Burn out
Newcastle's final
representative at the World Cup Finals bowed out at the semi-final
stage on Wednesday*, as England and Dan Burn lost 1-2 to Argentina
in Atlanta.
Leading through Anthony Gordon's 55th minute strike, Thomas
Tuchel introduced the Magpie defender on 82 minutes as he attempted
to stonewall for a 1-0 win.
That backfired however, Lionel Messi's lot netting twice in the
closing stages and Burn finishing the tie pushed into a forward role
in a desperate attempt to force extra time.
A trio of SJP old boys also featured for England: Gordon and Elliot
Anderson both starting and Ivan Toney making his tournament bow as a
late replacement.
* England will face France in the 3rd/4th place play-off game in
Miami on Saturday at 10pm BST (on bbc1).
2026/27:
Opportunity KNOX
Newcastle's first team continue their
first week of pre-season training at their KNOX training ground,
ahead of Saturday's first friendly against Darlington.
In addition to recent signings Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen, Eddie
Howe also welcomed back Fabian Schar, Lewis Miley and Tino
Livramento following injury.
Saturday sees the Magpies face Darlington behind closed doors at the former Darsley
Park, with several development squad players in line to feature
after joining senior team sessions.
They include Park Seung-soo, Dylan Charlton, Matheos Ferreria,
Anthony Munda and Trevan Sanusi - the latter returning to fitness
after an injury-afflicted season on loan at French side Lorient.
Yet to return after their post-season exertions are Dan Burn,
Anthony Elanga, Bruno Guimaraes, Malick Thiaw, Yoane Wissa, Nick
Woltemade and new boy Bazoumana Toure.
Steve Watson's Darlo are preparing for another season in National
League North, beating Redcar Athletic 4-0 and Stockton 3-1 in their
opening two friendly fixtures.
The Quakers squad includes former Magpie duo Ellis Stanton and Dylan
Stephenson.
PS: The Darlington friendly isn't televised by NUFC.

Update:
Reserve departure
Midfielder Joe White's eight
years as a Magpie have ended, with confirmation of a permanent
transfer to League Two side Crewe Alexandra.
The 23 year-old native of Carlisle first featured at senior level
for Newcastle ahead of the 2021/22 season, before making a loan
switch to Hartlepool United.
Further temporary departures took him to Exeter City and Crewe ahead
of a competitive Toon bow in February 2024, making the first of four
substitute appearances totalling 12 minutes against Bournemouth in
the Premier League.
More loans then saw Joe appear for MK Dons, Leyton Orient and
Bradford City. His final outing for Newcastle came during the
pre-season defeat at Celtic last July.
Update:
Manzambi:
gazumped
Update: Having
attended Switzerland's post-World cup homecoming, Manzambi is
expected in Birmingham on Thursday to become an Aston Villa player.
Media claims that the player was reconsidering his options following
Villa announcing Visit Rwanda shirt sponsorship don't look to be
credible.
Earlier: reports on Sunday
claimed that Newcastle's elongated pursuit of Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi
had been derailed by late interest from Aston Villa.
The Magpies had looked set to conclude a £51m deal for the 20 year-old
once Switzerland's World Cup campaign had ended, but it now appears
that Villa Park rather than St. James' Park is his preferred
destination - along with Champions League football next
season.
Sadly this is starting to become a familiar story for Newcastle, who
saw their agreement for Osasuna's Victor Munoz earlier in this
window disintegrate once
Liverpool targeted the player.
Update:
We've got Bruno,
in a muddle....
Attempts by Newcastle to avoid a repeat of last summer's Alexander
Isak to Liverpool saga with Bruno Guimaraes and Arsenal continue,
hampered by the absence of a formal bid from the Gunners and
concerted media pressure.
Far from that unsettling the player though, it increasingly looks as
if this is driven from the Guimaraes camp and a deliberate strategy
to try and dislodge him on the cheap. Certainly the ploy of turning
supporters of his existing club against him comes straight from the
Anfield playbook - featuring some of the same media figures as last
year.
Claims persist of a
verbal agreement with Arsenal over personal terms, but unlike deals
speedily concluded for Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali after
acceptable bids were received, this one looks like dragging on.
As was the case with Isak in 2025, the absence of any direct comment
from the player himself is telling - his own socials singularly
failing to welcome any of the trio of signings he will supposedly be
captaining within weeks.
It seems beyond doubt that Bruno wants to go and given the riches
available to him elsewhere, offering an improved deal to remain on
Tyneside seems futile and a financial mis-step given our current
situation.
His departure would mean that all three captains who lifted
silverware at Wembley less than 18 months ago have gone - and while
Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles rightly went, a massive chunk
of knowledge and experience will have gone from the dressing room
since last season.
That's a situation that cannot be rectified by recruiting a posse of
international bright young things, even if that reduces the average
age of the squad as was desired.
Incoming:
Steur it up!

