Premier League:
Where there's a Will....

Newcastle  3  West Ham  1

The Magpies ended their home campaign with arguably one of their best performances against a West Ham side that were supposedly fighting for their lives.

Will Osula made it five goals in six games with a strike in each half and Nick Woltemade scored his first league of the year as the Hammers were dispatched with surprising ease at St. James' Park on Sunday evening.

Tottenham now just need a point from their remaining two games to condemn today's visitors to the Championship, with the David Moyes' inspired European cup success now a distant memory.

But Eddie Howe's black and whites are still in contention for an unlikely European spot although they would need four results to go their way on the final day of the season, depending on Chelsea's penultimate game against Spurs on Tuesday.*

Newcastle got off to a lightning start and went ahead in the 15th minute, taking advantage of another loose pass from the visitors with Harvey Barnes doing well to tee up Woltemade who finished with an accurate sidefoot from six yards at the Leazes End.

The lead was doubled just four minutes later when possession was gained again and some slick passing saw Jacob Ramsey put Osula through on goal with the Dane showing great poise to slot the ball under the advancing Mads Hermansen.

Tomas Soucek had been cleared of a handball penalty shout before the goals after a Bruno Guimaraes cross was whipped into the box.

A tactical change from Nuno Espirito Santo paid off for his side and they created some openings with Tomas Soucek and ex-Magpie Callum Wilson could have done better with, while Nick Pope made an unorthodox double save to deny substitute Taty Castellanos.

After the break, there were chances at both ends as West Ham tried to get back into the game with Lewis Hall, Barnes and Bruno all going close while Crysencio Summerville's dribbling caused problems for the Magpies defence.

However, the contest was over in the 65th minute when another swift counter attack saw substitute Joe Willock break into the box and unselfishly lay the ball on a plate for Osula to claim his second.

The goal of the game came four minutes later when Castellanos swivelled and hit a superb dipping effort over Pope to give his side some hope of a dramatic late comeback.

But even Newcastle couldn't throw away a three goal advantage and although Castellanos grazed the bar and there were two or three penalty claims United held out for the victory.

Kieran Trippier was substituted in the 85th minute and he and Emile Krafth were given fine send-offs before the game and at half-time respectively.

The staff and players went on a traditional lap of honour to thank the home fans after the final whistle after what has been a marathon and memorable season.

Full match report to follow.

* if Chelsea fail to beat Spurs on Tuesday then the following set of results would see Newcastle finish eighth and qualify for the Europa Conference:

Fulham 0-2 Newcastle
Liverpool 1-0 Brentford
(any three goal swing that gives us a better goals "for" than Brentford)
mackems 0-0 Chelsea (any draw)
Tottenham 0-0 Everton (anything other than a five goal win for Everton)

Team: Pope, Trippier (Elanga 85), Thiaw, Botman, Hall, Ramsey, Tonali (Willock 53), Guimaraes, Barnes (J.Murphy 75), Woltemade (Burn 75), Osula (Wissa 85).
Subs n/u: Ramsdale, A.Murphy, Gordon, Neave.

Booked: Hall.

Goals: Osula 15, 65, Woltemade 19.

WHUFC: Hermansen, Disasi, Mavropanos, Todibo (Castellanos 26), Wan-Bissaka (Pablo 63), Soucek (Kante 63), Fernandes, Diouf, Bowen, Summerville, Wilson.
Subs n/u: Areola, Kilman, Magassa, Potts, Scarles, Walker-Peters.

Booked: Soucek, Diouf, Kante.

Goals: Castellanos 69.

Crowd: 52,206 including a sold out section of away followers who stuck with their team at 0-2 but then gave them untold grief after the final whistle singing, "you're not fit to wear the shirt".

Home areas were fairly restrained with just one rendition of "f*** off to the Championship" and one very quiet airing of "he's only a poor little Hammer". A dwindling number of folk probably get that reference these days with even fewer knowing where the tune came from...!

After the game Eddie Howe said:

"It wasn't the perfect game from us but it was very good in phases, especially in the first half.

"I thought we were excellent with the ball, really creative.

"I think we've seen real progression in the last few weeks. A much better performance.

"We're showing signs we're beginning to re-find our form."

Update:
Krafth bows out

Newcastle have confirmed the departure of Emil Krafth, ending a seven season posting on Tyneside for the 31 year-old Swedish defender.

A £5m arrival from French side Amiens hours on transfer deadline day in August 2019, Stockholm-born Krafth made the first of his 106 appearances in all competitions in a 1-3 Premier League defeat at Norwich City that month.

