Young Toon in
trophy triumph

Sunday
saw Newcastle's U15 side victorious in the Premier League
International Tournament - an eight team, two day event staged
at the Cobham home of Chelsea.
Qualifying with a 100% record after wins against Everton, Liverpool
and Burnley during which they netted 18 times, the young Magpies
began with a 2-0 win over Manchester United, Muawiya Ghanem and Jack
Skleton on target.
Charlie Robinson's treble and one from Ghanem then accounted for
Crystal Palace, who were defeated 4-0.
With qualification for Sunday's knockout stages virtually assured,
Saturday then concluded with a much-changed line-up losing 0-1 to
Juventus.
Following a 0-0 draw with hosts Chelsea on Sunday, the black and
whites then progressed on penalties, with goalkeeper Lucas Flack
making the vital save.
That set up a final against Manchester City; a first half header
from Ghanem sending the silverware to Tyneside.
PS: That's a second win over City U15s inside a month, after a
6-2 success in a Premier League Floodlit Cup tie.

Update:
Alex Cropley
RIP

The death of
former Magpie Alex Cropley has been confirmed. He was 75.
Arriving on Tyneside on loan from Aston Villa in January 1980, the
midfielder struggled to influence Newcastle's faltering bid to
gain promotion from the Second Division.
Struggling for fitness after several injuries, Cropley
made his Magpies debut in a 0-1 loss at Wrexham, keeping his place
for a 0-0 home draw against Birmingham City and a 1-3 reverse away
to Shrewsbury Town before exiting.
Winning two Scotland caps despite his Aldershot birthplace, Alex began his
career at Hibernian in 1969 before joining Arsenal five years later, where
he suffered two broken legs.
Sold to Aston Villa in 1976 he was part of their League Cup winning
side the following year.
After his brief loan spell at SJP, Cropley returned to Villa Park before
a year in Canada with Toronto Blizzard. A brief period with
Portsmouth was then truncated by injury.
Returning to Edinburgh, Cropley ran a pub in the Portobello area of the city
before becoming a taxi driver.
A dementia diagnosis sadly came in
December 2020.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a
ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.
The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division usually get two hours head start.
NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log
on and complete your purchase.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants are offered to applicants with a
reduced loyalty points total. Only those within the new loyalty point total are
then eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already
closed.
Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are
gone.
PL away tickets remain at £30 for the rest of this season, 2026/27 and

Born Or Died:
1957 Ian Davies
born, Nailsea, Bristol. (1979-82)
 Left-back
signed from Norwich City for £175K in 1979, having begun his
career at Clevedon Juniors - a feeder club for the Canaries in the South West
of England.
Representing Somerset at cricket during his teenage years, Davies opted for
football and was recruited to try and stiffen our defence, along with
Middlesbrough's Stuart Boam.
Almost an ever-present under Bill McGarry, Davies saw off the challenge of new
signing Peter Johnson to keep the number 3 shirt when Arthur Cox took
charge.
However, he subsequently lost out to Wes Saunders and was allowed to move on
from Gallowgate to Manchester City, just before the first arrival of
Kevin Keegan.
After just seven appearances at Maine Road though, Davies was shipped
out on loan to Bury, Brentford and Cambridge United.
A permanent move to Carlisle United came in 1984, followed by stints with
Exeter City, Yeovil Town, Bristol Rovers and Swansea City - the latter
move reuniting him with boss John Bond, who had given him his league
debut at Carrow Road and later took him to Manchester City.
However, Ian's career ended prematurely at the age of 30 while at the
Vetch, sustaining a badly
broken leg at Doncaster Rovers.
A former Welsh U21 international, Davies had a subsequent spell with
Gloucester City and later worked as a lorry driver.
1957 Death of Tom
Mather, 68.
Former manager. (1935-39)
Tom is renowned in the Potteries as the man who spotted a 14
year-old Stanley Matthews and signed for Stoke City on his fifteenth
birthday, allowing him to train with the players while earning £1 a
week working in the offices at the Victoria Ground.
It has been claimed that Mather tried to entice Matthews to join him on
Tyneside.
1968 Amilcar Ivanovic
born, Buenos Aires, Argentina. (1994)
Midfielder who joined United on trial during March 1994 from Velez Sarsfield in his native Argentina. Beginning his career with Atletico Platense, Ivanovic also played for Sarsfield and Racing Club. Failing to win a deal on Tyneside, he was similarly unsuccessful at Bundesliga side Cologne and joined Newell's Old Boys upon returning to Argentina. Moving on to All Boys in Buenos Aires, Amilcar reportedly
visited England for a fruitless trial at Stoke City during 1996. Later coaching clubs in Argentina and Paraguay, 2018 found him as a Technical Director of Spanish side UD Levante. 1969 Steve Guppy
born, Winchester.
(1994)