Newcastle have confirmed their third senior arrival of the
close season, paying an undisclosed fee for 18 year-old midfielder Sean Steur from
Eredivisie side Ajax.
The Dutch youth international
left Ajax's first team training camp on Tuesday after a deal was
agreed, flying into Tyneside ahead of his medical.
A fee of around £23m is claimed for Steur, who shares an agency with
current Magpies Harvey Barnes, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento plus
manager Eddie Howe.
Signing a five year deal, he'll wear squad number 14, vacant since a
certain Swedish striker exited last year.
A product of the Ajax academy, Sean made his competitive
senior team debut in February 2025, adding 25 appearances last
season including three in the Champions League.
Steur follows
goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen (£18.5m from Reims) and midfielder Bazoumana Toure
(£43m from Hoffenheim) up Barrack Road so far this window.
He'll become the ninth Dutchman to represent United in the Premier
League, after John Karelse, Patrick Kluivert, Tim Krul, Vurnon
Anita, Daryl Janmaat, Georginio Wijnaldum, Jetro Willems and current
Magpie Sven Botman.
The last permanent switch from Ajax to Newcastle came in August 2017
when Siem De Jong arrived at SJP - like brother Luuk a Dutch
international, but born in Switzerland.
Update:
Pro deals confirmed
Update: The Magpies have confirmed further professional contracts
for development squad players, with 18 year-old quartet Guy
Bloomer, Jake Durrant, Henry Johnson and Kacey Wooster
all now signed up.
Right back Bloomer, central defender Johnson and forward Wooster all
progressed from the U18 side to the U21s last season, with left back
Durrant about to follow suit.
Earlier:
Inking their first professional deals at Newcastle are 17 year-olds Sam Alabi and Mason Miley, both of
whom were blooded at U21 level by United last season.
Alabi was acquired from Oldham Athletic ahead of the
2023/24 season and given a first
taste of U18 football at home to Blackburn Rovers the
following April.
Debuting for the U21s at Harrogate Town in an EFL
Trophy tie in November 2025, England U17 captain Sam was an unused
first team substitute in the Champions League at Marseille
and Premier League at Old Trafford soon after.
The younger brother of Jamie and Lewis, fellow
midfielder Mason followed his siblings through the academy ranks at
United, making his U18 bow in August 2024 against Boro.
Miley's first U21 outing then came in a PL International Cup tie
against Croatia Zagreb during December 2025.
2026/27:

While a visit from the Bundesliga side the Magpies faced in last
season's Champions League was already known, the participation of
the French side has just been confirmed.
Strasbourg have appointed Hugo Oliviera as head coach after
Gary O'Neill left to manage Ipswich Town.
Portuguese-born, the 47 year-old is no stranger to SJP, having
previously assisted Marco Silva when he was in charge of Fulham,
Everton, Hull City and Watford.

