Goals

19 mins Sean Steur's foul in a central area outside the Gallowgate area was defended by a flimsy two man wall that looked to be moved out of position when the referee drew his white line.

Isaac Price shot from the free kick where Ewen Jaouen seemed to expect a cross. The goalkeeper dived low to his left but was unable to prevent it nestling in the bottom corner of the net.
0-1

39 mins Steur pushed forward in central midfield before sending the ball out to to Amar Dedic on the right hand touchline. He advanced before whipping over a dangerous low centre that was turned home from inside the six yard box by Bazoumana Toure using what looked like his thigh. 1-1

Half time: Magpies 1 Baggies 1

48 mins A goalbound effort from Harvey Barnes was blocked in the box and bounced around with no visiting player able to control or clear. Barnes benefited from following up his own shot when the unattended ball sat up nicely for him to smash into the net from point-blank range past helpless debutant goalkeeper Matt Ingram. 2-1

77 mins A soft handball award saw Lewis Hall give away his second penalty in as many games, Price's second dead ball finish of the tie sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. 2-2

81 mins A fine team-worked move ended with Harvey Barnes firing in his second of the night and Dedic claiming his second assist with a ball from the right. 3-2

Full time: Magpies 3 Baggies 2

We Said

Matthais Jaissle said:

"
Relieved, it’s always the most important thing in a Cup run that you take the result, that’s what we did against a strong opponent.

“I had a chat with the gaffer (James Morrison). They’re doing really well, I think they will play a great role in the Championship.

"But we also responded. It was important we saw character on the pitch, also after the second equaliser we stepped back and straight away we scored, that helped us of course.

"We are happy, an entertaining match for the fans. I think I would have less headache if we had not conceded the penalties (on Sunday and tonight).

"West Brom were a strong opponent, they’re brave and I will follow them now but I’m happy.

On Harvey Barnes:

"
It’s not only goals (that he contributes). As we saw also against Liverpool he was doing a really great job, not only in possession, also out of possession.

“He is disciplined, especially also with the combination with (Lewis) Hall. We’re really pleased, I thanked him after the match, it was important that he scored.”

On Nick Woltemade:

"He was fighting. It's not easy as a single striker. He had a specific job today. Also out of possession he really tried his best, all the effort on the pitch.

"Unfortunately he didn't score, I would have wished that for him because he shows a great commitment, not only in training but also today in the match.

"For us, it is clear that we will always support him and beforehand I've said he is really committed, and if you see him in training, you will see that even more, a really hard worker.

"So we are really pleased - it is just a matter of time before he scores."

On Will Osula:

"
Most likely (he will miss some weeks). Without being too specific there will be more tests done with specialists and we will update you."

On Amar Dedic:

"Amar joined us late but it’s like he’s been here for years."

On new signing Nico Gonzalez:

"We’re really happy to have him now finally here, it was a long fight.

"I’m really happy because we continue our brave way with young lads, talented players and Nico is young but also experienced, so I think this is a perfect fit and combination.

"
He brings a lot of quality into the squad - this is important. We can’t wait to see him on the pitch.”

On his post-match interaction with the referee:

"I don't want to talk straight away after the match with them (referees), but it was one interesting decision just before he whistled. I wanted to let him know that I saw it differently."

They Said

James Morrison said:

"I’m really proud of the lads. We matched Newcastle at times and we caused them a lot of problems at times.
Going to places like Newcastle, you have to manage momentum.

"They came out of the blocks really quickly in the opening ten minutes and we had to get through that period. We grew into the game after that.

"I was a bit disappointed with the timing of the second goal, right at the start of the second half. However, we came back into it, we competed and we played some nice stuff. I’m really happy with the performance.

"Going into the game, I was confident that we could cause them some problems. I gave the players the belief and I showed them that we could go there and cause those problems. I don’t want us to go to places and sit back. I want us to go and impose ourselves and play the game that we’ve been playing and that we’ve been working on.

"Credit to the lads tonight for sticking to our game plan and executing it. The lads were all disappointed in the dressing room after the game, but I told them that nobody should be disappointed with the effort and the quality that they’ve shown tonight.

"It’s a three-game week and our eye was on Saturday (Boro away) as well, but I’m happy with the lads who played tonight. They deserved to play because they work hard every day in training.

"There’s competition, which is what I want. They showed tonight that they’re knocking on the door and that they’re ready to play.

"We can take the confidence and belief from tonight into a huge game on Saturday. I was after a performance to keep that good feeling going and I got it. Now it’s about preparing properly and getting ready physically for Saturday.