Failing to make a first team appearance while an apprentice at Southampton, winger Guppy
joined conference side
Wycombe Wanderers in 1989, managed at that time by Martin
O'Neill.
Helping the Chairboys to FA Trophy success and the Conference League
title in 1993, Guppy was an ever-present as Wycombe gained a second
successive promotion before Newcastle successfully bid £150K for him in
July 1994.
After an encouraging start when appearing in the pre-season
tournament at Ibrox just days later however, Guppy found himself unable
to break into the first team.
His sole competitive appearance came as substitute in a 2-0 home League
Cup win over Manchester United in late October.
Frustrated at his inactivity, Guppy made a permanent switch to second
tier Port Vale during November 1994 and played over a century of games for the
Valiants.
Former boss Martin O'Neill then returned for Steve during March 1997, his Leicester
City side paying £850K for him.
A belated top-flight debut came weeks before his 28th birthday and
Kevin Keegan awarded him one England cap in October 1999, against Belgium
at the mackems.
Following O'Neill to Celtic in August 2001,
Guppy later appeared for Leicester again, Leeds United, Stoke City and Wycombe
again before a 2005 switch to the USA, with MLS side DC United.
A return to the UK came a year
later with Conference side Stevenage Borough, Guppy won an FA Trophy medal and
by 2007 was training with Aston Villa at the invitation of
Martin O'Neill while he sought a new club.
Back in the USA in a player/coach role with Rochester Rhinos,
Guppy hung up his boots at the age of 39 and joined the coaching staff at Colorado Rapids.
A further reunion with O'Neill followed in March 2012, with a
part-time coaching role at the mackems. Just over a year later though,
Steve lost his job following the arrival of Paolo Di Canio.
The appointment of O'Neill as joint boss of Ireland later that year then
inevitably saw Guppy appear on his backroom staff again.
O'Neill was relieved of his position in November 2018 and was then appointed
manager of Nottingham Forest with Guppy again on
the coaching staff.
However, the duo exited from the City Ground during June 2019, Guppy returning
for another stint in the USA - this time at MLS newcomers Nashville SC.
His time in Nashville working with Gary Smith ended in May 2024 when the
pair were sacked.

Rescheduled to a Monday due to FA Cup commitments,
Newcastle's visit to Anfield was described as "curiously
uneven" in the view of The Journal
reporter.
Both sides struggled with a heavy pitch and scoring
attempts verged on the farcical, save for the 13 minute
spell when all four goals were netted.
At 0-0, "the crowd became saucy and cried aloud
their jeering remarks" according to the Liverpool
Echo correspondent.

intent on going one step further than the previous season,
when they were the beaten finalists.
Their South Shields-born goalkeeper Sam Bartram would go

gaping.
Billy Whitehurst was then flagged offside as he touched in
a shot on the line before blazing another shot into the
Gwladys Street End.
Kevin Ratcliffe's trip on Glenn Roeder was then deemed to
be a penalty, only for future Toffee Peter Beardsley to
step up and whack the ball over Bobby Mimms' crossbar - his
