Saturday sees the Magpies face the Gunners at the Emirates. It's a 5.30pm kick-off live on Sky Sports.

Newcastle go into this game looking to avoid their fifth successive defeat in all competitions, something that they haven't endured since January 2021.

Arsenal meanwhile kick off second in the table, behind Manchester City on goals scored.

LNER confirm an additional service will run from London Kings Cross to Newcastle on Saturday as follows:

Leaves Kings Cross 8.45pm, York 10.48pm, Darlington 11.19pm, Durham 11.36pm, arrives Newcastle 11.53pm.

The last train of the day to Newcastle leaves Kings Cross at 9.03pm, arriving into Newcastle just after midnight.

Team:
Joelinton serves the second of his two match ban while Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento both miss out through injury. Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth remain unavailable.

Coral rate this game as follows:

AFC: It's expected that Mikel Merino, Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori will all miss out on Saturday.

Arsenal have lost four successive domestic matches including back-to-back Premier League games - the latter for the first time since December 2023.

On home ground this season, Mikel Arteta's side have won 12, drawn two and lost the other two of their 16 PL games - Manchester United and Bournemouth both victorious. The only away side to keep a clean sheet were Liverpool.

Referee: Sam Barrott - fourth appointment involved United this season for the Yorkshire whistler, who took control of our 2-1 home win over Manchester City, 0-0 draw away at Wolves and 1-3 FA Cup home loss to Manchester City.

Howay the lad

Following his previous success with "The Boy on the Shed", former Magpie Paul Ferris has been nominated once again for the annual Sports Book Awards.

His memoir "Once Upon A Toon" has made the shortlist for the Sports Entertainment Book of the Year, the winner of which will be decided by a public vote.

Paul is up against some big hitters in the shape of Phil Tufnell and Martin O'Neill so every vote is vital.

Votes can be placed until May 7th

2026/27:
Pre-season whispers

With plans for long haul warm-up games abandoned, the focus turns to whereabouts in Europe Newcastle will be preparing for next season.

After previous mention of Austria and Portugal, The Mail report that a training camp is planned at the Spanish resort of La Manga, with of one associated friendly fixture.

The Chronicle meanwhile claim that Serie A side AS Roma have been invited to play at Gallowgate.

chase Magpie

Danish sports paper Dagsbladet report that Newcastle forward William Osula has been offered the chance to change his international allegiance.

The 22 year-old native of Copenhagen has been an unused substitute on five occasions this season for Denmark, but hasn't yet made his senior competitive debut for them.

Osula also qualifies to play for Nigeria and it's now claimed that the Super Eagles are attempting to persuade him to switch ahead of three post-season friendly internationals.

2025/26:
Welsh trek for stiffs

Although their PL2 campaign ended without a place in the playoffs following a failure to finish in the top 16, United's second string will continue their season next week.

The Magpies will face Swansea City at the swansea.com Stadium on Monday, kick-off 7pm. Admission is free but tickets must be pre-ordered online (registration required).

If the scores are level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes extra time will be played with penalties to follow if required.

There's no mention of any livestream as yet.

Robbie Stockdale's side are one of 16 teams contesting the inaugural Professional Development League play-offs, a competition involve the following eight teams finishing in places 17 to 24 in PL2 (Category One Academies):

Nottingham Forest, Everton, Reading, Stoke City, Newcastle, Wolves, Norwich City and Derby County.

Plus the top eight PDL teams (Category Two Academies):

Brentford*, Sheffield United, Bournemouth, Swansea City, Peterborough United, Huddersfield Town, Watford and Charlton Athletic.

The new competition runs as a straight knockout, with one-off ties through to a final on or before Monday May 18th.

* Coinciding with their title victory, Brentford have been awarded Category One Academy status for next season.

PS: Engineering works over the weekend of the Fulham game mean that no trains will run between York and Northallerton in both directions on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Bus replacements will run between York and Darlington.

(Unlike other weekends when similar closures are in place, there are no direct services running via the longer route through Hartlepool).

Update:
Villa capacity reduced

Aston Villa confirm that rebuilding of the North Stand at Villa Park will see a reduced capacity there next season.

Initially that will mean the loss of 6,500 seats, resulting in a revised capacity of around 37,000. It's unclear whether the away allocation of 3,000 in the Doug Ellis Stand will alter, as displaced home fans are temporarily relocated.

