Premier League:
Manchester City
(a)

Once more unto the Etihad, dear
friends, once more;
It's an 8pm
kick-off tonight live on TNT Sports.
Following a 2-1 win on Tyneside in the first meeting this
season, Newcastle are looking to record their first-ever PL double
over City. The last time they did so was in the 1983/84 Second
Division campaign.
In addition to our game, there's a concert at the adjacent
Co-op Live arena on Saturday night, plus Championship Cycling at the
nearby National Cycling Centre.
Those three events will inevitably increase road and tram congestion in
the area, with some local matchday parking areas not open for
football traffic.
Team: Speaking to the media on Friday, Eddie Howe
confirmed that Sven Botman was available for selection, but Yoane
Wissa and Lewis Miley aren't ready to return yet.
Tino Livramento, Bruno Guimaraes, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth
remain out.
Kieran Trippier is one appearance away from reaching 150
games in all competitions for United (125 starts).
Jacob Murphy is one appearance away from reaching 250 games
in all competitions for United (143 starts).
Although Anthony Elanga ended United's scoring famine here in the
recent Carabao Cup tie, the wait for a Premier League goal
continues. It's exactly 600 minutes since DeAndre Yedlin
netted at the Etihad in September 2018.
Coral rate this game as follows:
NUFC win 5/1
The draw 19/5
MCFC win 10/21

MCFC:
Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic and
Jeremy Doku
are out, with doubts
over Erling Haaland and Max Alleyne - although both are expected to
be named in the squad.
While Eddie Howe and his players made a 5,000 mile return journey to
Azerbaijan in midweek, Pep Guardiola's side were enjoying a free week to
prepare for our visit.
So far this season on home ground, City have won 12 times in the
Premier League, drawn 1-1 with both Chelsea and Brighton and lost
0-2 to Spurs.
They have the most potent attack (32) and meanest defence (8),
sharing the latter attribute with Arsenal.
Referee: Thomas Bramall - the Sheffield whistler returns for
his third Toon game of the season, following the 2-2 PL home draw
with Spurs and penalty FA Cup shootout triumph against Bournemouth
that followed a 3-3 draw.

U18s:
City slicker again
Newcastle U18s 3
Manchester City U18s 5
A pulsating encounter at Little Benton on Saturday saw
Newcastle's youngsters race into an early three goal lead, only for
the Premier League North leaders to reply with five unanswered goals
of their own to claim all three points.
Magpies captain Matthew Taylor began the sequence of events that led
to his side's ninth minute opener when hitting a post - Jayden
Koussou eventually heading in after the corner kick that followed.
Taylor then teed up Kacey Wooster to hammer home an unstoppable 17th
minute shot before a rerun of United's opener put them 3-0 up four
minutes later: Taylor firing against the goal frame and Henry
Johnson converting a header following another corner.
City began their comeback when Finlay Gorman's long-range strike
caught home custodian Roman Dowell off-guard on 34 minutes - and it
was 3-2 11 minutes later when Karim Cassim's speculative shot snuck
in.
Visiting forward Teddie Lamb rattled the crossbar with a header in
first half added time, but wasn't to be denied - making it 3-3 in
the opening minute of the second period.
Newcastle twice came close to regaining the lead on 51 minutes;
Ethan Ndiweni's shot saved by Max Hudson and Koussou's follow-up
blocked by a defender near the line.
The sides continued to trade blows and after City's Dexter Oliver
struck the United goal frame, Dowell denied Cassim.
City's pressure paid dividends on 73 minutes when they got their
noses in front for the first time - Lamb clipping his effort over
the advancing goalkeeper for 3-4.
The defending champions then sealed victory with four minutes of
normal time remaining; Oliver keeping his balance and calmly
slotting home City's fifth.
Team: Dowell, Johnson, Durrant, Epia (Cogdon 65), Moran,
Taylor (Bloomer 65), Tika-Lemba (Hutchison 82), Koussou (Morgan 65),
Ndiweni, Pinnington, Wooster.

