Champions League:
Shock of the Nou

Barcelona  7 (seven)  Newcastle  2

Newcastle's Champions League campaign ended in spectacular fashion at the Nou Camp on Wednesday, as a promising display turned pear-shaped before going disastrously wrong after a second half capitulation.

An excellent first period saw Anthony Elanga twice score to wipe out untidy Barcelona goals, but a penalty conceded by Kieran Trippier at the end of added time proved pivotal.

All seven goals were defensive disasters but the four conceded after the break were X-rated for the watching away fans at that end of the ground; Malick Thiaw, Aaron Ramsdale and Jacob Ramsey all found badly wanting.

And possibly worst of all was the loss of Sandro Tonali with what looked like a groin injury ahead of Sunday's derby.

A bright start saw the Magpies take the game to the Catalans but conceded against the run of play when both Thiaw and Lewis Hall lost their footing leaving Raphina to side-foot past Ramsdale in the sixth minute.

But United responded in great fashion with Harvey Barnes doing well to cross the ball for Elanga to slot the ball past Joan Garcia with 15 minutes on the clock.

However, three minutes later a free-kick conceded by Joelinton that saw him booked was clipped into the box and Dan Burn went with Gerard Martin who simply nodded it back to Marc Bernal to finish from close range.

Demoralising as that was, Eddie Howe's side continued to press the hosts and when Yamal's backheel was intercepted, Barnes did well again to cross from the left for Elanga to slam in a second equaliser.

Moments later, claims for a scandalous second yellow card for Joelinton were waved away and Anthony Gordon should have done better at the near post but fired wide.

Elanga was denied a penalty and then in first half added time Yamal failed to hit the target after the ball fell to his feet when Ramsdale saved but the young forward skied his effort.

He was not to be denied two minutes later when a VAR review correctly penalised Trippier for pulling back Raphina and Yamal's spot-kick was strong enough to beat Ramsdale, despite him guessing correctly and getting hands to it.

Trippier was replaced by Tino Livramento for the second half but just six minutes into the second period the tie was effectively over, when Raphina teed up Fermin who had plenty of time to slot the ball past Ramsdale.

2-4 became 2-5  five minutes later when a corner was simply nodded in by Robert Lewandowski and just five minutes further passed before Lewandowski had another - evading Thiaw before hammering home a strong shot.

The final goal was a personal disaster for Ramsey who gifted the ball to Raphina on the edge of his own box and the Brazilian couldn't believe his luck, tucking it into the net.

Thankfully that was the end of the scoring and the referee ended the agony on 90 minutes with no time added on.

Quite where that leaves us ahead of Sunday is anyone's guess but a victory is vital, given that a 20 day period without Newcastle playing follows that  - that's 20 days of transfer and managerial speculation to be chewed over, never mind crowing from the red and whites.

Full post-mortem to follow.

Team: Ramsdale, Trippier (Livramento 46), Thiaw, Burn, Hall, Joelinton (Botman 64), Ramsey, Tonali (Willock 55), Barnes, Elanga (J.Murphy 64), Gordon.
Subs n/u: Pope, Ruddy, Harris, A.Murphy, Neave, Wissa, Woltemade.

Crowd: 56,662. The Newcastle allocation was increased from 2,215 tickets to 2,986 following an increase in the overall capacity of the as-yet unfinished ground.

After the game Eddie Howe said:

"Our defending today was not at the level it was a few days ago at Chelsea. As well as we played in the first half - and I thought we were outstanding in many aspects - there were too many individual errors.

"The two set-plays are unforgivable because you know how good they are in other aspects of their play.

"We're bang on half-time, we should be going in 2-2 with a great feeling and anything is possible.

"As it is, we're going in with a negative feeling
(after the penalty award). Is it a clear and obvious error?

"Maybe it was a bit of a stronger call than our penalty
(Elanga was pushed earlier), but I think it was tough on us for one not to be reversed and that one to be."

"Of course, this is where we want to be.

