Newcastle U21s  1  Wolves U21s  1

Newcastle U21s concluded their PL2 campaign with a rearranged home game on Monday evening, sharing the points with Wolves at Whitley Park.

The match burst into life in the 12th minute when United's Matheos Ferreira saw his first-time shot palmed onto the post by visiting goalkeeper Alfie Brooks.

Wolves went ahead three minutes later, Conor McLeod flighting the ball into the top corner of the net after two shots by team mates were blocked but not fully cleared.

United levelled on 33 minutes after Rory Finneran's ball fell to Sean Neave on the edge of the Wolves box and he claimed his 15th U21 goal of the season with a clinical finish.

The visitors came close to restoring their lead just past the hour when Wes Okoduwa's shot struck the crossbar.

Neave then met a tempting Alex Murphy cross after 66 minutes but was unable to keep his header under the bar.

The home forward was denied a winner from inside the area with seconds left when Brooks blocked his shot, substitute Michael Mills unable to connect with the rebound.

Team: Harris, Watts (Johnson 60), A.Murphy, Pivas, Thompson, Finneran, Ferreira (Mills 76), M.Miley (Fitzgerald 65), Neave, Munda, Seung-soo.
Subs n/u: Harrison, Yildiz.

WWFC: Brooks, Okoduwa, Lochhead, Olagunju, Lembikisa, Ashworth, Bradbury, Ji (White 82), Edozie (Dayman 62), McLeod (Anunlopo 69).
Subs n/u: Arnold, Arnold, Marwa.

Booked: McLeod, Dayman.

Referee: Gareth Thomas.

Crowd: 284

Failing to secure a top 16 finish meant that United missed out on the PL2 playoffs but are one of eight PL2 sides involved in a new competition also featuring the top eight Professional Development League clubs.

Their first opponent in that knockout competition is tbc.

Bad all over

Crystal Palace  2  Newcastle  1

Newcastle returned to Premier League action on Sunday almost three weeks after their last game, but rather than exorcising the ghost of that derby loss, slumped to a loss that followed an unpleasantly familiar pattern.

Will Osula gave United an interval lead that they just about deserved after an anodyne first half during which neither side showed any appreciable appetite for the fight.

Palace at least had the excuse of a European game last Thursday and some consequent squad rotation, but the green-clad Magpies looked anything but a side who had benefited from an extended period in which to regroup.

Aside from one opportunity by Osula to double their lead, Eddie Howe's side never looked in control once the Eagles made a triple substitution and proved unable to shake off their season-long habit of throwing away leads, allowing Crystal Palace to score twice late on.

That all-too familiar capitulation followed the introduction of Jean-Philippe Mateta, whose physical presence was akin to that of mackem forward Brian Brobbey - and who managed to similarly unsettle Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman.

Thiaw conceded a free-kick that Jefferson Lerma headed against the bar before an 80th minute leveller came when Daniel Munoz centred from the right and Tyrick Mitchell hooked the ball back Mateta to head in.

Mateta had replaced the unimpressive Jorgen Strand Larsen - close to a move to Tyneside last Summer - but in response the only Newcastle substitution while they led was when Harvey Barnes was swapped for the out-of-sorts Anthony Gordon, restored to a left wing berth today.

Jacob Ramsey and Nick Woltemade came off the bench at 1-1 but any notions of regaining the lead disappeared when Botman - clad in a protective mask - conceded a spot-kick, grabbing Lerma's shirt as a long throw reached the box.

Ramsdale came close to saving that, having made a fine double stop in an otherwise turgid first half before Osula's 43rd minute goal followed a great move down the right.

The returning Lewis Miley sent over the telling cross and Osula did well to adjust after a touch from a defender, to turn the ball past Dean Henderson from close range.

Miley was one of six changes to the side that started the derby defeat, with Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento, Jacob Murphy, Osula and Thiaw the others.

The names may have changed, but the flaws were evident - and exploited once again. Murphy wore the armband but was anything but inspirational, losing the ball on countless occasions.

As damaging as the Tyne-wear loss was for Howe, this felt like a more significant defeat - a lack of organisation and fight reflecting badly on the management after the reset that the international break had apparently offered.

The lukewarm post match applause from the emptying away end - with as many boos as claps - summed up the trust in the player and their manager that is steadily ebbing away.

Also bizarrely symbolic was substitute Yoane Wissa's ill-judged decision to swap shirts with the home goalscorer, leaving Mateta to milk the home applause while clad in a Newcastle no.9 the wrong way round....

