Update:
Tonali tug of war
Writing for The Athletic on Saturday night, the invariably
reliable David Ornstein confirmed that Spurs have initiated transfer
talks with Newcastle for Sandro Tonali.
The Italian international midfielder has also been strongly linked
with Manchester City - a story that Ornstein also references in his
report, claiming that their interest is in addition to to the
pursuit of old boy Elliot Anderson.
Various outlets then reported that Spurs had made an offer of around
£80m for Tonali earlier in the week that was instantly dismissed by
the Magpies.
Update:
Alan Murray RIP

The death of former Newcastle United Assistant Manager Alan
Murray has been confirmed, at the age of 76.
Walker-born Murray began his playing career at Wallsend Boys Club
and joined Wolves as an apprentice in 1966, switching to
Middlesbrough the following year.
Following a decade of service in the midfield for Boro, York City,
Brentford and Doncaster Rovers, Alan held various off-field roles
including spells managing both Hartlepool United and Darlington.
Teaming up with former Ayresome Park colleague Graeme Souness at
Southampton in 1996, the pair later took charge of both Benfica and
Blackburn Rovers before succeeding Sir Bobby Robson at Gallowgate
during September 2004.
Murray remained at United with Souness until both left in February
2006.
2026/27:
Fixtures released
Newcastle
will begin the 2026/27 season against Liverpool at SJP on Sunday
August 23rd at 4.30pm - the fifth time in the last six years that
United have had a home opener.
In addition to player-related sub-plots - a possible PL debut for
Toon target Victor Munoz and the first time Alexander Isak has faced
his former club - it also sees new Reds boss Andoni Iraola test his
unbeaten PL record on Tyneside.
That Liverpool home game is live on
Sky Sports, who hold UK live transmission rights along with TNT
Sports. The first live schedule release date is in the week
commencing Monday July 13th, covering our first PL away game at
Spurs.
That game take places over the August Bank Holiday weekend and were
it to be played on the Sunday, would clash with rail work affecting
Kings Cross services.
The five midweek match rounds see Manchester United, Nottingham
Forest and Chelsea visit SJP. Trips to Old Trafford and the City
Ground comprise our midweek aways.
At least one Saturday game will be rescheduled as a result of the
opposition's European commitments; United's PL visit to Crystal
Palace on Saturday October 24th just 48 hours after the Eagles are
in Europa League Group Stage action.
Progress for Brighton into the Conference League Group Stage
meanwhile would require our PL visit to Sussex on Saturday
November 28th to be similaly rescheduled.
Coventry's
CBS Arena will become the 62nd different PL venue to have hosted Newcastle
when they head there during October for our first visit since
December 2009.
Following last season's away double header, the two festive season
games are both on Tyneside.
This season's Carabao Cup takes place on Sunday March 21st,
coinciding with the visit of Leeds United to SJP.
There's no clash with PL games on any FA Cup round weekend until the
Semi-finals, on or around April 24th. The Magpies are due to host
Ipswich Town that weekend.
The final home game against Crystal Palace is scheduled
on Sunday May 23rd, along with the rest of the PL games that weekend.
Saturday May 22nd is clear for the FA Cup Final.
The closing game of the season then takes the Magpies to promoted Hull City
on Sunday May 30th at 4pm - their first top-flight visit to
Humberside since January 2015.

United enter the
Carabao Cup in the regionalised Second Round on or around Wednesday August 26th.
They should
learn their opponents on or around Monday August 10th.
The usual FA Cup Third Round ties will take place on or around
Saturday January 9th 2027, with the draw for that set to be staged
on or around Sunday December 6th.
The Magpies are yet to release details of the home cup ticket
schemes for Carabao Cup and FA Cup ties.
USA:
Careless whisper

