FA Cup :
Justice served
despite Kavanagh QC*
Aston Villa 1
Newcastle 3

Newcastle reached the Fifth Round of the FA Cup for a third
successive season on Saturday evening, defeating both Premier League
rivals and the match officials at Villa Park.
The absence of VAR was keenly felt by Eddie Howe's side, who felt
aggrieved by a quartet of dubious calls by referee Chris Kavanagh
and his linesmen - in addition to the clear and obvious decision to
red-card Villa 'keeper Marco Bizot.
Backed by over 6,500 fans, the green-clad Magpies made six changes
from the side victorious at Spurs: messrs Pope, Botman, Willock,
Gordon, Elanga and Guimaraes making way for Ramsdale, Hall,
Woltemade, Osula, Murphy and Tonali.
The first contentious decision came after Villa's 14th minute
opener, Tammy Abraham collecting a Douglas Luiz free kick chipped
over the Newcastle wall in the box and firing in.
The only doubt appeared to be whether two or three home players
including the goalscorer were offside, but the flag remained down
and the goal was given.
United's sense of injustice steadily grew during a first half that
saw fouls on Lewis Hall and Harvey Barnes
in the box
waved away and a studs-up challenge by Digne on Murphy that VAR
would have surely upgraded from yellow to red.
Even the hapless Kavanagh couldn't avoid reaching into his correct
pocket during first half added time however, after Bizot came way
out of his box to intercept a United attack and denied a goalscoring
opportunity by felling Murphy.
That would be the turning point in a tie that United hadn't
established themselves in when both sides had 11 players; Osula
leading the line ineffectively and neither he nor his colleagues
calling the unreliable Bizot into serious action.
A further glaring error from the officials began the sequence of
events that led to United's 63rd minute leveller; a clear handball
by Digne in his own box incredibly punished by a free kick outside
rather than the penalty and second yellow that would surely have
followed any remote review.
That free-kick led to Sandro Tonali's shot deflecting off Luiz and
flying past replacement goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Substitute Anthony Gordon then fired just wide of the target as
United sought to press home their numerical advantage, before
Tonali's sweetly-struck second began to empty sizeable sections of
the home stands. Sob on the Holte!
Without a club goal to his name in nine months before tonight, the
Italian midfielder took just 13 minutes to double his tally with an
unstoppable 25 yard strike - a timely contribution given the loss of
Bruno Guimaraes to injury.
Late
Villa pressure led to several corners before Newcastle broke away to
hit a third; Anthony Elanga galloping upfield, Joe Willock pinching the ball in the box and birthday boy Nick Woltemade
netting despite the efforts of Pau Torres - who got his own
come-uppance after earlier wrestling Dan Burn to the ground in a
headlock as a corner kick was taken.
Victory sees United's relentless midweek/weekend schedule
extend still further: Champions League success against Qarabag would
make 2025/26 our busiest top flight season in terms of competitive
games played since 1968/69.
That didn't make the slightest difference to those on or off the
field at full time though, with celebrations loud and long.
The
Magpies will learn their next opponents when the Fifth Round draw is staged ahead of the Macclesfield versus
Brentford Fourth Round tie on Monday night.
Those ties are played over the weekend of March 7th.
Full match report to follow.

