Update:
Catalans set to
win Gordon race

Latest:
The Times report that Gordon will become a Barcelona player in the next 24 hours for a £70m fee.

More to follow....

Earlier: In addition to the long-standing interest that Bayern Munich hold in Anthony Gordon, the England international is now strongly linked with Barcelona by numerous outlets.

25 year-old Gordon faced the Catalans three times in the season just ended for Newcastle in the Champions League, netting once - in the 1-2 home loss last September.

Under contract until 2030, the Magpies will doubtless hope to trigger a bidding war for their prized asset that they reportedly value at a minimum of £75m.

Gordon arrived from Everton in the January 2023 transfer window at a claimed cost of £45m, with the Toffees inserting a sell-on clause that give them a percentage of any profit Newcastle make from a future transfer.

Update:
Safe standing,
seat swaps etc.

NUFC confirm that the North West Corner of L7 is to be converted to safe standing ahead of next season, with a capacity of 1,741 places in sections L7C, L7D and L7E.

That follows consultations over improving the atmosphere and recreates the singing section in that part of the ground, disbanded in 2011 due to persistent standing (and their vocal output mocking then-owner Mike Ashley).

The process of relocating existing season ticket holders to and from that area takes place next month, with other ST holders also able to move seats - details here

Contract:
Lewis commits

From NUFC, Monday:

"Newcastle United are delighted to announce that Academy graduate Lewis Miley has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

"The 20-year-old has penned a six-year deal to keep him at St. James' Park until 2032."

Lewis joined the club's Academy aged seven and debuted for the U18s against Burnley in August 2021 - with elder brother Jamie in the same line-up.

Winning his first England cap for the U17s in August 2022, within days he'd been blooded at reserve level during an EFL Trophy tie away to Doncaster Rovers.

A hectic few months followed during which Lewis scored his first U21 goals, made two senior appearances in friendly matches and won the Jack Hixon Sport Newcastle award for most promising local youngster.

Introduced late on in United's 5-0 friendly win over Al-Hilal in Riyadh, Miley then had another brief runout in the home victory over Rayo Vallecano days later.

An unused substitute for United's Premier League trip to Bournemouth in February, his 17th birthday in May 2023 brought confirmation of a first professional deal.

His first competitive start came against Manchester City that September and he became Newcastle's youngest ever European player against Borussia Dortmund at 17 years and 191 days.

Lewis also holds the record for the club's youngest ever Premier League scorer, after netting in the 3-0 home victory over Fulham that December.

Having signed his first professional deal on his 17th birthday in May 2023, he put pen to paper on a long-term contract contract the following January.

The 2024/25 campaign included a maiden England U21 appearance against Spain but he was an unused substitute as Newcastle were victorious in the Carabao Cup Final.

Lewis started regularly in the 2025/26 season in both midfield and at full back, scoring Premier League, Carabao Cup and Champions League goals during a 19-day spell before Christmas.

However injury then saw him sidelined for 10 weeks, returning in April 2026, only for a training ground injury to end his season prematurely.

Liverpool 1-1 Brentford

Championship:
What lies beneath

Hull City defeated Middlesbrough 1-0 in the Championship playoff Final at Wembley on Saturday, Ollie McBurnie's added-time effort meaning that the Tigers join Coventry City and Ipswich Town in the Premier League next season.

Here's a recent history of NUFC visits to the three sides:

Coventry City (last faced in the PL 2000/01)
The Sky Blues have moved from Highfield Road since our most recent top-flight visit, a 2-0 win in September 2000 thanks to goals from Alan Shearer and Kevin Gallacher.

The CBS Arena will become the 62nd different venue to host Newcastle in the PL and they have a 100% record from their two previous visits in other competitions: a 3-2 League Cup win in 2008 and a 4-1 Championship victory in 2009/10.

Ipswich Town (last faced in the PL 2024/25)
United return to Portman Road after a one season absence, having scored four goals without reply there in late 2024 - Jacob Murphy getting one and some Swede the rest.