Originally scheduled to take two seasons, Villa now claim that the construction will be finished within a year, with 2027/28 bringing an increased capacity of over 50,000.

Update:
Germans eye Gordon

Hours after confirming their latest Bundesliga title victory, Bayern Munich's close season recruitment plans are predicted to include bidding for Anthony Gordon.

The Times report that Newcastle have placed a £75m valuation on the England international as they seek to finance their own signings - and that representatives of Gordon may meet with the Bayern officials soon.

The same outlet claims that Gordon is "open" to the prospect of a switch to the Germans, rating them "clear favourites" ahead of other suitors Liverpool and Arsenal.

PS: Bayern's interest in Gordon is believed to pre-date his move to Tyneside in 2023 - links to the Bavarians reported during 2019, when the-then 18 year-old had made just one senior competitive appearance for the Toffees.

Harrison Ashby/Joe White (Bradford City):
The Bantams remain on course for the League One playoffs following Tuesday's 1-1 home draw with Plymouth Argyle.

Harrison remained benched while White wasn't involved.

A 1-0 home win over Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday ended Boro's winless Championship run and left them one point from mathematically confirming a playoff place.

Matt completed the first 81 minutes.

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville):

The goalkeeper kept his starting place for a 0-2 loss away to Levante in La Liga on Thursday, Seville's fourth defeat in their last five games.

All PL fixtures that weekend are provisionally listed as Sun 17.05.2026, with Sat 16.05.2026 set aside exclusively for the FA Cup Final to be played at Wembley.

West Ham's FA Cup quarter-final defeat means that our fixture can take place over that weekend, but depending on the live TV selections could still be played on Fri 15.05.2026, Sun 17.05.2026 or Mon 18.05.2026.

PL games are also set to be played on Tue 19.05.2026, but it's expected that those only will be the ones postponed due to teams involved playing in the FA Cup Final.

Although PL's guidance stated that the live TV selections for that weekend would be available on Wed 08.04, the FSA (Football Supporters Association) spotted that this section of the PL website was sneakily amended to read:

Post-FA Cup semi-finals: FA Cup semi-finals take place on 25-26 April. This is to avoid further amendments to Premier League matches scheduled for the same weekend.

2026/27:
Season ticket waiting
list announced

NUFC confirm that a season ticket waiting list will open up ahead of next season, with a minimum of 250 available.

Entry to the waiting list is restricted to club members, who can sign up between Mon 18.05.2026 and Sun 31.05.2026.

A ballot will then take place with entrants placed in priority groups according to criteria set by the club. Ballot winners can then purchase season tickets from Wed 10.06.2026.

While the purchase of a 2026/27 membership isn't required to join the waiting list, anyone who doesn't win this ballot would need to continue paying for membership in order to maintain their place in the queue for future ST releases.

While the minimum figure of 250 for this year is set, there's no mention of how many STs will be offered thereafter.

Cup win for Toon duo

Young Magpies Les Yeutembip and Jayden Kouossu both featured for England U16s in recent days as they triumphed in the Vertex Cup over in the USA.

Midfielder Kouosso gave the young Lions a half time lead against the hosts in Miami, but the USA levelled and went on to win 5-4 on penalties - neither Magpie taking a penalty.

Sunday then saw England come from behind to defeat Argentina 2-1, with Jayden a late arrival from the bench.

England then concluded with a 5-1 defeat of Mexico on Wednesday, central defender Les in the starting line-up. Jayden appeared as a substitute.

Johan joins: official

From NUFC:

Newcastle United have completed a deal to sign Ecuadorian winger Johan Martinez from Independiente del Valle.

The 16-year-old will officially join the Magpies after his 18th birthday in the summer of 2027 (on May 10th) and will remain with Independiente del Valle in the meantime.

Johan was part of the Independiente del Valle youth team who won the Ecuadorian U17 title in December 2025.

Ross Wilson, Newcastle United Sporting Director, said:

"We’re delighted to beat off serious competition from leading clubs across Europe to bring Johan to Newcastle United.

"Identifying and recruiting promising young players is a key part of how we build for the future, and our scouting and recruitment teams have worked diligently to secure Johan’s signature.

"Independiente del Valle have a strong reputation for developing young players and Johan has undoubtedly benefited from that environment.

"He will continue his progress there while we maintain a close connection with his development, and we look forward to welcoming him to Newcastle next year.”

