Contract:
Lewis commits

Update from NUFC, Monday:

"Newcastle United are delighted to announce that Academy graduate Lewis Miley has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

"The 20-year-old has penned a six-year deal to keep him at St. James' Park until 2032."

Lewis joined the club's Academy aged seven and debuted for the U18s against Burnley in August 2021 - with Jamie in the same line-up.

Winning his first England cap for the U17s in August 2022, within days he'd been blooded at reserve level during an EFL Trophy tie away to Doncaster Rovers.

A hectic few months followed during which Lewis scored his first U21 goals, made two senior appearances in friendly matches and won the Jack Hixon Sport Newcastle award for most promising local youngster.

Introduced late on in United's 5-0 friendly win over Al-Hilal in Riyadh, Miley then had another brief runout in the home victory over Rayo Vallecano days later.

An unused substitute for United's Premier League trip to Bournemouth in February, his 17th birthday in May 2023 brought confirmation of a first professional deal.

His first competitive start came against Manchester City that September and he became Newcastle's youngest ever European player against Borussia Dortmund at 17 years and 191 days.

Lewis also holds the record for the club's  youngest ever Premier League scorer, after netting in the 3-0 home victory over Fulham that December.

Having signed his first professional deal on his 17th birthday in May 2023, he put pen to paper on a long-term contract contract the following January.

The 2024/25 campaign included a maiden England U21 appearance against Spain but he was an unused substitute as Newcastle were victorious in the Carabao Cup Final.

Lewis started regularly in the 2025/26 season in both midfield and at full back,
scoring Premier League, Carabao Cup and Champions League goals during a 19-day spell before Christmas.

However injury then saw him sidelined for 10 weeks, returning in April 2026, only for a training ground injury to end his season prematurely.

Premier League:
Non-event

Fulham  2  Newcastle  0

United's epic season finally ground to a halt at Craven Cottage on Sunday with a disinterested and directionless display sadly summing up much of the last nine months.

A goal in each half by a Fulham side who didn't need to overly exert themselves to collect three points saw the Magpies finish twelfth in the Premier League, their lowest position since the 2020/21 campaign.

The longest season on record concluded on the hottest matchday in living memory, Eddie Howe's players having more drinks breaks than goal attempts as time passed without any hint that a football match might break out.

The hosts were ahead in 20 minutes after Nick Pope was unable to prevent Issa Diop nodding home after Kevin's free kick rebounded back off the Putney End crossbar.

Aside from one Joe Willock effort blocked by Bernd Leno and a timely intervention from Timothy Castagne to prevent Lewis Hall reaching Jacob Murphy's cross, the blue-clad visitors offered absolutely nothing as an attacking unit.

The Cottagers shook off their own slumbers to double their advantage with 10 minutes of the second half remaining, substitute Tom Cairney's fine finish from distance aided by United's collective inability to offer any resistance.

Sandro Tonali featured in the warm-up but was replaced by Willock in the starting line-up, while both Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier remained unused on the bench.

Those on show contributed little and somehow managed to be even more ineffective in the second half after Harvey Barnes, Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa sauntered on.

On wearside meanwhile, the mackems clinched a Europa League place - aided by the generous donation of six points from Barrack Road, on another two occasions this season when we couldn't be bothered to show up.

On the banks of the Thames, Eddie Howe's also-rans fulfilled a fixture rendered meaningless by their inability to compete in the most mundane of Premier League seasons.

The abiding emotion at full time was one of relief, coupled with a genuine apprehension about the direction of a team  who look collectively clueless far too often for comfort.

A season wholly comprised of domestic games may prove to be crucial in what needs to be sizeable squad overhaul: adding another chunk of European ties to the workload of this lot really could have unimaginable consequences.

Eddie Howe said:

"Disappointing performance, not the way we wanted to end the season, that's for sure. I think there was a disjointed view about the team today, in part, we had really limited selection choices today.

"I think it's been a really difficult season: a number of fronts, a number of games were played, obviously the focus came from Europe and the Premier League, that's always a challenge. We haven't dealt with that really well enough in our Premier League season.

"There’s an incredible amount of work to do with the team. We know that that’s not good enough by the standards that we’ve set historically, so there’s lots of work to do.

"It was a disappointing performance from us. For a whole host of reasons we weren't quite at the level we needed to be. There were some promising bits but by and large I think Fulham deserved to win.

