2025/26:
Barcelona (h)

The Magpies are participating in the Champions League for this fifth time, kicking off their eight game league stage games on Thursday by hosting a Barcelona side who made it to the semi-final stage last season.

The tie takes place one day after the 28th anniversary of the famous 3-2 victory over the Catalans at Gallowgate, with hat-trick hero Tino Asprilla expected to attend.

Kick-off at SJP is 8pm with live coverage on TNT Sports.

The visitors have taken an allocation of just 800 places.

Team: Jacob Ramsey and Yoane Wissa are both out injured, with neither expected to return before the international break in October.

Although still serving a domestic suspension, Anthony Gordon is available for this tie.

Assuming he keeps his place, Nick Pope will complete a century of appearances for United in all competitions.

Newcastle's CL "A list" squad is as follows:

Pope, Ramsdale, Trippier, Botman, Schar, Thiaw, Krafth, Livramento, Burn, Joelinton, Tonali, Willock, Guimaraes, Ramsey, Wissa, Gordon, Barnes, Osula, Elanga, J.Murphy, Woltemade.

That's a 21 man selection - four short of the maximum permitted 25 due to eligibility criteria - and omits both Jamaal Lascelles and John Ruddy.

The "B list" selection doesn't need to submitted to UEFA until the day before each tie and can include an unlimited number of players born after January 1st 2004.

In Newcastle's case, "B list" inclusions can include Lewis Hall, Lewis Miley, Alex Murphy and U21/academy players.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 23/10
The draw 29/10
FCB win 1/1
NUFC to win 1-0 12/1

FCB:
Midfield pair Gavi and Lamine Yamal are predicted to miss out, with defender Alejandro Balde also rated doubtful.

Frenkie de Jong has regained fitness and is back training.

Signed on a season-long loan from Manchester United, Marcus Rashford is no stranger to scoring against us with five goals for the Red Devils - the most recent coming at Wembley in the 2023 Carabao Cup Final defeat.

Ferran Torres is just behind with four strikes against the Magpies while a Manchester City player, including a hat-trick at SJP back in May 2021.

while Raphinha was on target in both of his previous visits to Tyneside with Leeds.

The touchline ban handed out to visiting manager Hansi Flick and his assistant Marcus Sorg has been overturned and both can occupy the away dugout.

Ahead of their visit to Tyneside, they defeated Valencia 6-0 in La Liga on Sunday thanks to braces from Fermin Lopez, Raphina and veteran forward Robert Lewandowski.

Due to delays re-opening the Nou Camp following major building work, that game took place at Barca's 6,000 capacity training ground.

They currently sit second in the table with three wins and a draw from the opening quartet of fixtures.

Toon teens triumph

Liverpool U18s  3  Newcastle U18s  4

Saturday saw Newcastle U18s continue their unbeaten start to the season with an epic victory on Merseyside that left them third in the table behind both Manchester clubs.

The hosts who boasted a 100% record in the league went ahead through Finn Inglethorpe's 29th minute effort but United levelled seven minutes later through Matt Taylor.

Alfie Seldon
then put the visitors ahead seconds after the restart before Kacey Wooster opened up a 3-1 advantage for the Magpies in the 54th minute - both goals created by winger Mo Waddani.

Joe Bradshaw reduced the deficit to one goal in the 68th minute before substitute Scofield Lonmeni beat England youth international goalkeeper George Mair to make it 3-3 with 11 minutes of normal time remaining.

The black and whites weren't finished though and Wooster won it in the 89th minute, ensuring that his side left Kirkby with maximum points for the third successive season.

Team: Mair, Bloomer, Durrant, Old, Moran (Yeutembip 67), Taylor (Pattison 90), Waddani, O'Donovan, Hutchison (Gilligan 90), Wooster, Seldon (Pinnington 67).
Sub n/u: Anderson.

Booked: Bloomer

That's a fine start to a big week for the U18s, who face reigning U19 UEFA Youth League champions Barcelona on Thursday before travelling to U18 Premier League leaders Manchester City on Saturday. City have won four games out of four so far, scoring 19 goals in the process.

NUFC feature here

2021 interview here

2019 interview here

Earlier: NUFC confirm that their search for a CEO has ended with the installation of Toronto-born 54 year-old, David "Hoppy" Hopkinson:

Newcastle United are delighted to announce the appointment of David Hopkinson as the club's new Chief Executive Officer.

David officially joins the club on Friday, 5th September and will undertake a comprehensive handover process supported by outgoing CEO Darren Eales, who steps down from the position for health reasons.

David brings more than 25 years of senior executive leadership and commercial expertise across three countries, delivering results for some of the world's most iconic and valuable sporting organisations.

David joins Newcastle United after serving as President and Chief Operating Officer at Madison Square Garden Sports in the United States, where he led the business operations of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers.

Both are among the most valuable franchises in the National Basketball Association and National Hockey League respectively, and compete at the world-renowned Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Previously, as Global Head of Partnerships at Real Madrid, David served on the executive team as they cemented their place as one of the world's most valuable football clubs.

