Update:
More silverware
for Young Mags

Following on from their recent triumph in the Premier League International Tournament, Newcastle's U15 side enjoyed further trophy success over the Easter weekend.

The Toon prospects travelled to the Dutch city of Rotterdam and lifted the Orange Veins Cup after a penalty shootout victory over PSG in the final on Monday.

Four 30 minute group stage games on Sunday saw United win twice and draw twice to finish first in their section and progress to the following day's semi-finals.

They then recovered a 0-1 half time deficit against Borussia Monchengladbach to win 3-1, thanks to late efforts from Charlie Robinson (2) and Daniel Hynd.

That set up a final against PSG that ended 1-1 with Muawiya Ghanem opening the scoring for the black and whites before the French youngsters levelled.

Newcastle then won the penalty shootout that followed, with goalkeeper Lucas Flack making a vital stop.

Premier League:
Fixture updates

Sunday's defeat on penalties to Leeds United ended West Ham's interest in this season's FA Cup at the quarter-final stage - and has implications for Newcastle's PL fixtures.

Now that the Hammers no longer have Wembley on their minds, they'll provide the opposition at St. James' Park when the Magpies play their final home game of the season.

Along with the other PL fixtures, that has a provisional date of Sunday May 17th
, with confirmation of that weekend's schedule due this Wednesday when the TV picks appear.

No PL games will be played on Saturday May 16th to avoid clashing with the
FA Cup Final that day. That was also the case last season, when PL games took place on the Friday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of FA Cup Final weekend*.

* The two Tuesday PL games played were those involving that weekend's FA Cup finalists.

The remainder of United's season now looks like this:

Sun 12.04.2026 Crystal Palace (a) 2pm Sky
Sat 18.04.2026 Bournemouth (h) 3pm no TV

Sat 25.04.2026 Arsenal (a) 5.30pm Sky
Following Arsenal's FA Cup exit on Saturday, the PL advice regarding fixture changes was updated to say that this game remains "subject to participation in UEFA competitions."

Should Arsenal win their Champions League Quarter-final tie on Tue 07.04.2026 and Wed 15.04.2026 against Sporting Lisbon, they'd be in Semi-final first leg action on Tue 28.04.2026 or Wed 29.04.2026.

That PL advice theoretically leaves our Arsenal game subject to further rescheduling at very short notice - although
how a move could benefit the Gunners is open to question.

No similar advice appeared from the PL regarding a change to the other game that weekend that could feature a CL Semi-finalist: Liverpool v Palace at 3pm on Sat 25.04.

Sat 02.05.2026 Brighton (h) 3pm
no TV
Sun 10.05.2026 Nottingham Forest (a) 2pm Sky

Sun 17.05.2026 tbc West Ham (h) 3pm tbc
Confirmed as taking place over the weekend of Sun 17.05.2026, day and kick-off to be confirmed once TV schedule is announced - due this coming Wednesday.

Sun 24.05.2026 Fulham (a) 4pm
All games kick off at 4pm that day - TV schedule to be announced after 17.05.2026 fixtures are completed.

Update:
Tripps away

Saturday brought confirmation from Newcastle that full back Kieran Trippier's current contract at Gallowgate won't be extended and will expire this summer.

Now 35, Trippier became United's first senior signing of the post-Mike Ashley era when making a £12m switch to SJP from Atletico Madrid in early 2022.

He's made 157 appearances in all competitions, pivotal in lifting United from a relegation spot into Carabao Cup winners via a pair of Champions League campaigns.

Trippier quotes:

"The time has come to leave this amazing club after four-and-a-half years. This is where I have felt most at home. It's emotional, and I'm really going to miss it.

"I want to say a massive thank you to the supporters for all the support through the good and the bad times. You've always supported me, always stood by me.

"To my team mates, it's going to be emotional. It's been an amazing journey with you guys. I'm going to miss you all, but to win a trophy with you guys was really, really special - the best of my career.

"And to the manager, Eddie Howe, all the coaching staff and the team behind the scenes, a massive thank you. The gaffer had the trust - twice - to sign me, gave me the opportunity to represent and captain this great club and most importantly, we managed to win a trophy.

"I'm going to miss everyone at the club. Thank you."