Initially utilised at right back, Emil also lined up in central defence during his time at United, but a succession of injuries affected his availability for club and country.

The 2022/23 campaign would be a particular low point, featuring regularly in pre-season only to suffer a cruciate ligament tear in the League Cup at Tranmere Rovers.

That kept him out of action for over a year, before other issues including a broken collarbone and knee problems continued to disrupt his availability thereafter.

Extending his contract in 2022, 2024 and 2025, what proved to be his final senior appearance was a 45 minute runout at West Ham during November 2025.

Krafth made 84 PL appearances (54 starts) from a possible 266 in that competition, his one competitive goal coming against Manchester City at an empty SJP in the COVID-restricted 2020/21 season.

Unable to get on the pitch in either Champions League campaigns during his time at United, more positively he was a late substitute at Wembley in the Carabao Cup Final success against Liverpool in March 2025.

2026/27:
ST waiting list:
opens Monday

NUFC confirm that a season ticket waiting list will open up ahead of next season, with a minimum of 250 available.

Entry to the waiting list is restricted to club members, who can sign up from Mon 18.05.2026 to Sun 31.05.2026.

A ballot will then take place with entrants placed in priority groups according to criteria set by the club. Ballot winners can then purchase season tickets from Wed 10.06.2026.

While the purchase of a 2026/27 membership isn't required to join the waiting list, anyone who doesn't win this ballot would need to continue paying for membership in order to maintain their place in the queue for future ST releases.

While the minimum figure of 250 for this year is set, there's no mention of how many STs will be offered thereafter.

Newcastle's debut at the International U19 football tournament in the Swiss town of Altstatten saw them record a seventh place finish at the eight team event.

The Magpies began their three group games on Friday by defeating Danes Brondby 1-0, defender Henry Johnson on target with four minutes of the scheduled 40 to play.

0-1 defeats at the hands of Croatians Dinamo Zagreb and Swiss side St.Gallen left United bottom of their four team group, consigning them to a 7th/8th place playoff on Saturday against Nottingham Forest.

That finished 2-0 to Newcastle, thanks to goals from Kyle Fitzgerald and Kacey Wooster.

Update:
Tigers v Saints

The race to join Coventry City and Ipswich Town in next season's Premier League continues with the two sides who will contest the Championship playoff final now confirmed.

Hull City secured their place with a 2-0 win at Millwall on Monday after a scoreless first leg, 24 hours before a 2-1 home success for Southampton over Boro in extra time - again coming after the first leg had ended 0-0.

The Tigers will face the Saints at Wembley Stadium on Saturday May 23rd, unless their punishment for the ongoing EFL charge over alleged spying alters either the teams competing, the match date - or perhaps both.

2026/27:
Pre-season whispers

Update 1: Newcastle World have mentioned that French League Strasbourg could visit Gallowgate in pre-season.

Update 2:
Unconfirmed claims have surfaced on Everton fansites of a pre-season fixture for the Toffees against Newcastle at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium.

This isn't the first time that a Magpie visit to the home of Scottish rugby has been mentioned, similar claims emerging ahead of two recent seasons but no fixture arranged.

Manchester United played friendly matches at Murrayfield ahead of both the 2023/24 and 2024/25 PL seasons.

Earlier: With plans for long haul warm-up games abandoned, the focus has turned to whereabouts in Europe Newcastle will be preparing for their 2026/27 PL season.

After previous talk of Austria and Portugal, The Mail report that a training camp is planned at the Spanish resort of La Manga, with one associated friendly fixture.

The Chronicle meanwhile claim that Serie A side AS Roma have been invited to play at Gallowgate.

Update:
Munchen, glad Mag?

Speculation regarding the transfer of Anthony Gordon to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich continues, amid claims that talks over a fee continue with broad agreement over personal terms and contract duration reached.

The 25 year-old England international last featured for Newcastle in the defeat at Crystal Palace a month ago, before missing two games due to an alleged injury.

Gordon then returned to the squad but wasn't called from the bench against Brighton or Nottingham Forest. Whether he'll add to his 152 league and cup appearances against West Ham or Fulham remains to be seen.

Loan lads

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville):
Seville enhanced their chances of avoiding relegation from La Liga by coming back from 0-2 down to win 3-2 at Villarreal on Wednesday. The on-loan Magpie continued in goal.

Matt Targett (Middlesbrough):

Boro's hopes of reaching the Championship promotion playoff final perished with a 1-2
semi-final loss at Southampton on Tuesday night after a scoreless first leg on Teesside.