"We weren't a big enough goal threat in the game, I don't think we defended with enough solidity, we weren't quite right. We tried to change things numerous times in the game but I think it was more of a mental problem than anything else."

On whether Anthony Gordon will play for the club again:

"I don't know. You can never predict what is going to happen. He obviously goes to the World Cup now so we wish him well."

On his own future:

"I think regardless of who it is
(in the manager's role), unity running through a football club is the most important thing from top to bottom.

"I don’t think anyone connected with us is happy, and we’re not deluded either. I think we’ve always had that, and for me, that’s number one. You need that togetherness and that plan, and the club have been brilliant with me."

Concerning comments from Malick Thiaw, that had certain echoes of his predecessor Jamaal Lascelles:

Of course, we wanted to finish the season in the best way, with a win,” Thiaw said after the Fulham defeat.

“I think today was not a good performance from us, attitude-wise as well. I think we didn't perform.

"We started well into the game in the first 10 minutes, but afterwards, I think it was disappointing.

"If you look at how we performed in the cup games, we played against Man City, who won both of the competitions.

"In the Champions League, I think we did also alright. But in the Premier League, of course, we have to improve. That's not what we want.

"We have to go better for our expectations. We have to think about what we can do better, to have a better season in the Premier League.”

Stats:

Having previously featured in the Champions League this season, Sean Neave made his Premier League debut. He becomes the 276th different player to represent the club in that competition and the 113th to be English-born.

Jacob Murphy made his 150th start for the club in league and cup fixtures.

Eddie Howe's side ended the season with their 17th PL loss in 38 games, their highest number of defeats since Rafa Benitez presided over 18 during the 2017/18 campaign.

Newcastle scored 17 times in their 19 PL away games this season, less than half of their 2023/24 total of 36 and significantly inferior to last season's tally of 28.

That goal total of 17 was the fewest since the 2015/16 relegation season when they scraped up to 12.

19 PL fixtures away from SJP harvested 17 points, via four wins and five draws. That compares unfavourably with last season's final total of 28 points and is the club's lowest top-flight return on the road since 2017/18 (16 points).

The invisible North East "top dogs" trophy went to the red and whites for the first time in a decade. One has to go back to 2015/16 to find when the red and whites (17th) finished above the black and whites (18th).

Championship:
What lies beneath

Hull City defeated Middlesbrough 1-0 in the Championship playoff Final at Wembley on Saturday, Ollie McBurnie's added-time effort meaning that the Tigers join Coventry City and Ipswich Town in the Premier League next season.

Here's a recent history of NUFC visits to the three sides:

Coventry City (last faced in the PL 2000/01)
The Sky Blues have moved from Highfield Road since our most recent top-flight visit, a 2-0 win in September 2000 thanks to goals from Alan Shearer and Kevin Gallacher.

The CBS Arena will become the 62nd different venue to host Newcastle in the PL and they have a 100% record from their two previous visits in other competitions: a 3-2 League Cup win in 2008 and a 4-1 Championship victory in 2009/10.

Ipswich Town (last faced in the PL 2024/25)
United return to Portman Road after a one season absence, having scored four goals without reply there in late 2024 - Jacob Murphy getting one and some Swede the rest.

Hull City (last faced in the PL 2014/15)
A 3-0 victory in January 2015 gave John Carver a first PL win as interim boss, Remy Cabella, Sammy Ameobi and Yoan Gouffran all finding the net against Steve Bruce's Tigers.

The Magpies returned under Rafa Benitez to draw 1-1 in the Carabao Cup Quarter-final during November 2016 before exiting on penalties in ham-fisted style - missing all but one of the four spot kicks they took.

Newcastle's most recent game at the MKM Stadium was a friendly in 2024, winning 2-0. That was their fourth pre-season visit after kickabouts in 2003, 2007 and 2018.

Update:
Youngster on target

Antonio Cordero (Cadiz)
A 3-0 home victory over Leganes on Sunday ensured that Cadiz will remain in La Liga 2 next season, securing their place with one game to spare.

Cordero played the full 90 minutes, rounding off the scoring after winning his one on one with the goalkeeper.

Thanks to Tony Toon for his Spanish updates.

Trevan Sanusi (Lorient):

A 0-2 home loss to Le Havre ended Lorient's Ligue 1 season on
Sunday but our lad wasn't involved.

Travis Hernes (Groningen):
Thursday saw Groningen's Eredivisie season end with a failure to secure a place in the Conference League.

