PS: Engineering works over the weekend of the Fulham game mean that no trains will run between York and Northallerton in both directions on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Bus replacements will run between York and Darlington.

(Unlike other weekends when similar closures are in place, there are no direct services running via the longer route through Hartlepool).

Update:
Extra train after Arsenal

LNER confirm an additional service will run from London Kings Cross to Newcastle this coming Saturday as follows:

Leaves Kings Cross 8.45pm, York 10.48pm, Darlington 11.19pm, Durham 11.36pm, arrives Newcastle 11.53pm.

The last train of the day to Newcastle leaves Kings Cross at 9.03pm, arriving into Newcastle just after midnight.

Update:
Villa capacity reduced

Aston Villa confirm that rebuilding of the North Stand at Villa Park will see a reduced capacity there next season.

Initially that will mean the loss of 6,500 seats, resulting in a revised capacity of around 37,000. It's unclear whether the away allocation of 3,000 in the Doug Ellis Stand will alter, as displaced home fans are temporarily relocated.

Originally scheduled to take two seasons, Villa now claim that the construction will be finished within a year, with 2027/28 bringing an increased capacity of over 50,000.

Update:
Germans eye Gordon

Hours after confirming their latest Bundesliga title victory, Bayern Munich's close season recruitment plans are predicted to include bidding for Anthony Gordon.

The Times report that Newcastle have placed a £75m valuation on the England international as they seek to finance their own signings - and that representatives of Gordon may meet with the Bayern officials soon.

The same outlet claims that Gordon is "open" to the prospect of a switch to the Germans, rating them "clear favourites" ahead of other suitors Liverpool and Arsenal.

PS: Bayern's interest in Gordon is believed to pre-date his move to Tyneside in 2023 - links to the Bavarians reported during 2019, when the-then 18 year-old had made just one senior competitive appearance for the Toffees.

2025/26:
U21s play on

Although their PL2 campaign ended without a place in the playoffs following a failure to finish in the top 16, United's second string will continue their season this weekend.

Robbie Stockdale's side are one of 16 teams contesting the inaugural Professional Development League play-offs, a competition involve the following eight teams finishing in places 17 to 24 in PL2 (Category One Academies):

Nottingham Forest, Everton, Reading, Stoke City, Newcastle, Wolves, Norwich City and Derby County.

Plus the top eight PDL teams (Category Two Academies):

Brentford*, Sheffield United, Bournemouth, Swansea City, Peterborough United, Huddersfield Town, Watford and Charlton Athletic.

The new competition runs as a straight knockout, with one-off ties through to a final on or before Monday May 18th.

Confirmation of our opponents and venue are awaited, although other fixtures are appearing and indicate that the highest place PL2 side automatically faces the lowest PDL side. On that basis we'll be away to Swansea City.

Last 16 ties are scheduled to be played between Friday April 24th and Monday April 27th.

* Coinciding with their title victory, Brentford have been awarded Category One Academy status for next season.

Premier League:
Arsenal (a)

Saturday sees the Magpies face the Gunners at the Emirates. It's a 5.30pm kick-off live on Sky Sports.

Newcastle go into this game looking to avoid their fifth successive defeat in all competitions, something that they haven't endured since January 2021.

Team:
Joelinton serves the second of his two match ban while Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento are predicted to miss out through injury. Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth remain unavailable.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 19/4
The draw 7/2

AFC: It's expected that Mikel Merino, Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori will all miss out on Saturday.

Arsenal have lost four successive domestic matches including back-to-back Premier League games - the latter for the first time since December 2023.

On home ground this season, Mikel Arteta's side have won 12, drawn two and lost the other two of their 16 PL games - Manchester United and Bournemouth both victorious. The only away side to keep a clean sheet were Liverpool.

Referee: Sam Barrott - fourth appointment involved United this season for the Yorkshire whistler, who took control of our 2-1 home win over Manchester City, 0-0 draw away at Wolves and 1-3 FA Cup home loss to Manchester City.

U18s:
Another Derby defeat

Derby County U18s  3  Newcastle U18s  1

United's U18 side slipped to defeat at Derby's Oakwood Academy on Saturday, with Alfie Seldon on target.

All the goals came after the interval with County's Kieran Clarke getting the first in the 52nd minute before Remi Harvey doubled the lead after 70 minutes.

Seldon pulled one back in the 84th minute but Zanye Blake sealed the home win in the first minute of added time.

Team: Dowell, Bloomer, McPartland (Patterson 74), Epia, Johnson, M.Miley, Hutchison (Gilligan 61), Ferreira, O'Donovan (Seldon 60), Mills, Wooster (Benjamin 78).
Sub n/u: Holland.

Booked: M.Miley.

There was a competitive U18 debut for Theo Benjamin, son of Trevor, who played Premier League football for Leicester City during a lengthy career. Like his father, 15 year-old Theo is a striker.

