2026/27:
Shootout loss despite
Mag Ewen's best stops

Newcastle  1  Racing Strasbourg  1
(Strasbourg win 2-3 on pens)

Newcastle concluded their pre-season programme on Sunday by playing out a draw with their Ligue 1 visitors - before losing the eventful penalty shootout that followed.

Will Osula met Jacob Murphy's cross on 38 minutes to shoot the blue-clad Magpies ahead; the Dane also twice denied by fellow countryman Filip Jorgensen in the Strasbourg goal.

Making seven substitutions during the second half hydration break, newly-arrived Gessime Yassine then immediately fired past Ewen Jaouen in the Leazes End goal after Jacob Ramsey surrendered possession outside his own area.

With no further scoring, the game went to penalties, Jaouen acrobatically denying Giovanni Reyna and Mateo Del Blanco. Less memorably, Osula blasted high over the crossbar before Ramsey emulated him with a similarly wild effort.

Sean Neave and Bazoumana Toure both netted, but Aladji Bamba's kick struck the post, ensuring that visiting sides completed a clean sweep of away victories over the weekend after Bayer Leverkusen and Inter Women.

Following six pre-season losses, Strasbourg coach Hugo Oliveira saw his side avoid defeat for the first time since taking over, but faces the possibility of losing more players from the squad before Friday's opener against Marseille.

Although both contributed to this defeat, Osula and Ramsey were United's best two performers overall. The striker took up attacking positions and managed on goal, even if his accuracy was variable. The midfielder meanwhile looked strong and deserving of a starting berth next week.

Of the others, the contribution of Murphy suggests that his race here isn't quite run yet, while both Dan Burn and Fabian Schar managed 45 minute outings without mishap.

As Mason Miley had done 24 hours earlier, Leo Shahar gave a good account of himself at right back today. Given the fitness travails of Tino Livramento however, news that a deal is close for Amar Dedic comes as a relief, even if he is the equivalent of an Emil Krafth replacement.

Without being detrimental to the efforts of the development squad players we've seen pressed into service since July, they cannot form our future as a Premier League club.

Training and travelling with the first team and the odd 20 minutes in cup ties plus a sprinkling of U21 games awaits some, but worthwhile loans are essential to gauge their potential: the likes of Shahar, Neave and Miodrag Pivas are simply marking time playing age-specific football.

And so ends a faintly traumatic series of warm-ups, ahead of what will inevitably be a season of transition. As to what we're transitioning into, your guess is as good as ours...

Dedic: deal done

Newcastle are closing in on their sixth senior close season signing, agreeing a fee claimed to be around £30m for Benfica full back Amar Dedic.

The 23 year-old Austrian-born Bosnian international flew from Lisbon to Tyneside on Sunday ahead of his medical on Monday, having already made three competitive appearances so far this season.

Assuming there are no hitches, this will be the third time that Dedic has played for Matthias Jaissle, after previous link-ups at Austrian sides Liefering and RB Salzburg.

He'll become the first Bosnian international to represent the Magpies and the second Austrian-born player to play for the club in the Premier League after Valentino Lazaro.

The most recent of Dedic's 31 caps came at this summer's World Cup Finals, starting against Canada, Switzerland and the USA on the right hand side of a back four or five.

He also began in last season's Champions League meeting with Benfica at Gallowgate in the right back role.

PS: News from Germany that Newcastle remain in transfer negotiations over central midfielder Joao Palhinha.

The 31 year-old Portuguese international spent two years with Fulham from 2022, returning to the Premier League last season when loaned out to Spurs.

The Gateshead FC Supporters Society are raffling off a football signed by the Newcastle United team when the two sides met at the International Stadium last month.

All funds raised go to support The Tynesiders and tickets are sold in multiples of £5 - see online here for more details.

The draw will be made this Saturday, August 22nd.

2026/27:
Toothless Toon fail
to earn their stripes

Newcastle  1  Bayer 04 Leverkusen  2

A performance as indistinct as the stripes on the new home shirt saw Newcastle lose to last season's Champions League rivals at a subdued St. James' Park on Saturday afternoon.

It was an inauspicious opening for new manager Matthias Jaissle whose beginning on Barrack Road was as quiet as his team's showing; falling behind twice to the visitors and then failing to find a late leveller that would force penalties.

Searching for any positives from the day is tough, with a strong line-up looking decidedly weak and the Bundesliga visitors ahead within the opening minute of play.

Ibrahim Maza's curling shot from the edge of the box beat Lukas Hornicek easily after 47 seconds, finding the middle of the Gallowgate net after the Algerian international was given far too much time to line up his effort.

