2026/27:
Bucket list

An unexpected highlight of United's
pre-season schedule is the opportunity to visit the genuinely
authentic ground of a notable side, as opposed to a generic "super"
stadium.
Newcastle's confirmation as opposition in Valencia's annual
curtain-raiser Trofeu Taronja game kicks off what should be the
final season for the 1923 vintage Mestalla.
Although preparation works for the Nou Mestalla in the suburbs of
Valencia began in 2007, it's only now that construction of the
70,000 capacity arena has advanced to the point that an opening date
next summer looks feasible.
With the countdown underway, the chance to sample a unique ground
holding 50,000 fans that is atmospheric and idiosyncratic in equal
measure is one not to be passed up.
PS: this will be Newcastle's first visit to the Mestalla, having
faced Valencia at Gallowgate back in 2008.
Update:
Live Forever Cup III

Returning to the Sam Smiths Park home of Newcastle Benfield this
coming Saturday (27th) is the third Live Forever Cup -
a charity football event.
Teams representing NUFC, Manchester City, Barcelona and the mackems
play in a round robin format, games taking place from 10am and the
final kicking off at 2.30pm.
The winners will be presented with the trophy by Shola Ameobi and squads
for all four teams will be announced on the day, with sporting and
entertainment figures promised plus a sprinkling of semi-pros and
local league players.
Admission is by donation, with raffles and an auction taking place.
All funds raised fund the work of charities: the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, St Benedict's Hospice,
Amber's Legacy, Chicks in Pink and the Ricky Hatton Foundation.
Event updates can be found on Instagram

Benfield's ground is on Benfield Road, postcode NE6 4NU.
Nearest Metro station is Walkergate.
EFL Trophy:
Bantams, Millers
and Minstermen
The draw for the Group Stage of the EFL Trophy took place
on Thursday, with Newcastle U21s
one of 16
invited sides.
The Magpies second string were placed in Northern Group Section C,
setting up visits to League One Bradford City and League Two
duo Rotherham United and York City.
Round dates are awaited.
Update:
Shirt sponsor unveiled
As previously reported, Tuesday saw the club confirm that their new main shirt
sponsor is to be the South African soft drink company Knox
Hydrate, who previously acquired naming rights to the club's
Darsley Park training ground.
The agreement duration is for three years but no details of the
value were announced in United's press release.
It has been claimed that it will net
up to 60m, with the 2026/27 season set at a maximum of
10m and the ceiling for the following two campaigns increasing to
25m.
The KNOX branding of United's Darsley Park training ground
remains a separate three year deal that begins next month and will boost the
club's coffers by 6m annually.
In terms of replica shirts which went on sale earlier this month
lacking any sponsor logo, the club confirm that:
Supporters who have purchased the 2026/27 home shirt will be
given an opportunity to get the Knox Hydrate logo applied.
Home shirts with the Knox logo will also be retailed later in the
season, whist upcoming away and third shirts will include the Knox
logo.

Update:
Tonali tug of war
Update: further unconfirmed reports have credited Arsenal
with an interest in Tonali.
Writing for The Athletic on Saturday night, the invariably
reliable David Ornstein confirmed that Spurs have initiated transfer
talks with Newcastle for Sandro Tonali.
The Italian international midfielder has also been strongly linked
with Manchester City - a story that Ornstein also references in his
report, claiming that their interest is in addition to to the
pursuit of old boy Elliot Anderson.
Various outlets then reported that Spurs had made an offer of around
80m for Tonali earlier in the week that was instantly dismissed by
the Magpies.
Update:
Alan Murray RIP