Hull City (last faced in the PL 2014/15)
A 3-0 victory in January 2015 gave John Carver a first PL win as interim boss, Remy Cabella, Sammy Ameobi and Yoan Gouffran all finding the net against Steve Bruce's Tigers.

The Magpies returned under Rafa Benitez to draw 1-1 in the Carabao Cup Quarter-final during November 2016 before exiting on penalties in ham-fisted style - missing all but one of the four spot kicks they took.

Newcastle's most recent game at the MKM Stadium was a friendly in 2024, winning 2-0. That was their fourth pre-season visit after kickabouts in 2003, 2007 and 2018.

PS: The arrival of those three clubs at the expense of Burnley, West Ham and Wolves means that Newcastle's annual mileage will increase from 8,162 miles to 8,376.

Update:
Youngster on target

Antonio Cordero (Cadiz)
A 3-0 home victory over Leganes on Sunday ensured that Cadiz will remain in La Liga 2 next season, securing their place with one game to spare.

Cordero played the full 90 minutes, rounding off the scoring after winning his one on one with the goalkeeper: his third goal of the season.

Cadiz end their season on Sunday at Racing Santander.

Thanks to Tony Toon for his Spanish updates.

Trevan Sanusi (Lorient):

A 0-2 home loss to Le Havre ended Lorient's Ligue 1 season on
Sunday but our lad wasn't involved.

Travis Hernes (Groningen):
Thursday saw Groningen's Eredivisie season end with a failure to secure a place in the Conference League.

A 0-2 defeat by Ajax in the one-off playoff semi-final saw Travis play 67 minutes in right midfield, substituted with his team trailing 0-2, which is how it ended.

Matt Targett (Middlesbrough):
No fairytale ending for Matt on Saturday, part of the Boro side beaten at Wembley by Hull City in the Championship playoff Final at
Wembley Stadium.

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville):

Despite a 0-1 loss at Celta Vigo on Saturday, Seville were able to preserve their place in La Liga, finishing 13th.

Although there's no provision in the loan deal, it's claimed by Spanish media outlets that Seville now will seek to sign the goalkeeper permanently after avoiding relegation.

Update:
Schar set to stay

Speaking to the media on Friday, Eddie Howe confirmed that a contract extension is in the offing for defender Fabian Schar, who is set to become a free agent this summer.

The 34 year-old former Swiss international made the last of his 251 league and cup appearances against Leeds United last January. Having recovered from an ankle injury, he's currently recuperating after an operation on his foot.

2026/27:
More Murrayfield talk

Update: speaking to the media on Friday, Eddie Howe confirmed that pre-season will begin on July 13th and include a training camp in the Spanish resort of La Manga.

Earlier: Wednesday brought further claims of a pre-season fixture between Newcastle and Everton at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium, possibly on Wednesday August 12th.

A game on that date appeared on the Ticketmaster website before the linked page was taken down - neither club have confirmed the fixture as yet.

A pair of home friendlies over the weekend of August 15th/16th is anticipated, with Serie A side AS Roma and French League Strasbourg among rumoured opponents.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.

Only those within the new loyalty point total are eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

PL away ticket prices will remain unchanged at £30 for both 2026/27 and 2027/28.

On This Day in History
27th May

Born Or Died:

1929 Ellis Reginald Davies born, Cymmer, Wales. (1951-58)

Inside forward who began his career at Cwm Athletic before joining Southampton as an amateur - having opted to give up a promising career as a choir Soprano.

After completing his national service with the Army Medical Corps, Reg signed for Southend United in 1949. A £9,000 deal then saw him switch to Tyneside in April 1951.

Making a goalscoring debut against Wolves at SJP in October 1951 Davies went to hit 50 goals in 170 games. However he wasn't selected for the 1952 FA Cup Final side (being the 12th man in pre-sub days) and a bout of tonsilitis robbed him of a place in the Wembley lineup in 1955.

