Newcastle play the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie at SJP tonight against the La Liga leaders.

It's an 8pm kick-off, live on Amazon Prime.

Match tickets for those on the Champions League ticket scheme were emailed out as separate downloads.

FAO anyone unable to download their ticket to an iphone, NUFC say that the option to download tickets from their ticket account is live. Anyone struggling with that is recommended to log off and back on to that account.

There's an overnight road closure of the Tyne Bridge, but it won't commence until 11.30pm on Tuesday.

Hat sellers Football Bobbles will have a stall outside the Trent House pub from 5pm. Card payments accepted.

Team: Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley and Fabian Schar are out, but Joelinton, Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy all participated in training on Monday.

Jacob Ramsey is available following a domestic suspension.

Bookings for Dan Burn or Joelinton tonight would see them suspended for the second leg at the Nou Camp.

Coral rate this tie as follows:

NUFC win 15/8
The draw 11/4
FCB win 5/4

Champions League:
Barcelona (a) points drop

Following the original ticket sale with a cut-off of109 points and a second window reduced to 92, a further sales period for Barcelona (a) saw those with 85+ invited to purchase.

That ended at 9am today (Tuesday). Further updates tbc.

Unlike previous sales of this nature, NUFC don't contact qualifying applicants, they just log on and select seats.

No increase on the 2,215 allocation is confirmed as yet, but the home club announced on Tuesday that their capacity has been extended to 62,652 with immediate effect.

Tickets are £45.

Premier League :
Arsenal (a) update

The chances of Newcastle's Premier League visit to the Emirates Stadium going ahead as rescheduled on Sat 25.04.2026 with a 5.30pm kick-off look to have reduced following Monday's FA Cup Quarter-final draw.

The Gunners landed a last eight visit to Championship club Southampton on or around Sat 04.04.2026, with victory in that ensuring a Semi-final at Wembley for Mikel Arteta's side rather than hosting United on Sat 25.04.2026.

Were that to happen, an alternative midweek date would be needed for our game, notwithstanding possible Champions League involvement for both or either clubs as follows:

CLQF1: Tue 07.04.2026 or Wed 08.04.2026
CLQF2: Tue 14.04.2026 or Wed 15.04.2026
CLSF1: Tue 28.04.2026 or Wed 29.04.2026
CLSF2: Tue 05.05.2026 or Wed 06.05.2026

PS: Monday's FA Cup Fifth Round win for West Ham means that their PL visit to SJP on Sun 17.05.2026 remains tbc - given that the Cup Final takes place on Sat 16.05.2026.

Update:

Seat selection opens Wed 11.03.2026, 4pm 28+ points

Allocation: 2,687

As now confirmed by Newcastle, our Premier League visit to Selhurst Park remains subject to alteration from the advertised 3pm KO on Sat 11.04.2026.

Were Palace to win their UEFA Conference League 16 tie versus AEK Larnaca on Thu 12.03.2026 / Thu 19.03.2026 they'd play a Quarter-final first leg on Thu 09.04.2026.

That would then see their PL home game against the Magpies delayed 24 hours to Sun 12.04.2026 - as has happened for Palace's game against Leeds this weekend*.

(*That's categorised as a PL displaced fixture, meaning that it's a 2pm KO, televised live on Sky Sports. Newcastle's game would be similarly categorised if moved).

In the event that Newcastle were to defeat Barcelona in the Champions League, the scheduling of a Quarter-final second leg on Tue 14.04.2026 or Wed 15.04.2026 would also be a factor in when the Palace game is played. That's because UEFA take no account of domestic fixture scheduling when deciding the day that Champions League ties are played.

Unlikely lads:
Old boy updates

From the BBC, Tuesday:

Former footballer Joey Barton and a second suspect have been charged after a man was assaulted near a golf club.

It happened on Sunday at 21:00 GMT in Fairway, near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on Merseyside.

Officers arrived at the scene and found a man with injuries to his face and ribs, Merseyside Police said.

Barton, 43, of Widnes, and Gary O'Grady, 50, of Huyton, are due to appear at Wirral Magistrates Court later after being charged with section 18 wounding with intent.

The victim is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

At a High Court hearing earlier over a libel claim involving Barton, Gervase de Wilde, representing ex-England footballer Eni Aluko, said his instructing solicitor had "received a call from a duty solicitor in a police station in Liverpool" shortly before the hearing.

Mr de Wilde told the court that Barton "was arrested yesterday and is currently being held in custody".

(Barton was seen at SJP on Saturday night).

Earlier: Former Magpie Kevin Nolan has been relieved of his duties as Northampton Town manager, following a poor run that has left the Cobblers in League One relegation zone.

Town's Director of Football Colin Calderwood - another SJP old boy - has taken interim charge at Sixfields Stadium.

Meanwhile, Jack Colback has confirmed his retirement from playing aged 36, having made just a single appearance for Leicestershire-based non leaguers Anstey Nomads.

