Update:
Magpies
near Jaouen deal

U pdate:
It's claimed that Jaouen will arrive on Tyneside later on Monday
ahead of his medical.
Earlier: Media reports in France suggest that
Newcastle have reached agreement with Ligue 2 side Reims to sign
their goalkeeper, Ewen Jaouen.
The 20 year-old Parisian is a French U21 international and made 34
appearances last season as Reims finished sixth, two points shy of a
promotion playoff spot.
A four year contract at a cost of £24m including bonuses is speculated upon, but as
yet, neither club have commented on the story.
Update:
Ashley:
twist
in the (re)tail?
From Sky News - from shouting at shops to buying them?
Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group is weighing up a £500m bid for the Metrocentre in Gateshead, underlining the retail tycoon's burgeoning
appetite to own some of Britain’s most popular shopping
destinations.
Sky News has learnt that Frasers is among the parties considering
making offers for the north-east’s biggest shopping centre, which
boasted 16 million visitors last year.
Once part of Intu, the retail property group which collapsed into
administration in 2020 after amassing £4.5bn in debt, the
Metrocentre remains the UK’s biggest regional shopping hub outside
London.
Majority-owned by Mr Ashley but now run by his son-in-law,
Michael Murray, the company - which owns Sports Direct and a broad
portfolio of other retail brands - has a market valuation of £3.3bn.
If Frasers did buy the Metrocentre, it would mark a return on a
greater scale to the region where Mr Ashley had a 14-year stint as
the owner of Newcastle United.
Frasers Group declined to comment.
Update: NUST
survey:
ends today
The annual Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST)
member survey is now online, including questions about
ticket sales and distribution, ID checks and the upcoming
Murrayfield kickabout amongst other topics.
Members should have received an email with a link to the
survey - note that the closing date is Monday, June 8th
at Midnight and there's an extra incentive to respond, in
the shape of a prize draw for a signed NUFC shirt.
NB: the survey is restricted to NUST members only, but
renewals and new memberships are available for just £1.

Unlikely lads:
Dyer tribe
Following the installation of Lee Clark at Hartlepool United and Rob
Elliot at Carlisle United, a third National League club have turned
to a former Magpie as their manager.
That club is Southend United, who have confirmed that Kieron Dyer
will take charge of first team affairs at Roots Hall next season. He
most recently coached at fellow National League side Chesterfield.

Gerry & Sewell

winner

Returning to
Newcastle's Theatre Royal this week is "Gerry & Sewell", a tale of two
Toon fans searching for their holy grail of season tickets, despite being
totally skint....
Based on Jonathan Tulloch's book "The Season Ticket" and
previously filmed as "Purely Belter", seven performances take
place from Tuesday June 9th to
Saturday June 13th, with matinees on both the Thursday and
Saturday.

We had
two tickets to give away for opening night on June 9th and asked
which Blaydon building hosted Blaydon Races lyricist Geordie
Ridley's show on that day in 1862.
It was the Mechanics' Hall and from the correct entries received,
two tickets will go to Paul Ross.
Update:
I got stripes

Launched on Tuesday (June 10th) in the UK, some
overseas Mags have already found Newcastle United's 2026/27 home
shirt out in the wild.

The new design has drawn comparisons with the Umbro "barcode"
shirt from the early 1990s.
Update:
Magpies miss out
Newcastle's hopes of signing Zadok
Yohanna have been dashed after Brighton and Hove Albion
confirmed they had agreed a deal for AIK's 18 year-old Nigerian
winger.
The Magpies were reported* to have matched the Swedish club's £21.8m
valuation for the player along with Brighton in recent days - but
Saturday saw Fabian Hurzeler's side announce his capture on a five
year contract.
* it's disputed by other outlets whether a bid for Yohanna actually
materialised from SJP.
Update:

