The FA Cup Third Round schedule has now been finalised, with 22 ties
transmitted live in the UK, but Newcastle's home meeting with Bournemouth not among
them.
That leaves it at 3pm on Saturday January 10th.
Once confirmed by NUFC, FA Cup scheme payments are scheduled to be
taken seven days later, with prices set at £30 and £35 depending on
seating area.
Ballot and sale details are awaited.
Premier League:
Wolte-mare
mackems
1 Newcastle 0

The 156th senior
competitive Tyne-wear derby took place on Sunday afternoon in SR5 and
went the way of the team that actually turned up.
Fittingly, a United blunder gifted the hosts victory on an afternoon
when a bemusingly pathetic display from those in blue got what it
merited. Nothing.
It appeared that Eddie Howe had set his side up for a scoreless draw
but Nick Woltemade had other ideas, planting a firm header past
Aaron Ramsdale inside the first minute of the second half.
Quite what the German was attempting is anyone's guess as he met a
cross from the right unopposed in his own area. A deft flick would
have taken it away and a firm header could have conceded a corner
but what he managed was perfect in its execution, leaving Ramsdale
completely stranded.
Woltemade looked suitably distraught but he and his colleagues'
attempts to salvage the situation bordered on desperate and hapless
for the rest of the game, Regis Le Bris' side comfortably absorbing
what was minimal pressure.
The only fight shown by Eddie Howe's side came in the final few
seconds as both sides squared up to each other following Joe
Willock's nothing challenge on Robin Roefs.
It was an apology of a performance from a side that seemingly didn't want to
be there and had absolutely no game plan.
Timid or intimidated, the
outcome was the same - United contributing little to what was an
atrocious game of football, conceding early rather that late in a
half for variety....
In the game of ifs and buts, the own goal provider may not have been
that exact area of his own box had Dan Burn by then not been
sampling the back of an ambulance.
The defender was unable to continue after what looked like a
deliberate knee in the chest as he and Nordi Mukiele both went to
ground just inside the Newcastle half.
The
assailant saw only yellow instead of red, but the Blyth man only
fleetingly continued after treatment and soon left the field for a
hospital assessment of rib damage after he reported breathing
difficulties.
Fabian Schar replaced him in central defence but most of the
problems came at the other end of the pitch where Anthonys Gordon
and Elanga were at their worst, both dribbling the ball
out of play to the home fans' merriment.
A reluctance to take on opponents and try to draw fouls was as
tedious and frustrating as surrendering possession; continually
turning back for an unthreatening pass.
Others severely denting their reputations included Sandro Tonali who
was withdrawn before the hour looking less than match fit and the
goalscorer, who eventually made way for Yoane Wissa in the 75th
minute.
That like-for-like switch was utterly futile, although the number nine almost got
on the end of a deflected cross five minutes after joining the
action.
Fellow substitutes Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes also contributed
very little in the final half hour, while Willock's hopeless shank
into the stand in the closing seconds when well placed spoke
volumes. If Jacob Ramsey cannot find a place in this team, just how
rotten must he be?
Ramsdale stopped mackem substitute Wilson Isidor's fierce near post
drive late on but had an otherwise quiet afternoon.
The last few seconds of confrontation between the two sides saw
Bruno, Willock and Malick Thiaw all cautioned while Isidor was
yellow-carded for them. Granit Xhaka also left the field for treatment to a
cut eye.
Newcastle ended the day 12th in the league and four points behind
their hosts who moved up to seventh.
As meek a derby display as we've served up in living
memory was as unpalatable as it was unfathomable, summed up by the
way it was lost - a joke goal topping a joke display, ensuring
defeat by the most ordinary of opponents.
We may well have other fish to fry this season, but today wasn't
about European advancement or trophy defence.
Despite the pre-game rhetoric from his players, the manager and his
staff singularly failed to organise or inspire the players. They had
one job - and utterly failed to do it.
The meek may well inherit the earth but securing derby day bragging
rights requires rather stouter hearts than this.
Full match report to follow.
Team: Ramsdale, Livramento, Thiaw, Burn (Schar 42), Hall,
L.Miley, Guimaraes, Tonali (Willock 59), Gordon (Barnes 59),
Woltemade (Wissa 75), Elanga (J.Murphy 59).
Subs n/u: Ruddy, A.Murphy, Ramsey, Joelinton.
Booked: Tonali, Guimaraes, Willock, Thiaw.
SMB: Roefs, Mukiele, Ballard, Alderete, Mandava, Xhaka,
Sadiki, Traore (Hume 70), Le Fee, Talbi (Mundle 83), Brobbey (Isidor
70).
Subs n/u: Patterson, Adingra, Geertruida, Mayenda, Neil, Rigg.
Booked: Brobbey, Mukiele, Mandava, Le Fee, Isidor.
Goal: og (Woltemade 46).
Crowd: 47,158. That included 2,528 away fans who suffered in
the upper tier of the North Stand, having made their way there by
club buses and also independently after travel restrictions were
lifted.
Some joined in the minute's applause before kick-off for ex-mackem forward Gary
Rowell who famously scored a hat-trick at SJP in 1979 and whose
death was announced on the eve of the game at the age of 68.
After the game
Eddie Howe said:
"That will sting for a long time. We know our
performance was off what we needed to to be. Not defensively, we
defended well. It was a game of few chances.
"Unfortunately, the one
big moment goes against us, it was a bizarre moment. But we weren’t
good enough to open them up.
"I am disappointed for the supporters
and sorry for our performance, for a lack of goalmouth action and
clinical attacking. It certainly wasn’t a lack of effort.
"But the first 60 minutes I don’t think we posed a threat at all. It
wasn’t the finest day for any of our front players. The openings
were there, with a better decision or pass. The quality was not
there in that phase of the game.
"The changes had a positive impact
but we didn’t work their goalkeeper anywhere near enough. We didn’t
sustain the pressure enough.
"Losing is a horrible feeling and this is painful."
On injury victim Dan Burn:
"(It's) unfortunate for us, we're losing players in one area
of the pitch and our back line is stretched.
"We've got a number of absentees and so to lose another one in
the colossal presence that Dan is, was a big one today.
"I don't know quite how serious it is. It looks like a rib problem.
He's gone to hospital to get them checked. But that was a big blow
for us because Dan's been an ever-present player.”
Referee: Peter Bankes - fourth PL appearance this season in
charge of the Magpies, following the 0-0 draw at Leeds, 2-0 win over
Nottingham Forest and 2-1 win over Fulham.
VAR: Stuart Attwell.
Stats:
Nick Woltemade scored only the second Tyne-wear derby own goal in
the Premier League. The other was by fellow Magpie Demba Ba in
October 2012 - an unfortunate late equaliser from close in at the
other end of this place.
Following the one accredited to Bruno Guimaraes against Bayer
Leverkusen, Woltemade's misadventure meant that Newcastle players
registered own goals in consecutive competitive senior games
- unusual, but not unique.
Similar misfortune befell United during December 2006, when
Steven Taylor put the ball into his own net against Spurs at SJP and
Peter Ramage repeated the feat away to Bolton Wanderers in the next
game (both in the PL).

