Fab 2027

Tuesday saw Newcastle confirm that they have retained defender Fabian Schar for one further season.

The 34 year-old former Swiss international was due to become a free agent this summer after eight seasons at Gallowgate, but has signed new a 12 month deal.

Schar made the most recent of his 251 league and cup appearances for the Magpies at home to Leeds in January, missing the remainder of the season with an ankle injury followed by surgery on a foot ailment.

PS: The absence of Mark Gillespie from the list of players leaving the club means that he's agreed an extension to remain at Gallowgate for a seventh successive season.

Update:
The departed

The exit of six senior Magpies from SJP is now confirmed, with
Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, Matt Targett, John Ruddy, Max Thompson and Aaron Ramsdale all leaving.

The first-named five become free agents, while Ramsdale returns to former club Southampton after the expiration of his one season loan deal.

The absence of Harrison Ashby and Joe White from the above list looks to confirm that the pair have at least 12 more months on their own contracts.

Meanwhile, seven members of the development squad have been released: goalkeepers Adam Harrison and James Taylor, defenders Ciaran Thompson and Thomas Bryant, midfielders Darren Palmer and Alfie Harrison plus forward Joe Brayson all moving on this summer.

Update:
NUST 2026 survey

The annual Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST) member survey is now online, including questions about ticket sales and distribution, ID checks and the upcoming Murrayfield kickabout amongst other topics.

Members should have received an email with a link to the survey - note that the closing date is next Monday, June 8th at Midnight and there's an extra incentive to respond, in the shape of a prize draw for a signed NUFC shirt.

NB: the survey is restricted to NUST members only, but renewals and new memberships are available for just £1.

Midfield exit
confirmed

Update: the permanent departure of Hernes was announced by NUFC on Wednesday.

Earlier: Dutch media outlets report that FC Groningen have exercised the option contained in his loan agreement to permanently sign Newcastle midfielder Travis Hernes.

The 20 year-old Norwegian youth international spent last season on loan at the Eredivisie side but didn't make his senior debut until January - the first of 11 appearances.

Signing a four year contract for an undisclosed fee, Hernes ends an association with United that began when he was acquired from Shrewsbury Town in September 2023.

Following a handful of U21 appearances and a single bench selection in the Premier League, Travis concluded his first season as a Magpie with two senior outings in the friendly matches played in Australia.

Two more friendly appearances followed ahead of the 2024/25 season; returning to the U21s until completing a loan move to Danish side Aab in early 2025.

Further pre-season pitch time with Newcastle's first team followed ahead of his temporary switch to Groningen.

news update

Speaking in Newcastle on Sunday, former Magpie Kevin Keegan confirmed that he's suffering from stage four stomach cancer, but responding well to treatment.

The condition was discovered while undergoing tests following a car accident, prompting the Keegan family to release a statement in January confirming his diagnosis.

Speaking at an event in Kings Lynn on Friday, KK told the Daily Telegraph, "I'm feeling well; I'm nearly through it, it's looking good, really good."

Sunday then saw him return to Tyneside for a show at the Opera House, joined on stage by Peter Beardsley.

Update:
Seat moves end Friday

NUFC confirm that the North West Corner of L7 is to be converted to safe standing ahead of next season, with a capacity of 1,741 places in sections L7C, L7D and L7E.

That follows consultations over improving the atmosphere and recreates the singing section in that part of the ground, disbanded in 2011 due to persistent standing (and their vocal output mocking then-owner Mike Ashley).

The process of relocating existing ST holders runs until this Friday June 5th, with other ST holders also able to move seats in the same time period  - more details here

Update:
Dalglish diagnosis

Former Newcastle boss Kenny Dalglish has confirmed his own cancer diagnosis, having accidentally revealed the news to his online followers:

"As my inadvertent social media post has indicated, I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well.

"Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand.

"Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected.

"As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves.”

Departure:
Gordon gone: official

Confirmation of Anthony Gordon's move to Barcelona came from both clubs on Friday evening, hours after a press conference was reportedly postponed due to issues finalising the paperwork of his transfer.

In stark contrast to last year's forced sale of Alexander Isak, Gordon's departure looks amicable, with a final interview from him posted on the Newcastle website alongside quotes from Eddie Howe and Ross Wilson.