Capped six times by Wales - all coming while a Magpie - Reg first represented his country against Scotland in 1953.

Moving on to Swansea Town in 1958 in part -exchange for Ivor Allchurch, he later signed for Carlisle and Merthyr Tydfil, before serving as player-manager of Kings Lynn.

Reg subsequently emigrated to Australia and coached Bayswater United and Ascot, playing on until his 50th birthday in 1979.

He remained in Western Australia until his death in February 2009.

1932 Roy Stephenson born, Crook.
(
1948-49)

Right winger who was a part of Newcastle United's "N's" nursery squad in addition to playing for Crook Colliery Welfare, netting a hat-trick on his Magpies debut in May 1948.

Failing to progress at Gallowgate, Roy went on trial at Burnley in 1948 and signed a professional contract the following June, making his senior debut a year later.

During his time at Turf Moor, Roy was in lodgings with the mother of fellow player Jimmy Adamson and in 1954 discovered her body in the kitchen, giving evidence at an inquest that found she took her own life.

Also playing cricket for Burnley, his seven year stint at the Clarets ended in 1956 with a move to Second Division Rotherham United.

After spells at Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City, Stephenson signed for Ipswich Town in 1960 and helped them clinch the Second and First Division titles in successive seasons.

Enduring relegation before his time at Portman Road ended in 1965, he moved to non-league Lowestoft Town.

Roy remained in Suffolk and later worked in a scrapyard, passing away in February 2000 following a diagnosis of stomach cancer.

1940 Death of Stan Docking, 25.
(1934-38)

Tragically, Stan succumbed to a heart attack while on leave from the RAF at his home in Whitley Bay.

1967 Paul Gascoigne born, Dunston.
(1980-88)

From April 13th 1985 to September 22nd 2004, "Gazza" enjoyed a career that saw him make over 450 club appearances and score in excess of 100 goals.

Beginning his career at Newcastle United as a substitute at home to QPR, he moved on to Spurs, Lazio (Italy), Rangers (Scotland), Boro, Everton, Burnley, Gansu Tianma (China) and Boston United - his final game a League Cup tie against Fulham at York Street.

What's happened to him since has been frequently newsworthy and often tragic - recounted with glee by tabloids and TV alike. Excuse us if we don't follow suit.

Rejected by Bobby Robson's Ipswich Town  as a youngster, Gascoigne's performances for Redheugh Boys Club resulted in his joining United on schoolboy forms in 1980.

Appearing as a ball boy, he later became Kevin Keegan's boot boy and signed as an apprentice at SJP on his 16th birthday.

The Gazza nickname was first coined by Magpies youth coach Colin Suggett and the midfielder caught the eye in the FA Youth Cup during the 1983-84 season.

Following the arrival of Jack Charlton as manager, a slimmer Gascoigne then led the juniors to FA Youth Cup success, scoring nine times in the competition.

By the time Watford were beaten in a two-legged final, Gazza had debuted at both reserve and first team level - and was then offered a two-year professional deal just before his 18th birthday.

His first senior start came at Southampton on the opening day of the 1985-86 season, by which time former coach Willie McFaul had succeeded Charlton.

Paul's debut goal wasn't long in coming - a solo effort that beat Steve Hardwick in the Leazes End net to round off a 3-0 win against Oxford United in September.

From then on until his departure for White Hart Lane at a cost of £2.65m after the 1987/88 season, Gascoigne entertained Newcastle fans in unprecedented fashion.

Be it wonderful dribbling skills, great scoring technique, bouts of daftness, the infamous Vinnie Jones knacker clincher or sendings off, there was plenty to choose from.

England also came along - with an U21 call-up - and by 1988, with local heroes Waddle and Beardsley both departed and United mostly in mid-table, offers from a number of other clubs arrived.

Turning down Manchester United in favour of Spurs, Gazza played what proved to be his last Newcastle game against West Ham at SJP in May 1988, scoring in a 2-1 win.