Update:

Trevan Sanusi (Lorient):
Saturday saw Lorient record a 2-0 home success against Marseille in Ligue 1, but Trevan was nowhere to be seen.

Harrison Ashby/Joe White (Bradford City):
No sign of Joe again but Harrison arrived as a 66th minute replacement during Saturday's 2-2 draw at Barnsley.

With three games remaining, the Bantams sit fourth in League One and on course for a promotion playoff place.

Charlie McArthur (Airdrieonians):
Another 90 minute shift for Charlie on Saturday as his current side shared four goals at home to Partick Thistle in the Scottish Championship.

Max Thompson (Ayr United):

The Honest Men lost 1-2 at Ross County in the Scottish Championship on Saturday but Max wasn't in the squad, reportedly due to injury.

Matt Targett (Middlesbrough):
A 2-2 draw at Ipswich Town on Sunday saw the Tractor Boys reclaim the second automatic promotion place but playoff-bound Boro make seven games without victory.

Matt played the full game at the cost of a booking.

Antonio Cordero (Cadiz)

Relegation for Cadiz from La Liga 2 moved one step closer after a 0-3 defeat at Gijon on Sunday - their fifth loss in  succession making it just four points from a possible 42.

With six games left, they remain fifth bottom, three points clear of the fourth and final relegation position.

Antonio started but was withdrawn at half time.

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville):

Travis Hernes (Groningen):

2026/27:
Sky Blue success

A 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers on Friday night was enough to confirm promotion to the Premier League for Coventry City, who were last in the top flight back in 2000/01.

Although Newcastle have played both in both the League Cup and Championship at the CBS Arena, next season will mark their PL debut there: previous meetings with the Sky Blues taking place at their former Highfield Road home.

That will make the CBS Arena the 62nd different venue that the Magpies have played at in the PL, with promotion for either Millwall or Wrexham further increasing that total.

As to who joins Coventry, it may take until the final round of games on Saturday May 2nd for the second team gaining automatic promotion to be confirmed, as well as the four going on to contest the playoffs.

The latter concludes at Wembley on Saturday May 23rd - the day before Newcastle's season closer at Fulham.

2025/26:
PL fixture update

Sat 25.04.2026 Arsenal (a) 5.30pm Sky
Friday finally saw the Premier League confirm that the amended kick-off time for our visit to the Emirates will remain unchanged.

Sun 17.05.2026 tbc West Ham (h) 3pm tbc
All PL fixtures that weekend are provisionally listed as Sun 17.05.2026, with Sat 16.05.2026 set aside exclusively for the FA Cup Final to be played at Wembley.

West Ham's FA Cup quarter-final defeat means that our fixture can take place over that weekend, but depending on the live TV selections could still be played on Fri 15.05.2026, Sun 17.05.2026 or Mon 18.05.2026.

PL games are also set to be played on Tue 19.05.2026, but it's expected that those only will be the ones postponed due to teams involved playing in the FA Cup Final.

Although PL's guidance stated that the live TV selections for that weekend would be available on Wed 08.04, the FSA (Football Supporters Association) spotted that this section of the PL website was sneakily amended to read:

Post-FA Cup semi-finals: FA Cup semi-finals take place on 25-26 April. This is to avoid further amendments to Premier League matches scheduled for the same weekend.

2026/27:
Season ticket waiting
list announced

NUFC confirm that a season ticket waiting list will open up ahead of next season, with a minimum of 250 available.

Entry to the waiting list is restricted to club members, who can sign up between Mon 18.05.2026 and Sun 31.05.2026.

A ballot will then take place with entrants placed in priority groups according to criteria set by the club. Ballot winners can then purchase season tickets from Wed 10.06.2026.

While the purchase of a 2026/27 membership isn't required to join the waiting list, anyone who doesn't win this ballot would need to continue paying for membership in order to maintain their place in the queue for future ST releases.

While the minimum figure of 250 for this year is set, there's no mention of how many STs will be offered thereafter.

Update:
Toon in the USA

Newcastle pair Les Yeutembip and Jayden Kouossu both started for England U16s on Thursday, as they played their opening game in the Vertex Cup in the USA.

Midfielder Kouosso gave the young Lions a half time lead against the hosts in Miami, but the USA levelled and went on to win 5-4 on penalties - neither Magpie taking a penalty.

Sunday then saw England come from behind to defeat Argentina 2-1, with Jayden a late arrival from the bench.

England conclude against Mexico on Wednesday.

Johan joins: official

Update: Ecuador lost 1-3 to Argentina in the Semi-final of the South American U17 Championships on Thursday. Martinez wasn't on the scoresheet.

Despite that though, they have qualified for the U17 World Cup Finals, staged this November in Qatar.

From NUFC, Tuesday:

Newcastle United have completed a deal to sign Ecuadorian winger Johan Martinez from Independiente del Valle.