The Magpies came close to equalising when right back Mason Miley found space and chipped the ball to Yoane Wissa who couldn't direct a volley past his former Brentford colleague, Mark Flekken.

Wissa then played in Harvey Barnes but his cross from the left was intercepted by Flekken, beaten in all three of his previous visits to Tyneside with the Bees.

An unpopular hydration break saw Newcastle swap their home shirts for the lilac third kit, but that failed to inspire the wearers who created very little as the half progressed.

The change of shirt was necessary to correct a colour clash
between the all white reverse of the home kit and the siimilarly white Leverkusen strip; referee and Toon fan Michael Oliver having failed to spot it before the game.

That shirt swap only brought a marginal improvement in visibility however; it's arguable whether the hosts would have benefited from changing into the blue kit instead.

With a minute left of the first period Anthony Elanga's left wing corner was nodded back across goal from the far post by captain Malick Thiaw, dropping inside the upright.

It was a rare moment that inspired a modest cheer, Jaissle's side leaving the field soon after to some polite applause from a crowd just under 40,000.

Lewis Miley's first involvement of pre-season ended at that point, prompting the introduction of Rory Finneran; the young midfielder's mistake corrected with a crisp tackle.

Wissa broke forward in the 57th minute and played in Nick Woltemade but a tame shot from the German was easily saved - an ineffectual contribution indicative of his day.

The visitors made a series of substitutions and dominated possession in the latter stages, unsurprisingly regaining the lead when Victor Boniface waltzed into the box and tucked the ball past Hornicek with concerning ease.

Sean Neave was introduced in the 86th minute and caused some problems, but it was Barnes who volleyed over from close range in the final minute.

Hornicek the saved from Patrik Schick in added time while a late free-kick was easily collected at the other end beore Oliver blew for full-time.

The ground emptied quickly as Bayer received their trinket for winning the game as fans and coaching staff turned their thoughts to the visit of Liverpool in eight days.

It would be remarkable though if the Strasbourg game on Sunday provided some immediate solutions as the start of the Premier League ominously looms large.

Rather than the old "more minutes in the legs" adage, the Howe-era habit of concluding pre-season with two games on successive days this time round has served to highlight the lack of choice in key positions his successor faces.

The predicted arrival of Benfica's Amar Dedic would at least add some experience at right back, where the unproven Mason Miley and Leo Shahar are currently in the frame as Lewis Miley and Tino Livramento strive for fitness.

As for the rest, Jaissle is discovering what many present here today were only too aware of already; that we're at best half-cooked and currently lacking the key ingredients for survival, never mind success.

Team: Hornicek, M.Miley (Pivas 80), Hall, Botman, Thiaw, Steur, L.Miley (Finneran 46), Barnes, Elanga, Woltemade (Neave 86), Wissa.

Crowd:
39,059 including around 40 travelling fans, who were allocated a section of the North East corner, as the entire Level 7 remained closed.

Apart from a few words of welcome on the screens - a second screen now in the Strawberry Corner and a third at the south end of the Milburn - there was no formal introduction of Jaissle, presumably at his request.

Matthias Jaissle said:

On the team selection:

"We needed to split. First of all, because it doesn’t make sense that the the lads play two games in a row.

The most important thing now in the last friendlies that you see everyone over 90 minutes and there are different approaches.

"Some of them, they could use one more training day, especially the guys who returned later or came back from an injury.

"So there are many aspects to consider, and again, it has nothing to do with a starting eleven or not.”

On the home shirt change:

"Honestly, I was a bit surprised when the kick-off was done because it was so, so close to each other, the two shirts.

"It was then smart to use the first break, the hydration break, to change it because probably as well from the stands, from your perspective
(the media), it was not easy to distinguish between the two teams.”

On transfers:

"As I mentioned in the press conference previously, and also in interviews, that club knows exactly the needs, and this is here is not the right place to talk about the positions and names.

"Everyone is involved in the club, in the management and there will be some changes (to the squad) for sure.

"It's important that there will be something done in the transfer market. I think everyone is aligned on that."

On Mason Miley having to come off with cramp:

"This is the attitude we need. Really suffering until the tank is empty."

On his first home game:

"I was so happy to see the atmosphere right now so I can't even imagine what it will look like against Liverpool when the stadium is full and we get the whole support.

"That will be the message. We need to stick together. With these challenges now, this transitional moment, we need the fans together with the players and the staff."

Stats:

Lewis Miley and younger brother Mason played in the same senior Newcastle side for the first time. Lewis had previously shared a pitch for the Magpies with elder sibling, Jamie.

The Newcastle line-up included four players who started last season's Champions League meeting with Leverkusen in Germany: messrs Hall, Thiaw, Barnes & Woltemade.