PS: AFC Wimbledon report that their scout and ex-Newcastle defender Andy Thorn is recovering well after suffering a heart attack in February.

Fulham (a) rail update

FAO those planning to attend United's PL season-closer at Fulham by train, amended timetables are now online.

A three day line closure between York and Darlington in both directions (Sat 23.05, Sun 24.05, Mon 25.05) means that bus replacements between those two stations will run.

Unlike previous closures north of York, there don't look to be any direct services to and from Newcastle via Hartlepool.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.
2025/26 CL away tickets are €50 or less.

On This Day in History
10th March

Born Or Died:

1904 Harold Smith born, North Shields. (1925-27)

Inside left Harry was spotted by Newcastle playing for Cullercoats and moved to SJP, featuring for the club's reserve sides without breaking into the senior XI.

Joining West Ham in May 1927 along with fellow Magpies Jimmy Loughlin and George Robson, Smith's sole senior outing for the Hammers was to be a 2-1 home defeat by Manchester United in October of the same year.

By 1928 he was back in the region playing for Blyth Spartans and later for West Stanley.

1954 Keith Houghton
born, Backworth. (1970-72)

Playing alongside the likes of Irving Nattrass for Newcastle juniors, midfielder Keith made it to the reserve side but wasn't retained.

Joining the police force, he continued to play football at non-league level for North Shields and Gateshead plus the England Police team.

November 1977 found Houghton with Blyth Spartans and he would be an integral part of their famous FA Cup run that season, at times switching to a defensive role.

Representing the England Semi-Professional side during 1979, attempts by Chelsea and Peterborough United to take Keith on trial failed, but Carlisle United had more luck.

Quitting the police and moving to Brunton Park for £1,000 in January 1980, he spent two and a half seasons with the Cumbrians and ended up captain - although injuries affecting his availability and came close to ending his playing career prematurely.

Making a £25,000 switch to Lincoln City ahead of the 1983/84 season, Houghton was later employed by a civil engineering firm and also worked as a traffic warden.

1968 Pavel Srnicek
born, Ostrava, Czech Republic. (1991-98 & 2006)

Pav in 1991

One of a small number of players to win a permanent contract and become a first team regular following a trial, Pav arrived on Tyneside from Banik Ostrava in January 1991 during Jim Smith's time at the helm.

With the club for an initial month, Pav made a handful of reserve appearances, impressing enough for United to complete a permanent transfer at a cost of £350K.

Former soldier Pav had begun his playing career with army sides Dukla Tabor and Dukla Prague and was capped at U21 level by the Czech Republic.

Although signed by Smith, Srnicek's first team bow was under newly-appointed boss Ossie Ardiles, in a 1-0 home victory over Sheffield Wednesday that April.

Becoming a popular figure with fans and players alike, Pav remained at SJP and played under both Kevin Keegan and Kenny Dalglish in the following six seasons, including United's Premier League bow against Spurs at Gallowgate in August 1993.

He was also in goal as the Magpies returned to European competition in spectacular style the following season, beating Royal Antwerp by an aggregate 10-2 scoreline.

And the Czech custodian took his place in the side at SJP on October 20th 1996 for a memorable game that ended Newcastle United 5 Manchester United 0.

Pav's time in Toon drew to a close though in the 1997/98 season following the arrival of Shay Given and he had just one senior outing, at home to Blackburn Rovers when Given was away on international duty.

Confined to a non-playing substitute role thereafter, he lost out to Shaka Hislop for the bench spot at Wembley in the FA Cup Final loss that year (he had appeared for United in the 1996 Charity Shield at that venue).

Following a brief return to Banik, Pav joined Sheffield Wednesday and debuted in a 1-1 draw at SJP in November 1998 - well-received by his former supporters as he would be when facing United on two other occasions (thankfully he was an unused sub for our 8-0 beating of the Owls in September 1999).

Spells in Italy for Brescia and Cosenza were followed by further service in England at Portsmouth and West Ham and a period training with Coventry City. His next stop was a non-playing spell with Czech side FC Opava before joining Beira Mar in Portugal.

It was a case of "Pavel is a Geordie" again in October 2006 when injuries to Tim Krul, Given and Steve Harper caused then-boss Glenn Roeder to sign the free agent on a short-term deal - Pav initially thinking that contact from Harper was a wind-up!

Pav duly made his 150th league appearance for United - some nine years after the 149th - replacing Given for the last three minutes of the 3-1 home win over Spurs in December 2006.

Needless to say, his arrival was greeted by an ear-splitting roar from the Gallowgate faithful.

Playing the full 90 minutes of the next game at Bolton on Boxing Day, he stayed at the club for the rest of the season without adding to his appearance total - playing twice more for the reserves.

That saw him conclude a second spell as a Magpie, having made 190 appearances (187 starts) in all competitions.

After a short spell coaching in the North East, Srnicek returned to Ostrava before becoming Sparta Prague's goalkeeping coach in 2012.

