2026/27 :
Low key start...
Newcastle
will begin the 2026/27 season against Liverpool at SJP on Sunday
August 23rd at 4.30pm - the fifth time in the last six years that
United have had a home opener.
In addition to player-related sub-plots - a possible PL debut for
Toon target Victor Munoz and the first time Alexander Isak has faced
his former club - it also sees new Reds boss Andoni Iraola test his
unbeaten PL record on Tyneside.
That Liverpool home game is live on
Sky Sports, who hold UK live transmission rights along with TNT
Sports. The first live schedule release date is in the week
commencing Monday July 13th, covering our first PL away game at
Spurs.
That game take places over the August Bank Holiday weekend and were
it to be played on the Sunday, would clash with rail work affecting
Kings Cross services.
The five midweek match rounds see Manchester United, Nottingham
Forest and Chelsea visit SJP. Trips to Old Trafford and the City
Ground comprise our midweek aways.
One Saturday game will be rescheduled as a result of the
opposition's European commitments; United's PL visit to Crystal
Palace on Saturday October 24th just 48 hours after the Eagles are
in Europa League Group Stage action.
Progress for Brighton into the Conference League Group Stage
meanwhile would require their PL visit to Gallowgate on Saturday
November 28th to be rescheduled.
Coventry's
CBS Arena will become the 62nd different PL venue to have hosted Newcastle
when they head there during October for our first visit since
December 2009.
Following last season's away double header, the two festive season
games are both on Tyneside.
This season's Carabao Cup takes place on Sunday March 21st,
coinciding with the visit of Leeds United to SJP.
There's no clash with PL games on any FA Cup round weekend until the
Semi-finals, on or around April 24th. The Magpies are due to host
Ipswich Town that weekend.
The final home game against Crystal Palace is scheduled
on Sunday May 23rd, along with the rest of the PL games that weekend.
Saturday May 22nd is clear for the FA Cup Final.
The closing game of the season then takes the Magpies to promoted Hull City
on Sunday May 30th at 4pm - their first top-flight visit to
Humberside since January 2015.

Update:
Tino blow
News came from England's USA training camp on Tuesday that Tino
Livramento's World Cup had ended without him kicking a ball in
anger.
The Newcastle full back returned to the UK after
reportedly suffering a calf injury in training, having featured
in last week's kickabout against New Zealand in Tampa.
That was Livramento's first pitch time since mid April, with a thigh
issue keeping him out of United's closing five games.
Thoughts of any late call-up for club
colleague Lewis Hall were dismissed, Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah
promoted from England's standby list instead.
Update:
Progress?
Monday brought multiple reports that Newcastle's new main shirt
sponsor is to be South African soft drink company KNOX, who
already hold training ground naming rights.
It's claimed that the new three year agreement will net
the Magpies up to £60m*, with the 2026/27 season set at a maximum of
£10m and the ceiling for the following two campaigns increasing to
£25m.
The KNOX branding of United's Darsley Park training ground
remains a
separate three year deal that begins next month and will boost the
club's coffers by £6m annually.
* The now-expired three year sponsorship contract with
SELA was confirmed by NUFC in June 2023, when no firm details of
value or duration were publicly divulged.
The replacement deal for the FUN88 brand was claimed to
be worth £25m per year, with no mention of performance-related
clauses, meaning that the Magpies banked £75m.
The biggest difference between 2023 and 2026 is of course
the fact that the SELA shirts were then set to be displayed in
Champions League games and the KNOX ones aren't.
On that basis, it's reasonable to conclude that the £25m
notional fee for 2027/28 and 2028/29 is based on United qualifying
for the prestige European club competition and that the value of
those rights is unchanged since 2023 - certainly from our
negotiations.
Update:
Recruitment mainstay confirms departure
Although initially denied by some media outlets, the 15 year career of Steve Nickson at
Gallowgate will end with his departure this summer.
The 61 year-old moved from Blackburn Rovers to United
ahead of the 2011/12 season, switching from a youth recruitment
brief to scouting senior players in 2017.
Nickson continued in his role as head of recruitment as
Director of Football appointments came and went, but the presence of Andy Howe and his current position as Senior
Football Executive looks to have been the trigger that saw him seek alternative employment.
That is set to be as Sporting Director of Championship side West
Ham, but the Mail also claim an approach to Nixon by fellow second
tier club Wrexham.

Mag
Ewen - official

Newcastle have confirmed
their first senior signing of the close season,
completing the transfer of Reims goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen for a
claimed £18.5m.
Standing at 6ft
6in, the 20 year-old Parisian flew
into Newcastle on Monday, before
completing the formalities of his move on Tuesday.
A fluent English speaker, Jaouen made 34
appearances last season for the Ligue 2 side, keeping 15 clean
sheets.
Winning his first U21
international cap against Switzerland in November 2025, Ewen began
his career with Guingamp. Switching to Reims in 2023, a senior debut
followed while on loan at Rodez during 2024.

