Update:
Schar set to stay
Speaking to the media on
Friday, Eddie Howe confirmed that a contract extension is in
the offing for defender Fabian Schar, who is set to become a
free agent this summer.
The 34 year-old former Swiss international made the last of his 251
league and cup appearances against Leeds United last January. Having
recovered from an ankle injury, he's currently recuperating after an
operation on his foot.
Premier League:
Fulham (a)

Newcastle's final Premier League game of the season takes them to
the banks of the Thames on Sunday.
In common with the rest of the Premier League fixture programme,
it's a 4pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports.
All 2,701 away tickets at Craven Cottage are now sold, with
temperatures forecast to be 32 degrees at kick-off.
The Magpies conclude their away programme in London for a
fourth successive season, having won one, drawn one and lost the
other of the earlier trio.
2019 and 2021 saw them similarly wrap up proceedings by
collecting maximum points at Fulham.
Eddie Howe's side can still finish as high as ninth in the
table, but their hopes of European qualification are over.
As a consequence of that, the Magpies will enter the Carabao Cup in
the Second Round (dates tbc).
United are looking for a third victory of the season against
Fulham, following 2-1 wins on Tyneside in the both the PL and League
Cup.
Team:
Lewis Miley, Valentino Livramento, Emil
Krafth, Fabian Schar and Joelinton are all expected to miss out.
Coral rate this game as follows:
NUFC win 11/8
The draw 13/5
FFC win 9/5

FFC:
Joachim Andersen is suspended, with Jonah Kusi-Asare and Ryan
Sessegnon both injury doubts.
Marco Silva goes into the final game of his current contract with an
uncertain future - and links in his home country to the vacancy at
Benfica.
This will be the tenth time that he's managed the Cottagers against
the Magpies: the previous nine meetings have ended in seven wins for
United, two losses and no draws.
At Craven Cottage in the PL this season, Fulham have won 10 games,
lost six and drawn the other two.
Like Newcastle, they have only a top ten finish to target on Sunday,
with no prospect of European qualification.
Referee: Rob Jones - a fourth Magpie match appointment for
the scouser this season, following on from a 0-0 draw at
Bournemouth, 1-3 loss at West Ham and 3-1 win at Burnley.

Stats:
Newcastle have scored 17 times in their 18 PL games on the road
this so far this season, less than half of their 2023/24 total of 36
and inferior to last season's tally of 28.
Were they not to find the net on Sunday, that total of 17 would
be the fewest since the 2015/16 relegation season when they scraped
up to 12.
18 PL fixtures away from SJP have harvested 17 points, via four
wins and five draws. That compares unfavourably with last season's
final total of 28 points, but success in SW6 would see United match
2023/24's 20 point haul.

2026/27:
More Murrayfield talk

Update: speaking to the
media on Friday, Eddie Howe confirmed that pre-season will begin on
July 13th and include a training camp in the Spanish resort of La
Manga.
Earlier: Wednesday brought further claims of
a pre-season fixture between Newcastle and Everton at Edinburgh's Murrayfield
Stadium, possibly on Wednesday August 12th.
A game on that date appeared on the Ticketmaster website before the
linked page was taken down - neither club have confirmed the fixture
as yet.
A pair of home friendlies over the weekend of August 15th/16th is
anticipated, with Serie A side AS Roma and French League Strasbourg
among rumoured opponents.
Update:
Saudis seek partners
Following reports by Reuters news that PIF were in talks to dilute
its stake in Newcastle United, The Times claiming that up
to 25% of their shareholding is in line to be sold.
They write that it "is seen as key in an attempt to get equity
into the club before the announcement of a proposed £200m training
ground at Woolsington and further talks on a possible new stadium
that could cost more than £1bn."
The Times calculate that selling that shareholding could
raise £300m+, based on the club's claimed value of £1.5bn and that
the investment would be crucial to help fund either a redevelopment
of St. James' Park or a brand new stadium.