A 0-2 defeat by Ajax in the one-off playoff semi-final saw Travis play 67 minutes in right midfield, substituted with his team trailing 0-2, which is how it ended.

Matt Targett (Middlesbrough):
No fairytale ending for Matt on Saturday, part of the Boro side beaten at Wembley by Hull City in the Championship playoff Final at
Wembley Stadium.

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville):

Despite a 0-1 loss at Celta Vigo on Saturday, Seville were able to preserve their place in La Liga, finishing 13th.

Although there's no provision in the loan deal, it's claimed by Spanish media outlets that Seville now will seek to sign the goalkeeper permanently after avoiding relegation.

Update:
Schar set to stay

Speaking to the media on Friday, Eddie Howe confirmed that a contract extension is in the offing for defender Fabian Schar, who is set to become a free agent this summer.

The 34 year-old former Swiss international made the last of his 251 league and cup appearances against Leeds United last January. Having recovered from an ankle injury, he's currently recuperating after an operation on his foot.

2026/27:
More Murrayfield talk

Update: speaking to the media on Friday, Eddie Howe confirmed that pre-season will begin on July 13th and include a training camp in the Spanish resort of La Manga.

Earlier: Wednesday brought further claims of a pre-season fixture between Newcastle and Everton at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium, possibly on Wednesday August 12th.

A game on that date appeared on the Ticketmaster website before the linked page was taken down - neither club have confirmed the fixture as yet.

A pair of home friendlies over the weekend of August 15th/16th is anticipated, with Serie A side AS Roma and French League Strasbourg among rumoured opponents.

Update:
Saudis seek partners

Following reports by Reuters news that PIF were in talks to dilute its stake in Newcastle United, The Times claiming that up to 25% of their shareholding is in line to be sold.

They write that it "is seen as key in an attempt to get equity into the club before the announcement of a proposed £200m training ground at Woolsington and further talks on a possible new stadium that could cost more than £1bn."

The Times calculate that selling that shareholding could raise £300m+, based on the club's claimed value of £1.5bn and that the investment would be crucial to help fund either a redevelopment of St. James' Park or a brand new stadium.

Update:

Leazes Terrace latest

From NUFC, Tuesday:

Newcastle United has completed the purchase of a significant portion of the historic Leazes Terrace building next to St. James' Park (for a claimed £25m).

The acquisition of a substantial majority of the Grade I listed structure includes its northern, southern and western elevations – including all areas facing the stadium.

It also includes most of its eastern elevation, with a small block of private residences remaining in this part of the building.

This strategic purchase is part of the club's long-term planning as it continues to assess all credible and feasible options for the future of its home stadium.

It provides Newcastle United with greater flexibility and ensures any future decisions support the club's ambitions, as well as its responsibilities to the local community and the city of Newcastle upon Tyne.

The club recognises the building’s historic and architectural significance and is committed to its preservation.

There are no plans to change the current use of Leazes Terrace, which is currently let for student accommodation, and the club will retain the building’s existing property management operator.

The investment to purchase Leazes Terrace does not impact the club's football trading position.

This will doubtless fuel speculation that a redeveloped SJP including an enlarged East Stand could be in the offing, as opposed to a new stadium built elsewhere.

As stated in the press release though, it's only a part purchase and the building retains Grade 1 listed status, which remains a significant barrier to redevelopment regardless of who owns it.

It may be more realistic to see this in the context of the land acquisition around Strawberry Place; a strategic move future-proofing an area bordering SJP for PIF, regardless of whether the football club remain there in the future.

NUFC confirm that the season ticket waiting list for next season is now open, with a minimum of 250 available.

Entry to the waiting list is restricted to members, who can sign up until Sun 31.05.2026.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.

Only those within the new loyalty point total are eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

PL away ticket prices will remain unchanged at £30 for both 2026/27 and 2027/28.

for a rambling explanation of sorts....

On This Day in History
25th May

Born Or Died:

1896 Death of James Logan, 25.
(1895-96)

Centre forward Jimmy died after contracting pneumonia in early April of the same year, as a consequence of playing for his then-current side, Loughborough Town.

Facing Newton Heath (later Manchester United) at their Bank Street ground, Logan and
his team mates played in their own clothes, after Town's kit went missing.

On a rainy afternoon, The Luffs lost 0-2 and were then forced to travel home in their soaking clothes.

Logan caught a cold as a result and although he recovered sufficiently to play again later that season, the Scottish international
later suffered a relapse and passed away.

