm-up games abandoned, the focus turns to whereabouts in Europe Newcastle will be preparing for next season.

After previous mention of Austria and Portugal, The Mail report that a training camp is planned at the Spanish resort of La Manga, with one associated friendly fixture.

The Chronicle meanwhile claim that Serie A side AS Roma have been invited to play at Gallowgate.

Update:
Hughton diagnosis

From The Mail, news of another recent prostate cancer diagnosis for an SJP old boy following that of Shaka Hislop:

Chris Hughton has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The 67-year-old received his diagnosis in April last year and underwent surgery to remove his prostate in May.

His cancer was detected early, and the operation has been a success. He has made a strong recovery and is once again cancer free.

Hughton, a former Tottenham and Republic of Ireland defender who had spells as manager of Newcastle and Brighton in the Premier League, wants to use his experience to raise awareness about the risks.

'The news certainly didn t scare me,' said Hughton as he discussed his health for the first time.

'I know everyone is different, but my first impression was "I ll be fine". I didn t instantly think "this is probably just going to kill me." I just thought, "OK, we ll have to do what we have to do".'

Hughton first picked up warning signs about his prostate when he was Brighton manager on a routine annual health check made available by League Managers Association to members.

He fell into a high-risk category: over 50 with family history of the disease and black. One in four black men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. He had blood tests to check his PSA (prostate specific antigens) levels every six months and has been a strong supporter of the Prostate Cancer UK charity for years.

Last year, the levels spiked and a subsequent scan detected cancer.

Hughton said: 'I had very good advice and all the treatment options were given to me, and I decided to have my prostate removed. The recovery has gone really well.

'I m one year post operation and I feel good. It s all gone very well. I ve got a lot of energy. Keeping active and busy is part of how I am anyway, but it s also about rehabilitation and keeping your mind active as well.

'I m very comfortable with my prognosis and my post operation feelings. I m in a really good place.'

Johan joins: official

From NUFC:

Newcastle United have completed a deal to sign Ecuadorian winger Johan Martinez from Independiente del Valle.

The 16-year-old will officially join the Magpies after his 18th birthday in the summer of 2027 (on May 10th) and will remain with Independiente del Valle in the meantime.

Johan was part of the Independiente del Valle youth team who won the Ecuadorian U17 title in December 2025.

Ross Wilson, Newcastle United Sporting Director, said:

"We re delighted to beat off serious competition from leading clubs across Europe to bring Johan to Newcastle United.

"Identifying and recruiting promising young players is a key part of how we build for the future, and our scouting and recruitment teams have worked diligently to secure Johan s signature.

"Independiente del Valle have a strong reputation for developing young players and Johan has undoubtedly benefited from that environment.

"He will continue his progress there while we maintain a close connection with his development, and we look forward to welcoming him to Newcastle next year.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.

Only those within the new loyalty point total are eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

PL away ticket prices will remain unchanged at 30 for both 2026/27 and 2027/28.

On This Day in History
2nd May

Born Or Died:

1944 Alan Suddick born, Chester-le-Street. (1961-66)

Joining United as a teenage apprentice, Alan became the club's youngest-ever debutant when appearing in a 4-1 home victory over Charlton Athletic in October 1961.

That same season he helped the club's youth side to FA Youth Cup success and became a regular choice in the number seven shirt.

Selected by England at U23 level during November 1962, Alan marked his debut with a goal in a 6-1 demolition of Belgium at Plymouth's Home Park.

Becoming a crowd favourite at SJP, Alan's contribution to the successful promotion campaign of 1964/65 was restricted due to a cartilage operation, but he scored six times in 21 appearances that season.

A poor start to life back in Division One saw Suddick switched to a central midfield role and hit the best scoring form of his Magpies career to help steer the club to safety.

When the following season threatened to go the same way however, manager Joe Harvey provoked a terrace outcry when selling Alan to Blackpool in a bid to raise transfer funds.

The purchases of John McNamee, Dave Elliott and Tommy Robson helped United rise up the table and laid the foundations for the side who would later win the Fairs Cup - but gone from the scene was the unique flair and talent of crowd-pleaser Suddick.

