Update:
Fab 2027

Tuesday saw Newcastle confirm that they have retained defender Fabian Schar for one further season.

The 34 year-old former Swiss international was due to become a free agent this summer after eight seasons at Gallowgate, but has signed new a 12 month deal.

Schar made the most recent of his 251 league and cup appearances for the Magpies at home to Leeds in January, missing the remainder of the season with an ankle injury followed by surgery on a foot ailment.

PS: The absence of Mark Gillespie from the list of players leaving the club means that he's agreed an extension to remain at Gallowgate for a seventh successive season.

Update:
The departed

The exit of six senior Magpies from SJP is now confirmed, with
Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, Matt Targett, John Ruddy, Max Thompson and Aaron Ramsdale all leaving.

The first-named five become free agents, while Ramsdale returns to former club Southampton after the expiration of his one season loan deal.

The absence of Harrison Ashby and Joe White from the above list looks to confirm that the pair have at least 12 more months on their own contracts.

Meanwhile, seven members of the development squad have been released: goalkeepers Adam Harrison and James Taylor, defenders Ciaran Thompson and Thomas Bryant, midfielders Darren Palmer and Alfie Harrison plus forward Joe Brayson all moving on this summer.

Update:
NUST 2026 survey

The annual Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST) member survey is now online, including questions about ticket sales and distribution, ID checks and the upcoming Murrayfield kickabout amongst other topics.

Members should have received an email with a link to the survey - note that the closing date is next Monday, June 8th at Midnight and there's an extra incentive to respond, in the shape of a prize draw for a signed NUFC shirt.

NB: the survey is restricted to NUST members only, but renewals and new memberships are available for just £1.

Latest:
Midfield exit
confirmed

Update: the permanent departure of Hernes was announced by NUFC on Wednesday.

Earlier: Dutch media outlets report that FC Groningen have exercised the option contained in his loan agreement to permanently sign Newcastle midfielder Travis Hernes.

The 20 year-old Norwegian youth international spent last season on loan at the Eredivisie side but didn't make his senior debut until January - the first of 11 appearances.

Signing a four year contract for an undisclosed fee, Hernes ends an association with United that began when he was acquired from Shrewsbury Town in September 2023.

Following a handful of U21 appearances and a single bench selection in the Premier League, Travis concluded his first season as a Magpie with two senior outings in the friendly matches played in Australia.

Two more friendly appearances followed ahead of the 2024/25 season; returning to the U21s until completing a loan move to Danish side Aab in early 2025.

Further pre-season pitch time with Newcastle's first team followed ahead of his temporary switch to Groningen.

KK
news update

Speaking in Newcastle on Sunday, former Magpie Kevin Keegan confirmed that he's suffering from stage four stomach cancer, but responding well to treatment.

The condition was discovered while undergoing tests following a car accident, prompting the Keegan family to release a statement in January confirming his diagnosis.

Speaking at an event in Kings Lynn on Friday, KK told the Daily Telegraph, "I'm feeling well; I'm nearly through it, it's looking good, really good."

Sunday then saw him return to Tyneside for a show at the Opera House, joined on stage by Peter Beardsley.

Update:
Seat moves end Friday

NUFC confirm that the North West Corner of L7 is to be converted to safe standing ahead of next season, with a capacity of 1,741 places in sections L7C, L7D and L7E.

That follows consultations over improving the atmosphere and recreates the singing section in that part of the ground, disbanded in 2011 due to persistent standing (and their vocal output mocking then-owner Mike Ashley).

The process of relocating existing ST holders runs until this Friday June 5th, with other ST holders also able to move seats in the same time period  - more details here

Update
:
Dalglish diagnosis

Former Newcastle boss Kenny Dalglish has confirmed his own cancer diagnosis, having accidentally revealed the news to his online followers:

"As my inadvertent social media post has indicated, I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well.

"Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand.

"Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected.

"As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves.”

Departure:
Gordon gone: official

Confirmation of Anthony Gordon's move to Barcelona came from both clubs on Friday evening, hours after a press conference was reportedly postponed due to issues finalising the paperwork of his transfer.

In stark contrast to last year's forced sale of Alexander Isak, Gordon's departure looks amicable, with a final interview from him posted on the Newcastle website alongside quotes from Eddie Howe and Ross Wilson.

Gordon's comments include the following:

"I owe this club a lot because, when I arrived, I was quite lost both in life and in football. The club has given me a sense of belonging and a sense of identity. It's allowed me to do what I always thought I could do. It's put me on the biggest stage and allowed me to perform for the shirt.

