PL2:
Points shared

Result:
Leicester City U21s  2  Newcastle U21s 2

It's now just one defeat in six PL2 games for United under the guidance of interim coach Robbie Stockdale, after they shared four goals with the Foxes on Monday evening.

The Magpies went ahead after just 10 minutes through midfielder Kyle Fitzgerald before
Georgian teenager Vakhtang Salia doubled the lead 29 minutes into his competitive bow, heading home a Fitzgerald cross.

City halved the deficit five minutes after the restart, forward Kirsten Otchere firing past Aidan Harris from close range.

And it was 2-2 in the 77th minute, thanks to a shot from Lorenz Hutchinson.

Premier League
:
Palace (a) tickets

As now confirmed by Newcastle, our Premier League visit to Selhurst Park remains subject to alteration from the advertised 3pm KO on Sat 11.04.2026.

Were Palace to win their UEFA Conference League 16 tie versus AEK Larnaca on Thu 12.03.2026 / Thu 19.03.2026 they'd play
a Quarter-final first leg on Thu 09.04.2026.

That would then see their PL home game against the Magpies pushed back 24 hours to Sun 12.04.2026 - as happened for Palace's game against Leeds this weekend*.

(*That's categorised as a PL displaced fixture, meaning that it's a 2pm KO, televised live on Sky Sports. Newcastle's game would be similarly categorised if moved).

In the event that Newcastle were to defeat Barcelona in the Champions League, the scheduling of a Quarter-final second leg on Tue 14.04.2026 or Wed 15.04.2026 would also be a factor in when the Palace game is played. That's because UEFA take no account of domestic fixture scheduling when deciding the day that Champions League ties are played.

Unlikely lads:
Cobblers nobble Nobby

Former Magpie Kevin Nolan has been relieved of his duties as Northampton Town manager, following a poor run that has left the Cobblers in League One relegation zone.

Town's irector of Football Colin Calderwood - another SJP old boy - has taken interim charge at Sixfields Stadium.

PS: AFC Wimbledon report that their scout and ex-Newcastle defender Andy Thorn is recovering well after suffering a heart attack in February.

U18s:
Wooster wins it

Newcastle U18s  1  mackem U18s  0

Saturday saw United U18s avenge their 1-4 away derby loss with a single goal success in the return at Little Benton.

A 77th minute shot from Kacey Wooster divided the sides, the striker netting for a fourth successive game to reach double figures in all competitions this season.

The 17 year-old forward had spurned Newcastle's best two chances of the game, twice bearing down on goal only for visiting custodian Finn Robertson to block both efforts.

Wooster then opted to try and control a cross in the area midway through the second period, when the opportunity to test Robertson with a header looked to present itself.

However he made a decisive touch 13 minutes before full time, latching on to Ezra Tika-Lemba's cross from the right and finding the top corner of the mackem net.

The red and whites pressed for an equaliser but were denied by goalkeeper Roman Dowell and the goal frame, keeping out a corner kick in added time that was awarded by referee Jamie Cann after Dowell breached the eight second rule.

Team: Dowell, Tika-Lemba, Bloomer, Moran (Epia 46), Johnson, Cogdon, Pinnington, Callaghan (Hutchison 83), Wooster (Ndiweni 90+2), Gilligan (Morgan 69), Ferreira.

Fulham (a) rail update

FAO those planning to attend United's PL season-closer at Fulham by train, amended timetables are now online.

A three day line closure between York and Darlington in both directions (Sat 23.05, Sun 24.05, Mon 25.05) means that bus replacements between those two stations will run.

Unlike previous closures north of York, there don't look to be any direct services to and from Newcastle via Hartlepool.

Premier League :
Arsenal (a) update

Announcing that Newcastle's forthcoming visit to the Emirates Stadium has been selected by live UK TV, the PL note that the chosen 5.30pm Sky slot on Sat 25.04.2026

"Subject to participation in UEFA competitions and FA Cup."

Were Arsenal to win their FA Cup Quarter-final,
they would be in Semi-final action at Wembley that weekend and an alternative date would need to be found for our game.

Quite when that would be is dependent on the Champions League progress of both clubs.

We're not quite sure why the PL mention UEFA competitions for this game; a Saturday teatime slot not impinging on any potential involvement for either side in Champions League Semi-final slots on Tue 28.04.2026 or Wed 29.04.2026.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.
2025/26 CL away tickets are €50 or less.

Born Or Died:

1894 James Low born, Kilbirnie, Scotland. (1921-28)

One of eleven children, Jimmy was born on the West coast of Scotland in Ayrshire but brought up in Elgin over on the East coast, beginning his career with Elgin City.

A move to Hearts came in 1913, as he combined playing with a place at Edinburgh University, studying agriculture & science.

But within a year Jimmy joined the rest of his Tynecastle team mates in enlisting for military service, seeing action with the army in both France and Belgium and taking part in the Battle of the Somme.