Eddie Howe said:
"There is a lot to
take in. The overriding feeling is that we are really pleased to be
through. It was great character from the players to come back from a
losing position.
"It is tough to win here at the best of times but being 1-0 down - I
think we did well when we conceded that we didn't allow the goal and
the decision that allowed it to affect us and destabilise our
performance.
"I thought we were unfortunate to go in 1-0 down.
"It felt like it was one of
those games that every decision was going against us. Of course it
isn't intentional, but it was just one of those things that you have
to accept.
"Our players did well to control their emotions and not get
themselves sent off for something. It did feel strange. The penalty
for handball, I could see it from where I was.
"It did feel like it was one of those days where it wasn't going to
happen. It's not easy to play against 10 v 11 to break down a
stubborn defensive unit, and I think we did that really well in the
second half."
On the refereeing controversies:
"The game moves at a very quick speed
and I think the referees and officials are making honest decisions
but they've got them wrong on more than one occasion against us and
unfortunately for us it was sort of building up negatively for us.
"But I thought the players did really
well to control their emotions, to stay calm, not let it affect our
performance negatively and that's not easy to do in that situation
where you feel aggrieved."
"I think there's an argument to say that, because when VAR is there,
there's always a, 'Well, I won't give that, but let's check it'.
"And I think then your decision-making maybe isn't as sharp as it
may normally have to be, so maybe there's a difference there.
"I'm always torn on VAR. I said this many
times because I still love the emotion, even tonight, when a goal is
given and you don't see a flag or a referee, it's a goal, and no
one's going to take it away from you.
"That joy that you get in that moment, I
still really love and VAR takes it away. But then on the other side,
I was wishing there was VAR on the first goal against us, and
probably throughout that game.
"I think it does give accurate
results. It does make the game more concise in terms of
decision-making and those moments, you have to respect that they're
worth their weight in gold, especially for us today, when we're on
the wrong side of it - so I'm still very much torn on it.
"The officials don't make any
(incorrect) decision on purpose. It's what they think at the
time. But without VAR, I thought there was a lot of errors."
On Sandro Tonali ending his goal drought:
"Really pleasing. In Bruno's (Guimaraes) absence we know we
needed everyone to give more and I thought Sandro led by example in
that respect.
(Nick) Woltemade's contribution in midfield was really good
today and Jacob Ramsey against his former club. So I thought there
was some really strong performances that we are going to have to
carry forward into future games."
On when Bruno Guimaraes will
return:
"Around the next international break.
"The March international break that he will be back. He has a period
of time now where he will have to work hard on his hamstring to make
sure he is fully fit but we are looking at that period of time."
On Yoane Wissa's absence:
"Just a little knock for Yoane in training yesterday. I don't think
it's serious and don't think he will be away too long."
On whether he'd like an FA Cup
run:
"It would be amazing. We want to go as far as we can. We always take
the cups seriously. There is a a massive prize at stake and the
competition will really hot up in the latter stages. There are no
easy draws for us."
Stats:
Sandro Tonali's eighth and ninth Newcastle goals were his first
club strikes since netting against Chelsea in the Premier League at
Gallowgate in May 2025.
Nick Woltemade found the net for the first time in 15 League and
Cup appearances since scoring against Chelsea in the Premier League
at Gallowgate in December 2025.
The German now has 10 strikes to his name as a Magpie, with
today's effort completing a full house of Premier League, League
Cup, Champions League and FA Cup goals.
Nick joins current colleagues Dan Burn, Anthony Gordon, Joelinton,
Fabian Schar and Joe Willock in that club.

Goals from Kacey Wooster and Sammy Pinnington were
enough to gave the
young Magpies their first win in three games on Saturday.
Ahead through Wooster's 32nd minute effort at Stoke's Clayton Wood
training facility, the scorer led a Newcastle charge upfield eight
minutes after the interval that ended with Pinnington claiming a
third league goal this season.
The Potters pulled one back through Pedro Nzau in the 65th minute
but United held on for victory; visiting goalkeeper George Mair
denying Finley Nixon deep into added time.

Newcastle's U21s failed to build on their fine 4-3 win away to Aston
Villa on Friday night, losing both a man and a goal in the closing
stages of their PL2 encounter with Arsenal at the home of National
League side Boreham Wood.
Caretaker coach Robbie Stockdale took charge of the side once again
and the game was scoreless until last week's hat-trick hero Matheos
Ferreira was shown a straight red card by referee Emily Heaslip in
the 80th minute.
The ten-man Magpies then were denied a point in the last minute of added
time when visiting goalkeeper Aidan Harris saved a penalty from Andre Harriman-Annous,
only for the Arsenal striker to react quickest and nod in the rebound.
A closely-contested first half saw Harris
make a fine stop with his feet to deny Brando Bailey-Joseph, while
United's Michael Mills shot against the upright six minutes after
his half time arrival from the bench.
Then came Ferreira's dismissal for an over the
top challenge on Callan Hamill on the touchline.
United held out until the sixth minute of added time when Logan Watts brought down Harriman-Annous inside the box and
he got up to convert at the second attempt.
The defeat saw United drop to 24th place in the 29-team league
with 12 points from 13 games.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log
on and complete your purchase regardless.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered
to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Born Or Died:
1926 Frank Houghton
born, Preston.
(1948-53)
Signed from Ballymena United, Frank
had begun his playing career at hometown club Preston North End during World
War II, joining Derry City in 1944 during a posting to Northern Ireland with
the RAF.
The Magpies paid £6,000 for him in January 1948 and he's perhaps best remembered
for scoring twice against against
Sheffield Wednesday at SJP in April of that year.
With the scores locked at 2-2 and barely 10 minutes remaining, Frank's two quick
goals virtually assured us of promotion back to Division One. However, in scoring the second, he broke an arm
and injured a leg.
Injuries and illness were to badly affect Frank's playing career and he
contracted TB as well as breaking a leg.
Moving on to play for Exeter City, Frank became their trainer and later working as a bookmaker in
the Devon area. He passed away in 1994.