Update:
Southampton's appeal against their expulsion and points deduction
was dismissed on Wednesday evening.
Earlier: Having admitted to three
counts of spying on opposition training sessions this season,
Southampton were expelled from the Championship playoff final by an
independent disciplinary commission on Tuesday.
As a consequence Hull City will face Middlesbrough at Wembley on Saturday
(3.30pm)
for a place in the Premier League alongside Coventry City and Ipswich Town. They have also been deducted four
points next season.
Update:
Loan lads
Travis Hernes (Groningen):
Friday saw Groningen's Eredivisie season end with a failure to
secure a place in next season's Conference League.
A 0-2 defeat by Ajax in the one-off playoff semi-final saw Travis
play 67 minutes in right midfield, substituted with his team
trailing 0-2, which is how it ended.
Matt Targett (Middlesbrough):
Hull City (n) Championship playoff Final, Saturday at the neutral
venue of Wembley Stadium (3.30pm KO).
Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville):
Celta Vigo (a) La Liga, Saturday.
Seville go into their last game of the season sitting 13th, three
points and five places clear of the relegation zone - mathematically
still in danger, but realistically
safe.
Although there's no provision in the loan deal, it's claimed by
Spanish media outlets that Seville will seek to sign the goalkeeper
permanently if they remain in La Liga.
Antonio Cordero (Cadiz)
Leganes (h) La Liga 2, Sunday.
With two games left, Cadiz sit fourth bottom of the table - three
points ahead of third bottom side Huesca.
Leganes are one place and three points ahead of them but with a
vastly superior goal difference.
Trevan Sanusi (Lorient):
Leganes (h)
Ligue 1, Sunday.
Update:
Leazes Terrace latest

From NUFC, Tuesday:
Newcastle United has completed the purchase of a significant
portion of the historic Leazes Terrace building next to St.
James' Park (for a claimed £25m).
The acquisition of a substantial majority of the Grade I
listed structure includes its northern, southern and western
elevations – including all areas facing the stadium.
It also includes most of its eastern elevation, with a small
block of private residences remaining in this part of the building.
This strategic purchase is part of the club's long-term
planning as it continues to assess all credible and feasible options
for the future of its home stadium.
It provides Newcastle United with greater flexibility and
ensures any future decisions support the club's ambitions, as well
as its responsibilities to the local community and the city of
Newcastle upon Tyne.
The club recognises the building’s historic and architectural
significance and is committed to its preservation.
There are no plans to change the current use of Leazes
Terrace, which is currently let for student accommodation, and the
club will retain the building’s existing property management
operator.
The investment to purchase Leazes Terrace does not impact the
club's football trading position.
This will doubtless fuel speculation that a
redeveloped SJP including an enlarged East Stand could be in the
offing, as opposed to a new stadium built elsewhere.
As stated in the press release though, it's only a part purchase and
the building retains Grade 1 listed status, which remains a
significant barrier to redevelopment regardless of who owns it.
It may be more realistic to see this in the context of the land
acquisition around Strawberry Place; a strategic move
future-proofing an area bordering SJP for PIF, regardless of whether
the football club remain there in the future.

now
NUFC confirm that the season ticket waiting list for
next season is now open, with a minimum of 250 available.
Entry to the waiting list is restricted to members, who can
sign up until Sun 31.05.2026.
A ballot will then take place with entrants placed in priority
groups according to criteria set by the club. Ballot winners can
then purchase season tickets from Wed 10.06.2026.
While the purchase of a 2026/27 membership isn't required to join
the waiting list, anyone who doesn't win this ballot would need to
continue paying for membership in order to maintain their place in
the queue for future ST releases.
While the minimum figure of 250 for 2026/27 is set, there's no
mention of how many STs will be offered thereafter.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a
ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.
The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division usually get two hours head start.
NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log
on and complete your purchase.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a
reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.
Only those within the new loyalty point total are
eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already
closed.
PL away ticket prices will remain unchanged at £30 for both 2026/27 and

Born Or Died:
1881 Colin Veitch born,
Heaton.
(1899-1926)

