Latest:
Steur it up!

Thursday saw Newcastle confirm their third senior arrival of the close season, paying an undisclosed fee for 18 year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Eredivisie side Ajax.

The Dutch youth international left Ajax's first team training camp on Tuesday after a deal was agreed, flying into Tyneside ahead of his medical.

A fee of around £23m is claimed for Steur, who shares an agency with current Magpies Harvey Barnes, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento plus manager Eddie Howe.

Signing a five year deal, he'll wear squad number 14, vacant since a certain Swedish striker exited last year.

A product of the Ajax academy, Sean made his competitive senior team debut in February 2025, adding 25 appearances last season including three in the Champions League.

He'll become the ninth Dutchman to represent United in the Premier League era, after John Karelse, Patrick Kluivert, Tim Krul, Vurnon Anita, Daryl Janmaat, Georginio Wijnaldum, Jetro Willems and current Magpie Sven Botman.

The last permanent switch from Ajax to Newcastle came in August 2017 when Siem De Jong arrived at SJP - like brother Luuk a Dutch international, but born in Switzerland.

Latest:

Manzambi deal claim

Media outlets in Germany reported on Thursday that Bundesliga side Freiburg had accepted an offer of £51m for midfielder Johan Manzambi from Newcastle.

The 20 year-old is currently at the World Cup Finals with Switzerland, but sat out Tuesday's last 16 tie against Colombia due to a knee injury.

Sky Sports in the UK were more cautious, asserting that an "agreement is close" but not sealed.

Update:
Splitting the G

Update: Thursday brought multiple claims that Bruno had reached verbal agreement with Arsenal over personal terms, but that no formal bid had been made by the Gunners.

Earlier: Almost a year to the day that David Ornstein revealed Liverpool's interest in Alexander Isak, the same journalist took to social media on Wednesday with similar claims about Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes and Arsenal.

As was the case back in 2025, no bid currently exists, but Ornstein asserts the prospective purchasers are ready to offer a deal and the player is keen on the transfer.

Having dealt efficiently and profitably with malcontented pair Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, the onus is now on us to either complete a hat-trick of high value sales or decisively end the speculation and avoid repeating last year's saga.

The loss of the talismanic Brazilian would be a sizeable blow to both Eddie Howe's plans and supporter confidence given how we perform without Bruno, but allowing this window to run down without decisive action one way or the other would be absolutely disastrous.

Bruno's sale would mean that all three captains who lifted silverware at Wembley less than 18 months ago have gone - and while Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles rightly left, a massive chunk of knowledge and experience is being lost.

Younger signings may now be targeted, but a wise old head will also need to be acquired, otherwise the senior player's committee will end up consisting entirely of Dan Burn.

Rather than "Local Hero", "Cruel Summer" may be a more fitting tune when the Magpies next take to the field....

Strasbourg are in the process of appointing a new head coach after Gary O'Neill left last month for Ipswich Town.

2026/27:
TV times

The Premier League have now published the revised fixture schedule for live TV covering August and September, with Newcastle's opening four games all altered:

Sun 23.08.2026 Liverpool (h) 4.30pm Sky
Sat 29.08.2026 Spurs (a) 5.30pm Sky
Sat 05.09.2026 Bournemouth (h) 12.30pm TNT
Mon 14.09.2026 Leeds United (a) 8pm Sky*
Sat 19.09.2026 Hull City (h) 3pm no live UK TV

* if NUFC or LUFC are in the Carabao Cup Third Round and drawn against a club in the Champions League (Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Manchester City or Manchester United), this game will be on Sat 12.09.2026 @ 12.30pm.

Assuming both sides survive the Second Round, a final decision on the PL game will rest on the Third Round draw, which takes place on or around Tue 25.08.2026.

The possible move is because Carabao Cup Third round ties are once again split over two weeks, the first clashing with Matchday 1 in the Champions League Group stage.

PS: Although trains are scheduled to run as usual between Newcastle and London on the day of the Spurs away game, Kings Cross station will be closed the following day.