2026/27:
Everton (n) confirmed

Newcastle are to visit Edinburgh's Murrayfield
Stadium as part of their pre-season programme, facing
Everton.
The Magpies and Toffees meet on
Wednesday August 12th at 5.15pm with all ticket sales via Ticketmaster.
As NUFC aren't selling tickets direct, there's no loyalty point
requirement and no point will be issued to attendees.
Prices ranged from
£35 to £75 for adults plus booking fees of up to £13 - an
incredible uplift in cost compared to the £25 tickets at Celtic last
July.
While outrageous, the pricing is little shock to anyone attending
the Premier League Summer Series of games featuring Newcastle in the
USA during 2023.
That was also handled by Ticketmaster, with the cheapest ticket for
United's games against Aston Villa (in Philadelphia) and Chelsea (in
Atlanta) £49 when including booking fees.
There has been an inevitable backlash from fans unhappy at paying
the equivalent of Champions League ticket prices, the line "from
£35" factually correct but grossly misleading.
Although not administering this game (but presumably approving the
ticket prices), Newcastle's opportunity to make amends will arise in
the form of the home friendlies.
A sensible pricing policy for those games would seem like a small
but necessary action after the Lothian shakedown.
The teatime kick-off does mean that it's possible to get back to
London Kings Cross via train post-match - which may be handy, given
the price of hotels in Edinburgh due to the annual Fringe Festival
taking place at the same time.
We're uncertain whether this really is a "dry run" to test the
viability of staging future NUFC games at Murrayfield, were SJP to
be unavailable due to reconstruction.
Regarding the rest of pre-season, the players will report back
around
July 13th and include a training camp in the Spanish resort of La Manga.
A pair of home friendlies over the weekend of August 15th/16th are
anticipated, with opponents still tbc.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply for away tickets, 24 hours to determine success, then 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a
ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.
The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division usually get two hours head start.
NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log
on and complete your purchase.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a
reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.
Only those within the new loyalty point total are
eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already
closed.
PL away ticket prices will remain unchanged at £30 for both 2026/27 and
2027/28.

On This Day in History |

19th June |

Born Or Died:
1931
Neville Black born, Ashington.
(1949-53)

Inside forward recruited
from Pegswood
in September 1949 who failed to make a league
appearance during his time at United.
However, Neville was part of the Magpies side
beaten 4-2 in the 1952 Charity Shield game by Manchester United at Old
Trafford.
Joining Exeter City the following January, he moved on to Rochdale ahead of the
1953/54 season.
Returning to his native Northumberland after three seasons at Spotland, Black
signed for his hometown club Ashington.
His death was recorded during 2004.
1936
Gordon Hughes born, Washington. (1956-63)

Right winger who played for Fatfield Juniors before joining Easington Lane,
where he was rejected by both Boro and the mackems after trials due to his
diminutive size.
Moving on to Tow Law Town and scoring a hat trick for Durham on his county
debut, Gordon was set to sign professionally for Workington Town when Newcastle
scout George Jobling offered a trial at SJP.
A part-time professional contract was offered and accepted, with Hughes still working at Harraton Colliery when
his United first team debut came in September
1956.
5 foot 6 inches tall by then, Gordon made an instant impression in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at SJP
despite having played just five reserve games previously.
However, his ascent to the first team was abruptly halted just two days later,
when playing for United in a testimonial match against Morton at Cappielow
Park.
An ankle fracture put him out of action for three months and Hughes managed
just one more first team appearance that season.
The following four campaigns saw him play regularly - especially following the
arrival of manager Charlie Mitten - although his best return of 34 starts and
11 goals came in the relegation season of 1960/61.
The replacement of Mitten by Norman Smith in October 1961 saw Hughes feature
more sporadically, before injury kept him out of the first team picture until
March 1963.
Making half a dozen late season starts for Joe Harvey, Gordon was then sold to
Derby County for £12K as part of a clearout - not a bad return for a player
bought for £30!
In five seasons at the Baseball Ground, Hughes made over 200 appearances for
the Rams, later playing for both Lincoln City and Boston United before retiring
in March 1972.
He later returned to live
near Durham.