In a decade wearing tangerine, Alan helped the Seasiders gain promotion to Division One and taste European success in the Anglo Italian Cup - achievements which saw him dubbed "The King of Bloomfield Road".

Injuries began to take their toll on him and after moving on to Stoke City, Alan later appeared for Southport, Bury, Barrow and Lancaster - where he played in the same side as old boy Keith Dyson before retiring.

Alan later managed Barrow and coached at Blackpool, while away from football he was a hotelier for a while before becoming a painter and decorator - living in the town and regularly watching the Seasiders.

2008 saw Alan diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, but he was in remission following chemotherapy treatment.

Within months however it was reported that his condition had worsened
and he was admitted to the Manchester Royal Infirmary.

Alan passed away in March 2009 and former colleagues including Bobby Moncur were present at his funeral.

A memorial service on Tyneside was held a few days later, at which Moncur said:

"Alan had so much natural ability, great control, vision, balance, two great feet. He was slim and indeed lanky, which gave him the ability to come at you with the ball, little shimmy of the hips, glide past you, usually with a flash of his trademark toothy grin.

"One of his greatest assets was his ability to bend the ball at free kicks. Alan was bending the ball a long time before Beckham and don t forget it was a proper leather casey, not one of these Micky Mouse plastic jobs of today.

"He will live in my memory as a great talent, gentle albeit sometimes mischievous modest, caring man. If Alan had a fault as a footballer, it was because he was too nice."

That mischief-making was never more apparent than in a home game against Bury, when Alan yanked the shorts down of an opponent as he lined up in a defensive wall.

The Suddick family was again represented in black and white almost half a century later, Alan's grandson Lewis playing for United's academy and making one senior appearance - in pre-season at York City in 2016.

1959 Gary Megson born, Manchester. (1984-86)

Midfielder who began his career with Plymouth Argyle and moved on Everton in 1979, a further switch to Sheffield Wednesday following two years later.

Megson played under manager Jack Charlton before following him out of Hillsborough in 1984, signing for Nottingham Forest.

However he languished for five months at the City Ground without playing a game, Brian Clough reputedly saying he "couldn't trap a medicine ball" (other versions of the tale claim "a bag of cement"....)

That ended when Charlton took him to Newcastle at a cost of 130K, Megson debuting from the bench in a 0-1 loss at Southampton in November 1984.

Scoring his first Magpies goal during an FA Cup away at Forest early the following year, Megson's playing style could be described as functional and hard-working rather than flamboyant - as was fellow midfielder and former Owl, Pat Heard.

Following the sudden exit of Charlton in pre-season, Megson fell from favour and few wept when he returned to Sheffield Wednesday in a 60K move in late 1985 - agreeing an initial loan return just before playing for United reserves at Hillsborough.

Finding form again as an Owl, Manchester City paid 250K for Megson in early 1989 and he helped them to gain promotion to Division One that season - passing former club Newcastle going the other way.

Joining Norwich City on a free transfer in 1992, Gary became player/coach of the Canaries three years later and was appointed caretaker boss in April 1995.

Leaving Carrow Road that summer, he continued his playing career at Lincoln City and Shrewsbury Town before a brief stint as assistant manager at Bradford City.

Norwich then turned to him to fill their managerial vacancy in December 1995, before he took over at Blackpool.

Subsequent stints in charge of Stockport County, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City then followed, before Gary was appointed as Bolton Wanderers boss in October 2007.

However, he was never popular with Trotters fans and after his sacking in December 2009 found work as a TV and radio pundit.

A return to management with Sheffield Wednesday followed in February 2011, but he was surprisingly sacked a year later despite the Owls sitting third in League One and having just won the Steel City derby.

Taking time away from football, the summer of 2017 saw Megson back at Albion as assistant to Tony Pulis.

And following the departure of Pulis, Gary acted as interim manager and was in charge of the Baggies when Newcastle visited the Hawthorns in November 2017.

Within hours though he'd departed as Alan Pardew and John Carver were installed.