Defeat left Newcastle languishing in 14th place; pre-match talk of starting the push for Europe now very hollow.

The club may have sought to dismiss media headlines that Howe had seven games to save his job after the CEO's recent comments, but this careless, lack-lustre display didn't aid the manager's cause one iota.

Full match report to follow.

Team: Ramsdale, Livramento, Thiaw, Botman, Hall, L.Miley, Joelinton (Ramsey 84), Tonali (Elanga 90+5), J.Murphy (Wissa 90+5), Osula (Woltemade 84), Gordon (Barnes 71).
Subs n/u: Pope, Trippier, Burn, Willock.

Bookings: Thiaw, Joelinton, Ramsdale.

Joelinton inevitably collected his tenth PL booking, which landed him a two game ban.

Goal: Osula 43.

CPFC: Henderson, Richards, Lacroix, Canvot, Munoz, Lerma, Hughes (Wharton 64), Mitchell (Sosa 90+6), Johnson (Sarr 64), Larsen (Mateta 65), Pino (Kamada 76).
Subs n/u: Benitez, Clyne, Devenny, Riad.

Goals: Mateta 80, 90+4pen.

Crowd: 25,141 including 2,687 away supporters.

After the game Eddie Howe said:

"
I understand there's anger and frustration. I’m not blind to anything. I always have to look at myself first. I always say that. I'm number one accountable.

"I don't pick the team based on transfer fees. I pick the team based on what I see.

"It's probably the story of our season: getting into winning positions and not being able to hold on. I can't really put my finger on it."

"A couple of games ago we beat Chelsea away and beat Manchester United and you sit here off the back of a disappointing run and the outside noise is to change everything.

"Sometimes you have got to believe in what you do but, of course, we have to execute it better."

On losing 25 points from winning positions this season:

"I mean, those numbers are incredible, really. It's blighted our season.

"The fact that we haven't been able to not just consolidate really good passages of the game, but go on and score more goals and continue to attack.

"I've said many times that's not the tactical instruction we give the players. We don't want to go 1-0 up and change to a mentality of defending, but we've done it, so I can't say it hasn't happened.

"But then if you are going to defend, we have to defend better than we did and we gave a few chances, but we're still vulnerable towards the end of the game and that's hugely disappointing.

"We were in total control of the game with 60 minutes gone. Then their substitutes made the difference, Mateta in particular. He proved to be a difficult customer for us to deal with.

"A defeat is really harsh on us because we controlled the first half and phases of the second half."

U18s:
Clarets uncorked

Newcastle U18s  2  Burnley U18s  1

Newcastle's U18 side were back in league action at Little Benton on Saturday, defeating a ten man Burnley side to maintain third place in the league.

Goals in either half from Matt Taylor and Alfie Seldon won it for the young Magpies, although Warren Taylor equalised from the spot for the Clarets five minutes after the break.

Newcastle took the lead in the 14th minute, eight minutes before Diandro Fletchman was red-carded for the visitors.

The ten man visitors drew level when Jude Cogdon fouled Tambwe Leonard in the box and Taylor beat Roman Dowell from 12 yards out.

United almost immediately regained the lead, but the crossbar denied Jayden Koussou from distance.

Seldon's sixth goal of the season then came in the 66th minute after being set up by Matt Taylor.

That was enough for Chris Moore's side to claim victory and extend their points tally to 37 with three games of their season remaining. That's two points more than the U18s managed in the whole 2024/25 campaign.

Team: Dowell, trialist (Patterson 77), Bloomer, Epia, Yeutembip (Gilligan 62), Cogdon, Hutchison, Koussou (Ghanem 62), Wooster, Taylor (Callaghan 77), Seldon.
Sub n/u: Holland

Booked: Taylor, Cogdon

United's trialist defender was reported to be 18 year-old Will McPartland, most recently at Middlesbrough.

2025/26:

Moving the goalposts

Two of Newcastle's remaining Premier League fixtures are still subject to possible change - Friday bringing further frustration to the West Ham home game.

Although PL's guidance stated that the live TV selections for that weekend would be available on April 8th, the FSA (Football Supporters Association) spotted that this section of the PL website was sneakily amended to read:

Post-FA Cup semi-finals.

FA Cup semi-finals take place on 25-26 April. This is to avoid further amendments to Premier League matches scheduled for the same weekend.

So, with no prior warning, the PL have reduced the time period to make plans involving that game by almost three weeks: further proof if it were needed that match-going supporters are the very least of their concerns.