U21s:
Win or bust for stiffs
Tuesday sees
Newcastle's U21 side conclude their Group D fixtures in this
season's National League Cup, needing to defeat hosts FC Halifax
Town in order to reach the knockout stages at the expense of the
Shaymen.
It's a 7pm start at the Shay and there are no advance ticket
sales, with cash turnstiles only in operation - adults £10, U17s £5
and accompanied U12s free.
The two sides currently sit second and third in the group
respectively, with Halifax on seven points and United six. Boston
United are assured as group winners, leaving one remaining
qualification spot to be decided on Tuesday.
Only a victory in 90 minutes would see Adam Lawrence's Magpies
advance: a draw would earn both sides one point with a further point
for winning the penalty shootout that followed, but Halifax would
still hold on to second spot via their superior goal difference
regardless of the outcome.
This will be the second time that the two sides have met in this
competition, Newcastle recording a 2-1 win last year.
U18s:
Early start for bairns
United's U18 side are also in action on Tuesday, hosting
Portsmouth in the
FA Youth Cup
Third Round.
It's a 6pm kick-off at Whitley Park. Note the
earlier than usual kick-off.
NUFC are yet to publish admission details, but it's assumed this
will be all-pay with cash only taken at the gate and season tickets
not accepted.
Should the scores
be level after 90 minutes, the tie will be settled via 30 minutes of
extra time and then penalties if required.
The victors will enjoy home advantage in the Fourth Round,
hosting Crystal Palace.
U18s:
Boro bairns beaten
Newcastle U18s 2 Boro U18s 1
Newcastle's youngsters bounced back from last weekend's
disappointing defeat at Manchester United to record their fourth
successive home victory, seeing off a disappointing Boro side at
Little Benton on Saturday.
Ahead at the break thanks to a 24th minute shot from Alfie Seldon
that took him on to five goals for the season, the Magpies were then
boosted by a red card for the visitors.
Barely two minutes of the second half had passed when Lucas Harrison
picked up his second booking of the game; United soon taking
advantage of their numerical advantage when Matty Taylor looped a
header home.
The Teesiders gained a belated foothold in the game when former
Magpie junior Will Haslehurst fired past George Mair in the third
minute of time added on, but thankfully had no opportunity to steal
a point before the final whistle.
Team: Mair, Patterson, Durrant, Old (Moran 46), Johnson,
M.Miley, Pinnington, M.Taylor, Hutchison (Lucas 78), O'Donovan
(Wooster 70), Seldon (Mills 62).