"As much as today is a harsh scoreline on us and a painful experience, to see the players play as well as they did in the first half and execute 90% of what we wanted was a great feeling, a great sight.

"I don't think that all should be forgotten with the scoreline, as difficult as that is for everyone to see."

On Sunday's derby match:

"It's about making sure we're mentally and physically ready for a huge game for us and the whole city.

"It's a good game for us to go straight into because there's no time for any other thought."

Stats:

United suffered their heaviest-ever defeat in European competition, having never conceded more than four goals during one game previously and never lost by a margin of more than three goals until tonight.

Newcastle endured their biggest margin of defeat since a 0-5 Premier League loss at Manchester City in May 2022.

The last time they conceded seven goals was a 3-7 PL loss at Arsenal in December 2012. In goal for the Gunners that night was Wojciech Szczesny - and the Polish custodian finished tonight's game between the posts for Barcelona.

Anthony Gordon
made his 150th appearance in all competitions for Newcastle.

This was Newcastle's 20th and final competitive cup game of the season (12 in CL, five in CC, 3 in FAC) the most in any season; one more than the 19 in 2004/05 and 2006/07.

This was the seventh meeting of the two clubs, all coming in the Champions League:

Premier League :
Arsenal (a) update

The chances of Newcastle's PL visit to the Emirates Stadium going ahead as scheduled on Sat 25.04.2026 at 5.30pm look to have reduced following the FA Cup Quarter-final draw.

The Gunners landed a last eight visit to Championship club Southampton on Sat 04.04.2026, victory in that ensuring a Semi-final at Wembley for Mikel Arteta's side rather than hosting United on Sat 25.04.2026.

Were that to happen, an alternative midweek date would be needed for our game, notwithstanding possible Champions League involvement for Arsenal as follows:

CLQF1: Tue 07.04.2026 or Wed 08.04.2026
CLQF2: Tue 14.04.2026 or Wed 15.04.2026
CLSF1: Tue 28.04.2026 or Wed 29.04.2026
CLSF2: Tue 05.05.2026 or Wed 06.05.2026

PS: West Ham's progress to FA Cup Quarter-finals means that their PL visit to SJP on Sun 17.05.2026 remains tbc - given that the Cup Final takes place on Sat 16.05.2026.

Premier League
:
Palace (a) date still tbc

Newcastle's PL visit to Selhurst Park remains subject to alteration from the advertised 3pm KO on Sat 11.04.2026.

Were Palace to win their UEFA Conference League 16 tie versus AEK Larnaca they'd play a Quarter-final first leg on Thu 09.04.2026.

The first leg at Selhurst Park ended 0-0, with the second leg in Cyprus this coming Thursday night (19.03.2026).

That would then see their PL home game against the Magpies delayed 24 hours to Sun 12.04.2026 - as has happened for Palace's game against Leeds this weekend*.

(*That's categorised as a PL displaced fixture, meaning that it's a 2pm KO, televised live on Sky Sports. Newcastle's game would be similarly categorised if moved).

Antonio Cordero (Cadiz)

A 2-0 success away at La Liga 2 basement side Mirandes on Friday night got incoming manager Sergio Gonzalez off to a winning start in his second stint at the club.

However Cordero remained among the unused substitutes - which doesn't bode well for his future at Cadiz.

Travis Hernes (Groningen):

Friday saw Groningen play a 1-1 draw at PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie. Travis kept his place in the starting line-up, playing 63 minutes before going off with the score 0-0.

Charlie McArthur (Airdrieonians):

It finished 0-0 at home to Arbroath in the Scottish Championship on Saturday. Defender Charlie completed the full game and collected a caution.

Max Thompson (Ayr United):
Goalkeeper Max kept his place in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Queens Park in the Scottish Championship.

Harrison Ashby/Joe White (Bradford City):

The Bantams lost 0-2 at Wigan Athletic in League One on Saturday, with Joe omitted again and Harrison appearing from the bench on 75 minutes and picking up a booking.