The death of former Newcastle United Assistant Manager Alan
Murray has been confirmed, at the age of 76.
Walker-born Murray began his playing career at Wallsend Boys Club
and joined Wolves as an apprentice in 1966, switching to
Middlesbrough the following year.
Following a decade of service in the midfield for Boro, York City,
Brentford and Doncaster Rovers, Alan held various off-field roles
including spells managing both Hartlepool United and Darlington.
Teaming up with former Ayresome Park colleague Graeme Souness at
Southampton in 1996, the pair later took charge of both Benfica and
Blackburn Rovers before succeeding Sir Bobby Robson at Gallowgate
during September 2004.
Murray remained at United with Souness until both left in February
2006.
2026/27:
Fixtures released
Newcastle
will begin the 2026/27 season against Liverpool at SJP on Sunday
August 23rd at 4.30pm - the fifth time in the last six years that
United have had a home opener.
In addition to player-related sub-plots - a possible PL debut for
Toon target Victor Munoz and the first time Alexander Isak has faced
his former club - it also sees new Reds boss Andoni Iraola test his
unbeaten PL record on Tyneside.
That Liverpool home game is live on
Sky Sports, who hold UK live transmission rights along with TNT
Sports. The first live schedule release date is in the week
commencing Monday July 13th, covering our first PL away game at
Spurs.
That game take places over the August Bank Holiday weekend and were
it to be played on the Sunday, would clash with rail work affecting
Kings Cross services.
The five midweek match rounds see Manchester United, Nottingham
Forest and Chelsea visit SJP. Trips to Old Trafford and the City
Ground comprise our midweek aways.
At least one Saturday game will be rescheduled as a result of the
opposition's European commitments; United's PL visit to Crystal
Palace on Saturday October 24th just 48 hours after the Eagles are
in Europa League Group Stage action.
Progress for Brighton into the Conference League Group Stage
meanwhile would require our PL visit to Sussex on Saturday
November 28th to be similaly rescheduled.
Coventry's
CBS Arena will become the 62nd different PL venue to have hosted Newcastle
when they head there during October for our first visit since
December 2009.
Following last season's away double header, the two festive season
games are both on Tyneside.
This season's Carabao Cup takes place on Sunday March 21st,
coinciding with the visit of Leeds United to SJP.
There's no clash with PL games on any FA Cup round weekend until the
Semi-finals, on or around April 24th. The Magpies are due to host
Ipswich Town that weekend.
The final home game against Crystal Palace is scheduled
on Sunday May 23rd, along with the rest of the PL games that weekend.
Saturday May 22nd is clear for the FA Cup Final.
The closing game of the season then takes the Magpies to promoted Hull City
on Sunday May 30th at 4pm - their first top-flight visit to
Humberside since January 2015.

schemes for Carabao Cup and FA Cup ties.
USA:
Careless whisper

Penalised with a booking in Paraguay's
game against the USA after a review confirmed a dive rather than a
foul, Miguel Almiron made more unwanted headlines on Friday.
The Newcastle old boy was dismissed during first half added time
against Turkey after covering his mouth to speak to an opponent -
and breaking another new regulation introduced at this World Cup
Final tournament.
Almiron is the second former or future Magpie to be sent off at a
World Cup Final tournament so far, after Patrick Kluivert saw red
for the Dutch against Belgium in 1998 for a good old-fashioned elbow
in the face of an opponent.
Update:
Recruitment mainstay confirms departure
The 15 year career of Steve Nickson at
Gallowgate is set to end with his departure this summer.
The 61 year-old moved from Blackburn Rovers to United
ahead of the 2011/12 season, switching from a youth recruitment
brief to scouting senior players in 2017.
Nickson continued in his role as head of recruitment as
Director of Football appointments came and went, but the presence of Andy Howe and his current position as Senior
Football Executive looks to have been the trigger that saw him seek alternative employment.
That is set to be as Sporting Director of Championship side West
Ham, but the Mail also claim an approach to Nixon by fellow second
tier club Wrexham.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply for away tickets, 24 hours to determine success, then 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a
ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.
The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division usually get two hours head start.
NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log
on and complete your purchase.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a
reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.
Only those within the new loyalty point total are
eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already
closed.
PL away ticket prices are unchanged at 30 for both the 2026/27
and 2027/28 seasons.

On This Day in History |

25th June |
|
Born Or Died:
1930 Vic Keeble born, Colchester.
(1952-57)
First spotted playing for hometown club Colchester United by
former Magpie Bill McCracken, Vic moved to SJP in February 1952 at a cost of £15,000,
Blackpool among the other sides bidding for his services.
Making his debut in a 1-0 defeat at Chelsea shortly after arriving, Keeble
(nicknamed "The Camel") failed to score in any of his five United appearances that season.
Jackie Milburn's move from centre forward to outside right made him a more
regular starter from the 1954-55 season onwards.
And it was during that campaign that Keeble scored the goals that took United
back to Wembley for a third time in five seasons, grabbing five in the
competition - including goals in both semi-finals ties against York.

Vic in action at Wembley in 1955
Averaging more than a goal every other game during his time at SJP, Vic
followed Jackie Milburn out of the door in 1957 as the Wembley squad broke up,
West Ham paid £10K for his services and he maintained his scoring form,
netting 45 goals in 76 league appearances for the Hammers and helping them gain
promotion to Division One in his first season at the Boleyn Ground.
A back injury eventually forced him into retirement in 1960 and
he worked in clerical roles for both Colchester United and Chelmsford City
thereafter, also having a stint as a sports reporter.
2013 found Vic back in the region for some talk-in appearances, during which
time he visited Jackie Milburn's widow Laura and was shown Keeble Way - a
street named after him in North Seaton (near Ashington).
And the following year Keeble joined Bob Moncur to perform
unveiling duties for a fan-funded plaque commemorating the late Joe Harvey at
the Gallowgate End.
Sadly Vic's death was recorded in January 2018 following a short illness - ending
the final link with United's 1950's Cup glory.