Premier League:
Brighton (h)

Newcastle play their penultimate PL home game of the season on Saturday week when Albion head north.

It's an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm kick-off.

Hat sellers Football Bobbles will have a stall outside the Trent House pub from Noon. Card payments accepted.

The Magpies have failed to beat the Seagulls in any of the last six league and cup meetings at home and away, losing to them in both PL and FA Cup at Gallowgate last season.

Danny Welbeck scored in both of those Brighton victories and also hit a brace when his side beat United 2-1 at the Amex Stadium last October.

Team: Joelinton is available following suspension.

BHAFC: To follow

Fabian Hurzeler's side have a ten day break ahead of their visit to Tyneside, with a blank weekend caused by their opponents Chelsea making it to the FA Cup Semi-finals.

The rearranged game ended in 3-0 victory for Albion, extending their unbeaten run to five games.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.

Only those within the new loyalty point total are eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

PL away ticket prices will remain unchanged at £30 for both 2026/27 and 2027/28.

On This Day in History
24th April

Born Or Died:

1929 David Boyle born, Tynemouth.
(1947-49)

Inside forward who failed to make a senior appearance at SJP, moving on to Berwick Rangers, Barnsley, Crewe and Chesterfield.

A spell at Bradford City between 1956 and 1960 saw him play alongside future Magpie Trevor Hockey, before joining Scarborough.

Ending his career at Bacup Borough, David worked at Allied Bakeries in Bradford.

In later life, he became a highly-rated crown green bowls player until illness forced him to retire. He passed away in November 2009.

1962 Stuart Pearce born, Hammersmith, London. (1997-99)

England international penalty misser & taker, fully-qualified spark, punk fan, Pizza Hut advert star and belatedly, a Magpie.

Beginning in non-league with Wealdstone, Pearce first faced United when playing at Coventry City, before a 12 year association with Nottingham Forest raised his profile.

Having provided the opposition for his City Ground testimonial in May 1996, Newcastle signed the defender the following year and Psycho proved to be probably the most effective (& popular) of Kenny's Dad's Army.

24 hours after moving to SJP on a free transfer from Forest, 35 year-old Pearce debuted in the number 3 shirt in a 3-2 pre-season win at Birmingham City.

His only competitive strike was a free-kick against Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League, although he did belt one home in a pre-season home game against Juventus.

A Cup Final appearance against Arsenal followed but his time on Tyneside drew to a close after Gullit's appointment as Manager.

Pearce continued playing in the top flight with West Ham, but suffered two broken legs within six months, which sidelined him for most of the 1999/00 season.

However, that same season saw him reverse his international retirement at the request of Kevin Keegan - then England boss -, two further caps boosting his total to 78 (although none came while at SJP).

Pearce followed KK to Manchester City in 2001, playing one final season as captain and helping them achieve promotion to the top flight.

Concentrating on coaching, Pearce assisted Keegan and succeeded him as full-time City boss in March 2005, initially as caretaker.

However, a run of poor form coupled with the sale of the club saw him replaced in 2007 by Sven, allowing Pearce to switch his part-time England U21 coaching position to a full-time role.

Taking over from Fabio Capello as England first team boss on a temporary basis in the build-up to Euro 2012, combining this with his U21 role and management of Team GB ahead, of the 2012 Olympics.

However, after a poor showing at the UEFA U21 Championships in Israel when England lost all of their group matches, his contract wasn't renewed.

It was announced in April 2014 that Pearce would take over as new boss of Nottingham Forest on July 1st, after having previously declined the position.

After a bright start at the City Ground however things rapidly went downhill and he was removed from his position in February 2015, turning down the chance to become Forest's Director of Football.

He then pursued a media punditry career on both TV and radio before making a low-level, part-time return to coaching at Portsmouth during the latter part of 2017.

And by November of that year he'd been confirmed as assistant to the incoming West Ham United boss, David Moyes.

Exiting from the Hammers with Moyes the following summer, Pearce wasn't reappointed when the manager returned to East London in December 2019.

However he did return to claret and blue the following August, departing in 2022.

While at SJP he had a narrow escape from a road accident in August 1998, when a seven tonne council dustcart rolled over on top of his car near Nottingham.

Thankfully he scrambled from the wreckage of his flattened Rover totally unscathed.