Matt made the 45th and final appearance of his Boro loan spell this season, completing the full 120 minutes as the tie was decided in extra time.

Harrison Ashby/Joe White (Bradford City):

Neither Magpie featured on Thursday as a 0-1 home loss at the hands of Bolton Wanderers saw the Trotters advance to the League One promotion playoff final at Wembley.

Antonio Cordero (Cadiz)
Friday saw Cadiz draw 1-1 away to Castellon with Cordero playing the full game and taking the corner kick that led to his side's valuable equaliser.

The point leaves them fourth bottom of La Liga 2, four points clear of the relegation places but having played a game more than the bottom three.

Travis Hernes (Groningen):

Trevan Sanusi (Lorient):

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.

Only those within the new loyalty point total are eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

PL away ticket prices will remain unchanged at £30 for both 2026/27 and 2027/28.

On This Day in History
17th May

Born Or Died:

1924 Roy Bentley born, Shirehampton, Bristol. (1946-48)

Roy was known as a centre half when he began his career with Bristol Rovers, Bristol City and Liverpool (the latter under the assumed name of Smith) while serving as an Able Seaman in the Royal Navy.

Converted to a striker by the time he moved to Tyneside ahead of the 1946/47 season, Roy was an immediate hit and a regular scorer, netting twice on his debut in a 4-1 victory at Millwall in Division Two that August.

However he abruptly left midway through the 1947/48 promotion season, moving to Chelsea as a £12,500 replacement for their star man Tommy Lawton.

Bentley maintains he "had to leave because of the North-east air. I was so fatigued and the doctor told me it would be better if I moved south. He said, 'If you stay and fight it you could end up with TB'."

That's interesting, given his wartime service on convoy escort ships bound for Murmansk, which lies above the arctic circle....

After a slow start at Stamford Bridge, Roy came good and was to finish as top scorer in each of his seasons at the Blues.

The highlight was a 22 goal haul as his side won the title in the 1954/55 season, a total that including a hat trick against Newcastle in a 4-3 victory at Stamford Bridge.

Just over a year later Roy made the switch to nearby Fulham, where he converted back to centre half. QPR then became his final club for a two year spell from 1961.

Winning 12 full England caps, Roy entered management with Reading during 1963, remaining in charge at Elm Park until 1969.

He also managed Swansea Town, scouted for Bradford City and took charge of non -league Thatcham Town. A return to Reading as club secretary saw him settle in the town, later holding a similar position at Aldershot Town.

Bentley's autobiography "Roy Wonder" was published in 2005 and a restaurant bears his name at Stamford Bridge.

Two days before his 87th birthday in 2011, Roy was a special guest on the pitch at Stamford Bridge during the half time break, receiving warm applause from both Chelsea and Newcastle fans.

He passed away in April 2018.

1962 Phil Linacre born, Middlesbrough (1983)

Striker who began his career with Coventry City, signing for Hartlepool United following his release by the Sky Blues and making a first team debut in December 1980.

Joining Whitby Town three years later, Phil made a handful of appearances on trial for Newcastle reserves during the 1983/84 season, netting in a 3-2 home win over Aston Villa in December 1983.

Nothing came of that and he rejoined Hartlepool shortly after, subsequently moving on to Bishop Auckland, Newcastle Blue Star, Darlington and Gateshead.

Phil's father Bill was a post-war star for Boro, while brother John also played professionally for Hartlepool United.

1970 John Karelse
born, Kapelle, Netherlands. (1999-2003)

Ahead of the 1999/00 season, Newcastle boss Ruud Gullit was looking to boost his goalkeeping options.

And after using Lionel Perez and Steve Harper in pre-season (along with on-trial duo Erwin Lemmens & Marc Ziegler), Harper started the season between the posts.

After just two games - and two defeats - though, Gullit acted to bring in Dutch stopper Karelse from NAC Breda for £750K.

With barely time to introduce himself to his new colleagues, big John made his debut at the Dell against Southampton - and let in four goals in 20 minutes after half time.

After keeping his place for the following week's 3-3 home draw with Wimbledon, Karelse made way for loan signing Tommy Wright in the mackem monsoon loss.

That was enough to see Gullit depart and following the installation of Bobby Robson as his successor, Karelse made just one more competitive appearance, in a 0-0 draw at Arsenal that October.

A trial spell with Turkish side Denizlispor in August 2000 failed to lead to a move and John returned to Tyneside to make periodic reserve appearances.

The following season saw Karelse sidelined by both illness and injury and although moves to both Feyenoord and Pompey were claimed in the media, neither came to pass.