Update:
Hatters take Harrison

Having featured in the last three senior pre-seasons without going on to make a competitive appearance for Newcastle, Harrison Ashby's Magpie career is drawing to a close.

Now in the final 12 months of his contract at Gallowgate, the 24 year-old full back has agreed a season-long loan switch to League One Luton Town.

Arriving from West Ham in January 2023, a pair of unused substitute selections in the closing two Premier League games of the season followed, before loans of varying effectiveness at Swansea City, QPR and Bradford City.

Ashby is the second current player to leave on loan, after Odysseas Vlachodimos returned to Seville. Confirmation of a further loan switch to Cadiz for Antonio Cordero is awaited.

Update:
Academy scholars announced

Now let's meet the eight who are going to generate.... United's latest intake of school leavers are as follows:

Roman Dowell and George Mair (goalkeepers), Lesecond Yeutembip (defender), Chukwudi Afumuzor, Jayden Kouossu and Alfie Seldon (midfielders), Theo Benjamin and Leon Mukumbira (forwards).

All eight debuted competitively last season for United U18s, four of them previously at other academies (Afumuzor with Portsmouth, Koussou with West Bromwich Albion, Yeutembip with Charlton Athletic and Mukumbira at Peterborough).

New arrivals at Newcastle's academy are awaited, amid claims that deals are in place for defender Kyle Healy-Matthews (formerly with West Ham) and midfielder Kyran Thompson (formerly with Arsenal).

The future of Eli Hall is uncertain following his exit from Ipswich Town, with both United and Spurs linked.

Compo:
Train Wreckers

A century on from the General strike, a headline-grabbing incident in Northumberland during May 1926 is dramatically recalled at Newcastle's Theatre Royal this Sunday (12th).

"The Cramlington Train Wreckers" tells the true story of a group of miners whose attempt to stop a coal train instead saw them inadvertently derail a prestige passenger express - paying a heavy price for their act of sabotage.

The last remaining seats are on sale here

We had two tickets to give away for Sunday's production and asked which passenger service the Train Wreckers derailed. It was of course the Flying Scotsman and the winning entrant was Tony Bush.

PS: Ahead of Sunday's show in Newcastle, there is also a performance in Belfast on Friday.

Incoming:
Baz is a Mag - official

Newcastle announced the signing of left winger Bazoumana Toure from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim on Sunday. A fee of around £43m is reported, although officially undisclosed.

The 20 year-old Ivory Coast international flew to Tyneside with his representatives on Thursday, with social media images then circulating on Friday of him inside SJP.

Toure's participation at the World Cup Finals ended with Ivory Coast's defeat by Norway on Tuesday, having made three appearances (one start and two from the bench).

He moved from Swedes Hammarby to Hoffenheim in January 2025 transfer window, netting five times last season.

Toure becomes the third Ivorian to represent United after Cheick Tiote and the rather less-celebrated loan flop, Seydou Doumbia.

The Magpies previously did business with Hoffenheim in 2019, purchasing Joelinton for a claimed £40m fee.

Toure is reportedly represented by Unique Sports Group, whose other clients include Anthony Gordon, Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw and Lewis Miley.

Update:
Deadline set for L7 Singing section moves

NUFC confirm that they continue to accept requests from current season ticket holders to relocate into a dedicated singing section at the North West Corner of Level 7.

These must be made by Fri 17.07.2026. Details

Update:
Antonio loan looms

Spanish newspaper Marca report that Newcastle have concluded a further loan agreement for Antonio Cordero, who will return to Cadiz for the coming season.

Signed by the Magpies last summer, the 19 year-old winger had an unprofitable loan spell with Belgians KVC Westerlo before agreeing to join Cadiz at the turn of the year.

Following a slow start, Cordero got more pitch time after two changes of coach, ending up as a Cadiz crowd favourite after they avoided relegation from the Spanish second tier.

Outgoing:
Sandro away

Latest: Tonali's transfer was announced on Monday, the player taking to social media with a message for Newcastle fans that appears to be AI-generated.

