Steur it up!

Thursday saw Newcastle confirm their third senior arrival of the
close season, paying an undisclosed fee for 18 year-old midfielder Sean Steur from
Eredivisie side Ajax.
The Dutch youth international
left Ajax's first team training camp on Tuesday after a deal was
agreed, flying into Tyneside ahead of his medical.
A fee of around £23m is claimed for Steur, who shares an agency with
current Magpies Harvey Barnes, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento plus
manager Eddie Howe.
Signing a five year deal, he'll wear squad number 14, vacant since a
certain Swedish striker exited last year.
A product of the Ajax academy, Sean made his competitive
senior team debut in February 2025, adding 25 appearances last
season including three in the Champions League.
He'll become the ninth Dutchman to represent United in the Premier
League era, after John Karelse, Patrick Kluivert, Tim Krul, Vurnon
Anita, Daryl Janmaat, Georginio Wijnaldum, Jetro Willems and current
Magpie Sven Botman.
The last permanent switch from Ajax to Newcastle came in August 2017
when Siem De Jong arrived at SJP - like brother Luuk a Dutch
international, but born in Switzerland.
Latest:
Manzambi deal claim

Media outlets in
Germany report that Bundesliga side Freiburg have accepted an offer
of £51m for midfielder Johan Manzambi from Newcastle.
The 20
year-old is currently at the World Cup Finals with Switzerland, but
sat out Tuesday's last 16 tie against Colombia due to a knee injury.
Sky Sports in the UK report that "agreement is close" but not
sealed.
Update:
Splitting the G
Almost a year to the day that David Ornstein revealed Liverpool's
interest in Alexander Isak, the same journalist took to social media
on Wednesday with similar claims regarding Newcastle's Bruno
Guimaraes and Arsenal.
As was the case back in 2025, no bid currently exists, but Ornstein
asserts the prospective purchasers are ready to offer a deal and the
player is keen on the transfer.
Having dealt efficiently and profitably with malcontented pair
Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, the onus is now on us to either
complete a hat-trick of high value sales or decisively end the
speculation and avoid repeating last year's saga.
The loss of the talismanic Brazilian would be a sizeable blow to
both Eddie Howe's plans and supporter confidence given how we
perform without Bruno, but allowing this window to run down without
decisive action one way or the other would be absolutely disastrous.
Bruno's sale would mean that all three captains who lifted
silverware at Wembley less than 18 months ago have gone - and while
Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles rightly left, a massive chunk
of knowledge and experience is being lost.
Younger signings may now be targeted, but a wise old head will also
need to be acquired, otherwise the senior player's committee will
end up consisting entirely of Dan Burn.
Rather than "Local Hero", "Cruel Summer" may be a more
fitting tune when the Magpies next take to the field....

Train Wreckers

A century on from the
General strike, a headline-grabbing incident in Northumberland
during May 1926 is dramatically recalled
at Newcastle's Theatre Royal this Sunday (12th).
"The Cramlington Train Wreckers" tells the true story of a
group of miners whose attempt to stop a coal train instead saw them
inadvertently derail a prestige passenger express - paying a heavy
price for their act of sabotage.
The last remaining seats are on sale
here
We had
two tickets to give away for Sunday's production and asked which passenger service the Train Wreckers derailed.
It was of course the Flying Scotsman and the winning entrant's name
will appear here asap.
The prize is tickets x2 to the 7.30pm performance of Cramlington
Train Wreckers on Sunday 12 July 2026 at Newcastle Theatre Royal.
Please see
here for further performance information.
The prize is for the above performance only and is not transferable
and no cash alternative will be offered.
Tickets will be emailed to the winner prior to the day of the
performance.
PS: Ahead of Sunday's show in Newcastle, there are also performances
in Derry on Thursday and Belfast on Friday.

season's Champions League was already known, the participation of
the French side has just been confirmed.
Strasbourg are in the process of appointing a new head coach after
Gary O'Neill left last month for Ipswich Town.
This is the fifth successive season United have rounded off
their preparations with a home double header:

