FA Cup:
Familiar
foes
Monday night's FA Cup Fifth Round draw paired Newcastle
once again with Manchester City, with the tie to be played at
SJP over the weekend of March 7th.
A result must be reached on the day, with 30 minutes extra time
played if the score is level at 90 minutes. The tie will then be
settled via a penalty shootout if required. VAR will be in operation
for Fifth Round ties.
The draw means that United and City are set to play each other five
times this season and will meet in both domestic cup competitions
for the second time in three seasons.
The only real shock is that we're not heading back to the bloody
Etihad for the third time in barely a month....
This takes the total number of meetings between Eddie Howe and Pep
Guardiola in the last three seasons to 11 - something that is
unprecedented in the modern era.
A home tie means that Newcastle will play four times in succession
at SJP for the second time in 2026. Victory over Qarabag would then
make that five in a row, with the Magpies knowing they'll be at home
first should they progress to the last 16 of the Champions League.

enough to gave the

Ahead through Wooster's 32nd minute effort at Stoke's Clayton Wood
training facility, the scorer led a Newcastle charge upfield eight
minutes after the interval that ended with Pinnington claiming a

The Potters pulled one back through Pedro Nzau in the 65th minute

denying Finley Nixon deep into added time.

Friday night in a 0-1 home defeat by St. Johnstone in the Scottish
Championship.
Harrison Ashby/Joe White (Bradford City):
A 2-0 home win over Peterborough United in League One on
Saturday saw Joe omitted from the squad and Ashley make the briefest
of substitute appearances, brought on in the third minute of second
half time added on.
Tyler Jones (Dunston UTS)
A frozen pitch caused the postponement of Saturday's
Northern Premier League home game with Brighouse Town.
Joe Brayson (Morpeth Town):
The young forward's initial loan has been extended, but he
could do nothing to prevent the Highwaymen losing 0-4 at home to
Warrington Rylands in the Northern Premier League on Saturday. Joe
played for the opening 66 minutes.
Max Thompson (Ayr United):
Saturday's Scottish Championship trip to Arbroath fell
victim to the weather.
Antonio Cordero (Cadiz)
Saturday saw Antonio feature in the first half of a 1-1 draw
at Burgos in La Liga 2, a game that our man in the stand summarised
in one word, "shocking".
Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville):
It finished 1-1 at home to Alaves in La Liga on Saturday,
with Vlachodimos between the posts and his side claiming a point
despite playing with ten men for well over an hour.
Travis Hernes (Groningen):
The midfielder appeared as an 85th minute substitute at home
to Utrecht in the Eredivisie on Saturday when the score stood at
1-1. The visitors won it in time added on.
Trevan Sanusi (Lorient):
Injury meant that the winger was unavailable for Sunday's Ligue
1 home meeting with Angers.
Matt Targett (Middlesbrough):

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Scotland head coach Steve Clarke
confirmed that Newcastle's Harvey Barnes has asked not to be
considered by him for a call-up:
"This time I can say for sure, Harvey’s going to concentrate on
trying to play for England, he’s not going to come to Scotland.
"You can put that one out there. Nobody needs to ask me or Harvey
about it any more.
"Am I disappointed? No, listen, Harvey can make up his own mind. We
move on.”
28 year-old Barnes has one senior England cap, coming off the
bench against Wales in a friendly at Wembley during October 2020.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log
on and complete your purchase regardless.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered
to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Born Or Died:
1879 Jimmy
Lawrence
born, Glasgow, Scotland.
(1904-22)
United's record appearance maker won three First Division
Championship winners medals and one FA Cup winners medal during his time between
the posts at St. James' Park.
Signed by United from Partick in July 1904, Jimmy replaced previous custodians
Charlie Watts and Matt Kingsley, debuting in a 2-0 home win over Manchester
City in October.
A first Championship medal followed that season, but so too did the first of
four FA Cup Final losses – two of which (in both 1908 and 1911) came as a
direct result of costly individual errors on his part.
However Lawrence did collect a winner’s medal in 1910 – the first of two
consecutive seasons when he appeared in FA Cup Finals and Final replays.
Further Championship-winning seasons followed in 1906/07 and 1908/09 – the
latter being one of three seasons when an ever-present in both league
and cup.
Lawrence also boasted the enviable record of having saved four of the five
penalty kicks he faced against the mackems during Tyne-Wear derby fixtures.
A single international cap came in a Home International game for Scotland
against England in 1911 at Everton’s Goodison Park.
Lawrence played his final Newcastle game at home to Bradford City in April
1922, before giving way to his successor Bill Bradley and moving on shortly
after to become manager of South Shields (then in Division Two).
Next up came a spell in charge of Preston North End, before he was persuaded to
join up with German side Karlsruhe.
Enjoying title success with the club in 1925, Jimmy later returning to Scotland
and served Stranraer as both director and Chairman up until his death in 1934 -
while undergoing heart surgery in Glasgow's Royal Infirmary.
Lawrence's proud status as United's record appearance maker looked in
some jeopardy by 2009, as fellow goalkeeper Shay Given continued to rack up
games.
However, his transfer to Manchester City left him on
463 appearances, third in the all time list behind Frank Hudspeth's 472 games and Jimmy's unsurpassed 496.
PS: Further research uncovered the fact that Lawrence was six years older
than had been thought - having been born in 1879, not 1885 as widely
recorded.