Penalised with a booking in Paraguay's
game against the USA after a review confirmed a dive rather than a
foul, Miguel Almiron made more unwanted headlines on Friday.
The Newcastle old boy was dismissed during first half added time
against Turkey after covering his mouth to speak to an opponent -
and breaking another new regulation introduced at this World Cup
Final tournament.
Almiron is the second former or future Magpie to be sent off at a
World Cup Final tournament so far, after Patrick Kluivert saw red
for the Dutch against Belgium in 1998 for a good old-fashioned elbow
in the face of an opponent.
Update:
Progress?
It's reported that Newcastle's new main shirt
sponsor is to be South African soft drink company KNOX, who
already hold training ground naming rights.
A new three year agreement is set to net
the Magpies up to £60m*, with the 2026/27 season set at a maximum of
£10m and the ceiling for the following two campaigns increasing to
£25m.
The KNOX branding of United's Darsley Park training ground
remains a
separate three year deal that begins next month and will boost the
club's coffers by £6m annually.
* The now-expired three year sponsorship contract with
SELA was confirmed by NUFC in June 2023, when no firm details of
value or duration were publicly divulged.
The replacement deal for the FUN88 brand was claimed to
be worth £25m per year, with no mention of performance-related
clauses, meaning that the Magpies banked £75m.
The biggest difference between 2023 and 2026 is of course
the fact that the SELA shirts were then set to be displayed in
Champions League games and the KNOX ones aren't.
On that basis, it's reasonable to conclude that the £25m
notional fee for 2027/28 and 2028/29 is based on United qualifying
for the prestige European club competition and that the value of
those rights is unchanged since 2023 - certainly from our
negotiations.
Update:
Recruitment mainstay confirms departure
The 15 year career of Steve Nickson at
Gallowgate is set to end with his departure this summer.
The 61 year-old moved from Blackburn Rovers to United
ahead of the 2011/12 season, switching from a youth recruitment
brief to scouting senior players in 2017.
Nickson continued in his role as head of recruitment as
Director of Football appointments came and went, but the presence of Andy Howe and his current position as Senior
Football Executive looks to have been the trigger that saw him seek alternative employment.
That is set to be as Sporting Director of Championship side West
Ham, but the Mail also claim an approach to Nixon by fellow second
tier club Wrexham.

2026/27:
Pre-season
Newcastle's only confirmed pre-season game so far sees them face
Everton at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium on
Wednesday August 12th at 5.15pm.
All ticket sales via Ticketmaster, meaning that there's no loyalty point
requirement and no loyalty points are issued.
Prices ranged from
£35 to £75 for adults plus booking fees of up to £13 - an
incredible uplift in cost compared to the £25 tickets at Celtic last
July.
While outrageous, the pricing is little shock to anyone attending
the Premier League Summer Series of games featuring Newcastle in the
USA during 2023.
That was also handled by Ticketmaster, with the cheapest ticket for
United's games against Aston Villa (in Philadelphia) and Chelsea (in
Atlanta) £49 when including booking fees.
There has been an inevitable backlash from fans unhappy at paying
the equivalent of Champions League ticket prices, the line "from
£35" factually correct but grossly misleading.
Although not administering this game (but presumably approving the
ticket prices), Newcastle's opportunity to make amends will arise in
the form of the home friendlies.
A sensible pricing policy for those games would seem like a small
but necessary action after the Lothian shakedown.
The teatime kick-off does mean that it's possible to get back to
London Kings Cross via train post-match - which may be handy, given
the price of hotels in Edinburgh due to the annual Fringe Festival
taking place at the same time.
We're uncertain whether this really is a "dry run" to test the
viability of staging future NUFC games at Murrayfield, were SJP to
be unavailable due to reconstruction.
Regarding the rest of pre-season, the players will report back
around
July 13th and include a training camp in the Spanish resort of La Manga
on unspecified dates.
A pair of home friendlies over the weekend of August 15th/16th are
anticipated, with opponents still tbc.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply for away tickets, 24 hours to determine success, then 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a
ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.
The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division usually get two hours head start.
NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log
on and complete your purchase.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a
reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.
Only those within the new loyalty point total are
eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already
closed.
PL away ticket prices are unchanged at £30 for both the 2026/27
and 2027/28 seasons.

Born Or Died:
1917
Dominic Kelly
born, Sandbach, Cheshire. (1938-46)
Centre half who moved began his playing career at Sandbach Ramblers before
joining Leeds United at the age of 18.
Struggling to get into the first XI at Elland Road with just four appearances
(all made during the 1937-38 season), Dom joined Newcastle in November 1938 for
£1,165.
What proved to Kelly's sole senior game as a Magpie came in a 0-4 home loss to
Coventry City in February 1939, with the outbreak of World War II halting his
playing career.
Serving in the British Army, Kelly toured the Middle East in a military
football team named the Wanderers alongside fellow Magpie Ted Swinburne and the
likes of Tom Finney.
Sustaining a ligament injury, Dominic later joining the police force on Tyneside
and switched from football to cricket.
A batsman for local league side for Benwell and the police team, he also
represented Northumberland in the 1948 Minor Counties Championship.
Reportedly dismissed from the police in 1957 after a theft charge was proven
against him, Kelly's death was recorded in Croydon during 1982.