TV times
The Premier League have now published the revised fixture schedule for live TV
covering August and September, with
Newcastle's opening four games all altered:
Sun 23.08.2026 Liverpool (h) 4.30pm Sky
Sat 29.08.2026 Spurs (a) 5.30pm Sky
Sat 05.09.2026 Bournemouth (h) 12.30pm TNT
Mon 14.09.2026 Leeds United (a) 8pm Sky*
Sat 19.09.2026 Hull City (h) 3pm no live UK TV
* if NUFC or LUFC are in the Carabao Cup Third Round and drawn
against a club in the Champions League (Arsenal, Aston Villa,
Liverpool, Manchester City or Manchester United), this game will be
on Sat 12.09.2026 @ 12.30pm.
Assuming both sides survive the Second Round, a final decision on
the PL game will rest on the Third Round draw, which takes place on
or around Tue 25.08.2026.
The possible move is because Carabao Cup Third round ties are once
again split over two weeks, the first clashing with Matchday 1 in
the Champions League Group stage.
PS: Although trains are scheduled to run as usual between Newcastle
and London on the day of the Spurs away game, Kings Cross station
will be closed the following day.
Update:
Hatters take Harrison
Having featured in the last three senior pre-seasons without going
on to make a competitive appearance for Newcastle, Harrison
Ashby's Magpie career is drawing to a close.
Now in the final 12 months of his contract at Gallowgate, the 24
year-old full back has agreed a season-long loan switch to League
One Luton Town.
Arriving from West Ham in January 2023, a pair of unused substitute
selections in the closing two Premier League games of the season
followed, before loans of varying effectiveness at Swansea City, QPR
and Bradford City.
Ashby is the second current player to leave on loan, after Odysseas
Vlachodimos returned to Seville. Confirmation of a further loan
switch to Cadiz for Antonio Cordero is awaited.
Update:
Academy scholars announced
Now let's meet the eight who are going to generate.... United's
latest intake of school leavers are as follows:
Roman Dowell and George Mair (goalkeepers), Lesecond Yeutembip
(defender), Chukwudi Afumuzor, Jayden Kouossu and Alfie Seldon
(midfielders), Theo Benjamin and Leon Mukumbira (forwards).
All eight debuted competitively last season for United U18s, four of
them previously at other academies (Afumuzor with Portsmouth,
Koussou with West Bromwich Albion, Yeutembip with Charlton Athletic
and Mukumbira at Peterborough).
New arrivals at Newcastle's academy are awaited, amid claims that
deals are in place for defender Kyle Healy-Matthews (formerly with
West Ham) and midfielder Kyran Thompson (formerly with Arsenal).
The future of Eli Hall is uncertain following his exit from Ipswich
Town, with both United and Spurs linked.

Baz is a Mag - official

Newcastle announced the signing of left winger Bazoumana Toure
from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim on Sunday. A fee of around £43m is
reported, although officially undisclosed.
The 20 year-old Ivory Coast international flew to Tyneside with his
representatives on Thursday, with social media images
then circulating on Friday of him inside SJP.
Toure's participation at the World Cup Finals ended with Ivory
Coast's defeat by Norway on Tuesday, having made three appearances
(one start and two from the bench).
He moved from
Swedes Hammarby to Hoffenheim in January 2025 transfer
window, netting five times last season.
Toure becomes the third Ivorian
to represent United after Cheick Tiote and the rather
less-celebrated loan flop, Seydou Doumbia.
The Magpies previously did business with Hoffenheim in 2019,
purchasing Joelinton for a claimed £40m fee.
Toure is reportedly represented by Unique Sports Group, whose
other clients include Anthony Gordon, Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw and
Lewis Miley.
Update:
Deadline set for L7 Singing section moves
NUFC confirm that they continue to
accept requests from current season ticket holders to relocate into
a dedicated singing section at the North West Corner of Level 7.
These must be made by
Fri 17.07.2026. Details

Update:
Antonio loan looms
Spanish newspaper Marca report
that Newcastle have concluded a further loan agreement for
Antonio Cordero, who will return to Cadiz for the coming season.
Signed by the Magpies last summer, the 19 year-old winger had an
unprofitable loan spell with Belgians KVC Westerlo before agreeing
to join Cadiz at the turn of the year.
Following a slow start, Cordero got more pitch time after two
changes of coach, ending up as a Cadiz crowd favourite after they
avoided relegation from the Spanish second tier.