1962 Mickey Quinn born, Liverpool.
(1989-93)

Of all the footballers who have put their name to autobiographies, "Sumo" is one of those with a tale worth telling - and reading (in his publication "Who Ate All the Pies?")

Brought up on the Cantril Farm estate on Merseyside, his first football foray came as an apprentice with Derby County before turning pro with Wigan Athletic in 1979.

Earning a reputation for goalscoring at Stockport County and Oldham Athletic, Quinn moved to Portstmouth, where his off-field refuelling habits saw him end up behind bars, after breaching a drink-driving ban.

Jim Smith persuaded United to fork out 680K in summer 1989, pairing Quinn with returning striker Mark McGhee in an attempt to fashion an instant return to Division One.

Quinn famously netted four on his debut in a 5-2 win over Leeds United that some home fans boycotted due to the ongoing anti-board demonstrations.

And although the club missed promotion after playoff defeat to the mackems, Quinn's 34 goals in all competitions provided some solace (McGhee also grabbing 25 himself).

The following season brought him another 20 goal haul, but United struggled and finished in mid-table amid general uncertainty - with a failed share issue and Jim Smith's resignation seeing Ossie Ardiles arrive.

Quinn's October 1991 return to Fratton Park was to prove pivotal to his United career, as he slid into a post while scoring on a damp day and was sidelined until after Kevin Keegan's arrival the following February.

Although he played under Keegan that season, the pair didn't get on as Quinn failed to match the profile of professional player that KK wanted to sign (newspaper comments about the "shambles" at the club attributed to him hardly helped...).

Two months after his final goals for United (two in an Anglo Italian Cup win over Leicester City), Quinn joined Coventry City.

He skied his penalty over the bar when the two sides met at Highfield Road the following August in the Premier League, but continued to find the net - notably with a hat trick at Highbury, despite looking as if he'd borrowed a pair of shorts from City's elephant mascot.

Loan moves in 1994 took him to Plymouth and Watford without scoring, while he hung up his boots after a brief but turbulent time in Greece with POAK Thessaloniki.

Since then he's worked as a media pundit and racehorse trainer - although a neglect charge saw him lose his licence for the latter in 2001 for an 18-month period.

Our favourite non-goalscoring memory of Quinny remains his eating a pie chucked at him during a game at Grimsby - although others less fondly recall a 'V' sign directed at Toon fans at Bradford in 1990.

1978 Didier Domi born, Sarcelles, France. (1999-2001)

Left back signed from Paris SG for a 4m fee in late December 1998 as Ruud Gullit's squad overhaul continued.

Debuting in a 0-1 Premier League loss to Chelsea at SJP days later, Domi initially praised Tyneside, claiming that he'd rejected interest from London clubs as the capital city was too big and he'd get lost in it.

Newcastle though was apparently just the right size for him, although in retrospect locating a devout Muslim in a flat on the Quayside wasn't the cleverest move....

Ending his first season in England with an FA Cup runners-up medal, Didier retained his place in the side following the arrival of Sir Bobby Robson - netting four times in all competitions during 1999/00.

Things started to unravel ahead of the next season though, Domi ducking out of the US pre-season tour with a dubious injury

He then retreated to Paris, amid claims that local journalists, 'godless' fans and Robson's "out-dated" training methods had made his stay at United intolerable.

What proved to be his final appearance as a Magpie was a 0-5 rout away to Arsenal in December 2000, a public apology failing to mollify Robson.

United took a 1m hit returning Domi to PSG for 3m in early January 2001 but he failed to prosper and was loaned to Leeds United in 2003, making his debut against Newcastle at Elland Road.

That proved to be ill-starred, playing just 12 times as Leeds suffered relegation before exiting as a free agent following the expiry of his contract with PSG.

Joining Spanish side Espanyol, he did show some of his previous form before signing for
Olympiakos on a free transfer in 2006.

Released by the Greeks in 2010, Domi headed for the USA to join New England Revolution after a successful trial. He wasn't retained after summer 2011.