"Since coming to the club, I feel I've improved a lot on the pitch but this club has played a big part in the person I've become over the last three-and-a-half years.

"It was really important for me to leave this place in a good way because I've loved every single minute of being a part of Newcastle United. This is an incredible club and one that I'll never forget. I'll be a fan for the rest of my life."

Barca Sporting Director Deco successfully concluded negotiations for the player in London, amid abortive approaches from Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

The 25 year-old then left Newcastle by private plane on Thursday morning, landing at El Prat airport before undergoing his medical in Barcelona.

Signing a five year contract at the Nou Camp, Gordon's deal
will be ratified when the window opens on June 15th.

Gordon faced the Catalans three times in the season just ended for Newcastle in the Champions League, netting once - in the 1-2 home loss last September.

Arriving from Everton in the January 2023 transfer window at a claimed cost of £45m, the Toffees inserted a sell-on clause giving them a percentage of any profit Newcastle make from a future transfer.

Update:
Old gold for old boy

Following the expiration of his Newcastle contract, Kieran Trippier is set to join Wolves as they prepare to return to the Championship following their recent relegation.

Assuming that he passes his medical, the 35 year-old former England international defender will sign a two year deal at Molineux with the option of a third season included.

This will be the third time Trippier has played in the second tier, following Championship service with Barnsley and Burnley earlier in his career.

The last player to join Wolves after Magpies service was Mike Williamson back in 2016.

Murrayfield visit:
Everton (n) on sale now

Newcastle have confirmed a pre-season kickabout against fellow Everton at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium.

The Magpies and the Toffees will meet on Wednesday August 12th with a 5.15pm start and a
ll ticket sales are via Ticketmaster. Tickets are now on public sale.

As NUFC aren't selling tickets direct, there's no loyalty point requirement and no point will be issued to attendees.

ST/member pre-sale prices ranged from
£35 to £75 for adults plus booking fees of up to £13 - an incredible uplift in cost compared to the £25 tickets at Celtic last July.

While outrageous, the pricing is little shock to anyone attending the Premier League Summer Series of games featuring Newcastle in the USA during 2023.

That was also handled by Ticketmaster, with the cheapest ticket for United's games against Aston Villa (in Philadelphia) and Chelsea (in Atlanta) £49 when including booking fees.

There has been an inevitable backlash from fans unhappy at paying the equivalent of Champions League ticket prices, the line "from £35" factually correct but grossly misleading.

Although not administering this game (but presumably approving the ticket prices), Newcastle's opportunity to make amends will arise in the form of the home friendlies.

A sensible pricing policy for those games would seem like a small but necessary action after the Lothian shakedown.

The teatime kick-off does mean that it's possible to get back to London Kings Cross via train post-match - which may be handy, given the price of hotels in Edinburgh due to the annual Fringe Festival taking place at the same time.

We're uncertain whether this really is a "dry run" to test the viability of staging future NUFC games at Murrayfield, were SJP to be unavailable due to reconstruction.

Regarding the rest of pre-season, the players will report back around July 13th and include a training camp in the Spanish resort of La Manga.

A pair of home friendlies over the weekend of August 15th/16th are anticipated, with Serie A side AS Roma and French League Strasbourg among rumoured opponents.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are then offered to unsuccessful applicants with a reduced loyalty points total - new applications cannot be made at this time.

Only those within the new loyalty point total are eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

PL away ticket prices will remain unchanged at £30 for both 2026/27 and 2027/28.

On This Day in History
4th June

Born Or Died:

1924 Death of William Bramwell.
(Director, 1895-1924)

1905 David Leighton Davidson
born, Aberdeen. (1930-37)

Centre half who began his playing career at local league side Aberdeen Argyll before moving on to Forfar Athletic.

Acquired by Liverpool in 1928, Davidson was then transferred to Newcastle during January 1930 at a cost of £4,000.

Debuting in a 0-2 defeat at Huddersfield the following month, David kept his place in the side for a 3-5 home loss to Sheffield United the following week but was then confined to reserve team duty until that November.

Displacing Jack Hill in the side, he became a regular starter and played at Wembley in the 1932 FA Cup Final victory over Arsenal.

Transfer-listed by United in March 1935 after losing his place, he remained at the club and earned a recall that September - a month before his FA Cup winner's medal was stolen in a burglary at his home in Monkseaton.