2004 Alex Murphy born, Annaghdown, Ireland.
(2022-present)
Defender who joined Newcastle a week after his 18th birthday -
although the deal was agreed some weeks previously and he played on for his
previous club, League of Ireland side Galway United.
A non-playing substitute for the first team friendly against Atalanta in July
2022, Alex made his competitive debut in a 1-2 PL2 loss at West Bromwich
Albion.
Racking up 20 reserve appearances in all competitions his first season at SJP,
a first senior outing came against Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia in December 2022.
In the first team squad for pre-season, Murphy featured in five friendlies
including 90 minutes against Fiorentina at SJP.
His Premier League bow came from the bench late on a 4-1 home win over Chelsea
in November 2023, making a similar cameo appearance against Sheffield United
at Gallowgate the following April.
Murphy then concluded the season by putting pen to paper on a new long term
contract with the Magpies.
Loaned to Bolton Wanderers in January 2025, Alex appeared 13
times for the third tier Trotters, netting twice.
Returning to bench duty at Newcastle in the 2025/26 season after further
pitch time in pre-season, a handful of cameo substitute appearances
followed.
Murphy's first competitive start for the Magpies then came in the Champions League home leg
against Qarabag during February 2026 - starting at left back and later
switching to centre half.
Internationally, Alex played for Ireland at U18, U19 and U21 levels, earning a
senior call-up for post-season friendlies against Qatar and Canada in 2026
without being called off the bench in either game.

What Else?
1950 Newcastle's
George Robledo (pictured) hit the bar as his Chile side faced England in the
first game of their World Cup campaign.
England won 2-0 in Rio De Janeiro, with Robledo's United colleague Jackie

XI.

Joe Harvey off.

Former Newcastle United junior goalkeeper Arthur Woods died in a car
accident close to his Doncaster home.
The 17 year-old was on the books of Scunthorpe United following his
departure from Gallowgate some months earlier.
1992 Rumours of a return to Gallowgate
were dashed as Chris Waddle signed for Sheffield Wednesday in a £1m deal.
2000 Kieron Dyer made the front page of
the News of the World after his Ayia Napa holiday video fell into the

Rio Ferdinand & Frank Lampard (jnr we hasten to add) had the other starring

2001 Craig Bellamy joined Newcastle for a reported

2007 Ageing rocker Rod Stewart brought

2007 Newcastle
accepted an offer of £10m for Michael Owen. Compensation
that is....
Chairman Freddy Shepherd
secured a deal with FIFA and the FA to compensate United for the injury
sustained to Owen in the 2006 World Cup.
However, the figure of £10m seemed
to be a little fanciful with salary payments for two years (?) plus compensation
from both governing bodies and costly and lengthy treatment in America, all
included in the claim.
2008 Pre-season friendlies
against Hartlepool, Doncaster Rovers, Hertha Berlin and Mallorca were confirmed
by United along with a home warm-up versus Valencia.
2009 Newspaper reports led to renewed optimism that the SJP log jam
was set to clear and new owners would be announced - along with a permanent
managerial appointment.
However, talk of an early conclusion to the sale was premature and that the
claims of Alan Shearer meeting Ashley etc. were false.
Pre-season training would begin in less than a week with Chris Hughton at the
helm.
2013 Midfielders Mehdi Abeid, Romain Amalfitano and Dan Gosling all
looked set to leave SJP - but the trio would end up making only
temporary exits.
Gosling returned to make ten more first team appearances after a spell at
Blackpool, while Abeid and Amalfitano had season-long loans at Panathinaikos and
Dijon, respectively.
2014 A 0-0 draw between Ecuador and
France confirmed qualification for Les Bleus at the World Cup Finals in Brazil.
United's Moussa Sissoko played the full game but Mathieu Debuchy and Yohan Cabaye
were both suspended.
SJP old boy, Loic Remy, played for the first time in the tournament.
2019 Newcastle confirmed that they had failed
to agree a new contract with Manager Rafa Benitez and he would depart the following Sunday when his deal expired.
2020 United announced contract extensions for
Javier Manquillo (four years), Andy Carroll (12 months) and Matty Longstaff (to
season end).
Formal confirmation also came that goalkeeper Rob Elliot's time at SJP was over
after almost nine years.
The 34 year-old had made the last of his 68 league and cup appearances back in December 2017.
2021
Miguel Almiron supplied a goal and an assist in
Paraguay's 2-0 Copa America defeat of
Chile in Brasilia.
2023
Anthony Gordon netted
for
England U21s as they beat Israel
2-0 in Kutaisi to reach
the knockout stages of the U21 Euros with a game
to spare.
2024 A second successive draw for England at Euro 2024, held 0-0 by Slovenia in Cologne.
Kieran Trippier played 84 minutes and Anthony Gordon was a late arrival.
2025
England U21s made it to the final of the Euros thanks to a 2-1 semi-final
win
over the Netherlands in Bratislava.
Tino Livramento played the full game at right back;
former Magpie Elliot Anderson providing an assist for Harvey Elliott to
score the first of his two goals.