TV times
The Premier League have published their revised fixture schedule for live TV
covering August and September, with
Newcastle's opening four games all altered:
Sun 23.08.2026 Liverpool (h) 4.30pm Sky
Sat 29.08.2026 Spurs (a) 5.30pm Sky
Sat 05.09.2026 Bournemouth (h) 12.30pm TNT
Mon 14.09.2026 Leeds United (a) 8pm Sky*
Sat 19.09.2026 Hull City (h) 3pm no live UK TV
* if NUFC or LUFC are in the Carabao Cup Third Round and drawn
against a club in the Champions League (Arsenal, Aston Villa,
Liverpool, Manchester City or Manchester United), this game will be
on Sat 12.09.2026 @ 12.30pm.
Assuming both sides survive the Second Round, a final decision on
the PL game will rest on the Third Round draw, which takes place on
or around Tue 25.08.2026.
The possible move is because Carabao Cup Third round ties are once
again split over two weeks, the first clashing with Matchday 1 in
the Champions League Group stage.
PS: Although trains are scheduled to run as usual between Newcastle
and London on the day of the Spurs away game, Kings Cross station
will be closed the following day.
Update:
Mike Larnach RIP

The death of former Magpie Mike
Larnach has been announced, at the age of 73.
The striker began his career with Campsie Black Watch and East
Stirlingshire, joining Clydebank in 1972 and netting 29 times as
they won the Scottish First Division title in 1976.
Newcastle made a £100K bid in late 1977, boss Bill McGarry looking
to cure his side's goalscoring problems by recruiting Larnach and
Mark McGhee from Greenock Morton.
Mike debuted in a 0-2 home loss to
Liverpool on the last day of 1977, failing to find the net in his 14
appearances and returning to Scotland following Newcastle's
relegation to Division Two, Motherwell paying £75K for his services.
Later playing for Ayr United and
Stenhousemuir, Larnach rejoined Cyldebank and complete a century of
goals. He also worked in the engineering industry at Grangemouth.
U21s:
Moors v Mags
National League North side Spennymoor Town are to host Newcastle U21s in pre-season,
with the Magpies visiting Brewery
Field on Thursday July 30th at 7pm.
Admission for that game is £10 adults, £5 over 60s/U18s, with
advance sales from STFC
here or pay at the gate.
The game comes ahead of United U21s staging a training camp at
the Pinatar Arena in Spain, after which Robbie Stockdale's side
visit St. Mirren for a behind closed doors fixture on
Wednesday August 12th at 12.30pm.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply for away tickets, 24 hours to determine success, then 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a
ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.
The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division usually get two hours head start.
NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log
on and complete your purchase.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a
reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.
Only those within the new loyalty point total are
eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already
closed.
PL away ticket prices are unchanged at £30 for both the 2026/27
and 2027/28 seasons.

Born Or Died:
1944 Albert
Bennett born, Chester Moor.
(1965-69)

Beginning his playing days with Chester Moor Juniors, Albert was a prolific
goalscorer and inevitably found his way to SJP on trial.
Newcastle's hesitation in offering Albert terms however cost them dear when
Rotherham United signed the apprentice bricklayer in
1961.
A regular goalscorer at Millmoor, Bennett was selected for
England U23 duty against Wales at Wrexham in November 1964, only to break his
ankle in a tussle with future Magpie colleague Ollie Burton.
Recovering fitness and gaining his nickname of "ankles" for the bandages he later
wore for protection, Division One-bound Newcastle paid £27,500 for Albert in
the summer of 1965, pipping fellow suitors Aston Villa.
Named as United's first-ever substitute for the season opener at home to
Nottingham Forest in August 1965, although he wasn't called into action.
Debuting in a 0-1 defeat away to Sheffield Wednesday the following Saturday,
Albert's first goal came in a 1-1 draw at Chelsea the following month.
Reaching double figures in his first season Albert struggled for goals in 1966/67 as United flirted with relegation, but returned to form
with three strikes in the opening four games of the following season.
Cartilage damage sustained in a collision with Coventry City's John Tudor at Highfield Road in January 1968
however sidelined him until the following
August.
After just four more games including a sub outing against Sporting Lisbon in
the Fairs Cup, Albert made a £25,000 switch to Norwich City during February
1969.
Problems with his other cartilage then prompted his retirement from full-time
football in February 1972 after scoring 16 goals in 60 games for the Canaries.
Moving into local league football
in East Anglia, Bennett played for Bury Town, Yarmouth Town, Sprowston Athletic, Carrow,
Quebec Rovers and Taveners.
He later became a prison warder, had a pub near Carrow Road, was
involved in a catering business and even ran a joke shop on Lowestoft Pier at
one point!
Diagnosed with cancer in 2000, Albert had a successful operation to remove one
lung and was reunited with his old colleagues in 2009 to
commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the Fairs Cup win.
He died in December 2016, aged 72.
Bennett retains a small part in Liverpool folklore following a visit
to Anfield in 1967, as the late
Emlyn Hughes recounted in his autobiography:
"...the first time their winger Albert
Bennett tried to go past me, I just grabbed him around the waist and fell over
with him and rolled around on the track.
“The crowd howled
with laughter and the newspaper that evening christened me ‘Crazy
Horse’. The nickname has stuck with me ever since.”