Eddie Howe:

"Kieran has been magnificent for us on and off the pitch. From the moment he walked through the door, he has helped to drive standards that have changed the club's trajectory.

"His performances on the pitch have been to the highest level. Building strong partnerships with the players around him. His outstanding technical ability helped elevate the team and his strong crossing ability helped create many goals and chances for his team mates.

"His leadership skills have been invaluable. In difficult moments his experience has proved calming and his drive and will to win has inspired the players to keep pushing forward.

"While we'll be saying goodbye to Kieran shortly, we also know we have a lot left to play for this season, and I know a player of Kieran's character will be giving absolutely everything to end his time here on a high."

Ross Wilson, Newcastle United's sporting director:

"Kieran should be so proud of the contribution he has made to Newcastle United's progress over the last four-and-a-half years.

"I've admired Kieran from a distance for many years, and seeing him up close in recent months has only reinforced the impact he has as a leader, both in the dressing room and on the pitch.

"When the time comes, Kieran will leave with the respect and gratitude of everyone connected with Newcastle United. We wish him every success in whatever comes next."

U21s:
PL2 update

Although their hopes of a top 16 finish and a place in the playoffs rely on results elsewhere, Newcastle U21s have a significant part to play in the race for the PL2 title.

Friday sees them face a Manchester United side at Leigh Sports Village (now known as the Progress with Unity Stadium) with the Red Devils level on points with leaders Chelsea at kick-off, although trailing on goal difference.

Chelsea meanwhile will take on Fulham at Motspur Park - both games kicking off at 7pm.

There's an added edge to the clash of the two Uniteds, with the Red Devils now managed by Adam Lawrence - who was Newcastle U21 boss for a spell earlier in the season.

FAO anyone looking to attend our game at Leigh, admission is by advance ticket only, available online here

The U21s then conclude their PL2 campaign by facing Wolves at Whitley Park on Monday April 13th (7pm).

Update:
Opportunity Knox

Newcastle United have agreed a sponsorship deal with South African sports drink company KNOX, including training ground naming rights and training kit sleeve sponsorship.

From July 1st, the three year deal worth £18m in total sees United's
Darsley Park training ground renamed The KNOX.

Meanwhile the club's teams - men, women and academy - will wear training kit that includes KNOX sleeve branding.

Efforts to secure a main (front of shirt) sponsor for training kit remain ongoing, while news of a shirt sponsor to replace SELA when that deal expires this summer is also awaited.

Update:
Toon in the USA

Newcastle have two representatives in the England U16 squad selected for games in the US state of Florida.

London-born defender Aristide Lesecond Yeutembip* and midfielder Jayden Kouossu who hails from Milan are both named in a 23 man party for games against the USA (April 16th), Argentina (19th) and Mexico (22nd).

* known as Les.

Update:
Loan lads

Matt Targett (Middlesbrough):
Injury meant that Matt missed Monday's 2-2 draw at Swansea City in the Championship.

Harrison Ashby/Joe White (Bradford City):

Harrison made only his second start for the Bantams as a 2-1 win at Wycombe Wanderers boosted their chances of remaining in the League One playoff places.

Fielded at right wing back, he completed 80 minutes at the cost of a booking.

Tyler Jones (Dunston UTS):
The goalkeeper wasn't involved on Monday as Dunston won 3-0 at Newton Aycliffe in the Northern Premier League.

Antonio Cordero (Cadiz)
No pitch time for the on-loan Magpie as Cadiz lost 1-3 at home to Cordoba in La Liga 2 on Saturday.

Charlie McArthur (Airdrieonians):

The defender completed the entirety of Saturday's 4-0 win away to Ross County in the Scottish Championship
.

Max Thompson (Ayr United):
A change of manager and a change of goalkeeper for Ayr on Saturday, Max dropping down to the bench for a 1-1 home draw with Partick Thistle in the Scottish Championship.

Travis Hernes (Groningen):

The midfielder watched Saturday's 2-0 win at Telstar in the Eredivisie from the bench.

Trevan Sanusi (Lorient):

There was no involvement for the winger in Sunday's 1-1 home draw against Paris FC in Ligue 1.

