2026/27 :
Low key start...
Newcastle
will begin the 2026/27 season against Liverpool at SJP on Sunday
August 23rd at 4.30pm - the fifth time in the last six years that
United have had a home opener.
In addition to player-related sub-plots - a possible PL debut for
Toon target Victor Munoz and the first time Alexander Isak has faced
his former club - it also sees new Reds boss Andoni Iraola test his
unbeaten PL record on Tyneside.
That Liverpool home game is live on
Sky Sports, who hold UK live transmission rights along with TNT
Sports. The first live schedule release date is in the week
commencing Monday July 13th, covering our first PL away game at
Spurs.
That game take places over the August Bank Holiday weekend and were
it to be played on the Sunday, would clash with rail work affecting
Kings Cross services.
The five midweek match rounds see Manchester United, Nottingham
Forest and Chelsea visit SJP. Trips to Old Trafford and the City
Ground comprise our midweek aways.
At least one Saturday game will be rescheduled as a result of the
opposition's European commitments; United's PL visit to Crystal
Palace on Saturday October 24th just 48 hours after the Eagles are
in Europa League Group Stage action.
Progress for Brighton into the Conference League Group Stage
meanwhile would require our PL visit to Sussex on Saturday
November 28th to be similaly rescheduled.
Coventry's
CBS Arena will become the 62nd different PL venue to have hosted Newcastle
when they head there during October for our first visit since
December 2009.
Following last season's away double header, the two festive season
games are both on Tyneside.
This season's Carabao Cup takes place on Sunday March 21st,
coinciding with the visit of Leeds United to SJP.
There's no clash with PL games on any FA Cup round weekend until the
Semi-finals, on or around April 24th. The Magpies are due to host
Ipswich Town that weekend.
The final home game against Crystal Palace is scheduled
on Sunday May 23rd, along with the rest of the PL games that weekend.
Saturday May 22nd is clear for the FA Cup Final.
The closing game of the season then takes the Magpies to promoted Hull City
on Sunday May 30th at 4pm - their first top-flight visit to
Humberside since January 2015.

United enter the
Carabao Cup in the regionalised Second Round on or around Wednesday August 26th.
They should
learn their opponents on or around Monday August 10th.
The usual FA Cup Third Round ties will take place on or around
Saturday January 9th 2027, with the draw for that set to be staged
on or around Sunday December 6th.
The Magpies are yet to release details of the home cup ticket
schemes for Carabao Cup and FA Cup ties.
USA:
Careless whisper
Penalised with a booking in Paraguay's
game against the USA after a review confirmed a dive rather than a
foul, Miguel Almiron made more unwanted headlines on Friday.
The Newcastle old boy was dismissed during first half added time
against Turkey after covering his mouth to speak to an opponent -
and breaking another new regulation introduced at this World Cup
Final tournament.
Almiron is the second former or future Magpie to be sent off at a
World Cup Final tournament so far, after Patrick Kluivert saw red
for the Dutch against Belgium in 1998 for a good old-fashioned elbow
in the face of an opponent.

heading in his side's first half equaliser. That makes him the first
current Magpie to score at a WC Final tournament since Aleksander
Mitrovic for Serbia in 2018*
(* Mitro had been loaned to Fulham for part of the previous season
but there was no purchase obligation and he was officially a
Newcastle player for over a month after scoring versus Switzerland
before his transfer to Craven Cottage).
Former Magpies participating in the World Cup include:
Miguel Almiron (Paraguay)
Elliot Anderson (England)
Nabil Bentaleb (Algeria)
Bradley Cross (South Africa)
Anthony Gordon (England)
Grant Hanley (Scotland)
Alexander Isak (Sweden)
Chancel Mbemba (DR Congo)
Mikel Merino (Spain)