Finally exiting SJP in 2003, John moved back to the Netherlands, joining lower league side AGOVV Apeldoorn.

Following his retirement, he then made a return to his first club Breda (where he'd made his debut in 1987) in 2004 as coach.

In September 2010 Karelse was appointed joint interim manager of NAC, along with Gert Aandewiel and Arno van Zwam.

The trio remained in post for the duration of the season, steering the club to the safety of 13th spot in the Eredivisie.

A poor run of results however resulted in Jon's dismissal during October 2012.

He next turned up in charge of VC Vlissingen during 2017, leaving there two years later and taking over at Achilles Veen.

2005 Miodrag Pivas born, Novi Sad, Serbia. (2024-present)

Defender/midfielder signed from Serbians Jedinstvo in July 2024, loaned to Dutch side Willem II, where he made just seven senior appearances as they suffered relegation from the Eredivisie.

Miodrag's Magpies bow came in a PL2 fixture at Birmingham City in August 2025, in what became his regular position as a central defender.

Pivas played 25 times in all competitions for the U21s that season, scoring once in a 1-1 draw at Reading in PL2.

He has appeared at International level for the Serbian U17 team.

The second game of United's Scandinavian tour saw them move from Bergen to Oslo and to a routine win against a side with a trio of Norwegian guest internationals.

Charlie Wayman led the way with four goals and Albert Stubbins chipped in with two, despite suffering from a thigh strain.

A detachment of British soldiers stationed nearby attended the game (with a large Union Flag) and delivered an urn of tea for Newcastle's players at half time!

He equalised from the penalty spot following a Craig Johnson handball, while United's second leveller came from his pal Terry McDermott, who volleyed past Bruce Grobelaar at the Gallowgate End.

Following the final whistle, KK was whisked away by a helicopter that landed briefly on the centre circle.

Among those who cheered his departure was a young NUFC ballboy named Alan Shearer.

A 23,325 sell-out crowd were at Highfield Road to see former Magpie Paul Gascoigne net in a 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

1997 Newcastle boss Kenny Dalglish returned to his old club Blackburn Rovers for goalkeeping coach Terry Gennoe, replacing the outgoing Peter Bonetti.

2004 In the wake of Newcastle's fifth place finish, Chairman Freddy Shepherd said:

"We are all in this together and the players are disappointed at what has happened this season, and so am I and the manager - and I am sure the supporters are very, very disappointed.

"We have had a good season in the UEFA Cup, but as far as the Premiership is concerned, three points out of 18 at the start of the season and three out of the last nine is just not good enough.

"I'm not happy that we're not in the Champions League qualifiers and I don't suppose the supporters are. But at least being in Europe next season gets us back on track.

"We will leave it a couple of days until the dust settles on last season. We know what we have to do, but we won't panic and what we have to do first is to make sure we have a steady ship.

"There is absolutely no chance of us doing a Leeds United, I can assure our fans of that."

2005 Graham Souness did his best Perry Mason impression when speaking to the Chronicle:

"Craig Bellamy can never play for me again. I still believe I couldn't have handled the situation with him any differently from the way I did.

"Craig Bellamy had scored seven goals up to the start of the new year and he was probably on schedule to score more goals for this club than he had before in any one season.

"But since he left, our dressing room is a healthier place. At the end of the day, the club is not here for the benefit of any one individual.

"The only player I have fallen out with here is Craig Bellamy. Yes, Laurent Robert isn't happy because he's not in the team every week but I don't expect any player not in the team to be happy.

"I pick players on how they train and how they play in matches. I cannot fall out with people because our personalities are not matched. I have to be far bigger than that. That's not what management is about.

"Who are these players I'm supposed to have fallen out with? Andy Cole? I rest my case. David Dunn? I rest my case. Craig Bellamy? I rest my case. Andy Todd? I rest my case. Dwight Yorke? We only fell out once at one training session.

"Don't forget I've managed hundreds of players in my 19 years as a manager. So I've fallen out with five of them? I rest my case."

2010 Newcastle confirmed the departure of Academy coach Kenny Wharton "by mutual consent".

The former Magpie had held various off-field roles at junior and academy level since returning to the club in 1999.

2022 Newcastle's pre-season plans were thrown into disarray by the cancellation of the Ohio Cup; a four team tournament in the USA based in Cincinnati and Columbus.

2023 Brentford's
Ivan Toney received an eight month ban and £50,000 fine after admitting a breach of FA betting rules.

The striker placed 232 bets between 2017 and 2021, beginning when he was still a Newcastle player, on loan at Scunthorpe United and Wigan Athletic.