Sun 17.05.2026 tbc West Ham (h) 3pm tbc
All PL fixtures that weekend are provisionally listed as Sun 17.05.2026, with Sat 16.05.2026 set aside exclusively for the FA Cup Final to be played at Wembley.

West Ham's FA Cup quarter-final defeat means that our fixture can take place over that weekend, but depending on the live TV selections could be played on Fri 15.05.2026, Sun 17.05.2026 or Mon 18.05.2026.

PL games are also set to be played on Tue 19.05.2026, but it's expected that those only will be the ones postponed due to teams involved playing in the FA Cup Final.

Sat 25.04.2026 Arsenal (a) 5.30pm Sky
PL advice regarding this game is that the rescheduled slot remains "subject to participation in UEFA competitions."

Should Arsenal win their Champions League quarter-final tie against Sporting Lisbon, they'd be in Semi-final first leg action on Tue 28.04.2026 or Wed 29.04.2026.

Following the first leg in Portugal, the Gunners lead 1-0 going into the second leg this coming Wed, 15.04.2026.

Our visit to Arsenal remains at risk of further rescheduling at very short notice, although their exit from the CL rather than progression in it looks to be the deciding factor for the PL.

The lack of any PL games on Sun 26.04.2026 had prompted speculation that our game could be moved were Arsenal to be eliminated by Sporting - and then have a free midweek following our visit.

However, Arsenal have now confirmed that their Women's Champions League Semi-final against Lyon will be played at the Emirates on Sun 26.04.2026.

That removes the Sunday option and whether the Arsenal men are still in the CL or not, there seems no reason for a further amendment to our rescheduled fixture at 5.30pm on Sat 25.04.2026. Hopefully.

Saturday sees the Cherries in Toon, as Eddie Howe makes another attempt to record a first Premier League success for the Magpies against his former club.

Although Newcastle have beaten Bournemouth at SJP in both Carabao Cup and FA Cup ties under Howe, they are winless in all seven home or away PL meetings to date - drawing five and losing the other two.

Since our FA Cup success at SJP on penalties in January, Andoni Iraola's side are unbeaten in all 11 fixtures.

It's an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm start.

The visitors have taken an allocation of 1,726 tickets.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are offered to applicants with a reduced loyalty points total. Only those within the new loyalty point total are then eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

PL away tickets remain at £30 for the rest of this season, 2026/27 and 2027/28.

However, Jimmy was never able to claim a regular starting place in the side and was moved on to Aberdeen at the end of the 1908/09 campaign - Wilf Low going the opposite way in a part-exchange deal.

He went on to make over 200 appearances in six seasons at Pittodrie, before his playing career came to an end when normal league football was suspended during WW1.

1926 Jorge Oliver "George" Robledo born, Iquique, Chile. (1949-53)

Chilean-born with an English mother, George and his family relocated to England in 1932 and worked as a miner, appearing for Huddersfield Town as an amateur.

Signing for Barnsley in 1943 (along with his younger brother, Eduardo), the goalscoring form of George brought him to Newcastle's attention and he and Eduardo joined United in a joint £26,500 deal early in 1949.

Debuting in a 2-0 home win over Charlton in February 1949, his first senior goal for the Magpies came a month later, hitting the winner in a 2-1 derby win at SJP.

George became the first South American to appear in an FA Cup Final when United beat Blackpool in 1951 and a year later, headed the only goal of the game as Arsenal were beaten and the trophy was retained.

Both he and his brother returned to Chile in 1953, signing for the Colo-Colo club and winning two league titles. George later played for O'Higgins before finally hanging up his boots in 1961.

Capped 31 times for Chile between 1950 and 1957 and netting eight goals, George later worked as a sports teacher and made a return visit to Tyneside during the 1980s.

He succumbed to a heart attack in April 1989 and is buried in Santiago.

1941 Matthew Hogg born, Dinnington.
(19??-61)
Full back who failed to make the grade at SJP, moving on to Darlington. Matty later appeared for South Shields.

1944 George Watkin
born, Chopwell.
(1960-63)

Centre forward George joined Newcastle in 1960 and played in the FA Youth Cup winning side two years later, scoring six times.

His sole senior competitive game for United was a 0-0 draw at Bury in December 1962 deputising for the indisposed Barrie Thomas.

Leaving SJP in 1963, George appeared for Kings Lynn, Cambridge City and Chesterfield before returning to his native North East with Gateshead in 1965.

