Premier League:
Closer

Manchester City  2  Newcastle  1

Newcastle left the Etihad Stadium pointless but not goalless as they came close to ending a run of 16 straight league defeats there in the Manchester rain on Saturday night.

Trailing 1-2 at the interval, a committed second half display was probably worthy of a point but despite enjoying the bulk of possession against the title hopefuls, a lack of clear chances meant that an equaliser eluded Eddie Howe's side.

Nico O'Reilly scored either side of Lewis Hall's deflected shot as City moved to within two points of leaders Arsenal, but the hosts laboured to victory here against United in stark contrast to the usual one-sided home success.

City went ahead on 14 minutes when Omar Marmoush ran unopposed to the edge of the area and played in O'Reilly to fire past Nick Pope, although the 'keeper got a hand to it.

But eight minutes later a Sandro Tonali corner was partially cleared to Hall and his shot hit Rayan Ait-Nouri and flew past Gianluigi Donnarumma, ending a seven game wait for the travelling Mags to celebrate a PL goal at this ground.

The joy division of the Toon Army had just five minutes of parity to savour however, before Erling Haaland's cross from the right allowed O'Reilly to nod in a simple second, with United's defence looking shaky once again.

The unprecedented scenario of a second Newcastle goal in a PL game here was threatened in the 42nd minute, as an excellent Dan Burn header from Tonali's free-kick ended up in the back of the City net.

However that was ruled out for offside against the scorer, despite replays showing that Burn had been shoved into an offside position by Rodri.

Bernardo Silva was then lucky to escape a second yellow card for a body check on Burn minutes after his first at the start of the second half, before Hall hit a free-kick wide.

Eddie Howe made just one change to the side that won in Baku, Jacob Ramsey in for Harvey Barnes who came off the bench with Joelinton after an hour.

United's best chance of the second half came when a quick Joelinton free-kick should have seen Anthony Elanga release Anthony Gordon, but he delayed and played it the other way and the opportunity was lost.

Pope made vital stops from both Haaland and substitute Phil Foden in added time before heading forward for a corner that he almost met at the near post.

Once that was cleared though, referee Thomas Bramall blew for full-time much to the relief of the home side and fans - the unknown pleasures of an away point here eluding the travelling support yet again.

Given what we've routinely endured at this venue over the years though, it was certainly no disgrace to be pushing for a last gasp equaliser.

That's four games played against City now, with one left - an FA Cup tie at Gallowgate in a fortnight. Having already beaten Pep's lot at SJP in the Premier League this season, there's no reason to believe we cannot repeat the feat.

Once again the Etihad wasn't sold out, which will hardly come as a shock when adult ticket prices of £91 were set.

After the game Eddie Howe said:

"A good effort physically. It's been a tough run of fixtures. I want the players to empty, to give everything in the pursuit of winning.

"I thought we played with a good plan. The two goals we didn't defend well enough, two errors. But I'm pleased with the effort.

"The league table isn't what we wanted it to be. In part, it's not based on tonight. We're heading in the right direction. That's the most important thing because it means long-term we're going to be fine.

"We're trying to win every game, not trying to over-think games. We don't want to lose momentum. The feeling has been strong, togetherness is strong, you see that in the second half.

"Overall, the players are all out, doing the best for this football club."

On the performance of the officials:

"
I don't think we were on the right end of the decisions today, but I don't want to go down that road.

"I'm not one of those managers that wants to continually criticise officials, but I thought, again, it was one that we probably didn't get the right end of the decisions.”

Kieran Trippier reached 150 games in all competitions for United (126 starts).

Jacob Murphy made his 250th appearance in all competitions for Newcastle (143 starts).

Lewis Hall ended United's Premier League goal famine at the Etihad Stadium, scoring 622 minutes after fellow ull back DeAndre Yedlin netted at the same end in September 2018.

That was Hall's second Newcastle PL goal, following one at Manchester United in May 2024. His other Newcastle strike also came at Old Trafford, in the Carabao Cup back in November 2023.

City slicker again

Newcastle U18s  3  Manchester City U18s

A pulsating encounter at Little Benton on Saturday saw Newcastle's youngsters race into an early three goal lead, only for the Premier League North leaders to reply with five unanswered goals of their own to claim all three points.