Leverkusen fielded six players who started both games.

Although in Leverkusen's squad, England international Jarell Quansah and Argentinean international Exequiel Palacios didn't feature, amid transfer interest from Arsenal and Ipswich Town respectively. New signing Facundo Medina - another Argentinean international - was also omitted.

This is the fifth successive season that Newcastle have rounded off pre-season with a home double header.

Newcastle U18s  3  Derby County U18s  1

United's youngsters began their U18 Premier League season with victory at Little Benton on Saturday.

Newcastle trailed at the break after a 28th minute shot from Euan Griffiths struck the crossbar and bounced down before it was bundled into goalkeeper Roman Dowell's net.

The hosts made a change before half time, former West Ham youngster Kyle Healy-Matthews coming on for his debut.

The second half opened up in broadly similar fashion to the first; Newcastle seeing plenty of the ball but their final passes lacking quality.

That changed just when Muawiya Ghanem's low cross in the 59th minute was met by Alfie Hutchison, who directed a left foot shot into the corner of the goal to make it 1-1.

Six minutes later United were ahead, after Alfie Seldon broke into the left side of the Derby area, regaining possession from a deflection and side-footing home.

Chris Moore's side then sealed victory two minutes from the end of normal time, as Sam Alabi's corner kick was finished by substitute Theo Benjamin - his first goal at this level.

Team: Dowell, Patterson (Healy-Matthews 39), Goodbrand (Skelton 81) Alabi, Old, Patterson, Ghanem (Ndiweni 74), Koussou (Afumuzor 73), Hutchison, Robinson (Benjamin 82), Seldon.

Their last visit to SJP ended in a 2-1 Premier League home win behind closed doors in December 2020. Joelinton and Jacob Murphy remain from the 14 players used that day.

Liverpool (a) info

One of our readers notes that Newcastle's Premier League visit to Anfield this season takes place at some point on or around Saturday April 10th 2027 - the day that the Grand National horse race will be staged at nearby Aintree.

While the days of moving Liverpool and Everton home games to avoid clashes are over, transport and hotels etc. across merseyside will be adversely affected that weekend.

Liverpool versus Newcastle should be confirmed as part of the live TV amendments on or around February 22nd - with the added complication of falling between the first and second legs of the Champions League Quarter-finals, were the Reds to reach the last eight.

Internationals:
Magpie is a young Lion

Newcastle youngster Charlie Robinson has been named in the England U16 squad for two friendlies later this month.

The attacker is selected for games against Italy on Tuesday 25th August and Thursday 27th August in Florence.

2026/27:
U18 PL Cup draw

Newcastle's U18s will once again participate in the U18 Premier League Cup this season, drawn in Group G with Derby County, Fulham and Spurs.

Match dates are awaited.

2026/27:
U21s break new ground

A new season brings another mixture of first team grounds, training facilities and borrowed venues for Newcastle's U21 side - and some uncharted territory.

Three new stadia appear so far: a Premier League Cup meeting with Peterborough United at the Zeeco Stadium of Stamford in November and a PL2 game against Chelsea in March at the Kings Meadow in Kingston upon Thames.

The third then sees United head to the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham to play West Bromwich Albion in PL2 during April - a venue known more for athletics and now the home of the Baggies' women's side.

There's some duplication of away venues this season; United's second string facing two trips to the homes of Boreham Wood, Solihull and York where'll they face the nominal home side and also the temporary occupants.

That scenario sees them visit York twice within a week during September for games against City and Leeds.

The U21s kick off by making a National League Cup visit to Tamworth on Tuesday, before successive PL2 home games on the following two Mondays against Spurs and Fulham.

Saturday sees United U18s begin their league campaign, facing Derby County in a 1pm kick-off at Little Benton.

That's the first of three home games on successive Saturdays, with Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers on Tyneside the following two weekends.

As ever, all venues and schedules are subject to change, often at minimal notice - as we've found to our cost....

ST holders have 24 hours to apply for away tickets, 24 hours to determine success, then 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.

Only those within the new loyalty point total are eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

PL away ticket prices are unchanged at £30 for the 2026/27 and 2027/28 seasons.

Balderstone(51)

Newcastle fans had their first sight of new signing Colin Taylor following his arrival from Walsall - and he lived up to his Cannonball nickname with a well-struck treble.

Does anyone have a copy of the match programme/teamsheet for this game that they can scan or sell us please?

1968 Burnley (a)

After 1-1 draws at home to West Ham and at Sheffield Wednesday, an own goal from John McNamee saw United leave Turf Moor empty-handed.

Our reserve side meanwhile beat their Burnley counterparts 2-1 at SJP, thanks to goals from Eric Ross and Keith Dyson.