His last resting place was an unmarked grave in Loughborough Cemetery
, with a headstone belatedly unveiled in 2016 after funds were raised by Notts County supporters (Logan played in their 1894 FA Cup winning side).

He's also commemorated in Loughborough by a road named James Logan Way.

1925 John Newton born, Bishop Auckland.
(1944-46)

Wing half Jackie failed to make the grade at SJP but moved on to Hartlepools United, where he played for over a decade, making over 350 appearances.

Newton netted for 'Pools in their epic FA Cup 3rd round tie of January 1957 when they hosted Manchester United's Busby Babes and fought back from a 0-3 deficit back to 3-3, only to be beaten by a late winner.

17,264 were present at the Victoria Ground, which remains their record attendance.

Jackie later played for Ashington, before returning to live in the Durham village of Willington.

1949 Bob Noble born, Newcastle.
(1965-70)

Growing up in South Gosforth, attending Wallsend Technical School and playing for Howdon Boys Club, Bob signed junior forms for Newcastle in August 1965.

Turning professional two years later, Noble was known as a centre half but played some early reserve games at centre forward, scoring twice on his League debut against West Bromwich Albion in September 1966.

Promoted to the senior side for a friendly at Barnsley in November 1968, Bob made the squad for a Division One trip to Southampton four months later but wasn't on the bench (in the days of just one substitute).

Loaned out to Third Division Barrow the following season, Noble was handed a free transfer by Newcastle in 1970 and signed for Bury ahead of the 1970/71 season.

However Bob's time as a Shaker was soon up and he made a permanent return to Barrow in October 1970 - where he was in the same squad as fellow defender John Rawlinson, later known as Spike Rawlings.

Later spells at Colchester United, Southport and Darlington followed before he tried his luck in Australia, playing for Western Suburbs, Inter Monaro and Griffith City - finally hanging up his boots in 1984.

Later managing a Sports Centre in Sydney, Bob passed away during May 2005.

1985 Demba Ba born, Sevres, France.
(2011-13)

Paris-born striker who played youth football for various minor French sides before trying his luck in England with Barnsley and Watford - failing to win a deal after either trial.

Joining French side Rouen in 2005, Demba moved on to Belgian outfit Mouscron in 2006 and in an eventful twelve months, broke his leg but recovered to find form in front of goal and be capped by Senegal.

Signing for Germans Hoffenheim at a cost of £2.5m in 2007, he helped the unfashionable side into the Bundesliga and continued to find the net with regularity.

Hitting a hat trick against Stuttgart in early 2009, a deal was agreed to join Liverpool that summer, only for medical reports to scupper the move (a new deal until 2013 at Hoffenheim followed).

January 2011 saw Ba move to West Ham after a proposed deal to join Stoke City also collapsed on medical grounds, after doubts were again raised over an old knee injury.

Looking to force through a move to England, Ba refused to attend Hoffenheim's winter training camp and flew to London.

While at the Boleyn he managed seven goals but failed to prevent their relegation - and then exercised a contractual option to leave on a free transfer. Being racially abused by a fan at their end-of-season do didn't improve his chances of staying put....

Appearing at SJP in June 2011 for contract talks and a medical, Ba put pen to paper on a three year deal claimed to have cost United £5m in various agent-related "expenses".

And after a sluggish start, he burst into life with a hat trick against Blackburn Rovers at SJP in his sixth competitive outing.

The goals kept on flowing and after a second treble (at Stoke, of all places), Ba signed off with a fine strike at home to Manchester United in the first game of 2012 - before heading off for African Nations Cup duty with Senegal, having netted 15 times.

Returning with national team strike partner Papiss Cisse to United, Ba picked up where he'd left off with the opener against Villa.

However our new number 9 then hogged the goalscoring glory for the rest of that season - Ba enduring a fourteen game scoreless run, although he supplied various assists from a wide role he disliked.

After a close season of departure rumours sparked by Harry Redknapp's revelation of a £7.5m buyout clause, Ba was restored to a central striking role and scored 13 times in just 20 Premier League appearances.

As the January 2013 transfer window drew nearer though, hopes that he would agree a new deal to remain a Magpie receded and  what proved to be his final outing saw Ba net twice in a 3-7 defeat at Arsenal.

Withdrawn from the squad hours before the home meeting with Everton on January 2nd after news of his negotiations with Chelsea was confirmed, Ba moved to Stamford Bridge and promptly netted twice on his debut.