1991
Andros Townsend born, Leytonstone.
(2016)
Newcastle's
third capture of the January 2016 transfer window arrived from Spurs for a
claimed £12m, signing a five and a half year contract at St. James' Park.
In dispute with his previous club after being eased out of their Premier League
XI by Mauricio Pochettino, the England winger retained his fitness by playing
for the U21s ahead of his move to Tyneside.
With
Spurs from the age of eight having previously trained with Arsenal, Andros
became a full-time Academy scholar in 2007 and made his senior debut aged 17 on
loan at Yeovil Town in March 2009.
Subsequent loan moves took him to Leyton Orient, MK Dons and Ipswich Town, with
a senior Spurs debut seeing him net in a 3-0 FA Cup home victory over Charlton
Athletic during 2011.
Further temporary spells at Watford, Millwall,
Leeds United and Birmingham City followed before the first of 50 league
appearances for Spurs (22 starts) in September 2012.
Capped by England U21s, one further loan to fellow Premier League
side QPR came before finally getting a run of games at Spurs in the 2013/14
season.
Impressing sufficiently to earn a first full England cap, he netted against
Montenegro in a 4-1 win at Wembley in October 2013 - winning nine further caps
ahead of his move to Newcastle but missing the 2014 World Cup finals due to an
ankle problem.
Named in Roy Hodgson's initial squad for Euro 2016, Townsend was omitted from the final group that travelled to France.
Four goals in 13 Newcastle games failed to stave off relegation and once United were demoted his exit seemed
inevitable.
However, his decision to join Alan Pardew's Crystal Palace for a reported £15m, stuck in the throat of some fans - and an
undistinguished start to life as a Glazier saw him overlooked internationally.
Attempts to re-sign Andros in January 2017 failed when a clearly reluctant Palace (by now under
the guidance of Sam Allardyce) quoted a prohibitive price.
Summer 2018 brought yet more rumours of a return to Tyneside as Roy
Hodgson took charge of the Eagles but the player opted to remain in South
London.
Running his contract down at Palace, he signed a two
year deal at Everton in July 2021 following the arrival
of his former boss Rafa Benitez at Goodison.
Five goals in his first nine league and cup games seemed to
make the reunion a success, but the Toffees would struggle
badly and jettison Rafa in January 2022.
Initially keeping his place in the squad under incoming boss
Frank Lampard, a knee injury meant that Andros played no
part as Everton stayed up. Playing no part in their relegation escape the following season
he appeared as a trialist with Premier
League-bound Burnley in the summer of 2023.
In the event though Townsend signed for another promoted side in the shape of Luton Town
-
inevitably scored the winner against Newcastle at Kenilworth Road.
The Hatters returned to the
Championship after just one season but Andros remained with
them after signing a long-term deal in early 2024.
However, he had been sold to Turkish side Antalyaspor by
September that year.
He then headed for Thailand, joining Kanchanaburi Power
in August 2025.

A floodlit encounter in Johannesburg ended Newcastle's

months earlier with the same fixture.
The sheer scale of the tour and its length was blamed by
the players for a below-par start to the following
season and future tours were drastically shorter.
