Update:
Victor pursuit claimed

Having wrapped up the signing of Ewen Jaouen, Newcastle have now reportedly turned their attentions to the CA Osasuna winger Victor Munoz.

The right-footed 22 year-old predominantly plays on the left and is seen as a replacement for Anthony Gordon.

Munoz is currently with the Spanish squad in North America for the World Cup Finals and said to be available with a £34.5m release clause.

Under contract until 2030, he joined Osasuna from Real Madrid last summer. Spanish news outlets confirm that his former employers retain part ownership in him as well as a buyback option, requiring their involvement in negotiations.

Update:
Mag Ewen - official

Newcastle confirmed their first senior signing of the close season on Wednesday, completing the transfer of Reims goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen for a claimed £18.5m.

Standing at 6ft 6in, the 20 year-old Parisian flew into Newcastle on Monday, before completing the formalities of his move on Tuesday.

A fluent English speaker, Jaouen made 34 appearances last season for the Ligue 2 side, keeping 15 clean sheets.

Winning his first
U21 international cap against Switzerland in November 2025, Ewen began his career with Guingamp. Switching to Reims in 2023, a senior debut followed while on loan at Rodez during 2024.

Urchins appoint Rob

The latest former Magpie to take on a role in the National League is Robert Lee, who returns to his boyhood club Hornchurch as their Director of Football.

Lee's appointment follows the recent arrivals of Lee Clark at Hartlepool United, Rob Elliot at Carlisle United and Kieron Dyer at Southend United.

Update:
Ashley: twist
in the (re)tail?

From Sky News - from shouting at shops to buying them?

Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group is weighing up a £500m bid for the Metrocentre in Gateshead, underlining the retail tycoon's burgeoning appetite to own some of Britain’s most popular shopping destinations.

Sky News has learnt that Frasers is among the parties considering making offers for the north-east’s biggest shopping centre, which boasted 16 million visitors last year.

Once part of Intu, the retail property group which collapsed into administration in 2020 after amassing £4.5bn in debt, the Metrocentre remains the UK’s biggest regional shopping hub outside London.

Majority-owned by Mr Ashley but now run by his son-in-law, Michael Murray, the company - which owns Sports Direct and a broad portfolio of other retail brands - has a market valuation of £3.3bn.

If Frasers did buy the Metrocentre, it would mark a return on a greater scale to the region where Mr Ashley had a 14-year stint as the owner of Newcastle United.

Frasers Group declined to comment.

2026/27:
Everton (n) confirmed

Newcastle are to visit Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium as part  of their pre-season programme, facing Everton.

The Magpies and Toffees meet on Wednesday August 12th at 5.15pm with a
ll ticket sales via Ticketmaster.

As NUFC aren't selling tickets direct, there's no loyalty point requirement and no point will be issued to attendees.

Prices ranged from
£35 to £75 for adults plus booking fees of up to £13 - an incredible uplift in cost compared to the £25 tickets at Celtic last July.

While outrageous, the pricing is little shock to anyone attending the Premier League Summer Series of games featuring Newcastle in the USA during 2023.

That was also handled by Ticketmaster, with the cheapest ticket for United's games against Aston Villa (in Philadelphia) and Chelsea (in Atlanta) £49 when including booking fees.

There has been an inevitable backlash from fans unhappy at paying the equivalent of Champions League ticket prices, the line "from £35" factually correct but grossly misleading.

Although not administering this game (but presumably approving the ticket prices), Newcastle's opportunity to make amends will arise in the form of the home friendlies.

A sensible pricing policy for those games would seem like a small but necessary action after the Lothian shakedown.

The teatime kick-off does mean that it's possible to get back to London Kings Cross via train post-match - which may be handy, given the price of hotels in Edinburgh due to the annual Fringe Festival taking place at the same time.

We're uncertain whether this really is a "dry run" to test the viability of staging future NUFC games at Murrayfield, were SJP to be unavailable due to reconstruction.

Regarding the rest of pre-season, the players will report back around July 13th and include a training camp in the Spanish resort of La Manga.

A pair of home friendlies over the weekend of August 15th/16th are anticipated, with opponents still tbc.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply for away tickets, 24 hours to determine success, then 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.

