Premier League:
Tyne Bridge!

Chelsea  0  Newcastle  1

Newcastle ended their long wait for victory at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Anthony Gordon's first half goal and some resolute defending giving Eddie Howe's side a first success here since Papiss Cisse's famous brace in 2012.

Thirty previous visits in the Premier League had harvested just 10 points from a possible 90 before today, but when Tino Livramento's pass down the centre of the field put Joe Willock through on goal on 18 minutes, he opted to play in Gordon to tap the ball beyond Robert Sanchez.

Taking the lead here isn't completely unheard of, but retaining a clean sheet was a rather different matter - no less than fourteen failures in league and cup following Tim Krul's contribution to that epic night over 13 years ago.

Despite starting a Premier League game for the first time under Eddie Howe minus
Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali though, United made the most of a home display that had disgruntled fans heading to the exits.

Reece James hit a post with a free-kick from similar range to that which beat Aaron Ramsdale at Gallowgate back in December, with substitute Liam Delap also going close.

The home side stuttered and spluttered with talisman Cole Palmer less than red hot; Joao Pedro contributing little on what became the first time in his career that he finished on the losing side in a meeting with the Magpies.

Wesley Fofana headed over and Palmer lashed a shot wide before Gordon's goal and Ramsdale saved from Palmer before Jacob Ramsey saw a deflected shot pushed away.

After the break, Ramsdale denied Delap and then a Gordon penalty shout was rightly ruled out after he intercepted the ball in the box before taking a tumble.

A foul on Malick Thiaw by James in the home box during the first half was far more credible, but referee Paul Tierney was unmoved and VAR upheld his view - although a pitchside review had seemed a reasonable shout.

Gordon's shot was saved in the 69th minute then Delap headed over the bar before Trevoh Chalobah headed wide after Ramsdale had missed a cross from the left.

Another Gordon shot was easily saved and Delap headed wide again before James came within inches of an equaliser in the third minute of added time, hitting the foot of the post from a free-kick 25 yards out.

Pedro headed onto the roof of the net near the end of eight added minutes, before the full-time whistle was greeted with relief and delight by the Toon travellers.

The win took United back into the top half of the table, four places above the mackems who lost at home to Brighton.

Eddie Howe said:

"As I said on Friday, I wasn't aware the record was that bad here for us, so it's nice to end that and get the win on so many levels today.

"That was such an important victory with what we have coming up ahead this week with the two massive games
(Barcelona and the mackems).

"It's great to go into those games with the good feeling that we have. And I thought the mentality, the effort today was very, very good. You mentioned the mentality and effort.

"It gives us huge belief. I think we needed to win today to give us any chance of winning in Barcelona and progressing through the Champions League. It's such a difficult game, but you need that confidence that winning gives you.

"That's back-to-back wins in the Premier League now, which is so important. We'll be in a better place for today and now all eyes are on Barcelona.

"I think our defensive mentality was key. We were really good off the ball today, in every respect. We rode our luck at times in the second half, but with the amount of times we've been hurt this season I thought we deserved it.

"It was an excellent goal and we were very much in the game. It was a great pass from Tino (Livramento) to slip in Joe Willock and very unselfish from Joe to pick out Anthony (Gordon).

"It's our first clean sheet in a long time. It's been a difficult spell for us. We've defended really well at times. We know it's in there, it's just about bringing it all together.

"When you make changes from the outside, there's maybe more noise than there should be. I thought Nick Woltemade was excellent. Jacob Murphy was outstanding.

"When you have players with the experience of Joelinton and Dan Burn to bring on, it's huge."

On his side's improved away form:

"I think, of course, we've analysed our away form almost as much as you (journalists) have, I think. I'd probably say our athleticism's returned.

"I think we've had really, really good physical returns on the road recently, and I think that's helped our results. I think that's always been the hallmark of what we've done over the years.

"We try to really compete athletically. I think you have to away from home, and today I thought our quick players really sprinted and gave them problems, so I'd say that's probably been the biggest difference.”

On Sandro Tonali:

"He was feeling unwell after training yesterday. It quickly became apparent that he would not be able to travel.

"Fingers crossed it follows a similar pattern with the other illnesses we've had and it is a quick recovery.

"There has been something going around now for two or three weeks in the squad and hopefully this is the same."

Stats:

The Magpies collected their fourth PL away win of the season, following victories at Everton, Burnley and Spurs.