The reference to his "son born during my time here" in that statement was at least accurate, that birth taking place in a private hospital in London last January, not Tyneside.

Earlier: Newcastle's second high-profile player departure of the summer was sealed on Wednesday, after a deal taking Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur was finalised.

Tonali was spotted flying from Milan to London on Thursday to complete the formalities of his medical.

A fee of £92.5m was agreed plus £7.5m in add-ons, with the 26 year-old Italian international midfielder collecting a weekly wage of £275K - more than double his current earnings and enough to offset the stigma of joining a side who have finished seventeenth in each of the last two seasons...

The first player to swap the Magpies for Cockerels since Moussa Sissoko almost a decade ago, Tonali is set to make his PL home debut for Spurs against United in late August.

Although there was some noise about rumoured interest from Manchester City, that failed to translate into an actual bid, leaving Spurs as the only serious suitors for Tonali.

On that basis the Magpies look to have done good business for a player who, like Anthony Gordon, clearly saw his future away from Tyneside and whose variable displays contributed to our own mediocre domestic campaign. Avoiding another damaging Alexander Isak-style saga is also refreshing.

Inbound recruitment though is where the real interest lies - which will help to answer the imponderable question of whether there's enough of a "project" to prevent Bruno Guimaraes from joining what would become an exodus.

Rightly described as talismanic by one writer in recent days, the monetary value of the 28 year-old who produced on a global stage at the World Cup for Brazil may be at his maximum, but his exit really would trigger alarm bells.

2026/27:

Separate sign-ups are required for each scheme and success can be checked by the appearance of one (or both) on your cup scheme menu. No confirmation email(s) are generated.

2026/27 home cup pricing:

(2025/26 prices were Carabao £20/£25 and FA £30/£35)

Any home Carabao Cup or FA Cup Quarter-final or Semi-Final ties will be subject to as-yet undisclosed prices.

United enter the Carabao Cup in the regionalised Second Round on or around Wed 26.08.2026. They should learn their opponents on or around Mon 10.08.2026.

FA Cup Third Round ties take place on or around Sat 09.01.2027, with the draw on or around Sun 06.12.2026.

U21s:
Moors v Mags

National League North side Spennymoor Town confirm that they will host Newcastle U21s in pre-season, the Magpies visiting Brewery Field on Thursday July 30th at 7pm.

Admission for that game is £10 adults, £5 over 60s/U18s, with advance sales from STFC here or pay at the gate.

The game comes ahead of United U21s staging a training camp at the Pinatar Arena in Spain, after which Robbie Stockdale's side visit St. Mirren for a behind closed doors fixture on Wednesday August 12th at 12.30pm.

More info online here and here

ST holders have 24 hours to apply for away tickets, 24 hours to determine success, then 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.

Only those within the new loyalty point total are eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

PL away ticket prices are unchanged at £30 for both the 2026/27 and 2027/28 seasons.

On This Day in History
10th July

Born Or Died:

1916 Death of Donald Simpson Bell (1911)

From the Football Supporters Federation website, September 2010:

In an era when words such as “hero” and “bravery” are thrown about like confetti it’s all too easy to forget the sacrifices made by previous generations who really did live up to that billing.

This Sunday the life of the only footballer ever to be awarded the Victoria Cross will be remembered at a ceremony in northern France, which pays tribute to him and thousands of other young men who died during the First World War.

Second Lieutenant Donald Simpson Bell lost his life in the Battle of the Somme on July 10th 1916 and was posthumously awarded the VC for an act of unbelievable courage.

Bell played as an amateur with both Crystal Palace and Newcastle United before turning professional in 1913 and signing for Bradford Park Avenue. However, the Harrogate-born left-back’s professional career was to prove a short one as events across Europe spiralled out of control following the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand in July 1914.

Within weeks Germany had declared war on France and Russia and then, on August 4th 1914, Great Britain declared war on Germany. Bell courageously volunteered for service, personally persuading Bradford Park Avenue’s Directors to release him from his contract in the process, and joined the 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment – known today as the Green Howards.