Invited for a trial by Newcastle in September 1896 after facing them in a
Northumberland Senior Cup tie for local side Rutherford, Colin Veitch signed
amateur forms in 1899 and turned professional soon afterwards.
Debuting in a 0-1 home defeat to Wolves in October of that year, it took three
seasons for the half back to become a regular in the side that finished fourth
in 1904.
Then heralded an unprecedented period of success for the club and Colin
featured in three League Championships and four runners-up finishes, plus five
FA Cup final appearances (seven, including replays).
Captaining United to their 1910 success in the latter competition, Veitch was
capped six times by England but found himself overlooked for selection after
becoming involved in the Players Union.
Veitch’s final United game was at home to Everton in September 1914, and he
served in the Royal Artillery as a 2nd Lieutenant.
Later returning as trainer and coaching United’s juniors, Veitch became
Bradford City manager in 1926 after controversially being given notice to quit
Gallowgate.
Reporting on United’s fortunes for the Chronicle upon his return, he was
banned from home games during 1929 after criticising the club in print.
One of the most significant figures in the club's history, Veitch was also one
of the founders of the Professional Footballers’ Association.
Involved in the establishment of the People’s Theatre in 1911, his interest
in the arts extended to writing and composition.
Colin passed away in the Swiss town of Berne, where he had gone to convalesce
from pneumonia in August 1938.
Publishing his obituary, The Guardian said:
"One of the finest footballers in Britain. Veitch's name was
synonymous with honesty and good fellowship."

Thanks to the efforts of the Heaton History Group, a commemorative plaque was
unveiled on Veitch's former house in 2013.
He was also selected as one of the club legends to be immortalised in banner
form by the Gallowgate Flags group in 2016.

1901
Roddie MacKenzie born,
Inverness, Scotland. (1922-35)

Signed from
Inverness Clachnacuddin for £100 in September 1922 after
previous service for rivals Thistle, right half Roddie
Mackenzie was initially brought to SJP on a month's trial.
Debuting for the senior side in 1-0 home win against
Huddersfield Town in April 1923, the tough tackler was a
mainstay of United's side for a decade, playing his part
in the 1927 First Division Championship success and 1932
FA Cup Final victory.
Losing his place following Newcastle's relegation in 1934,
Roddie played on for Gateshead and had a short spell at
Reading.

1931
George Lackenby born, Newcastle.
(1950-56)

Full back
who graduated from Newcastle's junior side and made his
league debut in a 1-2 defeat at Spurs in December 1951.
George
however found himself restricted to occasional starts for
the first team due to the consistency of Bobby Cowell and
moved on to Exeter City in 1956 in a £1,500 deal.
Later appearing in the colours of Carlisle United,
Gateshead, Hartlepool United and Ashington, George died in
2004.

1956
Dave McKellar born, Ardrossan,
Scotland. (1986)

Goalkeeper
loaned by Newcastle from Hibernian to provide cover for
the injured Martin Thomas in February 1986.
Dave began his career as an apprentice with Ipswich Town
under Bobby Robson in 1973 and had loan spells at both
Colchester and Peterborough.
However, the Scottish youth international suffered from
homesickness and returned to his native Scotland in 1976,
turning out for Adrossan Winton Rovers.
Tempted back to England with Derby County in 1978,
McKellar later played for Brentford, and Hong Kong side
Happy Valley.
Joining Carlisle United in 1982, Dave was in goal two
years later as Newcastle beaten them 5-1 at St.James' Park
to end the Cumbrians' own promotion hopes.
Reunited with former Carlisle team mate Tommy Craig when
he became Hibernian manager in 1985, McKellar however
failed to dislodge first choice Alan Rough.
Becoming a free agent in the summer of 1986 after
Newcastle declined to offer him a deal, Dave joined
Hamilton Academical.
He featured for the Accies in a momentous 1-0 win at
Rangers in 1987, when future Magpie miscreant Albert Craig
allegedly blew his nose on an Ibrox corner flag....
Returning to Brunton Park (initially on loan from
Dunfermline) in 1988, McKellar later moved to Kilmarnock,
finally ending up at Rangers, as cover for Andy Gorman.
Later working in child protection in Scotland, Dave turned
down the job of goalkeeping coach offered by Walter Smith during
his time in charge at Everton.