Internationally, Srnicek won 49 caps for his country beginning with a 0-0 draw against Malta in October 1994 and concluding in November 2001 - 19 caps coming during his time at Gallowgate.

Having appeared along with his former "Entertainers" team mates in a charity match at Kingston Park in October 2011, September 2013 then saw Pav return to Gallowgate for Steve Harper's match.

2015 saw him on Tyneside for talk-ins and the publication of his autobiography.

Shortly after returning to the Czech Republic however, Srnicek collapsed on a run in Ostrava, suffering a cardiac arrest.

Hospitalised, he spent just over a week in an induced coma before brain scans confirmed he had suffered irreversible damage.

Pav's family took the unenviable decision to switch off life support systems and he died on December 29th - news of his passing prompting a flood of tributes from former Magpie colleagues and fans alike.

A genuinely good guy, gone far too soon.

Pav in 2015

2005 Ben Parkinson born, Durham
(2021-26)

Striker who made his competitive bow for Newcastle U18s against Burnley in August 2021, scoring his first goal against Derby County the following month.

The England U15 international was promoted to the club's reserve side a year later for an EFL Trophy tie at Barnsley, getting off the mark at that level against Leeds United in PL2 during February 2023.

Included in the senior squad for the USA pre-season fixtures Ben faced Chelsea in Atlanta and Brighton in Harrison, also featuring in home kickabouts against Fiorentina and Villarreal.

On the bench for Newcastle's Champions League visit to Borussia Dortmund, a debut in the Premier League followed as a substitute during a 0-2 loss at Bournemouth in November 2023, with first-choice forwards Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak both out injured.

A series of bench selections then followed without adding to his appearance tally, Ben also playing for the U19 and U21 side - and netting for the latter in a UEFA Youth League win over Inter Milan.

The 2024/25 campaign began with a further five senior friendly outings before returning to the U21s where 11 goals before Christmas made him top scorer.

Sidelined by a foot injury that thwarted hopes of a loan move, Parkinson made his comeback in a PL2 victory over Boro in March 2025, finding the net within two minutes of his arrival from the bench.

Making a permanent switch to Scottish Premier side Falkirk in January 2026, Ben hit the headlines when scoring against Hearts in the Scottish FA Cup and then netting the winning penalty in the shootout that followed.

However fitness problems soon affected his availability for the Bairns.

Faced with a free weekend due to scheduled opponents Watford being in FA Cup action, United visited Cappielow for a Thursday night kickabout against the then-SPL side.

Gazza's epic run midway through the first half was halted illegally in the box and the player got up to sweep the spot kick home.

Included in the Morton side was teenage forward Archie Gourlay and with a fortnight he'd moved to SJP on a £50K deal.

They said it couldn't happen again but for the second successive season, United fell by the odd goal in seven at Anfield with the winner coming in the last seconds.

Those present at both failed to share in the delight of Sky and the rest of the nation, while an alleged Toon fan that threw his shirt at Kenny Dalglish on the touchline as we went 0-3 down in an appalling first half, didn't seem too impressed either....

Our favourite Stockton Lardarse official (Jeff Winter) gave us a penalty that no-one else had spotted.

However, TV replays showed that Richard Gough had tugged Alan Shearer's shirt and Shearer gratefully dispatched the spot kick.

Forest's Gateshead-born winger Steve Stone then crossed for Dougie Freedman to head home within seconds of the restart.

Gough then limped off for the home side, who were reduced to ten men just five minutes into the second half, when Mathieu Louis-Jean bundled over Louis Saha.

Having struck a post from distance, United midfielder Didi Hamann then cracked a 35 yard thunderbolt that was still rising as it whizzed past Mark Crossley.

An amazing night in Athens as United scored three times against Olympiakos who had won all of their previous European games without conceding.

And for most of the game Newcastle faced just nine men with the Greeks having Grigoris Georgatos and Ieroklis Stoltidis red-carded in an eventful first half which also saw a penalty for either side.

Away fans rubbed salt into the wounds of the home support at full time by singing "Happy Birthday" on what should have been an 80th anniversary celebration for their club.

2007 The U18s kept their hopes of a FA Youth Cup final appearance just about alive, following a 2-4 home loss to Liverpool in the first leg of their semi-final.

Twice being three goals behind at SJP, United fought back in a game that was a reverse of the first team's UEFA Cup win over AZ Alkmaar game at SJP just a few days earlier.

Midfielder Charlie Barnett put the Reds ahead and returned to United on trial the following pre-season. The Magpies netted through Andy Carroll and an own goal.

2008 A 3-1 win over Blackburn Rovers at Morecambe's Christie Park gave United's reserve side back to back victories for the first time that season. Scorers were Wesley Baheng, Andy Carroll and Jonny Godsmark.

2009 United's reserves were denied what would have been a fourth consecutive league win by a late defensive lapse, as they were held 1-1 by their Hull City counterparts.

Mark Doninger had put the Magpies ahead on their first visit to the Church Road ground of non-league side North Ferriby United.