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville):

The goalkeeper kept his place for Sunday's 0-1 defeat away to Real Oviedo in La Liga.

Premier League:
Crystal Palace (a)

Newcastle will return to Premier League action on Sunday, facing the Eagles at Selhurst Park.

It's a 2pm kick-off live on Sky Sports.

Following a 2-0 home success in January, Eddie Howe's side go in search of their first PL win double over Palace since the 2013/14 season.

Team:
Sven Botman is out but Lewis Miley may return. The availability of Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar is tbc.

Joelinton goes into this game on nine PL bookings - if he makes it ten against Palace he'll land a two game ban, but that doesn't happen then the threat will be lifted.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 29/20
The draw 12/5
CPFC win 9/5

Palace's away form remains better than on home territory; winning just three of their fifteen PL games at Selhurst, drawing seven and losing the other five.

Their home scoring record of 14 goals is the second-fewest in the PL, one more than Nottingham Forest.

Update:
Derby abuse: arrest made

From The Northern Echo, Wednesday:

A man has been arrested following reports of racist abuse during March's Tyne-Wear derby.

The incident took place during the match at St James’ Park on March 22.

A 45-year-old man from the Gateshead area was arrested on Tuesday. He was detained on suspicion of a racially-aggravated public order offence and has since been released on bail.

Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida reported the abuse during the second half of the match, prompting referee Anthony Taylor to pause the game.

Detective Inspector Phil Guard of Northumbria Police said: "Racial abuse has absolutely no place in football or in our communities, and we will not tolerate this type of behaviour.

"Following proactive policing enquiries and close partnership working with both clubs and their supporters, a suspect has been arrested.

"They have since been bailed with robust conditions while the investigation continues.

"We will continue to work with clubs, supporters and partner agencies to tackle any form of criminality at football matches."

Newcastle United released a statement condemning the reported abuse, stating: "Our stance is clear – we do not tolerate discrimination of any form.

"We will work with the authorities to fully investigate and will ensure any individuals are identified and held accountable."

Sunderland also offered their support to the player and condemned the incident.

A spokesman said: "We stand with Lutsharel, who has our complete backing, and we commend him for displaying bravery and leadership by reporting this incident to the match officials.

Update:
Record revenues reported

NUFC's financial results for the year to June 2025 were published on Tuesday morning online here

A pre-tax profit was achieved by selling St.James' Park to a PIF subsidiary company, although the land that the stadium sits on remains under the ownership of city Freemen.

The land on which the STACK development stands adjacent to St.James' Park was also sold in a similar fashion.

Club notes accompanying the results claim those changes are part of the process leading towards the decision on whether to rebuild the stadium or move, and that meeting PSR was not a primary motivation for the sale.

That is disputed by some media outlets, who assert that failure to generate funds by some means would have left United vulnerable to PSR breach and possible sanctions.

Update:
Hopkinson on Howe etc.

Speaking to the media, club CEO David Hopkinson said:

On Eddie Howe:

"I don't have a stance on his future. What I can tell you is that the derby loss hurt.

"We take it seriously. There's nothing within us that thinks, 'Well, it's just three points and on we go'. It has resonated.

"I spent a couple of hours in a one-on-one lunch recently with Eddie and we talked through a multitude of things, including that.

"Eddie is our manager. I expect to have a great run to the end of the season here and we will talk about the future when it's time.

"Right now, we're focused on this season's competition."

Responding to questions about whether Howe's future would be decided before next season:

"I would not frame it that way. We are not looking to make a change at the moment. We are not having those conversations. We are still in the midst of our season.

"We are focused on the seven matches we have remaining and not distracting ourselves with speculation about what we may or may not do in the summer.

"All of us have only got so much bandwidth and we are focused on finishing this season strongly.”

Barely six weeks ago, Hopkinson said of Howe that:

"I’m really happy with the job he’s doing."

"
(His job until the end of the season is) to maximise the potential of the squad he’s got.

"We haven’t given him a set target - achieve this, achieve that. He’s a deeply experienced, total professional, he’s going to go as high as we possibly can.

"He applies the same level of intention and attention to every match we play. Look, we haven’t given him a clear target saying ‘deliver this’, he knows what the ambition is and he knows what the target is.