They also ended a run of 14 successive league and cup games without keeping a clean sheet since a 3-0 CL home win over PSV Eindhoven in January.

Lewis Hall reached a half century of PL starts for the club.

Anthony Gordon scored his fifth PL goal of the season and the 16th in all club competitions. He has 23 PL goals for Newcastle, moving one ahead of Jacob Murphy, drawing level with Kieron Dyer and sitting one behind Joelinton.

PL2:
Playoff hopes boosted

Newcastle U21s  2  Blackburn Rovers U21s  0

Robbie Stockdale's first game as Newcastle's permanent U21 coach saw his side continue their recent resurgence and maintain hopes of reaching the end of season playoffs.

The black and whites went ahead after 13 minutes at Whitley Park, Park Seung-soo evaded two defenders for Sean Neave to drive in his 13th U21 goal of the season.

United doubled their lead four minutes before half-time, Park cutting in from the left to unleash a curling right-footer - a memorable first goal on home soil for the South Korean.

Rovers custodian Blake Wolsoncroft then did well to deny the hosts a third goal before the interval, his noteworthy one-handed save keeping out Anthony Munda's header.

Munda wasn't too far away from getting a curling effort on target on 69 minutes, the best opportunity of a low-key second period when the score remained unchanged.

Victory left United four places and one point away from the cut off point of sixteenth with three games left - although other teams in a congested table have played less.

Team: Harris, M.Miley, A.Murphy (Johnson 46), Pivas, C.Thompson, Finneran, Fitzgerald, Bailey, Neave (Salia 74), Munda, Seung-soo (Mills 79).
Subs n/u: Adam Harrison, Yildiz.

Booked: Bailey

Subs n/u: Thompson, Vare.

Booked: Mullarky-Matthews

Referee: Declan Brown

Earlier: Following an upturn in form since he took charge on an interim basis in January, Friday saw the Magpies confirm Robbie Stockdale as their permanent U21 Lead Coach.

The 46 year-old native of Redcar arrived at United during February 2025 as assistant to Diarmuid O'Carroll, staying in post when Adam Lawrence took charge last August.

U18s:
Late winner fells Forest

Nottingham Forest U18s  0  Newcastle U18s  1

Having returned to winning days in last Saturday's derby match, United U18s were in league action today, visiting Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon.

And they continued their winning ways with a shot by Sam Pinnington five minutes into added time that left the young Magpies third in the table behind the two Manchester sides.

Team: Dowell, Tika-Lemba, Bloomer, Epia, Johnson (Seldon 57), Morgan (Ndiweni 84), Pinnington, Callaghan (Patterson 84), Wooster, Gilligan (Hutchison 77), Ferreira.

Premier League :
Arsenal (a) update

The chances of Newcastle's Premier League visit to the Emirates Stadium going ahead as rescheduled on Sat 25.04.2026 with a 5.30pm kick-off look to have reduced following Monday's FA Cup Quarter-final draw.

The Gunners landed a last eight visit to Championship club Southampton on or around Sat 04.04.2026, with victory in that ensuring a Semi-final at Wembley for Mikel Arteta's side rather than hosting United on Sat 25.04.2026.

Were that to happen, an alternative midweek date would be needed for our game, notwithstanding possible Champions League involvement for both or either clubs as follows:

CLQF1: Tue 07.04.2026 or Wed 08.04.2026
CLQF2: Tue 14.04.2026 or Wed 15.04.2026
CLSF1: Tue 28.04.2026 or Wed 29.04.2026
CLSF2: Tue 05.05.2026 or Wed 06.05.2026

PS: West Ham's progress to FA Cup Quarter-finals means that their PL visit to SJP on Sun 17.05.2026 remains tbc - given that the Cup Final takes place on Sat 16.05.2026.

Premier League
:
Palace (a) date still tbc

Update: Tickets are now on sale to those who previously applied holding between 15 and 27 points. Closing date is Mon 16.03.2026 at 9am or early if all are sold.

Newcastle's PL visit to Selhurst Park remains subject to alteration from the advertised 3pm KO on Sat 11.04.2026.

Were Palace to win their UEFA Conference League 16 tie versus AEK Larnaca they'd play a Quarter-final first leg on Thu 09.04.2026.

The first leg at Selhurst Park ended 0-0, with the second leg in Cyprus on
Thu 19.03.2026.