He endured a painful return to SJP a month later, when a stray boot from Fabricio Coloccini broke his nose and saw him substituted before half time in a thrilling game that United won 3-2.

Never a regular starter under Jose Mourinho, claims of a return to Tyneside surfaced in the press, but Demba continued to net when he was given some pitch time.

Toon fans sang his name again, at Anfield in May 2014, reminding the Liverpool faithful of the goal that effectively ended their title hopes when Steven Gerrard slipped over and allowed Ba to score two weeks earlier.

That goal was his fourteenth and last for Chelsea and he joined Turkish side Besiktas  in July 2014 - debuting in the bizarre location of Macclesfield Town's Moss Rose ground in a friendly against German side Mainz.

24 goals in his first season included five in the Europa League, but Besiktas failed to end their wait for a title, finishing third behind champions Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.

Ba joined Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua on a three-year deal in June 2015, scoring 20 goals in 29 league and cup appearances.

However, a badly broken leg sustained in July 2016 sidelined him for six months and he regained fitness with a second spell at Besiktas, joining the Turkish side on loan in January 2017 for the rest of the season.

Demba then joined rivals Göztepe, on a free transfer during January 2018 - linking up with fellow former Magpie Yoan Gouffran.

However, that was a short-lived pairing, with June 2018 bringing a return to China with Shanghai Shenhua - brought in to replace injury victim Obafemi Martins.

By January 2019, Demba was a free agent once again, signing for Istanbul Basaksehir and winning the Super Lig title in 2020.

2021 saw a free agent switch to Swiss side FC Lugano but after only three months he announced his playing retirement.

April 2022 saw Ba become Chairman of the recently-merged US side ASC San Diego.

1986 Yoan Gouffran born, Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, France. (2013-17)

The third arrival at Gallowgate from France during the January 2013 transfer window, striker Gouffran had played at SJP some three months earlier in a Europa League tie that Bordeaux lost 0-3.

Joining Bordeaux from Caen at a cost of €6.5m in 2008, Yoann was in the final six months of his contract when United made their move after losing out to QPR in their attempt to sign Loic Remy from Marseille.

Able to play as a central striker or in a wide role, the former France U21 international had scored 12 goals in the first half of the season when moving to Newcastle in a deal claimed to be between £1.5m and £2.1m.

Goals at Spurs, West Bromwich Albion and vitally, QPR plus a number of industrious performances saw fans warm to Yoan, although issues in adjusting to the pace of the Premier League saw him routinely substituted during games.

Gouffran's second season as a Magpie saw him net six times in the Premier League plus once in the Capital One Cup.

However, a noticeable downturn in form followed Yohan Cabaye's exit in January 2014 and he remained out on the flanks for the rest of the campaign - despite United's chronic lack of goals.

His lack of form continued into the 2014/15 campaign when he netted just twice in 33 appearances, eight from the bench.

And Yoan's contribution to our relegation season was negligible with the last of nine outings in league and cup coming before the arrival of Rafa Benitez in March 2016.

However, it proved to be a different story following relegation, as Gouffran became a cornerstone of United's successful promotion challenge and even made a return to his former striking role.

An effort at Derby County early in the season was his first in over 18 months and he went on to bag seven in all competitions in what was the final year of his current deal.

A contract extension was reportedly offered to him by United but instead Yoan opted to become a free agent before moving on to Turkish Super League side Göztepe.

He signed for Armenian Premier League side Ararat-Armenia in February 2020 who won their second league title in a row.

He announced his playing retirement in October 2021.

1986 There was a first victory for Jack Charlton as Republic of Ireland boss, as his side beat hosts Iceland 2-1 in a friendly match staged in Reykjavik.

The Irish side included Newcastle's John Anderson, along with two future Magpie coaches - Tony Galvin (assistant to Ossie Ardiles) and Chris Hughton.

1998 Peytar Reid's mackems had looked en route to a Premiership return at Wembley, until the Addicks found late equalisers in both normal time and then the added half hour.

Former/future Magpie Lee Clark was then subbed before the game was resolved on penalties, with 'keeper Sasa Ilic equal to a weak effort from the odious Michael Gray.

Sasa celebrates his MBE -

There was to be a sting in the tail though, as this proved to the final appearance that Lionel Perez made for the mackems - ending his time at the club by picking the ball out of his net eleven times in all.

His next club? Newcastle on a free transfer. And they said Kenny Dalglish had no sense of humour....