"We had an unbelievable level of support tonight. I can’t thank our fans enough. They are certainly playing their part. I want them to stick with us, which I know they will do.”

Stats

Harvey Barnes scored his 31st and 32nd goals in all competitions for Newcastle - and his first in the League Cup. Added to his previous PL, FAC and CL strikes, that makes him the newest member of the squad to net in all four competitions, after Dan Burn and Joelinton.

A debut for Bazoumana Toure made him the third Ivory Coast-born player to appear for the club, after Cheick Tiote and Seydou Doumbia.

There was also a competitive senior bow for Ewen Jaouen, the first French-born goalkeeper ever to represent the Magpies.

This was the third time these two sides have met in the League Cup, all on Tyneside. 1-0 winners during October 1989, Albion returning to Gallowgate in October 2003 to register a 2-1 success.

Their last visit to SJP ended in a 2-1 Premier League home win behind closed doors in December 2020. Albion old boy Jacob Murphy featured for United in both that game and tonight's tie.

Matthias Jaissle won his first game as Newcastle boss at the second attempt, emulating Ruud Gullit and Sir Bobby Robson in the PL era. Messrs Keegan, Dalglish, Souness, Roeder, Allardyce, Hughton and Pardew managed it on their first outing, while it took Steve Bruce three games, Steve McClaren and Eddie Howe four, Joe Kinnear, John Carver and Rafa Benitez five and Alan Shearer six.

Waffle

Matthias Jaissle saw his Newcastle side win for the first time as they beat Championship side West Bromwich Albion at home in the Carabao Cup Second Round on Wednesday.

They had to come from behind however, after Isaac Price had given the Baggies the lead from a free-kick that beat debutant goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from distance.

A debut goal from Bazoumana Toure then restored parity at the break before Harvey Barnes put United ahead - only for Albion to be given a route back into the tie via a dubious penalty award.

Within five minutes though - almost before the thought of a penalty shootout had formed - Barnes struck again to send his side through and preserve their unbeaten start to the season.

Both sides made six changes from their league fixtures the previous Sunday, Albion arriving after winning their opening two Championship games and with one eye on an early-season "six pointer" at Boro three days later - arguably of greater significance than tonight's free hit.

Despite those changes, the visitors looked solid and able to exploit (£50m Spanish-shaped) gap in central midfield that Liverpool had also identified here.

Bazoumana Toure then marked his bow with a maiden strike, equalising six minutes before the break with a close range shot at the Leazes End from Amar Dedic's centre.

A low-key debut for United's Ivorian ended with his replacement by Harvey Barnes at half time - and he immediately made his mark on the tie after the interval.

Barnes put his side ahead within three minutes, following up his own shot via a number of deflections that allowed him to race into the six yard box and hammer the ball home.

A trio of replacements included Yoane Wissa, who instantly posed a threat in stark contrast to Nick Woltemade, who started in the absence of the injured Will Osula but had precious little to show for his 90 minutes leading the line. Given the waywardness of his effort from 12 yards at the World Cup, it's also something of a relief that this tie didn't go to a shootout.

The ovation that Steur received as he departed meanwhile was an acknowledgement of the genuine promise that he shows in possession.

Having made three changes of their own to bring more regular senior players on, the Baggies found a 77th equaliser when Price got his second from the spot after a soft award for handball on Lewis Hall.

Hall then tried to atone for that by joining the attack to smash a shot off the upright, before Barnes centred and Wissa contrived to clear the crossbar from close range.

Parity lasted only four minutes though, until a flowing move ended with former Baggies loanee Barnes providing a precise low finish into the Gallowgate End net. Given that he took nine games last season to get off the mark and ended up scoring 16 times, two in two for Barnes is a good start for a team where the supply of goals isn't certain.

There was time for a few late half-scares and some further tomfoolery from the officials before the final whistle sounded - a home victory still not enough to quell the mass booing of Madley.

A change of coaching staff has also brought alterations to the post-match routine here: the cringe-worthy "Freed from Desire" jettisoned and replaced by Baccara's "Yes Sir, I can boogie." That's a nod to the Jaissle-flavoured chants to that tune audible at pre-season games and on social media.

That then gave way to Joy Division's, "Love Will Tear Us Apart", prompting a rendition of the Barnes song - one of a diminishing number of matchday ditties that remain appropriate after the squad changes during this window. Friday's UEFA draws then saw the Milan one also disappear....

There was no evidence of a dressing room photo afterwards and no "enjoy the game" from the PA beforehand, but most folks seemed to go away happy taking the positives from this display.