Magpies captain Matthew Taylor began the sequence of events that led to his side's ninth minute opener when hitting a post - Jayden Koussou eventually heading in after the corner kick that followed.

Taylor then teed up Kacey Wooster to hammer home an unstoppable 17th minute shot before a rerun of United's opener put them 3-0 up four minutes later: Taylor firing against the goal frame and Henry Johnson converting a header following another corner.

City began their comeback when Finlay Gorman's long-range strike caught home custodian Roman Dowell off-guard on 34 minutes - and it was 3-2 11 minutes later when Karim Cassim's speculative shot snuck in.

Visiting forward Teddie Lamb rattled the crossbar with a header in first half added time, but wasn't to be denied - making it 3-3 in the opening minute of the second period.

Newcastle twice came close to regaining the lead on 51 minutes; Ethan Ndiweni's shot saved by Max Hudson and Koussou's follow-up blocked by a defender near the line.

The sides continued to trade blows and after City's Dexter Oliver struck the United goal frame, Dowell denied Cassim.

City's pressure paid dividends on 73 minutes when they got their noses in front for the first time - Lamb clipping his effort over the advancing goalkeeper for 3-4.

The defending champions then sealed victory with four minutes of normal time remaining; Oliver keeping his balance and calmly slotting home City's fifth.

Team: Dowell, Johnson, Durrant, Epia (Cogdon 88), Moran, Taylor (Bloomer 73), Tika-Lemba (Hutchison 82), Koussou (Morgan 65), Ndiweni, Pinnington, Wooster.

U21s:
Friday night delight

Newcastle U21s  3  Fulham U21s  0

Newcastle U21s returned to PL2 action on Friday, registering a deserved victory over the Cottagers at Whitley Park that included a rare goal for 'keeper Aidan Harris.

Fresh from his senior debut in Baku on Wednesday, Sean Neave opened the scoring with a 12th minute penalty, getting up to convert after being impeded by the byline.

The black and whites created several half-chances but couldn't add to their lead before half time, Scott Bailey coming close and Neave sending a first-time shot wide.

Harris made noteworthy stops either side of his side's goal to deny Fulham's Alfie White, while  both Neave and Leo Shahar were replaced at the break, ahead of expected first team bench duty on Saturday.

United doubled their lead two minutes after the break in bizarre circumstances, Aidan Harris finding the net!

Coming out of his box to intercept a long clearance, the United custodian launched the ball upfield first-time and it soared over the head of opposite number Alexander Borto and into the Fulham net (possibly wind assisted).

In the 71st minute it was 3-0 when Anthony Munda played in substitute Michael Mills who confidently fired in his first goal for the U21s, rounding off a memorable week in which he turned 17 and signed his first professional contract.

Victory gave interim coach Robbie Stockdale seven points from a possible 12 since succeeding Adam Lawrence last month. The preceding 10 PL2 games yielded just eight points.

Team: Harris, Shahar (M.Miley 46), Watts, Pivas, Thompson, Finneran, Fitzgerald (Palmer 77), Bailey, Neave (Mills 46), Munda, Seung-soo (Moran 87).

Update:
Shirt claim

From The Times, this is said to be a good approximation of Newcastle's 2026/27 home shirt design by adidas, although the final design is yet to be divulged (or leaked).

Sacrificing the clubs trademark black and white stripes for those of differing widths is sure to divide opinion, as did Umbro's attempt at something similar from 1990 to 1993 - often referred to in derogatory terms as the barcode shirt.

Although the Premier League introduced rules preventing "material changes" to club crests or recognised home shirt colours without fan consultation, this design looks to fall within acceptable limits as it's still black and white stripes.

PS: It's anticipated that a new front of shirt sponsor will replace SELA next season, while a redesigned club badge won't be seen until the 2026/27 campaign.

The draw means that United and City are set to play each other five times this season and will meet in both domestic cup competitions for the second time in three seasons.

The only real shock is that we're not heading back to the bloody Etihad for the third time in barely a month....

This takes the total number of meetings between Eddie Howe and Pep Guardiola in the last three seasons to 11 - something that is unprecedented in the modern era.

A home tie means that Newcastle will play four times in succession at SJP for the second time in 2026. That would become five in a row if the Magpies eliminated Qarabag to reach the last 16 of the Champions League, facing either Barcelona or Chelsea at SJP on March 10th or 11th.