Friday night delight
Newcastle U21s 3 Fulham U21s 0
Newcastle U21s returned to PL2 action on Friday, registering a
deserved victory over the Cottagers at Whitley Park that included a
rare goal for
'keeper Aidan Harris.
Fresh from his senior debut in Baku on Wednesday, Sean Neave opened the scoring
with a 12th minute penalty, getting up to convert after being impeded by the byline.
The black and whites created several half-chances but couldn't add
to their lead before half time, Scott Bailey coming close and Neave
sending a first-time shot wide.
Harris made noteworthy stops either side of his side's goal to deny
Fulham's Alfie White, while both Neave and Leo Shahar were
replaced at the break, ahead of expected first team bench duty on
Saturday.
United doubled their lead two minutes after the break in bizarre
circumstances, Aidan Harris finding the net!
Coming out of his box to intercept a long clearance, the United
custodian launched the ball upfield first-time and it soared over
the head of opposite number Alexander Borto and into the Fulham net
(possibly wind assisted).
In the 71st minute it was 3-0 when Anthony Munda played in
substitute
Michael Mills who confidently fired in his first goal for the
U21s, rounding off a memorable week in which he turned 17 and signed
his first professional contract.
Victory gave interim coach Robbie Stockdale seven points from a
possible 12 since succeeding Adam Lawrence last month. The preceding
10 PL2 games yielded just eight points.
Team: Harris, Shahar (M.Miley 46), Watts, Pivas, Thompson, Finneran,

Update :
Shirt
claim

From The Times, this is said to be a good approximation of
Newcastle's 2026/27 home shirt design by adidas, although the final
design is yet to be divulged (or leaked).
Sacrificing the clubs trademark black and white stripes for those of
differing widths is sure to divide opinion, as did Umbro's attempt
at something similar from 1990 to 1993 - often referred to in
derogatory terms as the barcode shirt.
Although the Premier League introduced rules preventing "material
changes" to club crests or recognised home shirt colours without fan
consultation, this design looks to fall within acceptable limits as
it's still black and white stripes.
PS: It's anticipated that a new front of shirt sponsor will replace
SELA next season, while a redesigned club badge won't be seen until
the 2026/27 campaign.

The draw means that United and City are set to play each other five
times this season and will meet in both domestic cup competitions
for the second time in three seasons.
The only real shock is that we're not heading back to the bloody
Etihad for the third time in barely a month....
This takes the total number of meetings between Eddie Howe and Pep
Guardiola in the last three seasons to 11 - something that is
unprecedented in the modern era.
A home tie means that Newcastle will play four times in succession
at SJP for the second time in 2026. That would become five in a row
if the Magpies eliminated Qarabag to reach the last 16 of the
Champions League, facing either Barcelona or Chelsea at SJP on March
10th or 11th.

Update:
Max at the double
Max Thompson (Ayr United):
The Magpie goalkeeper was the hero on Tuesday, saving two
penalties as the Honest Men beat St.Johnstone at Falkirk in the
Quarter-finals of the Scottish Challenge Cup.
Ayr had looked likely to progress when holding a 3-2 lead
going into the fourth minute of time added on, only for the Saints
to level after Max saved a penalty but couldn't prevent an opponent
converting the follow-up.
That sent the tie to a shootout, during which Max denied Stevie
Mallan and Matty Foulds, helping his side to a 5-4 success and a
Semi-final against Inverness Caley.
Saturday sees Ayr host Ross County in the Scottish
Championship.