What proved to be his final senior game was at Nottingham Forest in October 1936 and he left Gallowgate the following June - opting to join Hartlepools United and signing forms in his home just as a telegram from rivals Darlington requesting his services arrived.

After just a handful of games though, he was allowed to leave on a free transfer that October and signed for Gateshead.

Developing his business as a chiropodist and masseur, Davidson assisted Forest Hall and then became Monkseaton FC boss in 1948.

Later taking charge of Whitley Bay Athletic and
scouting locally for West Bromwich Albion, David managed Ashington for over a decade from 1955.

(He did verbally agree to join Gateshead in 1960, only to backtrack within 24 hours and remain at Portland Park).

Davidson passed away in
May 1969.

David's son Peter joined Newcastle as an amateur during 1948 and after a spell at the mackems played golf for Northumberland.

The fifth game of United's North American tour saw them in action at Callister Park on a pitch that had hosted a rodeo just a week earlier and was virtually grassless.

Amongst those in attendance was former Magpie George Wilson, who had emigrated to Canada in the 1930s.

Jackie Milburn netted twice and added five more at the same venue against the same opposition just three days later.

By the end of the ten game tour we'd scored 79 goals - and he was responsible for 31.

Following a victory and a draw in their two games staged in Thailand, United moved on to face Brazilian opposition in Hong Kong.

John Tudor's header and a fine long range effort from Tony Green gave the Magpies a half-time lead in the National Stadium.

However, the Magpies then encountered the brilliance of Brazilian legend Pele, who hit a 15 minute hat-trick before being substituted in the 65th minute.

"We might as well have been trying to stop a flash of lightning" bemoaned Frank Clark.

Newcastle's third game in the Japan Cup saw them in the city of Nagoya, facing a side who had qualified for the tournament by winning the previous season's all Japan Championship finals (aka the Emperor's Cup).

The victory meant that United only needed to draw their last game to win the trophy, which was a large blue Jade vase provided by the sponsors, Kirin.

Team: Thomas, Anderson, Wharton, McCreery, Clarke, Carney, Keegan, McDonald, Varadi, McDermott (Martin), Waddle.

1985 Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band brought their "Born in the USA" tour to SJP, playing on a stage built at the Leazes End.

In the first of two gigs on consecutive nights at SJP, a slightly below capacity crowd of 35,000 was in attendance.

1992 International duty for Newcastle's David Kelly, coming off the bench during Ireland's 0-2 friendly defeat by Italy in Foxborough, USA.

1999
Two future Magpies caught the eye for England U21s in a 3-0 victory against Sweden at Huddersfield Town.

Wimbledon striker Carl Cort netted twice for Peter Taylor's side, while Ipswich Town midfielder Kieron Dyer impressed and earned promotion to the full squad.

Dyer soon made his way to SJP for £6m, Cort following for £7m just over a year later.

2003 United duo James Beaumont and Ross Gardner were transfer-listed following a failed action against Academy coaches, Kenny Wharton and Peter Beardsley.

In an unfortunate statement the club announced they were: "delighted with the outcome" and "disappointed that the two players took this course of action."

It went on: "The decision clearly vindicates the support given to Kenny Wharton and Peter Beardsley by the Club."

2005 A bad night for the men in Green, as Ireland surrendered a two-goal lead in Dublin to Israel, who levelled before the interval.

The second half saw the hosts seek a winner in vain, with United's Andy O'Brien sent off in the closing stages - just days before completing a transfer to Pompey.

O'Brien was the victim of some disgraceful play-acting from the Israeli keeper, Dudu Awat, near the end of an enthralling World Cup qualifier which the home side were desperately unlucky not to win.

Shay Given was between the posts, while future Magpie Damien Duff also appeared.

2011 Newcastle 'keeper Tim Krul had a full international debut to remember, keeping a clean sheet as Holland drew 0-0 with Brazil in a friendly match in Goiania.

The 23 year-old managed to frustrate both the hosts and 54,000 Brazilian fans as he confidently completed 90 minutes.

2019
A reshuffle of Newcastle's Academy staff saw Neil Redfearn take permanent charge of the U23s and Shola Ameobi appointed to a new post of loans co-ordinator aka the Loan Arranger...

2023 The seventh staging of the Rugby League Magic Weekend at SJP concluded with three Super League games watched by just over 26,000 fans.

That took the combined attendance for the event at Gallowgate past 450,000.

2025 Spanish side Atletico Madrid were confirmed as United's pre-season friendly opponents at SJP, contesting the Sela Cup over a single match as was the case the previous year.