1916
Death of Bob Benson, 33.
(1902-04)
Tragically, Bob died after making up the numbers for his former club Woolwich
Arsenal in a wartime game against Reading, having turned up as a spectator
following his retirement two seasons previously.
Leaving the field after complaining of feeling unwell, Benson died in the
dressing room a short time later, the cause being established as a burst blood
vessel.
The Gunners staged a benefit match in May 1916 against a Rest of
London Combination side, donating gate receipts to Bob's widow.

1968 Graham
Mitchell born, Shipley, Yorkshire.

Mitchell was scouted by United while
at Huddersfield Town and a deal to
bring the defender to Tyneside was struck, only to collapse when Ossie Ardiles was
sacked.
His successor Kevin Keegan decided against the signing
and Mitchell remained a Terrier until 1994.
Loaned to AFC
Bournemouth, he later played for Bradford City, Raith Rovers,
Cowdenbeath, Cardiff City, Halifax Town,
Bradford PA and Farsley Celtic.
His career
highlight though was a Wembley appearance in 1996 with the Bantams
when they won promotion to Division One - with a certain
Des Hamilton scoring the opener in a
2-0
win
over Notts County.
He later returned to Huddersfield Town as a coach at their Academy,
leaving in 2011.
1973
Christian Bassedas born, Buenos Aires, Argentina. (2000-03)

Signed from
Velez Sarsfield in his native Argentina at a cost of £4.1m,
midfielder Bassedas was a full international who had won a silver medal at the 1996
Olympic Games in Atlanta.
However he was
fated never to make his mark at SJP, sustaining an injury before making his
competitive debut.
That blow came during our pre-season tour
of the USA in July 2000, where Bassedas made his bow in a friendly defeat at DC
United before limping off at half time in a draw at Columbus Crew four days
later.
A broken foot was diagnosed, sidelining
Christian for over three months, when his
competitive debut came as a substitute
in a Carling Cup tie against Bradford City at SJP.
Christian's
only senior goal came at Chelsea in January 2001
and his lack of impact in the Premier League saw him join
Spanish side Tenerife on loan in
2002.
His final appearance for the club came in a dispiriting 0-1 reserve loss to the
mackems at Gateshead Stadium in 2003 - a
suitably ignominious point for him
to bow out.
A free transfer saw Bassedas
return to Argentina with Newell's Old Boys, but he was never to play
competitively for them after opting to retire in pre-season.
Working as a pundit on
South American TV coverage of the Premier League, he returned to Velez in the role of Sporting Director
in 2015, but quit less than a year later after crowd disturbances
following a home loss.
Remaining in Argentina, Christian later took charge of Boca
Unidos, Club Olimpia and UAI
Urquiza.
A return to Olimpia as Sporting Director then came in late 2020 before
taking up a similar role at Velez Sarsfield a year later.
That then ended
in December 2023.

Rounding off a miserable day for the Magpies, their post-match coach failed to
arrive at London Kings Cross in time to catch the 7pm train they were booked on.
After some hasty planning, the squad were accommodated on the overnight sleeper

United ended a five match losing run at Anfield that had gone on since 1953,
but it was to be another twelve games and eighteen years before they recorded a
win.
Postponed from earlier in the month due to the home side's FA Cup progression,
this game was staged on a Monday night.
Flowing football was in short supply on a frozen pitch with a covering of snow
left on it.
Match referee Gordon Hill was the victim of car trouble en route to the game,
but successfully hitched a lift to Anfield with a lorry driver!

side after coming off the bench early on to replace Terry Hibbitt.
A delighted manager Joe Harvey declared post-match that, "This
was magnificent. Tremendous. It was a team performance. They have never
played better."
"Our fans were magnificent.
They gave us a tremendous lift."
Baggies followers present tell of
visiting fans running riot post-match, with damage and destruction ensuing.
Of course you won't find us condoning the post-match looting but you can't help
but laugh about the bloke trying to hitch hike with a roll of carpet under his

1991 Following
the postponement of their Division Two clash at Barnsley, United beat local
non-league side North Shields 2-1 in a behind closed doors friendly at SJP.
The Magpies had asked the Robins to bring forward the Senior Cup tie
between the two sides scheduled for the following month, but Shields were
unwilling to surrender home advantage so a friendly was staged as an
alternative.
Scoreless at half time, United won 2-1 with Steve Howey and Archie Gourlay
netting - Trott scoring for the visitors.
Team: Srnicek, Appleby, Sweeney,
Gourlay, Scott, Roche, Peacock, Moran (Howey), Hunt, Sloan, O'Brien.
Following the Saturday morning kickabout, Newcastle boss Jim Smith and several
of his first team squad headed to Roker Park to watch Nottingham Forest lose 0-1
to the mackems in Division One.
That game came ahead of United's FA Cup replay at the City Ground two days
later.
2000 Unlucky for some, as thirteen Magpies were transfer-listed

Hamilton, Lionel Perez, Ian Martin, Carl Serrant, James Coppinger, Steve
Caldwell, Paul Talbot, Paul Arnison and Stuart Elliott.
2006 The
FA dismissed United's appeal over the sending off of Celestine Babayaro at Aston
Villa, meaning that the defender would miss the next two games.
2009 Having
begun his Magpies career in the FA Youth Cup at Manchester
City, new boy Haris Vučkić took
just three minutes of his reserve team debut to register a first goal for the
club.

Ewood Park, crashing home a shot from distance for the only goal of the game.