Joining the military as a Corporal in 1914 Bell was sent to France only two days after his wedding in the summer of 1915. By the following summer the opposing forces were caught up in an horrific battle of attrition along the Western Front, the Somme offensive itself is estimated to have cost the British army half a million men. Enemy soldiers were often only yards away and hand-to-hand combat was commonplace.

It was in this environment that Bell and his fellow soldiers were ordered to capture “Horseshoe Trench” but as soon as they left their trenches they were fired upon by a German machine gunner.

“Bell, supported by Corporal Colwill and Private Batey, tried to destroy the gun position,” according to the official Yorkshire Regiment records. “They crept towards it and then suddenly made a dash across open ground. Bell, who was a superb athlete, moved with incredible speed and surprised the occupants of the machine gun position, shot the gunner with his revolver and blew up the remainder with Mills’ bombs. He then threw bombs into the nearby trench, killing over 50 of the enemy.”

Bell’s actions were credited with saving many British soldiers’ lives and earned him the VC for the “most conspicuous bravery”. Writing to his mother he even played down the incident declaring it “the biggest fluke alive”. Tragically, Bell never received the VC which was awarded posthumously as his good fortune ran out only five days later when he was killed in another attack on a German position at Contalmaison.

The spot where he fell was marked with a wooden cross which became Bell’s Redoubt in 2000 – a memorial to the fallen soldier jointly financed by the Green Howards and the Professional Footballers’ Association.

1965 Paul Ferris born, Belfast, Northern Ireland (1981-86)

Left winger signed from Lisburn Juniors in his native Northern Ireland aged 15 in November 1981 - a club that would also provide the Magpies with Aaron Hughes.

Paul was handed his first team chance by Arthur Cox as substitute in a 1-4 reverse against Blackburn Rovers in May 1982 - becoming United's youngest-ever debutant (a record later claimed by Steve Watson).

What proved to be the only senior start of his SJP career came at Charlton later that year but Paul failed to feature at all during the club's 1983/84 promotion campaign.

Following the installation of Jack Charlton as Magpies boss, Ferris fought his way back into contention and netted at SJP during a League Cup tie against Bradford City.

However he had dropped out of the first team picture by late 1984 and was given a free transfer in the summer of 1986, following an extended injury layoff.

Paul had a brief trial with Port Vale and joined local non-league side Gateshead, subsequently going on to play for North Shields, Barrow and Whitley Bay.

Retiring from playing in 1991, Ferris did manage one feat during his career that eluded United - namely a Wembley victory - featuring for Barrow in their 3-0 FA Trophy Final win over Leek Town in 1990.

Studying for a sports science qualification, Paul worked at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital before returning to United in October 1993, as assistant Physio.

Remaining at the club for over a decade, Paul made a major career change and quit to study law, becoming a barrister in 2007.

An unexpected and abortive return to SJP came in April 2008 as part of Alan Shearer's management team. After just eight games and relegation though, his third stint at the Magpies came to an end.

Living on Tyneside, Ferris has a managerial role in a locally-based business promoting the SpeedFlex fitness system.

His first novel, entitled "An Irish Heartbeat" was published during 2011; followed by an insightful autobiography, "The Boy on The Shed" in 2017 and "The Magic in the Tin" in 2022; an unflinching account of Paul's prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment.

"Once upon a Toon"
then followed in 2025, a (mostly) humorous compilation of anecdotes and recollections from Paul's three separate stints at Gallowgate.

1995 Alex Kitchen born, Newcastle.
(2011-13)

Central defender who began his playing career with Winlaton Boys Club and first appeared for United at the age of nine.

A member of the side who qualified for the Nike Premier Cup Finals in 2010, Alex sustained a serious leg injury during 2011.

That sidelined him for nine months, until he returned to debut in the U18s during a 2-1 away win over Wolves in March 2012.

And just days later, Kitchen was back in the Midlands to make his reserve team bow - playing 45 minutes as an inexperienced Magpies XI lost 0-4 at Aston Villa.