He hit the headlines again in March 2025 when his heart had to be restarted after falling ill on a flight from Las Vegas to London. His recovery was swift and full.

PS: Pearce has admitted that one of his proudest moments came in the summer of 1996 - when he introduced the Sex Pistols live on stage at London's Finsbury Park.

1967 Lionel Perez born, Bagnoles-sur-Ceze, France. (1998-2000)

Goalkeeper who never dirtied a Newcastle shirt in anger, although he was an unused Premier League substitute numerous times after his baffling free transfer from the mackems in 1998 - another stunning Dalglish acquisition.

Highlights (not in his hair) included a penalty saves in a pre-season tournament on smogside and his transfer away from Tyneside, after a loan spell at Scunthorpe.

However, Lionel's finest moment remains the Wembley playoff final appearance against Charlton - for the mackems - when he conceded 11 goals (including penalties).

After being released by United after 21 wasted months, Perez joined Cambridge United - where he'd been on loan.

We can confirm however that he failed to hand in his Newcastle subs coat and could often be seen doing a spot of gardening clad in it (our spies are everywhere...).

Lionel became something of a cult figure (yes, cult) at the Abbey Stadium, later playing for Enfield and then Chelmsford before signing for Stevenage Borough.

Following a broken leg he retired and joined the coaching staff at Broadhall Way, which saw him back in the news in 2006.

During a stormy game against Northampton Town, TV cameras caught Perez poking Cobblers coach Dave Watson in both eyes - for which he was banned from the touchline, fined and handed a 100 hour community service order by Magistrates.

He exited Broadhall Way soon after that and returned to his native France, where he coached at FC Chusclan Laudun l'Ardoise.

1999 Lewis McNall
born, Newcastle.
(2015-18)

Striker who attended Emmanuel College in Gateshead (for whom he played rugby), accepting a scholarship with United in 2015.

Handed an U18 debut from the bench against Arsenal during April 2015, Lewis grabbed a 16 minute hat trick against Manchester United at Little Benton the following September (a certain Marcus Rashford netted for the visitors).

Scoring for the U21s in a friendly against Ashington that November, a competitive bow at that level came days later against West Bromwich Albion at Whitley Park.

And the first of two reserve league goals in his maiden season came early in the new year there, against Derby County.

The 2016/17 season was a frustrating one for Lewis, injury restricting his reserve pitch time - although his liking for the FA Youth Cup remained, bagging six goals across four ties after hitting two in 2015/16.

Marking his return with a brace against Burnley U23s in September 2017, a 14 minute treble in the Senior Cup against Blyth AFC early the following year was followed by a loan move to Gateshead.

Netting for the Tynesiders after just three minutes of his National League debut, Lewis had scored twice in 11 outings when a knee injury brought his season to a premature end during April 2018.

Released by Newcastle that Summer, he underwent his rehab at the club the following season.

Having recovered, McNall had a trial at Stoke City but suffered another ACL knee injury that sidelined him again.

After an absence of 917 days Lewis made a competitive return during October 2020 for Whickham, signing for Blyth Spartans the following May.

He left Croft Park in 2023 and after recovering from a serious knee injury joined Dunston UTS in September 2025.

However McNall bowed to the inevitable, confirming his retirement within weeks.

Newcastle duly became Second Division champions but that was only confirmed by Northampton Town drawing 1-1 at home to Portsmouth later the same day and finishing one point behind the Magpies.

In reality the silverware was always heading to Tyneside, with the Cobblers needing to not only beat Pompey but also overturn an inferior goal difference of 20.

That did mean that no public presentation of the trophy took place and it belatedly came to Tyneside on May 29th, when chairman Lord Westwood, manager Joe Harvey and captain Stan Anderson received it at the Football League annual meeting in London, returning to the north east by train.

A breathtaking strike from Wayne Rooney saved a mediocre Manchester United from their first home defeat of the season as a patched-up Toon side threatened a major shock.

Darren Ambrose had given us a deserved lead at half-time with a well-taken goal after 27 minutes, seizing on a poor clearance from 'keeper Tim Howard.

Rooney was about to substituted with almost an hour gone following a dead leg in the first half, but when Peter Ramage headed infield, Rooney hit a stunning volley that flew past Given into the top corner.

Even then we looked like holding out for a point, which was the least a spirited display deserved, but Wes Brown beat a static Shola Ameobi to head the winner from a corner.