Sandro away

Latest: Tonali's transfer was
announced on Monday, the player taking to social media with a
message for Newcastle fans that appears to be AI-generated.
The reference to his "son born during my time here" in that
statement was at least accurate, that birth taking place in a
private hospital in London last January, not Tyneside.
Earlier: Newcastle's second
high-profile player departure of the summer was sealed on Wednesday, after a deal taking Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur
was finalised.
Tonali was spotted flying from Milan to London on Thursday
to complete the formalities of his medical.
A fee of £92.5m was agreed plus £7.5m in add-ons, with the 26
year-old Italian international midfielder collecting a weekly wage
of £275K - more than double his current earnings and enough to
offset the stigma of joining a side who have finished seventeenth in
each of the last two seasons...
The first player to swap the Magpies for Cockerels since Moussa
Sissoko almost a decade ago, Tonali is set to make his PL home debut
for Spurs against United in late August.
Although there was some noise about rumoured interest from
Manchester City, that failed to translate into an actual bid,
leaving Spurs as the only serious suitors for Tonali.
On that basis the Magpies look to have done good business for a
player who, like Anthony Gordon, clearly saw his future away from
Tyneside and whose variable displays contributed to our own mediocre
domestic campaign. Avoiding another damaging Alexander Isak-style
saga is also refreshing.
Inbound recruitment though is where the real interest lies - which
will help to answer the imponderable question of whether there's
enough of a "project" to prevent Bruno Guimaraes from joining what
would become an exodus.
Rightly described as talismanic by one writer in recent days, the
monetary value of the 28 year-old who produced on a global
stage at the World Cup for Brazil may be at his maximum, but his
exit really would trigger alarm bells.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply for away tickets, 24 hours to determine success, then 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a
ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.
The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division usually get two hours head start.
NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log
on and complete your purchase.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a
reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.
Only those within the new loyalty point total are
eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already
closed.
PL away ticket prices are unchanged at 30 for both the 2026/27
and 2027/28 seasons.

Born Or Died:
1951 Mick Martin
born, Dublin, Ireland. (1978-83)

Midfielder
who played for Home Farm and Bohemians in his native city and had made his
full international debut before a £25K move to Old Trafford in 1973.
Going on loan to West Bromwich Albion in 1975, a permanent deal followed to
keep Mick at the Hawthorns, although he had spent time on loan at Preston
North End when the Magpies made their move.
Bill McGarry spent £100K bringing him to SJP in November 1978 and he
debuted at Crystal Palace the following month - finding the net for the first
time in a home win over Charlton the following March.
Affectionately known as "Zico", Mick came through a sticky patch and
was a favourite of the Gallowgate crowd - a fine goal at home to Bolton
cementing that reputation.
And a measure of Martin's importance to the side could be measured by the drop
in form that followed his injury in December 1979.
Having captained United, Mick eventually bowed out at the end of the 1982/83
season. Later moves took him to Wolves, Vancouver Whitecaps, local side
Willington, Cardiff City, Peterborough and Rotherham.
End his playing career with a second stint at Preston, Mick coached at
Deepdale before returning to SJP in 1987 as a scout.
Within months however, he was part of the coaching staff, serving as reserve
team manager and first team coach during 1988 when Colin Suggett became
caretaker boss.
After a period coaching at Celtic with Liam Brady, Mick ended his active
football career - although he was involved with sports and betting shop
ventures on Tyneside.
Running a workwear clothing business in the area and working as a local radio
pundit covering United, more recently Mick represented the FAI in the
North East.