With fellow defender Remie Streete missing due to injury, Alex enjoyed a hectic end to the season by appearing regularly for both the U18s and the second string sides.

Six reserve appearances followed during the 2012/13 campaign, but injury ruled him out for a six month period and Kitchen was released by United.

Trials at Bristol City and St. Mirren proved fruitless, but a two year contract was agreed with St.Johnstone following a successful tryout with the Perth club.

However, Alex was released by the Saints two years later without making his senior competitive debut, although selected for first team bench duty several times.

Returning to his native North East, he joined Northern League side Newton Aycliffe before moving on to Consett.

Later working as a male model, Alex is the son of ex-Leyton Orient and Gateshead defender Sam and elder brother of fellow former Newcastle reserve player, Ben.

Death of Jack Charlton (Manager, 1984-85)

Jack died at home in his native Northumberland aged 85. He'd been diagnosed as suffering from dementia.

What Else?

1914 The end of an era at Gallowgate, as striker Albert Shepherd became a Bradford City player at a cost of £1,500.

The 28 year-old had scored 10 goals in 20 games the previous season after returning from serious injury but had failed to recapture his previous potency.

1930
Newcastle completed the signing of Huddersfield Town left wing back Jimmy Naylor for a claimed fee of £4,000.

The 29 year-old had been on the losing side for the Terriers in the FA Cup Final against Arsenal the previous April.

1978
Future United Manager Ossie Ardiles was unveiled by Spurs as their new signing, along with fellow countryman Ricky Villa.

1995 Glasgow Rangers paid Lazio £4.3m for the "individual" talents of former Magpie Paul Gascoigne.

2005 Fansites of Dutch side Den Haag reported that United had agreed a deal to sign their young goalkeeper Tim Krul.

2006 United confirmed that two trialists who had joined pre-season training were both leaving without contract offers.

Defender Michael Morrison returned to Cambridge United while free agent striker Garra Dembele also departed.

Frenchman Dembele later played alongside future Magpie Papiss Cisse for Bundesliga side SC Freiburg.

2007 The Evening Standard claimed:

"Arsenal will today complete the £7.5million signing of Auxerre defender Bakari Sagna and then make a £13m bid for Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins.

"Wenger will try to boost his striker line-up by triggering a £13m buy-out clause in 22-year-old Martins' contract.

The same story re-emerged in 2008 but Martins would eventually depart from SJP in 2009 for German side Wolfsburg.

2011 Unconfirmed reports claimed that Championship side Blackpool had agreed terms to sign Magpies striker Nile Ranger.

However, they proved to a little premature - the workie ticket eventually ended up at Bloomfield Road during 2014.

Steve McClaren's first match as United boss ended in an unimpressive victory at the International Stadium, thanks to a Papiss Cisse spot kick.

There were debuts for Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles, who had both joined the club a year earlier but immediately returned to former club Nottingham Forest on season-long loans.

2016 United's second XI began pre-season with a 3-0 victory at National League North side Bradford Park Avenue.

Ivan Toney gave Peter Beardsley's side an early lead before Sean Longstaff and trialist Tyler Harvey netted after the interval.

The match celebrated the life of Donald Simpson Bell VC, whose former clubs met 100 years to the day that he lost his life at the battle of the Somme (see above).

2018 Following spells with Portland Timbers, Ipswich Town and Peterborough United, former Magpie Steven Taylor signed a one year deal with New Zealand side Wellington Phoenix.

The defender had played against Phoenix on their home ground during United's pre-season visit some four years earlier.

2022 "Longstaff delights black and whites" was our headline, but rather than Sean or Matty, it was Ellis Longstaff (no relation) who thrilled the Gallowgate crowd.

His two tries helped Hull defeat Hull KR on the second day of Rugby League's Magic Weekend - the sixth staging of the event at SJP.

2024
England made it to their second successive Euro final, thanks to a last-gasp 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in Dortmund.

Kieran Trippier kept his starting place but was withdrawn at half time, while Anthony Gordon remained on the bench again.