On This Day in History
22nd February

Born Or Died:

1950 Tim Augar born, Oxford.
(1968)

Goalkeeper Tim made his competitive senior debut for non-league Oxford City aged just 15 in 1965 and was briefly on the books of Arsenal around that time.

Augar came to the attention of Newcastle and after featuring at junior level, made his reserve team debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford in May 1968.

However he was reportedly homesick and left Tyneside when joining Banbury United during December 1968, going on trial with Bristol Rovers the following March.

Augar joined Margate in July 1969, but his appearances were restricted by injury and he'd departed by the end of the year.

1970 then saw Tim relocate to Australia, where he played for South Melbourne Hellas. He later returned to England.

1969 Neil Shaka Hislop born, Hackney.
(1995-98)

One of the more interesting ex-Mags, Shaka enjoyed a varied 15-year career in England which ended with a FA Cup loser's medal for West Ham (a brief trial with Crystal Palace coming to nothing).

Standing six foot four, Shaka was brought up in Diego Martin, Trinidad where one of his boyhood pals was famed West Indian batsman Brian Lara.

Hislop moved to the USA to study and gained an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from Howard University, Washington DC - part of which saw him work for a spell at NASA.

Playing college "soccer" for the Bisons, Shaka was signed up by the Baltimore Blast indoor footy team and spotted by a Reading scout when playing in England against Aston Villa.

He established himself at Elm Park and caught the eye of Kevin Keegan and Newcastle who paid £1.575m for him after failing to secure a work permit for their first-choice acquisition, Brad Friedel.

And having seen him put pen to paper, KK hoyed Shaka in a car and headed off to Edinburgh to see his new colleagues play a pre-season game at Hearts.

Failing to become first choice, Hislop left in 1998 on a free transfer, joining West Ham. Shortly before leaving, he made one England U21 appearance, against Switzerland.

2002 saw Shaka follow Harry Redknapp to Portsmouth and he remained at Fratton Park until he was released in 2005 - whereupon he returned to Upton Park.

Despite an U21 appearance for England in a friendly, Shaka was capped by Trinidad & Tobago in 1999 and between the posts at the 2006 World Cup.

While at SJP, Hislop was joined Show Racism the Red Card and was honoured by the PFA with an award in 2005.

His final club proved to be MLS side FC Dallas in 2006, injury truncating his US return after a year and seeing him retire before returning as a media pundit.

Shaka is currently the President of the Football Players Association of Trinidad and Tobago, a position that has brought him into further conflict with the local FA.

July 2023 saw him collapse live on air during an ESPN TV broadcast of a match in California. Thankfully he made a full recovery but shared news of a prostate cancer diagnosis in December 2025.

PS: Shaka's younger brother Kona had a brief trial with United and played for Hartlepool, Livingston and Blyth Spartans.

He later worked for Paul Stretford's Proactive management agency and on occasion acted as driver to a certain W.Rooney....

1975 Alun Armstrong born, Gateshead.
(1990-94)

Striker who failed to make a first team debut for Newcastle despite showing good goalscoring form at junior and reserve level.

Alun left SJP in the summer of 1994 for a small fee and after 200 appearances for Stockport County made a £1.6m switch to Boro four years later.

However, he failed to establish himself on Teesside and a loan spell at Huddersfield Town then followed, before he was sold to Ipswich Town for £500K.

After another loan spell, this time at Bradford City, Alun returned to the region with Darlington after an unsuccessful trial with Bristol City.

Brief stints at Rushden and Diamonds and Doncaster Rovers followed before a return to the Quakers, where he remained for the bulk of the 2006/07 season.

Next stop was Unibond side Newcastle Blue Star, although that was to prove a fleeting encounter; Star boss Tommy Cassidy releasing him days after Armstrong was red-carded in a game against Gateshead.

Involved in a
local property business, Alun later joined the coaching staff at the Boro Academy and also ran soccer schools in Durham, Shildon and Weardale.

A first foray into football management came in September 2016, at Northern Premier League Blyth Spartans, taking them to the National League play-off quarter-finals where they lost to Altrincham on penalties.

Armstrong moved on to manage Darlington in May 2019, remaining there until sacked in September 2023, with the Quakers bottom of National League North.