1997
Death of Ivor Allchurch, 67.
(1958-62)
1986
Sebastien Bassong born, Paris, France. (2008-09)
Newcastle fans attending the pre-season
kickabout at Doncaster in August 2008 saw the unheralded appearance of this
central defender on trial from French side Metz.
With no mention in the programme or on the stadium PA of who was clad in the
number 46 shirt, the episode was reminiscent of a pre-season game at
Birmingham City in 1997.
That day the unknown Magpie was Dutch winger Brian Pinas - promptly christened
"Whatsie" by Toon fans - and similar chants were audible at
the Keepmoat Stadium.
While Pinas quickly faded from view though and never played competitively for
the first team, Bassong impressed and signed permanently within days.
A competitive Magpies debut for the French U21 international came in the Carling
Cup at Coventry City, followed by a Premier League bow off
the bench in a 0-3 defeat at Arsenal.
A second red card of the season in the vital home game against Fulham (the
first coming at Wigan on Boxing Day) meant that Seb was suspended for the
final game of the season, at Aston Villa.
Bassong always looked likely to be one of the squad who departed following
United's relegation and although he appeared in a pre-season game against
Leeds, his eyes were obviously elsewhere.
The player was fined two week's wages after refusing to travel to a pre-season
fixture at Dundee United and an £8m move to White Hart Lane was agreed:
An epic 2009/10 season for Spurs then saw Bassong score the winner against
Liverpool on his debut, finish on the losing side in an FA Cup Semi Final at
Wembley and help his new club qualify for the Champions League.
Having accepted a call-up by Cameroon within days of joining Spurs (qualifying
by virtue of his parents' nationality), Bassong started games against both
Japan and Denmark at the World Cup Finals.
However, he was unable to prevent them from exiting in the first round and a
difficult season with Spurs saw him frequently named as an unused substitute.
Reported to be seeking a transfer in the summer of 2011, the player said,
"I feel that I have gone backwards, like I have gone from heaven to
hell." Sympathy was in noticeably short supply around NE1....
Loaned to Premier League strugglers Wolves during January 2012, Bassong was
unable to prevent their relegation and he returned to White Hart Lane.
Joining Norwich City in a £5.5m deal that summer, Bassong was voted player of
the year in his first season at Carrow Road, despite posing for photographs
with a firearm and publishing them online.
Adding another relegation to his CV, a loan to fellow Championship side
Watford came in October 2014 before returning to Carrow Road and regaining his
place, playing in their Wembley playoff final win over Boro.
Playing at the top level again, Bassong endured his fourth demotion when the
Canaries were relegated again in 2015/16.
Staying at City for another season, his final appearance for them came in
March 2017 and he was released that summer.
Following unsuccessful trials at Birmingham City, Roda JC (Holland) and QPR,
Seb belatedly signed for Peterborough United during October 2018.
However, he made just one appearance for the Posh before leaving in
early 2019.
Following a brief spell with Greek side Volos, Bassong returned to the UK and
appeared for Isthmian League side Haringey Borough.
1993 DeAndre Yedlin born,
Seattle, USA.
(2016-21)
Having lost Daryl Janmaat to Watford during August 2016,
United acted quickly by paying Spurs £5m for their 23 year-old right back.
The US international arrived at White Hart Lane from Seattle Sounders in 2014
but played just once - a cameo substitute outing against Aston Villa in the
Premier League.
Loaned to the mackems in the 2015/16 season, Yedlin had made 25 appearances
- including both derby matches.
His Magpies debut came late on in a home win over Brighton and
he arrived from the bench a week later to grab a vital second goal in a
victory at Derby County.
However, injury halted his progress during early March, a thigh injury
sidelining him following crucial wins at Brighton and Huddersfield but he
returned in mid-April to help his side to the Championship title.
He made 34 appearances - three from the bench - in the 2017/18 season, helping
United secure Premier League status and also reach a half century of
international caps.
Yedlin then appeared in all but four of the club's Premier League games in the
following campaign, netting his maiden Premier League goal at Manchester City.
The replacement of Rafa Benitez by Steve Bruce saw Javier Manquillo restored
to the side in preference to DeAndre; with the arrival of Emil Krafth
signalling further competition for the right back position.
Entering the final year of his deal at SJP, DeAndre went public about a lack of
contract negotiations and was restricted to League Cup appearances for several
months.
What proved to be his final senior game came in the 0-1 defeat at Sheffield
United in January 2021, amid claims that an expired work permit precluded
him from any further involvement.
With a reshaped Magpies side by then regularly deploying Jacob Murphy at right
wing back, Yedlin secured his release from United and signed for Galatasaray.
He left the Turks in January 2022 and joined MLS side Inter Miami on a
four-year deal.
Yedlin left Miami and moved to FC Cincinnati in March 2024 before moving to
Real Salt Lake during 2025.