Gordon's comments include the following:

"I owe this club a lot because, when I arrived, I was quite lost both in life and in football. The club has given me a sense of belonging and a sense of identity. It's allowed me to do what I always thought I could do. It's put me on the biggest stage and allowed me to perform for the shirt.

"Since coming to the club, I feel I've improved a lot on the pitch but this club has played a big part in the person I've become over the last three-and-a-half years.

"It was really important for me to leave this place in a good way because I've loved every single minute of being a part of Newcastle United. This is an incredible club and one that I'll never forget. I'll be a fan for the rest of my life."

Barca Sporting Director Deco successfully concluded negotiations for the player in London, amid abortive approaches from Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

The 25 year-old then left Newcastle by private plane on Thursday morning, landing at El Prat airport before undergoing his medical in Barcelona.

Signing a five year contract at the Nou Camp, Gordon's deal
will be ratified when the window opens on June 15th.

Gordon faced the Catalans three times in the season just ended for Newcastle in the Champions League, netting once - in the 1-2 home loss last September.

Arriving from Everton in the January 2023 transfer window at a claimed cost of £45m, the Toffees inserted a sell-on clause giving them a percentage of any profit Newcastle make from a future transfer.

Update:
Old gold for old boy

Following the expiration of his Newcastle contract, Kieran Trippier is set to join Wolves as they prepare to return to the Championship following their recent relegation.

Assuming that he passes his medical, the 35 year-old former England international defender will sign a two year deal at Molineux with the option of a third season included.

This will be the third time Trippier has played in the second tier, following Championship service with Barnsley and Burnley earlier in his career.

The last player to join Wolves after Magpies service was Mike Williamson back in 2016.

Murrayfield visit:
Everton (n) on sale now

Newcastle have confirmed a pre-season kickabout against fellow Everton at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium.

The Magpies and the Toffees will meet on Wednesday August 12th with a 5.15pm start and a
ll ticket sales are via Ticketmaster. Tickets are now on public sale.

As NUFC aren't selling tickets direct, there's no loyalty point requirement and no point will be issued to attendees.

ST/member pre-sale prices ranged from
£35 to £75 for adults plus booking fees of up to £13 - an incredible uplift in cost compared to the £25 tickets at Celtic last July.

While outrageous, the pricing is little shock to anyone attending the Premier League Summer Series of games featuring Newcastle in the USA during 2023.

That was also handled by Ticketmaster, with the cheapest ticket for United's games against Aston Villa (in Philadelphia) and Chelsea (in Atlanta) £49 when including booking fees.

There has been an inevitable backlash from fans unhappy at paying the equivalent of Champions League ticket prices, the line "from £35" factually correct but grossly misleading.

Although not administering this game (but presumably approving the ticket prices), Newcastle's opportunity to make amends will arise in the form of the home friendlies.

A sensible pricing policy for those games would seem like a small but necessary action after the Lothian shakedown.

The teatime kick-off does mean that it's possible to get back to London Kings Cross via train post-match - which may be handy, given the price of hotels in Edinburgh due to the annual Fringe Festival taking place at the same time.

We're uncertain whether this really is a "dry run" to test the viability of staging future NUFC games at Murrayfield, were SJP to be unavailable due to reconstruction.

Regarding the rest of pre-season, the players will report back around July 13th and include a training camp in the Spanish resort of La Manga.

A pair of home friendlies over the weekend of August 15th/16th are anticipated, with Serie A side AS Roma and French League Strasbourg among rumoured opponents.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.

Only those within the new loyalty point total are eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

PL away ticket prices will remain unchanged at £30 for both 2026/27 and 2027/28.

for a rambling explanation of sorts....

On This Day in History
3rd June

Born Or Died:

1957 John Trewick born, Stakeford, Northumberland. (1980-84)

Midfielder who arrived from West Bromwich Albion in December 1980 for a then-record United transfer fee of £250K, having moved to the Hawthorns as a schoolboy.

Making his debut in a 0-0 home draw with Bristol City,
John was a virtual ever-present until the end of the 1981/82 season.

However, after playing in the season opener against QPR in August 1982 (remembered as Kevin Keegan's debut), he didn't make another start until February 1984.

Having lost his place to David McCreery and going on loan to Oxford, Trewick played just three times for the Manor Ground as injury problems continued to affect his fitness.