And the N's junior side also picked up two points, winning 2-0 at Bradford Park Avenue with Longstaff and Artie Lumdson on target.

1974 Coventry City (h)

Having ended the previous season with a winless eight game run that included the FA Cup Final defeat by Liverpool, United made a winning start to the new campaign.

There were league debuts for both Mickey Burns and Glenn Keeley, Manager Joe Harvey commenting that, "there is so much talent in this club we have to do something." It was to be his final season in charge.

1990 Dunfermline Athletic (Scotland) (a) 0-0 (0-0)
Friendly

The Magpies motored to the Kingdom of Fife to appear in a testimonial for Norrie McCathy at East End Park.

Norrie was the Pars' longest serving player and captained the team through the late '80s &  early '90s.

Famously (in Dunfermline) when the Pars topped the SPL in 1989, it was the front page headline on the Daily Record. Their second story was that the Berlin Wall had come down the same day...

(thanks to Ian "Fifer" Ferguson)

Team: Wright, Ranson (Bradshaw), Sweeney, Aitken, Kristensen, Scott, Simpson (Clarke), O'Brien, Quinn (Robinson), McGhee, Askew.

League debut for Alan Shearer, who scored with a header that was unfortunately and inexplicably disallowed.

At the other end Everton were awarded a ludicrous penalty when Duncan Ferguson pulled Steve Watson to the ground before dramatically falling over him. David Unsworth netted it while Gary Speed got the other.

2000 The saga of Duncan Ferguson's return to Goodison finally came to an end. United refused to compensate the Scot for unpaid bonuses and Bobby berated Ferguson's agent after the deal was done, following a week of on-off-on-off headlines.

Gary Speed and Olivier Bernard had Alan Shearer to thank for digging them out of their respective holes, his brace salvaging a point after his colleagues' blunders let in future Magpies Mark Viduka and Alan Smith.

Lee Bowyer debuted for Newcastle on his return to Elland Road, while David Batty appeared from the bench for the home side and was applauded by both sets of fans.

2005 In the wake of the furore following our Highbury season opener, the FA opted to reschedule their appointments in order to avoid sending buffoon Barry Knight to SJP.

Instead, Dermot Gallacher was selected to officiate Newcastle's home game against West Ham - controversially dismissing Paul Konchesky for what looked like a decent challenge on Jermaine Jenas, whom Steve Bennett had sent off at Arsenal.

2008 Manchester United (a) 1-1 (1-1)
Premier League
P1, 1pt, 11th/20
Martins(22)
Fletcher(24)

The Manc muppets aired their "Cheer up Kevin Keegan" nonsense but needn't have bothered as KK beamed his way out of Old Trafford with a deserved point.

But perhaps it could have been all three....

With the home side already missing some big names, they lost Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs in the second half and our best chance in decades to beat the Red Devils on their own patch suddenly presented itself.

Jonas Gutierrez had an outstanding debut, Fabricio Coloccini steadied the defence and with Danny Guthrie industrious in midfield, our lads steadily grew in confidence.

Obafemi Martins headed the visitors ahead from Guthrie's corner at the Stretford End, but within two minutes the Red Devils were level, Newcastle temporarily a man short as Steven Taylor received treatment.

Despite the optimism of this result, it was ill-fortune of that nature - plus countless incidents of self-harm - that contributed to our demotion the following May.

What was to be the final season of Alan Pardew's time at SJP began with a decent display against the Premier League Champions but a 17th successive failure to beat the Citizens.

Six players debuted for United; Remy Cabella, Jack Colback, Daryl Janmaat and Emmanuel Riviere in started and Rolando Aarons and Ayoze Perez came off the bench

It proved to be third time lucky for United, following defeats by Fulham and Huddersfield Town.

Rafa Benitez saw three of his summer signings find the net, Isaac Hayden, Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle's brace helping United to their first Championship victory since 2010.

Shelvey(90+3)
Pukki(32,63,75)

United made it two defeats out of two with a poor showing at Carrow Road as Teemu Pukki helped himself to his first City hat-trick.

Jonjo Shelvey hit a late consolation for United but it was way too little and way too late for Steve Bruce's side who were soundly beaten by the manager's former club.

There was a debut for Swedish defender Emil Krafth, at right back.

A smart strike from Joelinton in first half added time gave Newcastle a winning start to the season - despite having to play with ten men for over an hour.

A clash between Fabian Schar and Ben Brereton-Diaz that began when the visiting striker shoved the defender ended with the pair locking horns before the Saint fell to the floor clutching his face.

Referee Craig Pawson issued Schar with a red card that a VAR check upheld; the Saint escaping with a booking