Ending his playing days, Didier worked as a pundit for beIN Sports, based in the Qatari capital, Doha.
He was also involved with PSG's youth Academy there.

1980 Fabrice Pancrate born, Paris, France. (2009-10)

Winger who joined United on free transfer in November 2009, following a successful trial during which he appeared in the reserve side against Hartlepool United at SJP.

The former Sporting Guingamp, Le Mans, Paris St.Germain, Sochaux and Real Betis player had found himself without a club at the start of the 2009/10 season.

Training with former club PSG, Fabrice had an unsuccessful trial with Sheffield United before pitching up on Tyneside.

After impressing Chris Hughton, Pancrate agreed a deal until the end of the season (with the club having an option to extend for another year) and debuted in the number 21 shirt as a sub against Swansea at SJP.

Pancrate's second senior outing saw him net a fine individual goal against Watford within 12 minutes of taking to the field.

That proved to be a high point in his time as a Magpie though and his pitch time decreased following the arrival of Wayne Routledge in the January transfer window.

What proved to be his final outing for the club came at Peterborough when he was substituted at half time. And a month later he celebrated his 30th birthday by watching his side end their season by winning at QPR.

Within days Newcastle confirmed that they weren't exercising their option and Pancrate became an ex-Magpie.

Aften an unsuccessful trial at Leicester City Fabrice signed a short-term deal with Greek side AE Larissa in February 2011.

After a period without a club, he then moved back to his native France with Nantes and played his last game for them in April 2014.

Pancrate later worked as a football pundit in the French media.

1991 Kieran Wrightson born, Newcastle.  (2006-09)

The son of former Magpies defender Jeff, midfielder Kieran joined United's Academy from Walker Central Boys Club in 2006.

A reserve debut came against Manchester United at Kingston Park in April 2007 but Kieran was released two years later after failing to win a professional contract.

After trials with Blyth Spartans and Durham City Wrightson joined West Allotment Celtic, later appearing for fellow Northern League sides Team Northumbria, Whickham, North Shields and Newcastle Benfield.

An FA Vase winner with North Shields at Wembley in 2015, Kieran was diagnosed with testicular cancer the following year and successfully underwent surgery.

1998 Victor Fernandez
born, Barcelona, Spain (2016-21)

Recruited from Spanish side UE Cornella, this fleet-footed winger was a low-key arrival on Tyneside in early 2017 but signed an undisclosed long-term contract.

First spotted playing for the U23s against West Bromwich Albion in February of that year, Victor got off the mark in his third reserve outing - scoring one and creating two more in a home win over Bristol City.

He then came to the attention of non-reserve watchers when featuring for the first team in a friendly against Royal Antwerp played in Spain in March 2018.

A hip injury sidelined Victor for most of the 2018/19 season but he returned to the U23s before being released in July 2020.

Appearing for Viitorul Constanta and Botosani in Romania, by 2021, Fernandez was back in Spain with UE Cornella.

A whistle-stop tour then saw him at Volos NFC (Greece), Enosis Neon Paralimni (Cyprus), Nea Salaminia (Cyprus), KF Tirana (Albania) and Niki Volos (Greece).

This was anything but a classic; the Shields Daily Gazette correspondent claiming that "The game dragged on in uninteresting fashion and the end was welcomed by players and spectators alike."

In similar vein, the Daily Chronicle reported that the Gallowgate crowd "became very sarcastic" as the predictable stalemate unfolded.

Neil McDonald made it five penalties out of five for the season when firing past Tom McAllister before Martin Thomas denied Tony Cottee from 12 yards at the other end after 28 minutes.

An acrimonious conclusion to the game saw Mark Ward net with a direct free kick, John Anderson sent off for abusing a linesman who failed to spot that the scorer had run the ball out of play.

That sparked unrest among the away following and play was briefly suspended while a pitch invasion was averted.

However, results elsewhere meant that our Division Two future was assured, regardless of the final score. Plymouth Argyle, Brighton and Port Vale were relegated, while Leicester went on to qualify for the playoff final but be beaten 1-0 by Blackburn Rovers at Wembley.