Update:
Progress?
Monday brought multiple reports that Newcastle's new main shirt
sponsor is to be South African soft drink company KNOX, who
already hold training ground naming rights.
It's claimed that the new three year agreement will net
the Magpies up to £60m*, with the 2026/27 season set at a maximum of
£10m and the ceiling for the following two campaigns increasing to
£25m.
The KNOX branding of United's Darsley Park training ground
remains a
separate three year deal that begins next month and will boost the
club's coffers by £6m annually.
* The now-expired three year sponsorship contract with
SELA was confirmed by NUFC in June 2023, when no firm details of
value or duration were publicly divulged.
The replacement deal for the FUN88 brand was claimed to
be worth £25m per year, with no mention of performance-related
clauses, meaning that the Magpies banked £75m.
The biggest difference between 2023 and 2026 is of course
the fact that the SELA shirts were then set to be displayed in
Champions League games and the KNOX ones aren't.
On that basis, it's reasonable to conclude that the £25m
notional fee for 2027/28 and 2028/29 is based on United qualifying
for the prestige European club competition and that the value of
those rights is unchanged since 2023 - certainly from our
negotiations.
Update:
Recruitment mainstay confirms departure
The 15 year career of Steve Nickson at
Gallowgate is set to end with his departure this summer.
The 61 year-old moved from Blackburn Rovers to United
ahead of the 2011/12 season, switching from a youth recruitment
brief to scouting senior players in 2017.
Nickson continued in his role as head of recruitment as
Director of Football appointments came and went, but the presence of Andy Howe and his current position as Senior
Football Executive looks to have been the trigger that saw him seek alternative employment.
That is set to be as Sporting Director of Championship side West
Ham, but the Mail also claim an approach to Nixon by fellow second
tier club Wrexham.

2026/27:
Pre-season
Newcastle's only confirmed pre-season game so far sees them face
Everton at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium on
Wednesday August 12th at 5.15pm.
All ticket sales via Ticketmaster, meaning that there's no loyalty point
requirement and no loyalty points are issued.
Prices ranged from
£35 to £75 for adults plus booking fees of up to £13 - an
incredible uplift in cost compared to the £25 tickets at Celtic last
July.
While outrageous, the pricing is little shock to anyone attending
the Premier League Summer Series of games featuring Newcastle in the
USA during 2023.
That was also handled by Ticketmaster, with the cheapest ticket for
United's games against Aston Villa (in Philadelphia) and Chelsea (in
Atlanta) £49 when including booking fees.
There has been an inevitable backlash from fans unhappy at paying
the equivalent of Champions League ticket prices, the line "from
£35" factually correct but grossly misleading.
Although not administering this game (but presumably approving the
ticket prices), Newcastle's opportunity to make amends will arise in
the form of the home friendlies.
A sensible pricing policy for those games would seem like a small
but necessary action after the Lothian shakedown.
The teatime kick-off does mean that it's possible to get back to
London Kings Cross via train post-match - which may be handy, given
the price of hotels in Edinburgh due to the annual Fringe Festival
taking place at the same time.
We're uncertain whether this really is a "dry run" to test the
viability of staging future NUFC games at Murrayfield, were SJP to
be unavailable due to reconstruction.
Regarding the rest of pre-season, the players will report back
around
July 13th and include a training camp in the Spanish resort of La Manga
on unspecified dates.
A pair of home friendlies over the weekend of August 15th/16th are
anticipated, with opponents still tbc.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply for away tickets, 24 hours to determine success, then 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a
ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.
The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division usually get two hours head start.
NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log
on and complete your purchase.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a
reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.
Only those within the new loyalty point total are
eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already
closed.
PL away ticket prices are unchanged at £30 for both the 2026/27
and 2027/28 seasons.

On This Day in History |

20th June |
|
Born Or Died:
1960
Death of Bill Bradley, 69.
Goalkeeper who starred in
Newcastle's
1924 FA Cup Final victory over
Aston Villa, Bill
died suddenly - collapsing in the tobacconists that he ran next to North Shields
railway station.
1965
Neil Redfearn born, Dewsbury.
(coach 2018,2019)

Having had a brief and low-key
spell as Assistant U23 Coach in 2018, Redfearn returned to the club ahead of
the 2019/20 season to take charge of the U23s.
Instead of joining his players at a Spanish training camp however, the
departure of Rafa Benitez saw him assist Ben Dawson in overseeing the
first team pre-season.
As a player, the midfielder had enjoyed a career in excess of 25 years since
joining Nottingham Forest as a youngster and making a senior bow for Bolton
Wanderers.
Spells at Lincoln City, Doncaster Rovers, Crystal Palace, Watford, Oldham
Athletic, Barnsley, Charlton Athletic, Bradford City, Wigan Athletic, Halifax
Town, Boston United and Rochdale left him with almost 800 competitive
senior appearances.
A player/manager role at Scarborough followed before a brief tour of Northern
non-league sides ended at Salford City.
Having first taken charge of Halifax Town in a caretaker role in 2001, Redfearn
managed Scarborough, Northwich Victoria and York City before joining Leeds
United as a youth team coach in 2008.
That Elland Road association then saw him serve as caretaker boss in 2012,2013
and 2014 before eventually being given the post full time after the third
stint.
Within a year though Neil had been axed, reappearing at Rotherham United before
moving into women's football as head coach of Doncaster Rovers Belles and
latterly
Liverpool Women - although he resigned after just one competitive
fixture.
That pattern continued when he left Newcastle in November 2019
after just a handful of games in charge of the U23s.
Coaching Sheffield United Women from 2020 to 2022, roles in men's football
at Oldham Athletic and Bradford City then followed before taking charge of Farsley Celtic
for a brief spell in early 2025.
Neil's next position saw him placed in temporary charge of Durham Women FC
during March 2026.
1987
Death of Andy Donaldson, 62.
A talented striker who was forced to leave
the area to further his career following the emergence of Jackie Milburn.