Bayer Leverkusen U19s 2 Newcastle U19s 1

Despite an improved display in their sixth and final U19 Youth
League tie on Tuesday,
Newcastle were unable to register their first point of the campaign.
Playing at the Ulrich-Haberland stadium in the shadow of the Bay
Arena, the green-clad Magpies were forced into an unplanned change
before the half hour when full back Thomas Bryant departed on a
stretcher with a leg injury.
Sean Neave then came agonisingly close to opening the scoring two
minutes from the interval, only for his low shot to rebound off a
post with the goalkeeper beaten.
Visiting goalkeeper Roman Dowell won his one v one duel with
Jeremiah Mensah on 45 minutes but was unable to prevent Montrell
Culbreath from registering with a glancing header in the third
minute of time added on.
Leverkusen doubled their advantage seven minutes after the restart
when Ferdinand Pohl shot home, but United gained a foothold in the
game when Kyle Fitzgerald marked his return to the side with an
excellent finish in the 72nd minute.
A vital intervention
from Mensah preserved Bayern's lead nine minutes from the end of
normal time, his goal-line clearance denying Kacey Wooster after he
latched on to Fitzgerald's pull back from the right flank.
Team: Dowell, Shahar, Bryant (Charlton 28), Watts, Moran,

Born Or Died:
1907
George Nevin born, Lintz Colliery, Durham.
(1928-30)
Left back who signed for Newcastle United in 1925 but
failed to break into the first team and returned to local
football.
A second stint at Gallowgate from 1928 proved to be more
successful and he managed half a dozen outings before
moving on to Sheffield Wednesday in 1930.
Again though Nevin struggled to hold down a place and he
joined Manchester United, only to later return to
Hillsborough.
Finally getting a run of games for Burnley, George joined
Lincoln City in 1937 and was on the books of Rochdale when
league football was suspended early in the 1939/40 season
due to the onset of WW2.
After retiring from football, Nevin settled in the
Sheffield area, passing away in 1973.
1929 Ivor Allchurch MBE born,
Swansea.
(1958-62)
Our record signing when joining for £28,000
from Swansea Town in October 1958, Ivor was a crowd
favourite in the four seasons he played at SJP - even if
United suffered the agony of relegation in 1961.
Appearing in the 1958 World Cup Finals for Wales prior to
his arrival at Gallowgate, his 68 caps was a record haul
at the time and led to his nickname of "The Golden
Boy of Welsh football".
United succeeded where Wolves had failed with a £28,000
bid and Ivor's debut came in a 3-1 home victory over
Leicester City in October 1958, scoring twice.
Although well regarded by Newcastle fans, Allchurch played
for the club during a low point in their history and
relegation came at the end of the 1960/61 season.
Leaving United for Cardiff City in August 1962, Ivor was
awarded the MBE four years later, by which time he'd
returned to play for his hometown club once again.
Moving on to Worcester City in 1968, Ivor also played for
Bishoptown, Haverford West and Pontardawe Athletic and was
still turning out on his 50th birthday.
Ivor passed away in 1997 and a statue in his honour was
unveiled outside Swansea City's Liberty Stadium in 2005 -
with a contribution to the costs of construction
forthcoming from Newcastle United.
1944 John Markie born, Bo'ness,
Scotland. (1962-64)
Right half who signed for Newcastle at the
age of 15, having appeared for Scotland Schoolboys.
John was part of United's 1962 FA Youth Cup winning squad
but made only two first team starts, both during the
1963-64 season and both ending in defeats.
Following the arrival of Stan Anderson, Markie left on a
free transfer, signing for Falkirk, serving the Bairns for
over a decade and setting their appearance record.
A switch to Clyde in 1976 was followed by a brief spell at
Stenhousemuir that was curtailed by a leg injury sustained
while playing against Queens Park at Hampden.
Following that Markie joined the Dundee coaching staff and
coached various junior football sides in Tayside, later
scouting for Arbroath.
Away from football, John worked in the petrochemicals
industry at Grangemouth.
1962 Andy Thomas born, Eynesham,
Oxfordshire. (1986-88)
Midfielder signed from Oxford United after
impressed in games against United - notably a League Cup
tie at The Manor Ground in October 1985, when he netted
twice.
Loaned out to both Fulham and Derby County during his time
at Oxford, Andy debuted for the Magpies in a 1-0 home
victory over Wimbledon in October 1986.
He's remembered for a brief golden spell in front of goal