1959 Alan
Brown born,
Easington.
(1981-82)

A product of
the mackem's junior system, striker Alan Brown scored
twice against Newcastle during a League Cup tie in
September 1979 - and then netted the winning spot kick in
a penalty shootout.
Falling out of favour at Roker Park during the 1981/82
season, United took him on loan in an attempt to boost
their forward options, Alan Shoulder and Bobbby Shinton
both struggling for fitness and Imre Varadi left to
shoulder the goalscoring burden.
Brown quickly gelled with the equally fleet -footed Varadi
and the duo inspired fine home wins over Charlton and
Luton in successive games during November 1981.
Netted his first Newcastle goal in a 4-1 rout of the
Addicks, Brown then grabbed two against the Hatters before
leaving the field through injury - United winning 3-2.
Missing a midweek defeat at Orient, Brown then featured in
draws against Grimsby Town and Blackburn Rovers without
adding to his goal tally.
Expectations were high that a permanent deal would be
concluded, but Brown then returned to the mackem amid
United claims of a back problem that he denied.
Meanwhile, questions were raised about our ability to meet
his £100K asking price.
David Mills then appeared on loan from West Bromwich
Albion in early 1982 and Brown ended up at Shrewsbury Town
in a part- exchange deal with Ian Atkins.
There certainly seemed very little wrong with him on his
next appearance at SJP, scoring the winner for the Shrews
in our opening game of the 1983/84 season.
In fairness, Newcastle's claim of an injury problem looked
more authentic when Brown left Gay Meadow soon after and
barely played for his next club Doncaster Rovers before
retiring in 1986 - aged just 27.
Brown later worked as a prison officer at Durham, while
son Chris also played for the mackems and Doncaster
Rovers.
However, his off-field exploits - including shooting
people with a ball-bearing gun and appearing in a sex tape
were rather more memorable than his football.

1968
Paul Moran born, Enfield.
(1991)

Alleged striker who came through the ranks at Spurs and made his first debut
for the Cockerels during the 1986/87 season.
Failing to become a regular starter at White Hart Lane, Moran went out on loan
during the 1988/89 season to Portsmouth and had a spell at Leicester City a
year later.
His Magpies career consisted of one erratic outing home against Wolves in
February 1991 - after which his loan was terminated.
Completely missing his kick when an early chance fell to him, claims later
emerged that he'd spent the previous evening sampling Tyneside nightlife with
fellow Spurs player, Paul Gascoigne.
After a brief loan spell at Third Division Southend United, Moran somehow
ended up back in favour at Spurs and managed a handful of (scoreless) Premier
League appearances in 1992/93 and 1993/94.
Handed a free transfer in the summer of 1994, Moran signed for Peterborough
United but failed to score in 11 appearances and left London Road the
following summer.
He then played for non-league Enfield, Kingsbury Town, Hertford, Hendon, East
Thurrock United, Borehamwood and Potters Bar Town - acting as player/coach at
the latter until 2005.
Moran then reportedly became a decorator in Enfield, worked for the Press
Association and appeared for the Spurs Veterans XI.

2012 Some self-fulfilling prophecies from Alan Pardew
about season 2012/13:
"I’m hoping
that I will educate our fans for next season. If they
think we can finish fifth with a European campaign and the
finances we’ve got, it’s impossible.
"I honestly believe that you need to be a bit more
open with the fans. The problem some managers have is
they’re not open enough.
"This year,
I’m sure we’ll say something like, ‘We’re looking
for a top-eight finish, hopefully attack one of the cups
and have a great run in Europe.
"I wouldn’t say we couldn’t challenge for the top
six if we got knocked out of Europe. Then we wouldn’t
have those extra 13 games."
As it turned out, 14 games in
Europe saw us battling relegation until the penultimate
game of the league season. Just as well we bombed out of
the other cups at the first hurdle....