It was a similar story at Gateshead, being appointed manager in June 2025 but by January Heed were bottom of the National League and he stepped aside for ex-Mag Rob Elliot.

Armstrong's 100+ senior career goals include strikes home and away for the Tractor Boys against Inter Milan in the 2001/02 UEFA Cup.

1982 Pedro Miguel Ferreira Dimas born, Vila Franca de Xira, Portugal (2000-02)

Midfielder who moved to United on a free transfer from Porto in September 2000 and made his reserve debut in a 1-3 loss to Everton at Widnes the following month.

A Portuguese U18 international, Pedro ended his first season with a brace in an 11-0 romp over non-league Ponteland United in the Northumberland Senior Cup.

And he got the following campaign off to a good start with a hat trick in a pre-season victory away at Durham City.

What proved to be his only competitive second string goal game against Everton at Kingston Park in October 2001 however - a succession of injuries affecting Pedro's availability over the following months.

Nearing the end of his contract, Dimas went on trial at Scottish side Livingston, French outfit Montpelier and Sporting Lisbon back in his native Portugal.

Joining Portuguese side Lousada, Pedro made an unexpected return to England ahead of the 2003/04 season with a brief trial stint at Hartlepool United.

Reinventing himself as a left back, he later returned to his homeland and played for both Louletano and Farense before moving on to Espinho in 2006.

1997 Will Hoare
born, Croydon (2016)

Midfielder who first joined Crystal Palace as an eight year old and graduated through their Academy to U21 level by the 2014/15 season - picking up a Scotland U16 cap en route.

January 2016 saw Hoare arrive on trial at Newcastle, debuting for the Magpies in a U21 League game against Aston Villa.

However, he returned from whence he came after one further appearance in an U21 Cup tie against Everton days later.

Released by the Eagles that summer, he moved into the non-league game with Bromley, Leatherhead, Guildford, East Grinstead Town and Horsham.

January 2019 then brought a return to the professional game for Will, agreeing a two year deal with Swedish side Skelleftea FF.

Back in the UK in January 2022 and joining Ramsgate, a further stint with Skelleftea saw him in a player/coach role.

Returning to Sevenoaks later that year, Hoare began working for performance analysis company Photon Sports.

Victory was achieved without the considerable presence of Hughie Gallacher, who had netted three times in the FA Cup a week earlier but was called up for to play for Scotland against Ireland.

1930 The absent Gallacher netted twice for Scotland in a 3-1 Home International victory staged at Celtic Park in Glasgow.

This would be United's sole visit to Spotland until the FA Cup Third Round draw took them back there in 2020.

1947 Newcastle's Division Two meeting with Bradford Park Avenue was postponed after heavy snowfall on Tyneside.

The pitch was initially passed fit to play on, but following a further heavy shower which obscured the markings, the referee deemed it unplayable just over an hour before kickoff, with fans waiting outside for the gates to open.

1950 St. James' Park hosted an England 'B' International, with 43,068 fans watching a 1-0 win over Holland - the highest crowd for an England home game at this level.

Nat Lofthouse of Bolton Wanderers scored the only goal of the game in the second half for England, who included former Magpie Len Shackleton in their line-up, by then a firm favourite on wearside.

This game is notable as being the first in the Football League to be played under floodlights, although power supply problems meant that it came close to being postponed.

The diesel for the backup generator was frozen, meaning the teams had to get changed by candlelight and with minutes to spare a blown fuse was located and the lights came back on - the match eventually kicking off eight minutes late.

Nearly four weeks after a 1-1 draw on Tyneside, the replay went ahead on a Thursday night at the tenth time of asking.

Top-flight Wolves made it to the Fifth Round thanks to a goal from mackem-born Norman Bell but United left Molineux aggrieved at not being awarded a 68th minute penalty kick.

Referee John Homewood spoke to his linesman for some time after Peter Withe was fouled in the area - only to then restart proceedings with a drop ball outside the area.

The hosts were ripped apart by a rampant Magpies; the fleet-footed Kieron Dyer to the fore - and indulging in his smoking gun salute.

Bobby Robson was in upbeat mood after the game - perhaps also due to having added another player to his wish list, a half time replacement for Leeds named James Milner.