However he ended his SJP career on a roll, returning to the side for the 2-1 victory at promotion rivals Manchester City and playing in 13 of our remaining 15 games.

Freed that summer, Trewick joined Oxford permanently and played in the League Cup Final win over QPR at Wembley along with Kevin Brock  (future Magpie Andy Thomas was on the bench for Jim Smith's side).

1987 saw him return to the Midlands with Birmingham City later moving to Hartlepool United, Bromsgove Rovers and Barnet, finally retiring while at Gateshead in 1991.

A return to the Hawthorns followed, as part of the football in the community programme and then later on the coaching staff - even acting as caretaker boss in 1997.

John was reunited with Jim Smith when he joined Derby County's coaching staff, later helping out at non-league Cradley Town.

A move to Hereford United came in 2004 and he almost make a playing comeback at the age of 49, named as a substitute against at Southport in February 2006 (after an Edgar Street injury crisis).

April 2009 saw him named as Bulls manager, following the decision by Hereford Chairman Graham Turner to relinquish his joint role and remain in the boardroom rather than dugout.

However, a poor start to the 2009/10 season saw Trewick tender his resignation. That was refused but after a poor season, he left Hereford in March 2010 - a decision that was mutual, according to Turner.

Within three months however John was back in football, joining the Shrewsbury Town coaching staff, following the appointment of their new manager....Graham Turner.

That lasted until 2014, when John retired from coaching and lived in the Solihull area, having gone into business with his son.

1962 David Howard born, Hartlepool.
(1979-81)

Centre forward who appeared for our youth side but failed to earn a professional deal.

He returned to his hometown club in 1981, scoring four goals in a dozen appearances at the Victoria Ground over the next year.

David later played for Crook Town.

1985 Papiss Demba Cisse
born, Dakar, Senegal. (2012-16)

First mentioned in connection with a move to Tyneside in August 2011, the following January saw striker Cisse acquired from Bundesliga side Freiburg at a claimed cost of around £10m (£7.5m plus add-ons).

Joining fellow Senegal forward Demba Ba on Tyneside, the duo headed off to play in the African Nations Cup but neither could net in a trio of group stage losses.

Named as a substitute for the home game against Aston Villa in early February, Cisse was soon called into action when Leon Best limped off and appeared wearing number 9 to a great ovation from home fans.

And those cheers were even louder when Papiss slammed home the winner at the Gallowgate End with a fabulous volley.

That began
a remarkable run of 13 goals in 14 matches, including memorable strikes against Swansea and Chelsea - his second outrageous effort at Stamford Bridge judged as BBC and Sky's goal of the season.

Cissé was playing in his home city of Dakar when he completed a move to French side Metz in 2004, spending time on loan with Cherbourg and Chateauroux before making the switch to Freiburg in 2009.

Winning his first senior cap in August 2009, he was awarded the captaincy in May 2012 for a friendly and led his side in a World Cup qualifier on the eve of his 27th birthday.

And although Senegal beat Liberia 3-1 in Dakar, Papiss missed a penalty and the chance to net his 11th goal in 20 games.

Second season syndrome seemed to afflict Cisse and although he netted 13 times, eight Premier League goals from 36 appearances was a big disappointment after his remarkable first season.

It's difficult to say whether losing striking partner, Demba Ba, in the January transfer window hindered or helped Cisse but they both finished the season with the same number of cup and league goals for United.

The decline continued into the following campaign despite the departure of Ba in January and the 2013/14 season was overshadowed by a row over the club's incoming shirt sponsor - Wonga.

Apparently unable to reconcile wearing kit advertising money lenders with his faith (despite previously being a human billboard for Virgin Money) with his muslim faith, Cisse's stance saw him excluded from the club's pre-season visit to Portugal.

However, the rift was repaired in time for him to feature - and score in a kickabout at St. Mirren, clad in Wonga-branded clobber.

Sadly that pre-season effort was followed by just four more in competitive games (two in the Premier League from 24 appearances) before a broken kneecap ended his season prematurely in April 2014 and dampened talk of a summer departure from Gallowgate.

He returned from injury to get his manager out of a hole by scoring twice as a substitute at home to Hull and then two more at Swansea kick-started United's season.