"Eddie Howe is so important to this club and what he’s done here, lifting the club’s first trophy in 70 years with the Carabao Cup last year, is remarkable.

"What he’s doing on the day-to-day, working incredibly hard, has the support of the club and the ownership."

On transfers:

"I wasn’t here for the
(Alexander) Isak situation, but, to me, Isak was a good sale.

"We haven't got an overall strategy with regard to players out, necessarily.

"We think through what players might or might not want to do this summer. But if an Isak-like scenario presents itself again, any player under contract is going to leave on our terms and we're going to maximise the opportunity that might represent for the club.

"Going forward, our strategy is to buy well and sell well. Buying well does not necessarily mean spending the most money. It means working in the marketplace for the players that generate the most value for this club rather than the fee paid for them.

"So there are a multitude of things we need to employ, including developing our own, looking for opportunities in the marketplace and making sure we are maximising our opportunity within the available price we can produce."

On possible big-name departures:

"We are not ready to answer that.

"We can make a box office signing but we might not be able to do that without selling somebody. What I do know is that players that leave this club will need to do so on our terms.

"Our competitors are formidable and they’ve already got a head start on us, but all they’ve got is a head start and we’ve got a tremendous opportunity for growth right in front of us.

"We’ve got to catch these guys.”

PS: questions regarding training ground and stadium plans weren't answered in any meaningful fashion.

Update:
Alex Cropley RIP

The death of former Magpie Alex Cropley has been confirmed. He was 75.

Arriving on Tyneside on loan from Aston Villa in January 1980, the midfielder struggled to influence Newcastle's faltering bid to gain promotion from the Second Division.

Struggling for fitness after several injuries, Cropley made his Magpies debut in a 0-1 loss at Wrexham, keeping his place for a 0-0 home draw against Birmingham City and a 1-3 reverse away to Shrewsbury Town before exiting.

Winning two Scotland caps despite his Aldershot birthplace, Alex began his career at Hibernian in 1969 before joining Arsenal five years later, where he suffered two broken legs.

Sold to Aston Villa in 1976 he was part of their League Cup winning side the following year.

After his brief loan spell at SJP, Cropley returned to Villa Park before a year in Canada with Toronto Blizzard. A brief period with Portsmouth was then truncated by injury.

Returning to Edinburgh, Cropley ran a pub in the Portobello area of the city before becoming a taxi driver.

A dementia diagnosis sadly came in December 2020.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

Regardless of the loyalty point level a game sells out at, to purchase a ticket you must have applied in the initial 24 hour window.

The initial purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division usually get two hours head start.

NB: emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify due to your points total, log on and complete your purchase.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants are offered to applicants with a reduced loyalty points total. Only those within the new loyalty point total are then eligible to buy - even if you had more, your purchase window has already closed.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

PL away tickets remain at £30 for the rest of this season, 2026/27 and 2027/28.

On This Day in History
6th April

Born Or Died:

1961 Peter Jackson born, Bradford.
(1986-88)

A central defender who began his career as an apprentice at Burnley, Peter's move to Bradford City in 1979 led him to make over 300 appearances for the Bantams.

Tragically however, Jackson lifted the Division Three title trophy for City on the day of the fire at Valley Parade in May 1985 that cost the lives of 56 supporters.

The following October saw him feature for City in a League Cup tie at SJP and with Bradford facing financial problems, they accepted a £250K bid from Newcastle for their club captain within weeks.

Jackson made his Magpies debut in a 0-2 loss at Aston Villa in October 1986, marking the occasion by having three stitches inserted in a wound.

A popular figure during his time on Tyneside, Jacko took over from Jeff Clarke alongside Glenn Roeder in central defence and was an ever-present for the rest of that season.

Appearing for most of the 1987/88 season, Peter managed to get himself sent off for fighting with Pompey's Kevin Dillon at SJP.

However he was to have only one outing in our disastrous relegation campaign - the 0-4 opening day loss at Everton.

Losing his place to Kevin Scott after playing just once alongside Andy Thorn, manager Willie McFaul made a £40K profit when he sold Jackson back to Bradford in September of that year - a decision the player made in haste and was to later regret.

Peter later appeared for Huddersfield Town, Chester City and Halifax Town, where he retired from playing during 1997.