1955 Death
of
Andy Aitken, 77.
(1895-1906)
1985 Ross Gardner born,
South Shields.
(2000-03)
England youth international
midfielder who linked up with Newcastle as a nine year old, having played youth
football with Whitburn and Cleadon and appeared for Washington and
Chester-le-Street boys.
Playing for United's U17 and U19 sides, Ross moved up to the reserves and
scored his first goal at that level in April 2003 against the smoggies at the
Riverside.
His last competitive appearance was a Northumberland Senior
Cup Final win over Whitley Bay at SJP that season, as behind the scenes, moves
were afoot.
Gardner and fellow reserve midfielder James Beaumont registered complaints with
the FA over their treatment at United's Academy, which were heard by an FA
tribunal.
The FA duly found in favour of NUFC and the duo were released, both joining
Nottingham Forest ahead of the 2003/04 season.
November 2003 saw Ross appear as a sub for Forest as they beat Wimbledon 6-0 at
the City Ground - the first of 31 games for Forest, while he also appeared for
Port Vale on loan, later signing a permanent deal.
Released by the Valiants in 2007, Gardner trained as a gas installation engineer
while playing non-league football for Ilkeston Town, Eastwood Town
(twice), Shildon Town
(twice) and West Auckland Town.
NB: A different Ross Gardner (born in 1991) played for non-league
sides including Billingham Synthonia, Norton & Stockton Ancients, Whitby
Town, Guisborough Town....and West Auckland.

The outcome and venue of this midweek kickabout remain to be
confirmed, with some reports claiming a half-time of 5-0 and a final score of
9-1.
Listed as being played at the
Holy Mount Field in Bedlington, that also looks to be known as
Hollymount Field, which would make it close to or on the site of the current
home of Bedlington Terriers.
But, it was definitely played on a Wednesday!

The first-ever meeting of these two sides saw Division Three (South)
Albion fail to complete a trio of top flight upsets, having knocked out
First Division sides Grimsby Town and Portsmouth previously.
Newcastle wore their change kit of white shirts and black shorts and
gave a debut to Joe Richardson, at right back.
Sam Weaver sent his 63rd minute penalty kick wide of the goal before
Gallacher completed his treble.
Brighton supporter Edwin Budgen reportedly "walked the 340 miles from
the south coast to cheer on his team" and at least had the
satisfaction of being among the largest crowd to have ever watched his
side at that time.

occasion.
Two of Arsenal's goals came from Ray Bowden, who was
deputising for Ted Drake. Bowden would join the

The visitors would win the replay at Highbury 3-0 and go on to lift the Cup.

Saints included former Magpie Jimmy Harrower and new signing Ken Brownlee from Third Lanark opened the scoring.
Ollie Burton then equalised with a

Game two of Kevin Keegan's managerial reign, and the celebrations in
the away end when David Kelly netted were as nothing
compared to the unrestrained venom directed at Blackburn's David
Speedie.
The diminutive striker hit all three Rovers goals and seemed to have a
death wish, celebrating scoring the second two in front of the away fans
in the Darwen End, some of whom sought to join him on the field....
The rest of the Toon contingent contented themselves with
choruses of "We've all sh*gged your wife, Speedie, Speedie..."

1995 SJP old boy David Kelly scored a 27th
minute goal for Ireland against England at Lansdowne Road, Dublin -
prompting unrest among travelling fans that
caused the game to be abandoned.
The friendly was expunged from the records, but the England players
later received international caps, including debutant future Magpie
Warren Barton.
1997 Former Newcastle midfielder Nicky Papavasiliou netted
for Cyprus in a 2-3 friendly loss to Poland in Ayia Napa.
2000
A Magpies XI
visited Croft Park for a game that marked Blyth's centenary.
Temuri Ketsbaia (16), Silvio Maric (40) and Stuart Elliott (58) netted in a 3-0 victory in front of 2,086
fans.
The visitors included a number of players transfer-listed
by Bobby Robson: Paul Talbot, Steve Caldwell, Des Hamilton, Maric,
Stephen Glass, James Coppinger, Elliott and Jon Karelse.
2000 Over at SJP, 3,104 fans saw a 2-1 FA
Youth Cup Fifth Round replay victory for Newcastle over their mackem
foes.
Gary Caldwell's own goal gave the visitors the lead, only for substitute Kevin Gall to level.
With extra time looming, Caldwell thumped home a 93rd minute
winner to set up a Sixth Round trip to the smoggies.