That would then see their PL home game against the Magpies delayed 24 hours to Sun 12.04.2026 - as has happened for Palace's game against Leeds this weekend*.

(*That's categorised as a PL displaced fixture, meaning that it's a 2pm KO, televised live on Sky Sports. Newcastle's game would be similarly categorised if moved).

In the event that Newcastle were to defeat Barcelona in the Champions League, the scheduling of a Quarter-final second leg on Tue 14.04.2026 or Wed 15.04.2026 would also be a factor in when the Palace game is played. That's because UEFA take no account of domestic fixture scheduling when deciding the day that Champions League ties are played.

Champions League:
Barcelona (a)

Following a 1-1 draw on Tyneside, the second leg of Newcastle's Champions League Round of 16 tie against Barcelona is at the Nou Camp on Wednesday.

It's a 5.45pm kick-off in the UK, 6.45pm in Spain.

Live coverage in the UK is on TNT Sports.

Should the scores be tied after 90 minutes, an additional 30 minutes of extra time will played, with a penalty shootout then following if required.

Barring an incredible second leg turnaround, the winners will face Atletico Madrid in the Quarter-finals after they beat Spurs 5-2 in the first leg of their last 16 tie.

No power banks of any size are permitted.

Barcelona have secured a licence raising the capacity of the unfinished Nou Camp to 62,652 with immediate effect.

As a consequence, the Newcastle allocation increased from 2,215 tickets to 2,986. They sold out on 45 points.

Due to that increased allocation, the away support has been partially relocated within the Nou Camp - rendering some previously-completed seat selections redundant.

Confirmation emails with new seats selected by NUFC are being sent to the lead booker. The opportunity to select different seats wasn't offered.

Antonio Cordero (Cadiz)

A 2-0 success away at La Liga 2 basement side Mirandes on Friday night got incoming manager Sergio Gonzalez off to a winning start in his second stint at the club.

However Cordero remained among the unused substitutes - which doesn't bode well for his future at Cadiz.

Travis Hernes (Groningen):

Friday saw Groningen play a 1-1 draw at PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie. Travis kept his place in the starting line-up, playing 63 minutes before going off with the score 0-0.

Charlie McArthur (Airdrieonians):

It finished 0-0 at home to Arbroath in the Scottish Championship on Saturday. Defender Charlie completed the full game and collected a caution.

Max Thompson (Ayr United):
Goalkeeper Max kept his place in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Queens Park in the Scottish Championship.

Harrison Ashby/Joe White (Bradford City):

The Bantams lost 0-2 at Wigan Athletic in League One on Saturday, with Joe omitted again and Harrison appearing from the bench on 75 minutes and picking up a booking.

Tyler Jones (Dunston UTS):
The goalkeeper kept his place in the side for Saturday's 2-1 win at Matlock Town in the Northern Premier League and collected a yellow card.

Matt Targett (Middlesbrough):

More promotion jitters for the Teessiders on Saturday, as they were held 1-1 by Bristol City in the Championship. Targett completed another 90 minutes.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are offered to applicants with a reduced loyalty points total. Only those within the new loyalty point total are then eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.
2025/26 CL away tickets are €50 or less.

Born Or Died:

1939 Death of Sandy Higgins, 53.
(1905-19)

1983 Daryl Murphy born Waterford, Ireland. (2016-17)

Ireland international striker who moved to United from Championship rivals Ipswich Town in the closing days of the August 2016 transfer window.

The 33 year-old agreed a two year contract at Gallowgate at a claimed cost of £3m and became the club's most senior signing since Sol Campbell in 2010.

Beginning his career as a youngster at Luton Town, Murphy briefly appeared on loan for Harrow Borough before returning home and joining Waterford United.

Joining the mackems in 2005, Daryl spent time on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, returning to score ten goals as the red and whites gained promotion back to the Premier League in 2006/07.

Making a loan move from wearside to Ipswich in February 2010, a permanent transfer to Celtic failed to work out and he returned to Portman Road on another loan deal.

Netting 50 times in 119 Championship starts since returning to Portman Road permanently ahead of the 2013/14 season, Daryl had 23 full Ireland caps to his name when becoming a Magpie in August - including two at Euro 2016 - but was yet to find the net.

That changed within a week though, scoring in a 2-2 draw away to Serbia.

Debuting in the League Cup at home to Wolves, Murphy waited for his chance but then seized it - scoring at Birmingham City in the FA Cup in January.