By the time of Newcastle's next home game the following August, he emerged from the away dressing room clad in an all- yellow kit for his Spurs debut - to be greeted by fans on the Gallowgate flinging Mars bars at him.

Less than a fortnight later Gazza made his full England debut, against Denmark.

2007 Sean Neave born, Newcastle.
(2018-present)

A graduate of Wallsend Boys Club, striker Sean joined Newcastle in 2018, debuting for the U18s against Derby County at Little Benton in October 2022.

Promoted to the U21s for a 1-2 EFL Trophy defeat at Crewe Alexandra during November 2023, Neave signed his first professional deal the following summer.

Netting within two minutes of his first PL2 start at Leeds in November 2024, he made the bench for the first time in the Premier League at West Ham the following March.

Following five appearances during United's pre-season programme, a senior career bow followed as a late replacement in the 6-1 Champions League win at Qarabag.

Top scorer for the U21s in 2025/26 with 15 goals and noted for his prowess from penalties, Neave was regularly named as substitute for Premier League games.

His first PL pitch time then came in the closing day defeat at Fulham, days before his 19th birthday in May 2026.

Internationally, Sean has featured for England at U17, U18 and U19 level.

What Else?

1969 Forty-eight hours before the home leg of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup final against Ujpesti Dozsa, the press reported that match tickets issued to players were on sale at inflated prices from a Tyneside grocers.

In the event the touts struggled to punt their wares and were left with fistfuls of unsold tickets when the game got underway.

1970 Vancouver Spartans (Canada) (a)

4,000
The penultimate game of United's six date North American tour saw Phil McGovern net for the first time in the senior side.

NUFC.com reader Seymour attended and recalls that it was played in front of a capacity crowd at the Swangard Stadium.

His post-match bonus came when half a dozen Newcastle players took advantage of an offer of hospitality - from his father!

Cue appearances of Moncur, Robson, Young, Craggs, Dyson etc. round his house for a celebratory sherry or five.

1972 Team mates Bobby Moncur and Malcolm Macdonald were on opposite sides as England met Scotland at Hampden Park. Little Alan Ball scored the only goal of a rough match.

1982 A one-sided game that hardly lived up to its friendly billing saw Ireland beatent 0-7 by Brazil in Uberlandia.

Newcastle's Mick Martin was joined in the side by John Anderson of Preston, who within three months had moved to SJP.

2000 Alan Shearer set up future Magpie colleague Michael Owen for the opener  against Brazil in a friendly at Wembley.

Managed by Kevin Keegan, the hosts also fielded Sol Campbell in a warm-up game for the imminent Euro2000 tournament.

2003 Tino Asprilla fired two gunshots into the air - apparently blanks - while jokingly urging his Universidad de Chile team mates to try harder during a training session.

Club President, Rene Orozco, confirmed the incident, but said, "It was just a joke, there were blank shots and it was not a real pistol."

2004 A 1-0 home victory for the Republic of Ireland against Romania featured United duo Andy O'Brien and Shay Given.

2009 Talks with Alan Shearer failed to reach any agreement after marathon discussions at Darsley Park and the position of manager remained vacant.

Meanwhile, Freddy Shepherd was rumoured to be heading a consortium of new investors intent on buying out Mike Ashley.

2019
Stories circulated that a takeover deal for the club was imminent: Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan set to meet Mike Ashley's price tag of £350m.

2020 A WTO (World Trade Organisation) investigation concluded that the Saudi Arabian state breached international law by facilitating the operation of pirate TV network beoutQ.

That copyright infringement prompted Qatari broadcaster beIN Sport to contact the Premier League - who in turn reportedly gave evidence to the WTO against beoutQ.

In other words, this was another potential obstacle to the proposed takeover of the club by a Saudi Arabian-dominated consortium.

2025
To nobody's great shock, the Swedish FA confirmed that Alexander Isak had withdrawn from the national squad ahead of two games.

An unspecified minor injury was given as the reason, media outlets closer to home claiming that the striker had a groin issue.