Only those within the new loyalty point total are eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

PL away ticket prices will remain unchanged at £30 for both 2026/27 and 2027/28.

What's this all about then? Click here
for a rambling explanation of sorts....

On This Day in History
13th June

Born Or Died:

1902 Jack Wilkinson born, Wath upon Dearne, Yorkshire. (1930-32)

Winger signed from Sheffield Wednesday for £3,000 in May 1930, who debuted the following August in a 1-2 reverse to the Owls at Hillsborough.

Losing the fight for the outside left slot to Tommy Lang, "Ginger" moved on to Lincoln City in 1932 for £600 and had a brief period at the mackems at three years later.

Signing for Hull City in 1936, Wilkinson later played for Scunthorpe and had a stint in charge of Newark-based Midland League side Ransome & Marles in 1947.

Jack passed away in April 1969 (some sources claim 1979).

1950 John Connolly born, Barrhead, East Renfrewshire, Scotland. (1978-80)

Left winger acquired from Birmingham City, as Bill McGarry sought to rebuild his Magpies side in preparation for a return to Division One at the first attempt.

Signed as part of the exchange deal that brought Terry Hibbitt back to SJP,
Stewart Barrowclough went the other way.

John came to prominence at St.Johnstone, moving to Everton in 1972 and earning his only full Scotland cap soon after.

A twice-broken leg affected his career though and he moved on to Birmingham City, playing for both Alf Ramsay & Jim Smith.

At SJP, Connnolly was reunited with his ex Saints & Toffees team mate Jim Pearson and tasked with providing service to his former St.Andrews colleague Peter Withe.

However, two stabs at promotion failed and Connolly fell out with McGarry, leaving on a free transfer to Hibernian in 1980 - just before United changed managers.

Within two years he was back in the region, playing for Gateshead with Pearson, Hibbitt and fellow Newcastle old boy John Tudor.

Various positions in non-league followed, including player/manager of Blyth Spartans and spells in charge of Lemington, Whitley Bay and Ashington.

A return to Scotland saw him coaching at Ayr United, taking charge of Queen of the South in 2000.

After four years at Palmerston, Connolly was approached to take over at his old side St.Johnstone, but endured an unhappy year in Perth before being relieved of his duties.

After working as commercial manager for Dundee, John spent time scouting before becoming an SPFL match delegate.

That role involved producing a report on proceedings, including details of any touchline flare-ups or sectarian abuse - which doubtless kept him busy....

1962 David Mitchell born, Glasgow, Scotland. (1991)

A quiz question for you: which ex-Magpie made the most appearances and scored most goals for Australia during his career?

Craig Moore? Mark Viduka? Dave Mitchell.

This globetrotting striker moved down under in his teens and played for Enfield, Adelaide City and Sydney City, before returning to his home town with Glasgow Rangers in 1983.

Spells at Eintracht Frankfurt and Feyenoord then followed, before turning up at Chelsea in 1990, although he rarely featured for them after picking up a serious leg injury.

Borrowed by Newcastle in January 1991 after fellow loan forward Tommy Gaynor returned to Nottingham Forest, Dave scored on his debut at the Gallowgate end against Blackburn Rovers and then appeared in a 2-4 defeat at Brighton five days later.

Struggling for fitness himself however, he returned to Stamford Bridge and United struggled on for two more games before Mark McGhee returned to the side and resumed his partnership with Mick Quinn.

Mitchell meanwhile signed for Swindon Town that summer in a £30K deal and inevitably returned to haunt us, scoring from a seemingly impossible angle at SJP in March 1992 (although Swindon lost 1-3).

After leaving the Robins in 1993, he tried his luck with Turks Altay Izmir before returning to England with Millwall.

1995 then saw him on the move again, appearing for Malaysian side Selangor, before ending his playing days in Australia with Sydney United and Sydney Olympic.

The first Australian to play in top flight football in Scotland, Germany and the Netherlands, he was also the first Socceroo to score in a European club competition.

Internationally, Dave played in the 1981 FIFA World Youth Championship in Australia and the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.

The first of 44 full caps over twelve years, came in 1981 (15 goals) and he claims to have turned down various transfers in Europe after being unable to agree on him continuing to play international football.