He then repeated the feat in his next two games - against Brentford and Rotherham - before weighing in with a vital effort in the victory at Huddersfield Town.

Moving on with 12 months of his contract remaining as United returned to the top flight, Daryl received offers from various clubs before signed a three year deal with Championship side Nottingham Forest.

Almost inevitably, Forest were paired with Newcastle in the League Cup the following season
; the striker receiving a good reception when appearing off the bench in his side's 3-2 victory at SJP.

Fast forward 12 months and the two clubs met again
in the same competition, Murphy again on the winning side and this time net
ting in the opening two minutes.

Moving to Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer in September 2019, he rejoined former club Waterford the following August - playing a handful of goalless games before retiring the following summer.

1992 Yven Rochild Victor Moyo born, Orleans, France. (2010-13)

A low-key arrival in September 2010, midfielder Yven signed on a four year deal for an undisclosed fee from Sochaux - although never playing for their first team.

Moyo was first sighted on the substitutes' bench for Newcastle Reserves against Wolves, debuting three months later away to Manchester United Reserves.

However, that first appearance lasted just 45 minutes, the left-sided midfielder failing to reappear after the break with what was later confirmed as an ankle injury.

Allowed to return to his native France while he recovered, he made a competitive return later that season, scoring his first reserve goal against Norwich City
in September 2011.

Yven was released by United in April 2013, having trials at French side Bastia and Sporting Gijon in Spain.

Winning a contract at French third tier side Amiens SC, he went on to play for KF Laci (Albania), US Concarneau (France), Laval (France), FK Palanga (Lithuania), US Saint-Malo (France), Saint Genevieve (France), Amilly (France) and RE Durbury (Belgium).

Representing France at U18 level, Moyo collected a full cap while at Gallowgate in 2011, representing Congo* against Sao Tome & Principe in a World Cup qualifier.

* Congo as opposed to DR Congo, for whom Lomana LuaLua and Chancel Mbemba both appeared while with Newcastle.

United gave a debut for Edward Cooper at outside right, just days after completing a transfer from Glossop North End.

He was one of nine changes to the side that had drawn again with the mackems in the FA Cup three days earlier and faced their rivals in a third meeting 48 hours later.

Rovers collected both points despite having provided no less than four players for the England versus Wales international staged at Bristol City's Ashton Gate the same day.

A Neil Harris header put Newcastle ahead and they believed that Stan Seymour had doubled their advantage when his shot bounced down from the crossbar and crossed the line. Sadly though the match officials begged to differ.

The visiting defence was marshalled by Scotswood-born Fred Reed and he got upfield late on, firing home powerfully to claim a point.

Newcastle's run of three victories was ended by a Wednesday side who returned to the top of Division One, thanks in part to the threat of future Magpie forward Jack Allen.

Despite heavy snowfalls in the Sheffield area this match went ahead, with the touchlines at Hillsborough marked out in blue.

Beaten 1-3 in the first league meeting at Fratton Park and returning there to triumph 4-2 in the FA Cup, United were denied another success after a pair of late slip-ups.

Leading 3-2, Newcastle's Jackie Milburn saw his 87th minute penalty saved after future Magpie Jimmy Scoular handled in the box.

That miss proved costly when Pompey stole a point following a last-minute corner.

This thriller between two sides on the edge of the relegation zone gave United a first home win of 1958.

Having netted twice from close range earlier in the game, Len White memorably rounded off his hat-trick six minutes from time by running from halfway, dribbling round three defenders and hammering home.

1958 Meanwhile at Old Trafford, Newcastle Reserves also triumphed in another goalfest, defeating hosts Manchester United 7-4 in a Central League fixture.

Bill Curry led the way with four goals after his demotion from the first team, Jimmy Hill hit a brace and Reg Davies also netted for the Magpies.

1969 A waterlogged pitch at Goodison Park saw Newcastle's Division One fixture against Everton postponed at Noon the previous day.

It was resarranged almost a month later, on April 14th.

A memorable debut for Aiden McCaffery, at centre half, as Bobby Robson's Town side recovered from a 2-3 interval deficit to lead 5-3 by the 64th minute.

Supermac's second of the game six minutes from full time then reduced the arrears, but United just couldn't find a leveller.

Newcastle's winless run was stretched to seven games - during which their only goal came from a penalty kick.