Two stints as Huddersfield boss followed (during which he signed goalkeeper Steve Harper on loan from United) and he also worked as a player's agent and TV pundit.

October 2007 saw Peter return to football management at Lincoln City, appointing ex-NUFC team mate Neil McDonald as his assistant (although he quickly moved on a similar role at Leeds United).

A smoker, Jackson was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2008 and underwent radiotherapy treatment - taking leave of absence from the Imps.

After successful treatment he returned to his post, but was sacked in September 2009 following a poor run of results.

Peter then dabbled again in media work and penned a column for the Football League website, before answering the call from Bradford City in February 2011 to take charge, on a week to week contract.

After a poor start to the 2011/12 season though, Jackson offered his resignation and it was accepted at the end of August.

Switching careers, Peter then worked with wife Alison in her own Caremark home care providers service in Calderdale.

2013 then saw the publication of a joint autobiography with Alison, "Living with Jacko, from Touchline to Lifeline."

Always a popular figure on Tyneside, Jacko once described winning the player of the year award at SJP as follows:

"So I am stood at the back of the room and there might be 1,000 people in there and they began the announcements.

"And in third place it was Gascoigne, in second place it was Beardsley and then they say 'Tonight's winner is Peter Jackson'.

"It's probably my biggest honour in football. I've won the Third and Fourth Division Championships but to win Newcastle's player of the season - what an accolade that is."

1965 Andy Walker born, Glasgow, Scotland. (1991)

Striker who began his career at Motherwell in 1984 before joining Celtic in a £350K move ahead of the 1987/88 season and winning a domestic league and cup double.

However his Hoops career tailed off during the following seasons, absent with an eye injury at one point and also falling out with Parkhead boss Liam Brady.

Unable to get a game for Celtic, Andy moved to SJP on loan in September 1991 and debuted soon after in a 1-2 loss at Millwall - although clearly not match fit.

Making no more impression the following week when starting a 2-2 home draw with Derby County, Walker then got another chance following an injury to Mick Quinn.

That came in a home League Cup tie against Crewe Alexandra, but what proved to be his third and final outing ended like the other two though - with him being substituted.

Walker returned to Parkhead and United muddled through with various combinations of Andy Hunt, Steve Howey, David Robinson and even Justin Fashanu before the signing of David Kelly was thankfully completed.

As for Andy, he departed on loan to Third Division Bolton Wanderers made permanent after he rediscovered his scoring touch - before succumbing to a knee injury.

An unlikely return to Celtic in 1994 saw him win two further international caps but leave the hoops again the following year, this time signing for Sheffield United.

Later stints with Hibernian, Raith Rovers, Ayr, Carlisle and Partick followed, with Andy's final games as a professional coming in the colours of Alloa Athletic in 2000.

A career in the media north of the border followed, writing a newspaper column and fronting STV's football coverage before becoming a Sky pundit.

1969 Gary Jones born, Huddersfield
(1991)

Centre forward who began his career with non-league side Rossington Main before joining Doncaster Rovers in 1988.

After two years at Belle Vue, Jones moved on to Grantham Town and Kettering Town, before a prolific season with Boston United resulted in him appearing as a trialist for Newcastle's reserve side in July 1992 - scoring against Brandon United.

Failing to win a deal, Gary remained at York Street for a further season before making a £25,000 move to Southend United.

After three seasons with the Shrimpers that included a loan stint with Lincoln City, Jones joined Notts County and later appeared for Scunthorpe United, Hartlepool United and Halifax Town.

Spells at Nuneaton Borough, Gainsborough Trinity, Hucknall Town, Armthorpe Welfare, Selby Town and Winterton Rangers followed, the latter in a player-coach role.

1977 Gareth McAlindon
born, Hexham.
(1993-95)

Released by Newcastle without making it into the senior side, striker Gareth was on the verge of joining the mackems when boss Mick Buxton was sacked.

Instead he joined a Carlisle United side managed by Mick Wadsworth, completing over half a century of games for the Cumbrians.

Playing for Scarborough during the 1999/00 season, he joined Gateshead and skippered The Tynesiders during three seasons at the International Stadium, during which he became a regular starter in midfield.