Tyler Jones (Dunston UTS):
The goalkeeper kept his place in the side for Saturday's 2-1 win at Matlock Town in the Northern Premier League and collected a yellow card.

Matt Targett (Middlesbrough):

More promotion jitters for the Teessiders on Saturday, as they were held 1-1 by Bristol City in the Championship. Targett completed another 90 minutes.

Trevan Sanusi (Lorient):

A 2-1 home win over Lens in Ligue 1 on Saturday saw the winger return to the squad as an unused replacement.

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville):

Ahead of his parent club's visit there on Wednesday, the on-loan goalkeeper was in action at the Nou Camp on Sunday, succumbing to a 2-5 loss in La Liga.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are offered to applicants with a reduced loyalty points total. Only those within the new loyalty point total are then eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.
2025/26 CL away tickets are €50 or less.

On This Day in History
19th March

Born Or Died:

1878 Jimmy Howie born, Galston, Scotland.
(1903-10)

"Gentleman Jim" won three First Division titles and one FA Cup while at Newcastle, also appearing in three more FA Cup finals.

Signed from Bristol Rovers at a cost of £300 in May 1903, Jimmy was a vital part of the midfield and a reliable source of goals.

The first of three full Scotland caps came his way in April 1905 against England at Crystal Palace - with fellow Magpies Andy Aitken, Andy McCombie and Peter McWilliam.

Leaving SJP in December 1910, he played for Huddersfield Town before serving both QPR and Middlesbrough as manager.

Jimmy died in January 1963, by which time he was living in the London area and running a tobacconists.

1896 Joe Harris born, Glasgow, Scotland.
(1925-31)

A £750 acquisition from Middlesbrough, Scottish International wing half Joe made his debut away to Liverpool on Christmas Day 1925.

Making nine appearances for Newcastle's First Division Championship-winning side in the 1926/27 season, he established himself further in the starting XI thereafter.

Joining York City in June 1931, he passed away in his native Glasgow just over two years later, following a short illness.

1967 Darren Bradshaw born, Sheffield. (1989-92)

Defender/utility player signed from York City for £10,000 following a loan spell at SJP.

Bradshaw began his career as an apprentice at Sheffield Wednesday but failed to make the grade and was released by the Owls after suffering a broken leg.

Moving on to non-league Matlock Town, a stint at Chesterfield on loan failed to result in a deal with the Spireites, but did lead to him joining the Minstermen.

His displays there made an impression on City boss Bobby Saxton and once he was installed at SJP as assistant to Jim Smith, Bradshaw arrived.

Debuting in a 1-1 draw at Swindon Town in December 1989, Darren was deployed across the back four and also as a holding midfielder.

However he failed to establish himself in the side and although remaining a squad player for Ossie Ardiles, he featured just once under Kevin Keegan.

In the wake of our successful campaign to avoid relegation in 1992 moved on to Peterborough United, making a low-key return to SJP the following January as Posh captain. However he was powerless to prevent a 3-0 win for his former club.

1994 saw Darren join Plymouth Argyle on loan and he left London Road for good later that year, signing for a Blackpool side who were then managed by a certain Sam Allardyce.

After three seasons at Bloomfield Road a free transfer to Rushden & Diamonds, remaining with the club until they made their league bow in 2001 - although an Achilles injury the previous year restricted his first team action.

A brief spell with Stevenage Borough ended with a move nearer to home as Bradshaw signed for Worksop Town and played in the same team as a certain Chris Waddle.

However, a ruptured Achilles tendon in a game at Stocksbridge Park Steels in April 2003 sidelined him for almost a year.

Darren made a playing comeback but was released by the Tigers in 2004, briefly turning out for Belper Town the following season.

1969 Warren Barton born, Stoke Newington. (1995-2002)

"Centre parting" was once the nation's most costly defender and made three appearances for England in 1995 (although his Three Lions debut against Ireland at Lansdowne Road was abandoned due to crowd disturbances).