1949
Vivian Dennis Busby born, Slough. (1971-72)

Striker who had a three
month loan spell with United from Luton Town
during the 1971/72 season, scoring on his debut in a 3-0 victory at West
Bromwich Albion.
Viv's final game came in the infamous FA Cup defeat at Hereford, a result which
wrecked hopes of a permanent transfer to SJP as he later recollected:
"If we had won that game Newcastle
would have made enough from the next tie, at home to West Ham, to pay the £60,000
asking price. After we lost, Joe Harvey asked me to come and see him the next
day and he told me he couldn't be seen to be spending money. I was straight in
my car and back down the road to Luton.
"It
was a real destroyer for me, because I'd had such a good partnership with
Malcolm Macdonald at Luton and we started off so well when I came to join him
at Newcastle.
"They
never show you the goal we scored at Hereford: me crossing from the right and
Malcolm heading it in. We thought that was it: 1-0, just a few minutes to go,
game over. But then Ronnie Radford hit that screamer and Ricky George finished
us off.
Beginning his playing career at non-league Wycombe Wanderers in 1966, Busby became a
Hatter in 1969.
Returning to Kenilworth Road after his stint in Toon, he made a £25K switch to
Fulham in August 1973 and played for the Cottagers in their 1975 FA Cup Final
defeat.
September 1976 saw Viv on the move again, joining Norwich City for a £50K fee.
After just over a year in Norfolk though he signed for Stoke City - appearing
in another FA Cup giant-killing, when the Potters lost at home to Blyth
Spartans.
Later loaned to Sheffield United, Busby then played in the USA for Tulsa Roughnecks
and returned to the UK for spells with both Blackburn
Rovers and York City.
Beginning his coaching career at Bootham Crescent under boss Denis Smith, he
later followed him to the mackems and also worked as a Manchester City scout.
A first foray into management came in 1993 at Hartlepool United but he lasted
less than a year before being ousted.
Scouting for Southampton and West Brom and working as a local radio pundit in
the North East, Busby got back into football in 1995 when appointed as
assistant to Howard Kendall at Sheffield United - a former playing colleague at
Stoke City.
Following Kendall as he returned to Everton in 1997 for a third stint as
Toffees boss, later becoming
reserve team boss at Fulham.
Working as assistant to Colin Todd at Swindon Town, Viv was diagnosed with
leukaemia in September 2000 and spent 10 months in hospital as he underwent
what was a successful course of chemotherapy.
Returning to coaching with Sheffield Wednesday in 2004, Busby worked with the
Owls female
sides as part of their Football in the
Community programme.
A return to York City as caretaker boss came a year later, before being
appointed as Gretna's Director of Football.
Viv join
the backroom staff at non-league Workington in 2007, living in Carlisle. He announced
his retirement in 2011.
His death was announced in May 2024 at the age of 74.

1975
Bernard Allou born,
Cocody, Ivory Coast.
(1997)

Newcastle took
this Paris St Germain midfielder on trial during September 1997 and he netted
in a friendly at Morpeth Town.
However no deal was forthcoming and Allou returned to France before agreeing a
move to Japanese side Nagoya Grampus 8.
By 1999 he had made it to England, signing for Nottingham Forest but making
only a handful of appearances before exiting from the City Ground during 2001.
Continuing his career in Belgium, Allou played for RWD
Molenbeek, White Star Woluwe, Leopold Uccle and RCS Braine.
By 2012 he was an agent and player boss of Belgian minnows Trabzon Schaerbeek,
later serving as coach of FC Saint-Josse.
He then reappeared in 2020 as Sporting Director of Brussels-based FC
Suryoyes.

1968 A momentous day for the Magpies, as a meeting of
the Fairs Cup Executive in Copenhagen confirmed the
expansion of the competition to 64 clubs.
That was enough to give Newcastle a spot in the First Round draw, which saw
them paired with Dutch side Feyenoord.
1998 Newcastle
recouped the £2.5m they had paid Heerenveen for Jon Dahl Tomasson
when he returned to Holland with Feyenoord.
A player
who looked a world-beater in pre- season lacked a
good first touch and needed too long to settle on the ball
- time that just wasn't available in England.
JDT was played out of position as a centre forward in many
of his Newcastle games, but few tears were shed on his
departure.
Almost inevitably, he blossomed to collect domestic titles in Holland, Italy
and Germany, UEFA Cup and Champions League winners medals
and make a century of international appearances.
1998 Newcastle
completed the signing of Stephane Guivarc'h from
Auxerre for £3.5m.
A World Cup winner arriving
on Tyneside - surely fans licked their lips in anticipation? Err, well, certainly not those who had watched his
'performances' in France.
2001 Steve Harper became the latest Magpie to sign an
extended contract, following team mates Andy Griffin
and Nolberto Solano.
2014
Another full game for Cheick Tiote, but his Ivory Coast
side slipped to a 1-2 defeat against Colombia in Brasilia
- a scoreline that jeopardised their chances of making it
past the World Cup Final Group Stage.
2020 72 hours before the Premier League resumed after a 15 week
COVID layoff,
Steve Bruce faced the press online.
He confirmed that squad members whose permanent contracts and
loans would expire before the end of the extended season
had verbally agreed to continue playing: Nabil Bentaleb,
Valentino Lazaro, Danny Rose, Andy Carroll, Javier
Manquillo and Matty Longstaff.
2020 It was a different story at fellow PL side Bournemouth, Ryan Fraser rejecting a short-term deal extension in order
to become a free agent at the end of June.
By September the Scottish international had signed a
five year contract at SJP.
2024
In Euro
2024,
Fabian Schar looked to have got on the score
sheet in Cologne... for the Scots.
The goal was officially credited to Scott McTominay,
although goalkeeper Yann Sommer would undoubtedly have saved the shot without the big deflection. It finished 1-1.