Later moves then took McAlindon to Blyth Spartans, Bedlington Terriers, Dunston Fed, Newcastle Benfield and back to Bedlington.

Following a brief stay with Newcastle Blue Star, it was then back into the Northern League at Ryton & Crawcrook, North Shields, Hebburn Town and Newcastle Benfield.

A player/assistant boss role at Benfield came in tandem with Steve Bowey - reverting to a playing role in 2015.

2016 saw him playing for Northern Alliance side Hexham with brother Patrick before joining Heaton Stannington Over-40s.

A return to management came alongside Bowey at Ashington in October 2017 until the pair left Woodhorn Lane in early 2019.

Later coaching Northern League side Newcastle University, Gareth also ran a youth academy, PGS Coaching.

1999 Owen Gallacher born, Newcastle.
(2013-18)

Forward who played for Ryton Blacks, Washington Leopards and Newcastle Schools before joining United's Academy ahead of the 2013/14 season.

The son of former Magpie winger John, Owen opted to represent Scotland and featured for their U16s during 2014.

Called up to Newcastle's U18 side for their opening game of the 2015/16 season - a 0-0 draw at Stoke - Gallacher's first goal at that level came against Derby County in October.

And barely a month later he'd sampled U21 Premier League football, arriving from the bench during a 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion at Whitley Park.

March 2016 then saw Owen carry off the Jack Hixon Trophy at the annual Sport Newcastle Awards, voted as the city's most promising young local footballer.

However, he failed to make a successful transition to reserve team football and was released by United in June 2018.

Featuring as a trialist for Nottingham Forest U23s in the preceding weeks, Gallacher then agreed a professional deal at the Championship side.

Subsequently playing at full back, Owen made a loan move to National League Harrogate Town during January 2020.

Signing a short-term deal with League One side Burton Albion in September 2020, a senior debut followed soon after in a League Cup tie against Aston Villa.

His contract at the Brewers was extended but he left in May 2021 and joined League Two side Crawley Town.

Returning to the North East when loaned to Gateshead the following season, later played for Grimsby Town, Spennymoor Town and Stockton Town.

A depleted Newcastle team (see below) went down by a single goal at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground.

However, only Everton were still in with a chance of catching United who were eight points clear with the Merseysiders still having five games to play. Newcastle just needed a win and a draw from their last two.

1907 While the first team were on duty in Nottingham, 35,829 fans saw England draw 1-1 with Scotland at St. James' Park.

With league postponements for international call-ups yet to become the norm, Colin Veitch and Jackie Rutherford played for England and Peter McWilliam for the Scots.

The visitors took a fourth minute lead via a Bob Crompton own goal, with Middlesbrough's Steve Bloomer levelling after 42 minutes.

Scotland were recorded as playing the game in a strip of "primrose and pink."

Supermac's second half brace brought a welcome end to a seven game winless league sequence that had seen United drop from ninth to sixteenth while FA Cup commitments distracted them.

Some much-needed ship steadying came from this result, after a poor run had seen United slump to fifteenth.

It was a memorable game for some fans behind the goal of Baggies keeper, Tony Godden, who were arrested for directing foul and abusive language at the Albion keeper.

However, as Godden later testified, they were in fact singing the Ghostbusters theme song - at the time, the Baggies were sponsored by an anti-smoking campaign and the logo looked just like the Ghostbusters one.... Humourless coppers strike again.

Newcastle's lingering title hopes ended after what Sir Bobby Robson called "an outrageous tackle" by
Thomas Gravesen on Olivier Bernard was ignored by incompetent referee, Neale Barry.

With the score 1-1 at Goodison Park after Wayne Rooney's opener was cancelled out by Laurent Robert's thunderous strike
, Barry waved by play on after a violent lunge flattened Bernard - his assailant Gravesen already yellow-carded.

Everton went upfield and won a dubious penalty when Jonathan Woodgate made contact with Kevin Campbell.

David Unsworth duly beat Shay Given from 12 yards and that's how it ended, late chances for a second equaliser spurned by Jermaine Jenas and Titus Bramble.

Victory for the third-placed Magpies would have left them just three points behind both Arsenal and Manchester United with six games remaining.