Living near Consett, he was sadly diagnosed as suffering from Parkinson's Disease during 2002. He passed away in July 2018.

1974 John Watson born, South Shields. (1990-93)

Forward who joined from Wallsend Boys Club and came through United's junior and reserve ranks to earn a professional deal.

Appearing mostly as a right back while at Newcastle, John made his debut off the bench in 1-2 loss to already-relegated Hull City at St. James' Park in May 1991.

A second senior outing then came as a substitute during United's 0-3 defeat at Bari in the Anglo-Italian Cup in December 1992.

Following an unsuccessful trial at West Bromwich Albion, Watson joined Scunthorpe United ahead of the 1993/94 season.

However, things failed to work out at the Iron and he returned to the region to join Gateshead - playing at the International Stadium in three different spells.

After some time in the USA he returned to play for Durham City, taking temporary command there in 2005.

Two spells with Whitley Bay, one with Newcastle Benfield and a stint with Bedlington Terriers (including taking caretaker charge) followed, before John ended his playing days with Annfield Plain.

Watson worked for Gateshead Council and continued his playing career in local veteran's football - with 2016 finding him in the Wallsend Winstons Over 40s side.

1997 Callum Roberts born, Newcastle. (2013-19)

A pupil at Churchill Community College in Wallsend, striker/winger Callum first linked up with Newcastle aged eight, before joining the club's Academy as a scholar in 2013.

Debuting at U18 level in a home win over Aston Villa the previous October, Roberts then netted twice against Stoke City in only his second competitive appearance.

Rewarded with an U21 debut against West Ham at Whitley Park in September 2013, a fine display against Liverpool at Anfield six months later saw Callum net in a 2-5 loss.

January 2015 saw Roberts make his senior bow for the club, arriving as a second half substitute during the 0-1 away defeat at Leicester City in the FA Cup.

Callum then signed a deal running until 2019 before a loan to Gateshead soon after. However he made just three appearances before returning.

Continuing to play for Newcastle reserves, he was loaned to Kilmarnock in January 2017 but failed to find the net in 11 appearances (five starts).

A rare Magpie first team outing then came in a pre-season friendly at Preston North End during July 2018, before resuming for the second string XI and bagging 12 league and cup goals that season.

There was an unexpected return to senior service in January 2019, in a FA Cup Third Round Replay at Blackburn Rovers.

Both he and fellow reserve Sean Longstaff netted in a 4-2 victory at Ewood Park, but while Longstaff retained his place in the first team, Roberts wasn't so fortunate.

A loan move to fourth tier side Colchester United followed, but after just three substitute appearances totalling less than 40 minutes he was recalled.

Failing to win a new deal at SJP, Callum began pre-season on trial at Southend United but was almost immediately injured.

Featuring for Boro U23s in the early weeks of the 2019/20 season, Roberts turned up at Lee Clark's Blyth Spartans side.

After bagging a hatful of goals for them, Callum signed for National League side Notts County during January 2020.

Helping them to the promotion playoff final at Wembley, he netted against Harrogate Town but ended up on the losing side.

Two further seasons at Meadow followed during which he overcame fitness issues and regained his goal touch before leaving in July 2022, when signing for Aberdeen.

Callum's next move took him South of the border, signing for National League North Scunthorpe United in June 2023.

He scored an impressive 21 times in 41 appearances in his first season and has followed that up with 19 from 40 this season so far as the Iron push for promotion back to League Division Two.

1999 Tyrique Bartlett born, Zurich, Switzerland. (2016-19)

The son of South African international striker Shaun, Tyrique was born in Switzerland while his father played for FC Zurich, but raised in South Africa and London.

First spotted appearing for Newcastle's U23 side in a training ground kickabout against Burnley in December 2016, the striker scored in a similar game with Kilmarnock soon after.

Following receipt of his FIFA clearance, Tyrique
made his competitive Magpies debut in a Northumberland Senior Cup victory over Northern League Blyth FC in late 2017.

A handful of other appearances followed for the U23s that season, Bartlett also making an international debut when representing South Africa at U20 level.

However, ankle ligament problems sidelined Tyrique during the following season and he was missing until after the turn of the year, marking his comeback with goals against Reading and Wolves.

That wasn't enough to win an extended deal on Tyneside though and he left that summer.

Bartlett's next port of call was Cape Umoya United in South Africa, signing for them during February 2020. However he had departed by the end of the year and joined Cape Town Spurs - remaining there until released in 2022.

This they did, getting one five minutes before half-time and then two more in six second half minutes.