Raised as an Arsenal fan in Islington and later South Woodford, Barton began his career as a schoolboy at Watford before being released, deemed too small to succeed.

Barton then accepted an offer of a YTS (Youth Training Scheme) at Leyton Orient but was shown the door halfway through his two year stay by then O's boss Frank Clark.

A stint with non-league Leytonstone & Ilford (now Dagenham & Redbridge) followed before a move to Maidstone United in 1989.

Scouted by Newcastle at that point (Ossie Ardiles being in command), Barton opted instead to sign for Wimbledon - who outbid United's offer of £250K by fifty grand.

Five years later we shelled out £4m to capture Barton from the Dons, but not before he'd scored against us in the League Cup.

After an eventful but trophy-free stay at SJP Barton lost his place at right back to Aaron Hughes and was allowed to leave by Bobby Robson in January 2002, at the age of 33.

A move to Derby saw Barton made captain at Pride Park, Rob Lee making a similar move from SJP but the pair failing to keep the Rams in the Premiership.

October 2003 saw him moving on to QPR before an unsuccessful trial with Leicester led to him becoming a Womble again - albeit as coach to the reformed MK Dons.

Finally his career came full circle when he rejoined Dagenham & Redbridge, coaching there while also running the travel agency that he established while a Magpie.

Always conscious of his public image while a Magpie and consistently pro-Newcastle when speaking to the media, Barton has appeared as a pundit on Skysports and Channel 5.

2008 found him in Egypt and India as part of a joint British Council/Premier League initiative to educate overseas coaches.

Emigrating to the USA, Barton became a youth coach for the LA Galaxy and later an advisor to the San Diego Flash and Los Angeles Blues clubs. He also worked as a Premier League commentator for US TV.

1973 Michael Devine born, Cobh, Ireland. (1992)

An Ireland youth international goalkeeper, Mick moved to England as a youngster and spent four years at Middlesbrough.

Appearing as a trialist for United in a 0-2 reserve loss to Sheffield Wednesday during April 1992, Devine wasn't retained and later joined hometown side Cobh Ramblers after briefly playing for Northallerton Town.

Subsequently with fellow League of Ireland sides Waterford and Cork City, he played on Fermoy FC and Cobh Wanderers before retiring during 2018.

In amongst the excitement of their FA Cup campaign, Newcastle recovered from being 0-2 down to claim their first point in four league games.

That game had a 3pm kick-off and at 7pm it was the turn of the Wolves and Newcastle junior sides to play under the Molineux lights, in the second leg of the Northern Intermediate League Cup Final.

2-0 ahead from the first leg at SJP, United trailed 1-3 after the opening 32 minutes.

With no further scoring despite extra time though, the Final ended in a 3-3 draw on aggregate. The trophy was shared, each club holding it for six months.

Paul Gascoigne struck a first half penalty wide of the target after Darren Jackson was bundled over in the box.

And when a Perry Groves header was deemed to have crossed the line it looked like a blank afternoon at Highbury - in stark contrast to the previous season's 1-0 win.

However a fine second half strike from Paul Goddard levelled the scores before Michael O'Neill missed a golden chance to win it.

After a dispiriting defeat at Old Trafford the previous Sunday, United were two behind and in need of a lift as half time approached.

Shola Ameobi then headed in a Scott Parker centre to give Glenn Roeder's side some hope, before Jean-Alain Boumsong then contrived to spurn a great chance to head United level.

Any hopes of a second half revival were extinguished though, when the same player conceded a penalty and saw red after clumsily upending Peter Crouch.

That took our sending off tally for the season to six, match referee Mike Riley having waved three of those red cards.

A lazy display from Alan Pardew's Magpies was suitably punished at the Britannia Stadium.

A baffling 3-5-2 system left Sol Campbell way out of his depth and when Jose Enrique limped off early on, Shane Ferguson filled in. By the time Gutierrez replaced Campbell and United went 4-4-2, they were three down.

The defender took just three minutes of his comeback after 18 months out to due injury by scoring the only goal behind closed doors at City's training ground.