What Else?
1924
The club's Annual General Meeting took place amid
unrest from shareholders regarding the accounts presented.
Despite winning the FA Cup, the negative effect on gate
receipts as a result of rescheduling league games to
midweek was given as one factor.
It was also claimed that the FA were mulling over a
proposal to switch cup ties to midweek after the First
Round (now Third Round) rather than move league fixtures -
something that would be adopted almost a century
later.
1975
Following the departure of Gordon Lee to Newcastle,
Blackburn Rovers turned to Colchester United boss Jim
Smith as their replacement manager.
1990
Newcastle skipper Roy Aitken led Scotland out of the
World Cup, going down by a single goal to Brazil on a damp
night at the Stadio Delle Alpi in Turin.
This was to be Aitken's 56th full cap for Scotland and
his sixth as a Magpie.
He did make one further appearance the following year
in a European Championship qualifier against Romania - by
which time he was a St.Mirren player.
1998
Future United flop Silvio Maric made his debut in the
World Cup Finals from the bench against Japan
in Nantes.
Croatia won 1-0 and Maric did enough to earn a starting place in the next
group game, against Argentina.
1998 Out-of-contract Newcastle goalkeeper Shaka Hislop was widely
linked with a move to West Ham - a move that subsequently
went through.
1999 Media reports
in Spain claimed that United had reached agreement with Real Mallorca to buy central defender Elena Sierra Marcelino for a fee of £5m.
This followed the acquisition of fellow centre half Alain Goma from
PSG.
2000 England's Euro 2000 hopes ended with a 2-3
loss Romania in Charleroi, Alan Shearer's penalty having
made it 1-1.
2001 The Football
Association announced that Newcastle United had accepted
an invitation to enter the Intertoto Cup.
That place had become available following the withdrawal of
Spanish side Malaga.
2002 Newcastle were close to
completing the signing of midfielder Hugo Viana from
Sporting Lisbon in an £8.5m deal.
2006
United
forward Michael Owen
was stretchered off the pitch after just seconds of the
England versus Sweden tie at the World Cup Finals in
Cologne.
Having missed most of the
previous six months with a foot problem, Owen badly twisted his right knee
- sidelining him for a further 10 months and belatedly
resulting in FIFA compensating the Magpie.
England's 2-2 draw with Sweden saw both sides advance, but
for Toon watchers the occasion was massively
overshadowed.
2007 Magpies
pair James Milner and Steven Taylor were in the England
U21 side beaten by the Dutch in an epic European U21
Championship semi-final.
Stuart Pearce's men eventually bowed out 13-12 in a penalty shootout after the
tie ended 1-1.
Milner (who would have missed the final through
suspension) netted twice from the spot, while Taylor
(struggling badly with injury) limped forward to convert
one.
2010 Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna announced that
their annual pre-season Trofeo Teresa
Herrara match would be played against Newcastle United.
2014
Moussa Sissoko became the sixth serving Magpie to
score at a World Cup Final tournament, netting as France beat
Switzerland 5-2 in Salvador, Brazil.
Along with old boy Yohan Cabaye, Sissoko and Mathieu Debuchy played the full game
as France reached the knockout stage.
2020 On-loan duo Freddy Woodman (Swansea City)
and Jacob Murphy (Sheffield Wednesday) both played as the Championship restarted following a 15
week break due to the COVID pandemic.
2021
Euro 2020 final action saw the Swiss
beat Turkey 3-1
in Baku.
United's Fabian Schar
was left
unused
on the bench.
2023
Two current Magpies were in the same Brazil side for the
first time ever, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton
starting a 2-4 friendly loss to Senegal in Lisbon.
2024
Newcastle's Kieran
Trippier played the full game as England drew 1-1
with Denmark in the Euro 2024 finals.
Anthony Gordon
was an unused substitute in Frankfurt, alongside
his future Magpie colleague Aaron Ramsdale and SJP old
boy Ivan Toney.