Despite being wounded, Low was able to resume his playing career after World War I and moved on to Rangers in 1919.

Joining Newcastle during November 1921, he debuted during a scoreless home draw with Middlesbrough the following month and was a part of the side who beat Aston Villa in the 1924 FA Cup Final.

However after a dispute at SJP, Low retired from playing in 1928 and returned to live in Elgin - an FA commission handing out a meaningless suspension.

He died in 1960.

United claimed the Sheriff of London Shield in this forerunner of the Charity Shield, staged at Fulham's Craven Cottage ground.

Corinthians included 'keeper Tom Rowlandson, who had made one appearance for Newcastle in the previous season.

The superior fitness of the professionals saw United net three times in five minutes to secure the shield.

Team: Lawrence, McCracken, Carr, Gardner, Speedie, McWilliam, Rutherford, Howie, Appleyard, Brown, Gosnell.

Founded in 1898 as a meeting of the leading professional and amateur sides, a dispute between the FA and the amateur sides saw the competition (also known as the George Dewar Shield) suspended after this game.

Later brief revivals saw the game played in the 1930s and again during the 1960s, with Watford winning a ceremonial restaging in 1983 - against Corinthians.

Newcastle led 2-1 at the break thanks to Bill Curry (15) and Gordon Hughes (41), with Albion's Grant levelling in the 27th minute.

Curry and George Hannah made it 4-1 before Spence got one back on 68 minutes. Curry then completed his hat-trick with a 72nd minute shot.

"And here they come, this is what the Newcastle fans wanted...."

In commentator speak, the words of Hugh Johns aren't far away from being our "some people are on the pitch" sound bite.

The facts: Future mackem Ian Bowyer put the Second Division visitors ahead within 82 seconds. David Craig levelled but Forest led at half time thanks to Liam O'Kane.

Referee Kew then sparked unrest in the crowd when awarding a penalty at the Gallowgate End on 59 minutes, Pat Howard being sent off for pushing the official before George Lyall made it 3-1 from the spot.

That was the signal for angry Newcastle fans to burst out of the Leazes and invade the pitch, causing the game to be halted and the teams to leave the field.

It's alleged that Martin O'Neill was one of a couple of Forest players who took sly whacks as they scarpered - although he denied this when asked many years later.

Offered the chance of an abandonment, Forest players, Directors and manager Allan Brown were happy to play on and the tie restarted.

What follows is part of Magpies folklore.

1-3 became 2-3 on 78 minutes when McDermott converted a penalty. A crowd who scented blood roared United on and John Tudor levelled the tie with a fine diving header with nine minutes remaining.

With fans in an advanced stage of delirium, somehow Bobby Moncur hooked home a last minute effort to win the game - until Forest protested to the FA and the Lancaster Gate killjoys annulled the result the following week.

The tie was restaged at the neutral venue of Goodison Park on March 18th but ended scoreless, with Newcastle winning the replay at the same venue 1-0 on March 21st thanks to Supermac's goal.

As part of our punishment we were barred from playing FA Cup home games the following season.

In retrospect, the most remarkable thing about the pitch invasion is that Leazes enders managed to get across the clarty pitch in their sta-press trews and chelsea boots - speeding up as they reached the other end, before diving headlong into the Forest fans. The ringleader got a six month stretch.

NUFC.com reader John Duran recalls watching the action unfold from his place in the West Stand:

"The police were trying to control unrest in the Leazes where there was a bit of argy-bargy and put a number of people onto the edge of the pitch.

"A fat bloke who looked a bit 'tired and confused' undid his shirt and ran on the pitch, two young lads saw him and followed waving on the others. This became popular with those standing on the side of the pitch.

"A quick sprint down the pitch and dives into the Gallowgate seemed to be the order of the day."

Some years later John Tudor recounted the game as follows:

"We would never have won the game if the fans hadn't run on and the referee taken us to the dressing-room. We were 3-1 down and 10 men against 11. But, worse, we couldn't play because Bob Chapman and David Serella had a stranglehold on midfield.

"Mal and I hadn't had a kick but that was because there was no service. Terry Hibbitt, normally our top provider, was having a stinker. The Forest pair closed ground so quickly there was no space in which to work.

"In the tunnel there were whoops of delight from the Forest players. They thought they had won.

"In comparison, you could hear a pin drop in our dressing-room - until Joe Harvey burst in and demanded to know what we were going to do about it. We decided to gamble and push forward. There was nothing to lose.

"Forest let their concentration slip, they thought the job was already done, and they let us go a bit in midfield after the restart.

"Hibby struck a hard, low cross from the left and I dived full-length parallel to the ground and only a couple of feet off it to bullet a header home for the equaliser.

"Then in the final minute I crossed the ball, Mal headed it down, and who was there to score but Bob Moncur of all people. It was 4-3."