The 16-year-old will officially join the Magpies after his 18th birthday in the summer of 2027 (on May 10th) and will remain with Independiente del Valle in the meantime.

Johan was part of the Independiente del Valle youth team who won the Ecuadorian U17 title in December 2025.

Internationally, he is currently starring for Ecuador in the South American U17 Championships and was on target in Sunday’s victory over Chile as they reached the semi-finals.

Ross Wilson, Newcastle United Sporting Director, said:

"We’re delighted to beat off serious competition from leading clubs across Europe to bring Johan to Newcastle United.

"Identifying and recruiting promising young players is a key part of how we build for the future, and our scouting and recruitment teams have worked diligently to secure Johan’s signature.

"Independiente del Valle have a strong reputation for developing young players and Johan has undoubtedly benefited from that environment.

"He will continue his progress there while we maintain a close connection with his development, and we look forward to welcoming him to Newcastle next year.”

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.

Only those within the new loyalty point total are eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

PL away ticket prices will remain unchanged at £30 for both 2026/27 and 2027/28.

On This Day in History

Born Or Died:

1991 Death of Jackie Bell, 51.
(1956-62)

Evenwood-born Bell passed away less than a year after United faced his hometown club in a fund-raising friendly.

Diagnosed with diabetes while a junior at SJP, Jackie was forced to have a leg amputated later in life.

1993 Ryan Page born, Newcastle.
(2008-11)

Academy defender/midfielder whose debut for Newcastle U18s came in a 2-2 home draw with Sheffield United days before celebrating his sixteenth birthday in 2009.

Graduating to the reserve team squad but remaining an unused substitute at that level, Ryan was released by United in 2011 and signed for North Shields.

After a brief spell at fellow Northern League side South Shields, Page rejoined the Robins later that season.

He later appeared for Newcastle Benfield, Hebburn Town, West Allotment Celtic, Team Northumbria, Heaton Stannington, Seaton Delaval and Killingworth Town.

This friendly took place at a significant point in the history of both clubs; Northern League Newcastle soon to be accepted into the Second Division for the following season.

Accrington meanwhile sent a second XI to Tyneside as their first team were playing a test match (playoff) against Sheffield United at the neutral venue of Trent Bridge.

A 0-1 loss confirmed relegation from Division One and they opted to resign from the Football League rather than play in the Second Division, folding in 1896.

United were looking to retain the trophy that they'd won in a replay at Goodison Park and but were to be frustrated at their hoodoo ground of Crystal Palace for a fifth (and final) time.

Injury deprived the Magpies of influential duo Albert Shepherd and Peter McWilliam - and both were still missing when the Bantams won the replay 1-0 at Old Trafford four days later.

Newcastle trekked to Norfolk for the final of the Norwich Hospital Cup against their Southern League hosts.

After 90 minutes failed to produce a goal, an additional 20 minutes was similarly barren.

The tie was staged at The Nest, a cramped enclosure built on a former chalk pit.

A then-record crowd of 12,000 squeezed into the ground, but unbelievably before the FA petitioned Norwich to close the ground in 1935, over 25,000 somehow witnessed a cup tie there against Sheffield Wednesday.

1920 Newcastle reserves recorded a 9-1 friendly victory against Berwick United at their Union Park ground.

Despite torrential rain, a 1,700 crowd were present but the gate receipts weren't sufficient to save the hosts, who folded ahead of the following season.

Following an enforced two week break since last playing, relegation-haunted United came up short in their "must win" visit to Hillsborough.

However just one of the other five sides in the bottom places avoided defeat, making this a point gained rather than one surrendered.

With central defensive pair John McNamee and Dave Elliott equal to anything the Owls threw at them, "United survived by a blend of hair-raising luck and pluck" reckoned The Journal reporter.

Tommy Baldwin then scored his second of a pulsating game to ensure a point apiece.

1972 At Gallowgate meanwhile, the reserves shared four goals with West Bromwich Albion in the Central League.

The Magpies included two young trialists from Ajax Amsterdam, Jimmy Guy and Luciano Van Callen, but neither impressed.

And it was soon confirmed that the side's "feat" was meaningless, when the Premier Reserve League was revealed for the following season - including Newcastle.

2017 A near-perfect set of results meant that without playing, Newcastle were just one win away from the Premier League.

Huddersfield Town's 1-4 thumping by Fulham and a 2-3 loss at Nottingham Forest left Reading six points behind United with a vastly inferior goal difference.

That meant an Easter Monday home win over Preston North End would guarantee promotion for Rafa Benitez & Co.

Brighton's loss at Norwich City meanwhile resurrected the possibility of Newcastle winning the Championship.

2023 Graeme Carrick's U18s played out a 1-1 draw against Everton at Little Benton, with midfielder Anthony Munda on target.