2001
Goalkeeper Steve Harper agreed a new four year contract at SJP, commenting:

"I am delighted to have agreed a new contract with Newcastle United. Nothing quite beats playing in front of a full house at St James' Park, and I hope to get a chance to stake my claim for a first-team place when the pre-season friendly matches come around in July and then it will be up to the manager."

2002 Ireland played their final World Cup warm-up match, beating "J" League side Sanfrecce Hiroshima. Magpies duo Andy O'Brien and Shay Given featured.

2003 Sir Bobby Robson took to BBC Radio 5 in defence of new signing Lee Bowyer, telling listeners that he'd not taken the decision lightly:

"We had to give it an awful lot of consideration. I've met the boy, I've met his girlfriend and I was very warmed by both of them.

"Lee knows that he made an error, but he needs a second chance. He is obviously aware of what happened, but that's in the past.

"We feel that we can support him and give him guidance. We have a lot of fine players at Newcastle, we have a good squad, we have a lot of good characters and we just think that, once he settles into our situation, he'll turn out to be a fine pro and a fine boy.

"I'm very confident about that. We did wrestle. We knew there was a slight problem in that sense with Lee Bowyer, but the past is the past.

"The boy needs a chance. Many other clubs would have given him that chance, but we've given it to him and I'm sure that the boy will respond and he will be very pleased to be at Newcastle United, and I think that he will have a good long career with us."

Well, he certainly got the wrestle bit right.....

2007 Sir John Hall spoke publicly after having sold Cameron Halls' stake in Newcastle United to Mike Ashley:

"We've a had a few people come to us - quite a few - but many of them weren't the right ones for the club.

"I feel basically Mike Ashley and his team - they're the right ones. He'll take us to, in my view, a new dimension.
(see 2009 below...)

"I'm certain he'll be good for the club or I wouldn't have sold to him. I've talked to him enough to be assured they've got the passion for the club as we all have.

"You can't run a club without being attached to it. You can't run a club without feeling for it because it's about people, it's about the passion of the people. He knows the supporters are passionate.

"They've got to go for the rest of the shares. If they get them, I'm sure they'll invest.

"He's made a takeover bid for the rest of the shares and it's now up to the rest of the directors to decide what to do. Someone like him will probably like control to make the investment."

2009
NUFC MD, Derek Llambias, released this statement the day after relegation:

"Being relegated from the Premier League is a huge disappointment for everyone involved with Newcastle United.

"We are all hurting and I feel desperately sorry for everyone associated with Newcastle United; for Mike, who has invested heavily in the Club, and for all the supporters who have given the team magnificent backing up and down the country all season long.

"Mike and I will sit down with Alan
(Shearer) this week to discuss how the Club moves forward again, and I hope to be able to say more to our supporters later this week."

2014
Having dropped out of his own stag do in Las Vegas following the call-up, Rob Elliot made a senior international bow for Ireland.

The Newcastle 'keeper completed 90 minutes of a 0-0 friendly draw with Turkey in Dublin.

Strip, not stripper

2015 Derby County sacked Steve McClaren after a disastrous end to the season saw them slip from promotion favourites to eighth and miss out on the playoffs.

One win in nine games after Christmas and just a single success in the final five games followed the emergence of interest in him from Newcastle - who remained intent on securing him, especially now that compensation was no longer an issue.

2016
On the anniversary of his Champions League Final victory with Liverpool, Rafa Benitez confirmed he would ignore the relegation break clause in his Newcastle contract and honour the three year deal agreed just over two months earlier.

Rafa returned to Tyneside from his home on the Wirral and was then unveiled (again) in a press conference at SJP.

2022 Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff signed a three year contract extension to remain at Gallowgate, just weeks before he would have become a free agent.

2024
Manchester United's 2-1 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup Final dashed hopes of European qualification for Eddie Howe's Magpies.

Victory gave the eighth-placed Red Devils a place in the Europa League, pushing sixth-placed Chelsea into the Conference League and leaving seventh-placed Newcastle empty-handed.

Newcastle rounded off their trophy-winning season by claiming a place in the Champions League - thanks in no small part to the match-winning efforts of Manchester United.

The Red Devils were on course to set a new club record of just six home league wins in a season, but Ruben Amorim's mob rode their luck before scoring twice to inflict a priceless defeat on Aston Villa.

At Gallowgate meanwhile, the Magpies were inflicting cruelty on their fans in the form of a shapeless, aimless performance that helped a certain wearside custodian keep a clean sheet - our shoddiness as pivotal as his proficiency....