soon after moving to SJP, scoring twice in successive
games against Chelsea, West Ham United and Everton - the
latter in a Full Members Cup tie.
However his second season at SJP was dogged by injury and
Thomas played only four times in the league - what proved
to be his final outing coming away at Portsmouth in May
1988.
Thomas moved on to Bradford City ahead of the 1988/89
season and later played for Plymouth Argyle.
A switch to non-league Thame United and then Oxford City
then saw him take over as manager of the latter, guided
them to the 1995 FA Vase final. He later took charge of
Brackley Town - another side whose home ground is named
St. James Park.
1977 Sylvain Distin born, Bagnolet,
France. (2001-02)
Arriving on loan from PSG with a fine
reputation and a Champions League pedigree, centre half
Distin debuted in the 89th minute of an eventful 4-3 home
win over Manchester United in September 2001 - although
never actually touching the ball.
34 more appearances followed, during which
the left-footer displayed good aerial skill and a fair
turn of pace for a big man.
However, Distin appeared to possess all
the attributes a professional footballer needed, apart
from any shred of loyalty or devotion to the cause.
Rejecting a move to Bolton Wanderers before following
Laurent Robert from Paris to Tyneside, it was thought
Newcastle had first choice on a permanent move, only for
the player to stall on signing - allegedly due to the size
of his wage packet.
That prompted press speculation he
was being hawked to the highest bidder and as the season
concluded, claims were made that among others,
Bolton (again) and Blackburn Rovers were keen.
Ultimately though, Distin joined Kevin
Keegan's newly-promoted Manchester City, claiming
that the fans only knew one side of the story and
Newcastle were at fault for failing to conclude
negotiations to his satisfaction.
That deal was to have ramifications for
United, Sir Bobby Robson pushing through the signing
of Titus Bramble from Ipswich Town to boost his defence.
Distin's home debut the following season came against
Newcastle - although he didn't have much defending to do
on a day when his former side were woeful.
The ex-Magpie endured 90 minutes of sustained abuse from
the travelling contingent at Maine Road that day - one
greedy basket we think they shouted.
Distin exited Manchester City in similarly
bad grace after running his deal down in order to join
Portsmouth in May 2007.
Winning the FA Cup with Pompey in his first season, he
joined Everton in a £5m deal ahead of the 2009/10
campaign and spent six years at Goodison Park.
Making a free transfer move to Premier League newcomers
Bournemouth during July 2015, what proved to be his 17th
and last game for the Cherries came in the final minutes a
3-1 victory over Newcastle at Gallowgate the following
March.
The conclusion of that season then saw Sylvain released
and he then confirmed his retirement. He subsequently
worked as a media pundit.
1997 Louis Johnson born,
Middlesbrough (2014-16)
Striker who was
handed his U18 debut for United during a 2-1 home win over
Bolton during February 2014, agreeing a youth scholarship
that summer.
A regular for the juniors during the following season,
Louis was named on the bench for a first team friendly at
York City in July 2015 - but wasn't called upon.
Appearing for the U18s that season but failing to feature
for the U21s, Johnson was released by United in 2016.
A non-league career then followed at Thornaby, Billingham
Synthonia, Marske United, Guisborough Town and Bishop
Auckland - netting a seven minute treble for the latter
against Tow Law in 2023.
2006 Aidan Harris born, sunderland
(2017-present)

Goalkeeper
who was with Washington United before linking up
with Newcastle's Academy during 2017.
Debuting for the U18s against Manchester City in August
2022, Aidan's reserve bow then followed against Wrexham's
first team in an EFL Trophy tie a year later.
An unexpected promotion to Newcastle's senior side then
came days later - Harris with the U19s for a UEFA Youth
League tie against AC Milan, but added to the bench for
the Champions League tie in the San Siro after Martin
Dubravka took ill.
Selected in the squad for a post-season visit to Australia
in May 2024, Aidan came on as substitute with an
inexperienced XI already trailing 0-4 to the A-League All
Stars in Melbourne.
He signed his first professional contract with the Magpies
that summer.

United
left Anfield pointless having thrown away a shock lead after ex-Red Jonjo
Shelvey fired in a fine opener.