This match is recalled for an infamous petrol bomb incident, which as legend has it, landed at the feet of Tony Cottee and John Cornwell in the North East corner of the Leazes end where the Hammers fans were housed (sign-fixer Brian Short reportedly received treatment for burns to his legs).

Benches were subsequently installed in front of the former East Stand standing paddocks, where the projectile had been thrown from.

The thrower (an 18 year-old) was caught and received a three year custodial sentence. Andrew Smith from Buddle Street, Scotswood reportedly said on arrest:

"I thought what Manchester could do with darts, Newcastle could do with petrol bombs, I wanted them in the news for a change."

After the conviction, Smith's mother Sally claimed others had put him up to it "just for a laugh" and explained, "Andy wasn't as intelligent as they were; he just wouldn't have thought of it."

Goalkeeper Dave McKellar made his United debut against the club that gave him his first chance, some thirteen years earlier.

Trevor Putney was dismissed for Town at 1-1 while Billy Whitehurst scored his first goal in a Newcastle shirt, turning home Tony Cunningham's centre.

Paul Gascoigne then rounded off his side's fourth successive league win, taking a pass from Paul Stephenson and whacking the ball beyond goalkeeper Paul Cooper.

Nigel Clough scored from the spot for Forest in this Wednesday night meeting, but Kevin Brock deservedly levelled to salvage a point for the relegation-threatened visitors.

"Newcastle are not dead yet. Believe me, we feel we can still get out of trouble" said a defiant Jim Smith afterwards. He was wrong.

Tino Asprilla inspired United to victory over the Sky Blues without actually scoring.

His back heel set up Steve Watson, a cross gave Rob Lee the second and the Colombian hit a post from a free kick given for a foul on him, which saw Brian Borrows dismissed.

Tino then tumbled for a penalty Peter Beardsley converted, before leaving on a stretcher saluting the crowd.

Once at the dugout, he then hopped off - miraculously recovered from his ankle injury. "He's different from anything I've ever seen before" said Kenny Dalgish. You and us both.

1998 United Directors Freddy Shepherd and Douglas Hall featured on the front page of the "News of the World" in what hacks branded the "Toongate" scandal.

Allegations included; calling Newcastle women "dogs", lambasting fans for buying over-priced replica shirts; calling Shearer Mary Poppins and claiming Andy Cole was crocked when sold. Oh, and making drunken boasts about the number of prostitutes they'd paid for.

2000 United's Reserves drew 2-2 at Bedlington Terriers in the semi-final of the Northumberland Senior Cup.

Goals from Garry Brady and Diego Gavilan took the tie to extra-time but a replay was required to settle things.

United returned to winning ways at the Valley following a 2-2 draw in the San Siro against Inter Milan.

Alan Shearer's penalty conversion was United's 600th Premiership goal - fittingly coming on Al's 200th league appearance.

That took him third in the list of United scorers with his 144th goal - joining Peter Beardsley on 108 league goals.

2006 Hopes of a third-ever FA Youth Cup final success hung in the balance after Manchester City recorded a 3-2 victory at SJP in the Semi-Final first leg.

Trailing 0-1, Jonny Godsmark marked his first start at this level by equalising on 43 minutes - and did it again on 49 minutes.

However the visitors soon levelled and went on to claim victory.

Defeat by
Louis Van Gaal's  side ended Newcastle's dreams of reaching the UEFA Cup final at Hampden Park and marked the point at which Glenn Roeder's grip on power began to slip.

Losing on away goals was especially galling after having led the first leg 3-0 before gifting AZ two goals that almost became three as we imploded.

Apparently intent on keeping AZ at bay for the whole game, an early defensive rick by rookie Paul Huntington had us on the back foot before an inevitable second.

And even then United still left their fans in limbo as they mounted a half-hearted late attempt to grab the goal that would have taken them through - Charles N'Zogbia on for four minutes as substitute.

A fifth successive loss at Craven Cottage was no shock for a side who looked desperately short of ideas and badly missed a high-profile absentee.

However, it wasn't banned boss Alan Pardew whose absence was bemoaned by the away fans, but rather injury victim Loic Remy.

Thoughts of mid-table mediocrity looked wildly optimistic as the relegation-haunted Toffees strolled to victory.

Fabricio Coloccini's stupid red card capped a gutless showing that did nothing to suggest interim boss John Carver was in control but with nine games to go, 35 points looked more than enough to allay any relegation fears....