1923
Robert Robinson born,
Newbiggin. (1952-54)

Goalkeeper who had been on the books of Burnley as an amateur, but
returned from Turf Moor to play for his hometown side.
Signed by the mackems in February 1947, Bobby made a £2,500 switch to SJP just before the 1952/53
season got underway.
The first of five senior appearances for Newcastle came in a 1-2 loss at
Burnley in within weeks of arriving, as Robinson deputised for first-choice
Ronnie Simpson.
Released by United in 1954, Bobby was later landlord of the Queens Head pub in
his hometown and died in 1975.

1935 Keith Burkinshaw born, Higham, Yorkshire.
(Coach 1968-75)

Beginning as a
part-timer with Denaby United while working at the Dodworth pit nearby, Keith
played for Wolves, Liverpool, Workington and Scunthorpe United.
Briefly taking caretaker charge of the latter after retiring in 1968, Burky then
coached in Zambia before Joe Harvey recruited him to work alongside coach Dave
Smith at SJP.
Keith later succeeded Smith as United first team coach and was alongside Harvey
as the club lost the 1974 FA Cup Final.
Following Harvey out of Gallowgate in 1975, Burkinshaw went on to become the Spurs manager in 1976, a
year after moving to White Hart Lane as assistant to Terry Neill.
He remained in the post until 1984 and left having experienced relegation,
promotion, two FA Cup Final victories and a UEFA Cup final success against
Anderlecht - in what proved to be his last game in charge.
Departing after quarrels with the Spurs board, Keith took charge of the Bahrain
national side and then coached Sporting Lisbon before returning to England in
1988 as the manager of Gillingham.
Scouting for Glenn Hoddle's Swindon Town side, Burkinshaw was then persuaded to
join West Bromwich Albion as assistant to Ossie Ardiles (a player he'd signed
whilst Spurs boss back in 1978.)
Succeeding Ossie at The Hawthorns in 1993, Keith lasted just one season and
later took up a Director of Football role at Aberdeen.
Working alongside fellow ex-Mag Frank Clark for the League Managers Association,
he also scouted for Stoke City.
In 2005 Keith resurfaced as assistant to Aidy Boothroyd at Watford, giving up the post
two years later for family reasons.

What Else?
|
1905
Although their successful season had concluded in late April, Newcastle United
were belatedly presented with the First Division Championship trophy.
The Magpies had to wait until the Football League Committee met in Newcastle,
with the silverware handed over at a dinner staged in the Assembly Rooms.
Football League President JJ Bentley made the presentation, along with gold
medals and watches to the players.
1982
SJP hosted its first live music venture (apart from
numerous brass & military bands and horrible infants with kazoos)
when the Rolling Stones brought their "Tattoo You"
Tour to town.

1998 United got the go-ahead to increase
the capacity of SJP to over 51,000, after
Secretary of State John Prescott ruled against a public enquiry. 2001
Coventry City striker Craig Bellamy looked
increasingly likely to be making a switch to SJP, in a deal worth over £6m.
At the time it seemed Gordon Strachan's side did well to
claw back most of the £6.5m he cost
them from Norwich City.
2007 Newcastle's Board of Directors were asked for
their resignation
as Mike Ashley's SJP revolution
gathered pace.
This was bad news for; Bruce
Shepherd (brother of Freddy), Timothy Revill, Douglas Hall
and Allison Antonopoulos (Dougie's sister).
At this point, Chairman
Freddy Shepherd still looked to be staying in some
capacity.
Meanwhile, Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins were both
being continuously linked with moves away from Tyneside.
2008
Speaking from Marbella, where he had been using the facilities
of the local football club, Shay Given dismissed reports
of a move to Arsenal:
"I've been with Newcastle since 1997 and I'll soon be
getting a Geordie twang. It's a great football club with
fantastic fans, so I have no reason to leave.
"I have three years left on my contract and I am very
settled in the North East. I see myself staying at
Newcastle for the rest of my career.
He joined Manchester City seven months later.
2011
Northampton Town
completed a free transfer move for defender Ben Tozer, following his
release by United, 12 months before his contract expired.
In one of his last acts as Newcastle boss, Sam Allardyce sanctioned a £1m move
for Ben from Swindon Town in January 2008.
2013 Director of F***all, Joe Kinnear, did himself no favours whatsoever