Seven more Premier League strikes, often from the bench, proved crucial in maintaining Premier League status but he never appeared to be 100% fit after more work on his knee.

However, a seven game suspension for spitting at Manchester United's Jonny Evans and an earlier ban for an elbow on Everton's Seamus Coleman (both incidents caught on camera) saw Cisse sit out ten games as his side endured a dramatic loss of form.

Tipped to leave as Steve McClaren arrived, Cisse featured in most of the pre-season and scored our first league goal of the campaign, at home to Southampton.

Just two more goals follow
ed however, as he contributed little. A groin injury saw him miss a dozen league games - and significantly, the January 2016 transfer window.

Playing for the final time in a 0-0 draw at Aston Villa that virtually sealed relegation, Cisse finally got the move he craved in July 2016, joining Chinese Super League side Shandong Luneng for an undisclosed fee.

He then moved on
to Turkish side Alanyaspor in August 2018, bagging 16 goals from 26 league games in his first season and nine from 12 in his second.

On 28th April 2019, the minibus Papiss was travelling in after an away game was involved in an accident. He sustained minor injuries but team mate Josef Sural lost his life.

Joining rivals Fenerbahce in October 2020, Papiss was a free agent by his 36th birthday and trained at Watford in September 2021.

However, his next move was back to Turkey, with Caykur Rizespor on a short term deal that expired in summer 2022.

That was then followed by a season-long switch to French Ligue 2 side Amiens SC in August 2022
that harvested 13 goals.

2025 saw Papiss help fellow SJP old boy Steven Taylor guide UAE side Al-Qaliba to promotion in their maiden season - a goal from Cisse earning a 1-1 draw and a place in the Second Division.

He then returned to England, where he played for Wythenshawe Vets, an all-star Sunday side that also included SJP reject Stephen Ireland.

What Else?

1930 Newcastle United Reserves joined the Central League for the very first time, Stockport County's attempt at gaining re-election at the league's AGM seeing them gain one less vote than United.

1973 AC Fiorentina (Italy) (a) 2-1

Anglo Italian Cup Final
og(Superchi)(35), D.Craig(54)
Clerici(79)
45,000

The Journal broke news of Newcastle's cup conquest in Florence under the headline, "United pull off the Italian Job."

A 9pm kick-off on a Sunday evening in the Stadio Communale did little to lessen the humid conditions, resulting in both sides playing at a leisurely pace.

Two errors by Viola goalkeeper Franco Superchi were crucial; fisting a Tommy Gibb cross into his own net for the opener, then allowing a long shot from David Craig to squirm under his body.

Bob Moncur collected the trophy from UEFA (and Fiorentina) President Artemio Franchi but the Magpies wouldn't have an opportunity to defend their title, when it was discontinued the following season.

Without Malcolm Macdonald and Stewie Barrowclough due to England duty, boss Joe Harvey commented, "They won well - there is no doubt about that. I thought the boys were magnificent."

Team: McFaul, Craig, Clark, McDermott, Howard, Moncur, Cassidy, Smith, Tudor, Gibb, Hibbitt. Subs: Nattrass, Robson.

1984 Newcastle defender John Anderson popped out for a Chinese - in Japan.

Ando was part of a touring Republic of Ireland squad participating in the Japan Cup, which had altered from being a club competition to one featuring international sides since Newcastle had won it in 1983.

Eire beat China 1-0 in Sapporo - home of the Kirin Brewery, who sponsored the event.

1986
Peter Beardsley made his World Cup debut as a substitute for Chris Waddle, but was unable to prevent England losing 1-0 to Portugal in Monterrey, Mexico.

1989 Future Magpie boss Bobby Robson and his England side were in World Cup qualifying action at Wembley, beating Poland 3-0.

Four of the first XI had NUFC connections; Waddle and Beardsley having played for the club while Pearce and Barnes were still some eight years away from moving to SJP.

1991 England U21s retained the Toulon trophy after beating the host nation France 1-0 in the final, thanks to Alan Shearer.

That was the Southampton striker's seventh goal of the competition and earned him top scorer & player of the tournament accolades.

1998 Newcastle announced their bemusing intention to sign mackem 'keeper Lionel Perez, who had turned down a contract offered by Peter Reid.

Judging by his performance for the mackems in the playoff final, many thought he had already signed for Charlton....

2003