2026/27:
Everton (n) confirmed

Newcastle are to visit Edinburgh's Murrayfield
Stadium as part of their pre-season programme, facing
Everton.
The Magpies and Toffees meet on
Wednesday August 12th at 5.15pm with all ticket sales via Ticketmaster.
As NUFC aren't selling tickets direct, there's no loyalty point
requirement and no point will be issued to attendees.
Prices ranged from
£35 to £75 for adults plus booking fees of up to £13 - an
incredible uplift in cost compared to the £25 tickets at Celtic last
July.
While outrageous, the pricing is little shock to anyone attending
the Premier League Summer Series of games featuring Newcastle in the
USA during 2023.
That was also handled by Ticketmaster, with the cheapest ticket for
United's games against Aston Villa (in Philadelphia) and Chelsea (in
Atlanta) £49 when including booking fees.
There has been an inevitable backlash from fans unhappy at paying
the equivalent of Champions League ticket prices, the line "from
£35" factually correct but grossly misleading.
Although not administering this game (but presumably approving the
ticket prices), Newcastle's opportunity to make amends will arise in
the form of the home friendlies.
A sensible pricing policy for those games would seem like a small
but necessary action after the Lothian shakedown.
The teatime kick-off does mean that it's possible to get back to
London Kings Cross via train post-match - which may be handy, given
the price of hotels in Edinburgh due to the annual Fringe Festival
taking place at the same time.
We're uncertain whether this really is a "dry run" to test the
viability of staging future NUFC games at Murrayfield, were SJP to
be unavailable due to reconstruction.
Regarding the rest of pre-season, the players will report back
around
July 13th and include a training camp in the Spanish resort of La Manga.
A pair of home friendlies over the weekend of August 15th/16th are
anticipated, with Serie A side AS Roma and French League Strasbourg
among rumoured opponents.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a
ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.
The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division usually get two hours head start.
NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log
on and complete your purchase.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a
reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.
Only those within the new loyalty point total are
eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already
closed.
PL away ticket prices will remain unchanged at £30 for both 2026/27 and
2027/28.

|
Born Or Died:
1906 Death of Johnny Campbell, 36. (1897-98)

1933 Archie Simpson born
Dundee, Scotland) (1955-56)
Right
back signed on a free transfer from Dundee in June 1955, Magpies Supremo Stan
Seymour predicting that Simpson would take over the position that had been
filled by Bobby Cowell.
A Scottish schoolboy international, Archie had missed most of the previous
season due to illness and joined United after his completing national service
with the Black Watch Regiment - captaining their football team as a centre
half.
A scoring debut for the reserves in a 4-0 Central League win over Preston
North End came when playing as an inside forward but he failed to make the
transition to the first team and was released in May 1956.
Following fellow Magpie Joe Harvey to Barrow, Archie spent three seasons with
the Holker Street side in the Third Division North, re-christened to Division
Four.
Returning to Scotland with Brechin City in 1959, Simpson found employment at
the Astral electronics firm and Timex, both in his native Dundee.
Working as a school caretaker until 1998, Archie suffered from Parkinson's
disease and was also diagnosed with dementia in 2012. He died in August 2019
aged 86.
1929 Tommy Dixon born, Newcastle
(194?-51)
Centre forward Tommy came through the ranks at Gallowgate
without making it into the first team squad, moving on to West Ham during
1951.
Scoring a respectable 25 goals in 44 league and cup appearances, the 1953/54
campaign saw him finished top scorer for the Hammers with 19 goals.
Joining third tier Reading for a £2,700 fee in March 1955,
Dixon netted against Newcastle when they made a friendly visit to Elm Park in
October 1956.
Later serving Brighton & Hove Albion, Workington and Barrow, Tommy
succeeded Lawrie McMenemy as Bishop Auckland manager in 1967 but lasted less
than a year at Kingsway.
Tommy's death was reported during February 2014, when he was living in the
Watford area.
1944 David Craig born, Comber, Northern Ireland. (1960-78)
Arriving on Tyneside as a 16 year old (after an unsuccessful
trial at Scunthorpe United), right back David was a part of Newcastle's
1962 FA Youth Cup winning side.
Making his senior bow in a League Cup tie at Bournemouth in
late 1963, David remained an integral part of the first team at SJP until a
2-1 home loss to Arsenal in November 1977 saw him make his final appearance.
That loyalty left him in sixth position in the club's record
appearance makers, although he dropped down a place in May 2007, when Shay
Given surpassed his total.
2009 saw David joining his former United colleagues in
celebrations to mark the 40th anniversary of the Fairs Cup win.
Craig played in nine of the 12 games in that campaign - including both legs of
the final - a hamstring pull at home to Zaragoza game seeing him replaced by
John Craggs against Setubal and at Ibrox versus Rangers.
Also appearing in the Fairs Cup campaigns of the following two seasons, injury
caused this one club man to miss our unsuccessful trips to Wembley in 1974
(dislocated shoulder) and 1976 (medial ligament).
Remaining at SJP to feature in the UEFA Cup during the 1977/78
season, David also won 25 full caps for Northern Ireland between 1967 and 1974
- a good number of them in the left back berth.
Awarded a testimonial match in 1975, Craig played on for Blyth Spartans after
leaving United and also turned out for Dunston Mechanics (later Dunston Fed /
UTS).
Remaining on Tyneside, David became a care worker after previous stints as a
milkman and newsagent.
1974 Peter Cormack born, Southport. (1992-94)
Peter began his career with Hutcheson Vale in the Edinburgh
area before joining Meadowbank Thistle in 1990, although he barely featured
for their first team.
July 1992 then saw Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan add the son of one-time
Anfield colleague Peter Cormack (senior) to his squad at a cost of £10,000.
Given the number 27 squad number before Philippe Albert's arrival, Cormack
failed to make a senior appearance for the Magpies, but was on the bench for
an Anglo Italian Cup tie away to Bari in December 1992.
Following unsuccessful trials with both St. Johnstone and Brighton and Hove
Albion, Peter joined Greenock Morton in August 1994 - where his father was
assistant manager.
Later moves took him on to Raith Rovers, Stirling Albion, Clydebank, Ross
County, Stenhousemuir, Albion Rovers, Bo'ness United and finally Arbroath -
retiring in 2006.
Working for the Royal Bank of Scotland, he was recruited by the
Edinburgh-based financial advisers Towry during 2012.
Cormack also worked as a match summariser for a Scottish radio station.