1994 Nathan Evans born,
Middlesbrough
(2007-11)
Striker who made four U18 appearances
for Newcastle during the 2010/11 season before his release.
Efforts at finding a new club
took him as far afield as Preston North End, Crawley Town, Norwich City,
Motherwell and even Romanian side Dinamo Bucharest.
Featuring more as a wide midfielder, stints at non-league Whitby Town, Norton
& Stockon Ancients,
Guisborough Town and Billingham Town then followed, before a major development
during March 2014.
One of 5,700 entrants in the Samsung Win A Pro Contract talent contest, Evans
made it through to the last 22
and then scored twice in the final of the event.
League Two Wycombe Wanderers
invited
Nathan to train with them and he signed a one year deal
at Adams Park.
Facing
Chelsea in pre-season, he didn't
play competitively for the Chairboys and was
loaned to Scarborough Athletic but returned to
Wycombe due to injury.
Released in 2015, he played for
Darlington, Corby Town, Team Northumbria, Thornaby and Billingham
Synthonia.
2009 Sam Alabi born,
Manchester
(2023-present)

Midfielder signed ahead of the
2023/24 season from Oldham Athletic and given a first
taste of U18 football at home to Blackburn Rovers the
following April.
Debuting for United U21s at Harrogate Town in an EFL
Trophy tie in November 2025, Alabi was an unused
subsitute in the Champions League at Marseille
and in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
Captaining England at U17 level, Sam's first professional contract at Newcastle was
announced on his 17th birthday in July 2026.

What Else?
1986 Queen and Status Quo upset the
Gallowgate pigeons when they appeared on a double bill at St. James' Park.
Freddy Mercury & Co. donated the proceeds of that night's concert to
Tyneside children's charities.

2002 In a remarkable U-turn, Newcastle's
Olivier Bernard signed a new three year contract at SJP, after previously
declaring that he didn't want to play for us again.
2006 4-1 up after
the first leg, Norwegian side Lillestrøm wrapped up their Intertoto
Second Round tie in Iceland against IBK Keflavik with two early goals.
However, their unassailable 6-1 aggregate advantage at the interval was eroded
after the break as the Icelandics hit back.
Final score in the Keflavíkurvöllur Stadium was 2-2, giving the visitors a 6-3
aggregate victory and setting up a Third Round meeting with Newcastle United.
2007 Credible
sources claimed that Barcelona forward Deco was due on Tyneside to finalise a
deal reported in the News of the World.
The story turned out to
be as false as most of the others and a year later the Brazilian had joined
Chelsea for £8m.
2008
Sebastian Larsson's agent claimed Newcastle were the only side to make a
bid for the Birmingham City midfielder.
If that was true then it was a bid that wasn't accepted, the Swede staying at
St. Andrew's until joining the mackems in 2011.
2011 The
agent of Paris St. Germain's Mevlut Erdinc confirmed that his client wouldn't be
moving to SJP - despite apparent agreement over a fee between the two clubs.
2014 Despite
a match-winning display in the penalty shootout at the World Cup Quarter Finals
against Costa Rica, Tim Krul was denied the chance to repeat the feat in the
Semi-Final against Argentina.
Held 0-0 after 120 minutes in Sao Paulo, this time Holland coach Louis Van Gaal
had made three earlier replacements, meaning super sub Tim watched Jasper
Cillessen failed to make a single save in a 2-4 loss.

2023
Newcastle confirmed that both