Kavanagh QC*
* quickly cancelled
From the BBC, Monday:
Referee Chris Kavanagh and his assistant Nick Greenhalgh
have not been selected for a Premier League game this weekend.
The pair were heavily criticised for their decisions in the
fourth round FA Cup tie between Aston Villa and Newcastle United on
Saturday, in which there was no video assistant referee.
Referees' body Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO) bases its
selections on factors including post-match performance assessments
conducted by an independent Key Match Incidents panel, ensuring
accountability for officials.
However, despite the criticism Kavanagh is highly regarded and
in December was promoted to Uefa's elite list of referees to join
Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor.
The other assistant at Villa Park, Gary Beswick, has been
appointed to Nottingham Forest versus Liverpool on Sunday.
A slight slap on the wrists for the pair although Beswick escapes censure despite also missing the Jacob Murphy
assault by Lucas Digne which happened just feet (literally) away
from him.
Meanwhile, the root of all officiating evil, PGMO boss Howard Webb,
remains unanswerable to anyone. One of his advocates, ex-referee
Chris Foy, speaking on TalkSport claimed Webb is the hardest
working person he knows. That just makes his ineptitude all the
worse....
Meanwhile, Kavanagh joins his own group of elite referees; he, Uriah
Rennie, Steve Bennett, Brian Coddington and Trelford Mills as the
worst ever seen by Newcastle fans.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log
on and complete your purchase regardless.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered
to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Born Or Died:
1914
Norman Tapken born, Wallsend.
(1933-38)
Goalkeeper who became a Magpie at a cost of £25 when signed
from the splendidly- named Wallsend Thermal Welfare works team in May 1933.
Debuting in a 4-2 home win over Blackburn Rovers in November 1934, Tapken took
over goalkeeping duties from Micky Burns and was a regular starter until ousted
by Tom Swinburne in October 1937.
Sold to Manchester United for £850 in December 1938, within nine
months, football was suspended for the duration and Norman lost a sizeable
chunk of his playing career.
Guesting in wartime football for Newcastle, the mackems, Darlington, Aldershot, Brighton and Chester,
Tapken joined Darlo permanently
from Old Trafford in 1947.
After a spell in Ireland with Shelbourne, Norman linked up with Stoke City
as their trainer. He passed away in June 1996.
1942 George Colin Lambton born, Newcastle (1960-63).

Signed from Chester Moor, Colin failed to break into the first team picture at
SJP and dropped down to Division Four when signing for Doncaster Rovers
The full back made a handful of appearances at Belle
Vue during the 1963/64 season and later appeared for South Shields.
1956 Ray Hankin born, Wallsend.
(1993-2007, various)

As a player, striker Ray appeared for Burnley,
Leeds United, Vancouver Whitecaps (with Peter Beardsley), Arsenal (briefly),
Shamrock Rovers, the smoggies, Peterborough United and Wolves.
Often clashing with officials during his career, Hankin later played for Whitby Town, Guisborough Town,
Newcastle Blue Star and Sherburn Village WMC, managed and coached at Northallerton Town
and worked as a youth coach at Darlington before a brief stint as Quakers boss
in 1992.
A product of Wallsend Boys Club, Ray joined United's Football in the Community
scheme, succeeding Jeff Clarke when he was promoted to reserve team
coach.
However, Ray subsequently left in disputed circumstances and took the club to an industrial tribunal in
December 2008, claiming unfair dismissal. A settlement was reached moments before the hearing
commenced.
He was later employed as a support worker for people with learning
disabilities.
1989 Federico Fernandez born, Tres Algarrobos, Argentina.
(2018-22)