Coaching in Australia, he took charge of Sydney Olympic and Parramatta Power before a stint in Malaysia with Sarawak.

After a spell with youth side St Aloysius' College in Sydney, Mitchell became assistant coach at Perth Glory in 2006, taking charge of them the following year.

Mitchell's indirect links with us included recommending Aussie Brett Emerton to his old club Feyenoord - a player United made numerous attempts to sign before he opted to join Blackburn Rovers.

With a part-time position coaching the Australian U23 side, Dave parted company with Glory in 2011, by which time he'd become their Director of Football.

2014 then found him coaching Kedah FC in Malaysia, later becoming a TV pundit for a variety of channels. Mitchell also worked as a scout for Feyenoord.

1976 Marc Ziegler born Blieskastel, Germany. (1999)

Goalkeeper who arrived from on a week-long trial from Stuttgart and played two full friendly games on successive days at Celtic (lost 0-2) and Stoke City (won 2-1).

He was instantly identified as a continental 'keeper when taking to the field at Parkhead in a peaked cap and fisting away the first cross that came near him...

Marc returned to Stuttgart after manager Ruud Gullit opted to acquire John Karelse instead as keeper cover.

Having been with Stuttgart since 1993, he soon moved on to fellow Bundesliga side Armenia Bielefeld but failed to settle and left within a year.

Spells at Bursaspor (Turkey), Wacker Innsbruck (Austria), Austria Vienna (Austria) and Hanover 96 (Germany) followed, before starting to retrace his footsteps with a return to Austria Vienna.

Next up was Saarbrucken (Germany), a second stint at Armenia Bielefield and time with Borussia Dortmund (Germany) before finishing up back at Stuttgart in 2010.

Released in 2013, he then retired from playing and joined the German national coaching set-up, subsequently becoming the DFB's lead goalkeeping co-ordinator.

What Else?

1929 Newcastle sold goalkeeper William Wilson to Millwall for the sum of £700 - a record for the Lions at that time.

Wilson had been United's first choice custodian for three seasons, playing in all 42 league games in 1926/27 when the First Division title came to Gallowgate.

However his final senior game had come the previous October, after which he lost his place to Mick Burns.

1957
Jackie Milburn ended his association with United, moving to Northern Ireland to take up the position of player/manager of Belfast club Linfield.

1996 In the second match of Euro '96 to be held at St.James' Park, 19,107 fans saw Bulgaria overcome Romania thanks to a 3rd minute goal from Hristo Stoichkov (pictured in white below).

Bulgaria: Mihaylov, Kischischev, Ivanov, Tzvetanov, Iordanov, Letchkov (Bontcho Guentchev 90), Iankov, Balakov, Penev (Nasko Sirakov 72), Kostadinov (Borimirov 32), Stoitchkov.

Ref: Peter Mikkelsen (Denmark)

1998 While the future of Newcastle's John Barnes was still undecided, he continued his World Cup TV punditry and received an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

2001 Everton's Francis Jeffers made it clear to and United that he would not be moving to SJP - although his favoured transfer to Arsenal was still some way off.

2002 The race for Rivaldo's signature continued, Newcastle one of a dozen clubs interested in signing the Brazilian striker from Barcelona, according to his agent.

2003 The Mirror reported that Newcastle had agreed a £4.5m fee for Spurs full-back Stephen Carr, but that proved to be premature and the Irishman didn't move to Gallowgate for another 14 months.

2005
Newcastle were reportedly close to on signing midfield pair Scott Parker and Emre Belozoglu from Chelsea and Inter Milan respectively. Both deals were duly confirmed early the following month.

2008 Shola Ameobi's move to Ipswich Town was on hold amid speculation that he was unwilling to drop down a division.

NUFC.com match report

2022 48 hours after Magpies Sporting Director Dan Ashworth saw him play for the Dutch U21s against Wales, a deal bringing Sven Botman to SJP looked imminent.

The 22 year-old Lyon central defender was reportedly available for £30m, with Italians AC Milan also interested.

2024 United confirmed their first deal of the transfer window, Lloyd Kelly arriving on a free transfer following the expiration of his Bournemouth contract.

The 25 year-old central defender moved to the Cherries from Bristol City in 2019 while Eddie Howe was in charge.