Controversy as United claimed to be the victims of a phantom goal, netted by
Albert Stubbins but then refused by wearside whistler Harry Nattrass.
The incident came with City 4-2 ahead on 74 minutes, Stubbins appearing
to have beaten former Magpie goalkeeper Bill McPhillips and found the
corner of the net.
Nattrass however disagreed and restarted play with a goal kick.
Oblivious to that, The
Journal reported on a 4-4 draw and observed that City were fortunate to
leave on level terms against a home side including nine juniors.
A similar report made The Yorkshire Post.
Members of the British Expeditionary Force recently repatriated from
Dunkirk were granted free admission to the game.
Team: R.Gray, Richardson,
D.Graham, W.Hart, J.Yeats, A.Price, W.Thompson, Stubbins, Taylor,

While a more youthful side were hosting the
Bantams on Tyneside, a senior XI were triumphant at Elland Road.
Both sides represented Newcastle in the competition to fulfil the fixtures.
The same B.E.F. offer applied at his game, with more than half the crowd
claiming free admission as a consequence.
Team: McVay, Craig, Ancell,
Dodgson, Denmark, Bradley, Moses, A.Gilholme, Cairns, Blackburn,
Pearson.
1964 Newcastle beat off a host of clubs
to sign forward Neil Armstrong after he netted 90 goals
for school and county in the previous season - the latter in tandem with future
Magpie Colin Suggett.
Representatives of both Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Wolves, West Bromwich
Albion, Birmingham City, Leicester City, Bury, West Ham United and Preston North
End visited the Armstrong family home in Washington, Magpies scout
Temple Lisle securing the 15 year-old.
Turning down a professional contract at Gallowgate, Neil later appeared for
Usworth Juniors and Bishop Auckland while attending Gateshead Grammar School.
Studying in the Midlands, he played for Loughborough Colleges, Rugby Town, Hinckley Athletic and AP Leamington.
2000 A couple of rumours were reported
in the press: Didier Domi deserting to PSG and Gary Speed leaving for Manchester
City. The former would come to pass.
2001 Gary Speed's red card in the final
game of the season against Aston Villa was rescinded. Our old 'friend' Barry
Knight had sent off both Speed and Villa's Ian Taylor for a very minor scuffle
at SJP.
2003 Peter Beardsley put in one of his
finest performances in a black and white shirt at the tender age of 42. Pedro strapped
on his shooting boots to pound the mackems and smoggies with a staggering
nine-goal salvo at the Telewest Arena on Tyneside.
Newcastle won the Northern Masters indoor football tournament in some style,
beating Boro 5-2 to clinch the title after thumping the mackems 7-1. Beardsley
hit a hat-trick in the final and five against the mackems, adding to one in an
earlier game against Boro.
2005 The Republic of Ireland's World Cup
qualifying campaign got back on track with a 2-0 win in the Faroe Islands.
Shay Given and Stephen
Carr played the full game in Tórshavn as the Irish prevailed 2-0. Newcastle's
Andy O'Brien was sidelined after attempts failed to overturn his unwarranted
dismissal against Israel the previous weekend.
2006 Midfielder Lee
Bowyer returned to West Ham for an undisclosed fee after three chequered years
on Tyneside.
2009 Eight days after Mike Ashley announced his
intention to sell via The Sunday Times, the club put out the following
statement:
"The Board of Newcastle United can today confirm that the Club is for
sale at the price of £100m.
Interested parties should contact Newcastle United at [email protected] (or Keith
Harris at Seymour Pierce) for further details.
The Club will not be making any further comment at the present time."

NB: Not that Keith Harris
2010 United boss Chris Hughton refuted speculation linking Andy Carroll
with a move to Chelsea:
"I can say 100% that I have not heard