United completed the permanent signing of central
defender Fernandez from relegated Swansea City on transfer deadline day in
August 2018, haggling over a fee as the player had his medical on Tyneside.
Beginning his career with Estudiantes in his native Argentina during 2008, a
first senior international cap arrived three years later.
Moving on to Italian side Napoli in 2011 and playing under Rafa Benitez, Federico
spent one season on loan in Spain at Getafe but returned to the Napoli side
and featured for Argentina at the 2014 World Cup Finals.
A move to the Premier League followed and Fernandez joined a Swansea City side
that already featured future SJP colleagues Jonjo Shelvey and Ki Sungyeung.
He didn't have long to wait for a debut after his arrival on Tyneside
replacing the injured Jamaal Lascelles for the home game against Chelsea in
late August.
Federico found himself playing as part of a back five as United began to make
progress following a winless start, gaining praise for his calmness and
tackling prowess.
Losing his place to fit-again Florian Lejeune in early 2019, further injury
problems for the French defender then handed Fernandez a recall later that
season.
An injury to Lascelles early the following season saw him recalled to the side under Steve Bruce -
getting off the mark for the
club with goals in victories over both West Ham and Southampton.
March 2021 then saw Federico agree a contract extension to remain at SJP for
another year, returning to the side after several months out with a thigh
injury.
What would be his last season at SJP was disrupted by further fitness issues
and his final start came in a 1-2 defeat at Wolves at October 2021 - two
substitute outings following after the arrival of Eddie Howe.
A free agent that summer, Fernandez moved to Spanish side Elche in September
2022 but appeared just once, joining Al-Duhail in Qatar the following February.
He returned to Argentina in August 2023 with Estudiantes and after facing Velez
Sarsfield in December 2024, announced his retirement.

Newcastle began their Anglo Italian Cup campaign with a win at the Olympic
Stadium in an afternoon kickoff.
Two simple finishes from John Tudor could easily have been augmented by further
goals against a home side who seemed uninterested in attacking.
That didn't go down well with the locals though,
who bombarded the visiting team and bench with missiles at the final whistle.
"They were a filthy side, punching and kicking after the ball had gone. The
Italians are the worst there are for this sort of thing" said Malcolm
Macdonald afterwards, as he displayed stud marks on his chest to reporters.

Our fifth successive Anfield loss came courtesy of a John Toshack flick

in the League Cup Final.

En route to their Wembley defeat by Coventry City, David Pleat's Spurs side
scraped through thanks to a dive from Richard Gough under challenge from Peter
Jackson to secure a dubious penalty kick converted by Clive Allen.
Two years before the Hillsborough disaster though, United fans were almost the
victim of callous policing by the Met in this game.
The Park Lane end containing the travelling support was allowed to become
dangerously overcrowded while the adjacent paddocks remained closed and unused.
The first few fans to scale the fences
were arrested but more joined in and fought with stewards to open
gates on to the pitch.
And in an eerie foretaste of the Hillsborough tragedy,
seated fans above pulled some of those below to safety and avert disaster.
The police's reaction was to stretch a line of
officers in front of the away section which blotted out any view of the match.
After the final whistle attempts to hold the United fans back resulted in gates being forced and running
battles taking place along the Seven Sisters Road.
Press reports estimated the away support at between 12,000 and 14,000.

After five league wins, Faustino Asprilla's first start coincided
with a general loss of form at Upton Park.
Blame for our first loss in 1996 couldn't be laid at his door solely however, Tino hitting a post and having two
penalty claims
refused by referee Paul Alcock.
Darren Peacock had also struck the goal frame before Danny Williamson beat Pavel
Srnicek. Tony Cottee then sealed the win after Les Ferdinand missed a great chance to level.
With 11 games to play, Kevin Keegan's league leaders had a six point lead over Manchester United, with a game in hand on Fergie's mob.
2001 Paul Robinson -
once infamously picked by Ruud Gullit ahead of Alan Shearer - was loaned by
Wimbledon to Dundee United.
The fact that he scored a pre-season belter at Tannadice in 1999 undoubtedly
helped, Tangerines boss Alex Smith
commenting:
"I first saw him star for Newcastle reserves a few years ago, and was
not surprised when Paul Sturrock tried to bring him to Tannadice.
"Since then I have checked on a couple of Newcastle youngsters in my
capacity as Scotland Under-21 coach, and on each occasion it was Paul who has
stood out."
2002
The Reserves beat Bishop Auckland 8-0 in a friendly at Kingsway thanks to a hat trick from Andy Ferrell.
Mark Boyd (2), Michael Chopra, Bradley Orr and Colin McMenamin also netted, the
referee taking pity on the Two Blues and blowing time on 83 minutes.