Earlier, he spent over two decades at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment as Chief Commercial Officer, overseeing commercial activities for the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and the NBA's Toronto Raptors.

David said: "I am incredibly honoured to join Newcastle United at such an exciting time in the club's history.

"This club represents something truly special. It has extraordinary history and heritage, incredibly passionate supporters, and ownership, players and staff who are committed to excellence.

"Having worked with iconic teams across different countries, I understand what it takes to build sustainable success at the highest levels of global sport.

"I greatly admire what has been achieved by the club so far, and I am excited and motivated by what is ahead as we strive to position Newcastle United among the world's elite clubs."

Newcastle United chairman, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, said: "We are delighted to welcome David to Newcastle United.

"David is an outstanding executive whose track record across global sport and entertainment speaks for itself.

"His experience and strategic capabilities will be invaluable as we continue to build on the club's presence locally and grow it globally on and off the pitch.

"David's leadership will be critical as we build upon what we have already achieved since the acquisition towards an exciting future and sustainable success.

"I would like to personally thank Darren Eales for his exceptional work and leadership, as well as his friendship, over the last three years."

Director Jamie Reuben added: "David's arrival as CEO comes at a crucial time for the club and I am confident that he will prove to be an excellent fit for the role.

"He brings a wealth of experience in leadership positions at some of the biggest names in world sport, with an incredibly strong foundation to build upon."

Update:
Barrie Thomas RIP

The death of former Magpie Barrie Thomas has been announced, at the age of 88.

Barrie was a centre forward who worked down the mines before signing for Leicester City, only for national service to halt his progress.

Joining Mansfield Town before moving on to Scunthorpe United in 1959, Thomas was top scorer in the Football League with 30 goals in 22 games when fellow Second Division side Newcastle bid a record £45,000 for him in early 1962.

The Iron opted to cash in and a deal was concluded with John McGuigan also moving from Gallowgate to the Old Showground - while both Leeds United and Manchester United made their interest known.

Debuting in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at St. James' Park, Thomas first found the net in his third game - away at Swansea - and Walter Winterbottom quickly called him up to an England training session, although he failed to make the 1962 World Cup squad.

However, his time at SJP was blighted by injury and criticism from some fans and colleagues and while netting hat tricks against Boro, Plymouth and Rotherham, he failed to fire his side to promotion.

Losing his place to Ron McGarry, Barrie reluctantly returned to Scunthorpe early in 1964. His scoring touch remained despite fitness issues and as Newcastle were celebrating promotion the following May, he netted five as the Iron beat Luton Town 8-1.

Injury ended his playing career at Barnsley, after which he had a spell managing local non-league side Measham Swifts.

The new system is 24/24/48: 24 hours for any ST holders to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to purchase.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Tickets unclaimed by successful applicants within 48 hours are then offered to those unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact those applicants directly.

On This Day in History
16th September

Born Or Died:

1906 Robert Bradley born, Washington.
(1927-29)

Another of United's singletons, Bradley's sole senior outing came at right back in a 1-5 home loss to Leicester in April 1928.

Moving to Gallowgate from Bishop Auckland at a cost of £100 in March 1927, Bob joined Fulham in May 1929 and subsequently played for Tunbridge Wells Rangers.

Signing for Carlisle United in August 1932, Bradley was appointed club captain but passed away suddenly in February 1934, hours after returning from an away game against Chester.

An inquest later concluded that he died of natural causes.

1912 Albert Harris born, Horden, Durham.
(1935-36)

Outside right who had earlier played in the Football League for Hull City before United recruited him from Blackhall Colliery Welfare in March 1935 at a cost of £100.

Despite making a scoring debut against Fulham at SJP in September 1935, Albert struggled to hold down a regular place in the first XI and joined Barnsley in 1936.

He later appeared for Darlington and Scunthorpe United (when known as Scunthorpe & Lindsay United) and settled in Lincolnshire after his playing days ended.

Albert's death was reported in May 1995.

1923 Colin Gibson born, Normanby on Tees. (1948-49)

Right winger signed from Cardiff City at a cost of £15,000 as United prepared for their return to the top-flight.

Having helped the Bluebirds to the Division Three South title, Colin's stint in Division One was less successful however despite his undoubted skill and pace.

Failing to settle on Tyneside, United took the chance to make a £2,500 profit in February 1949 when Aston Villa came calling.

Remaining with the Villans until January 1956, Colin made over 150 appearances and was recognised at both England B and Football League Select level.

Joining Lincoln City, Gibson later returned to the West Midlands with Stourbridge. He died in March 1992.

1953 Paul Barron born, Woolwich, London. (2007-10 coach, 2024 coach)

Arriving on Tyneside in 2007 as part of Sam Allardyce's entourage, Paul acted as first team goalkeeping coach at United, staying in post under Joe Kinnear and Chris Hughton before following the latter down Barrack Road in December 2010.

September 2024 then saw Barron return to Gallowgate just before his 71st birthday, appointed as Academy goalkeeping sessional coach and coach mentor.

A playing career that included spells at Arsenal, Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion and QPR began at Welling United in 1971 and ended there in 1991.

Coaching posts took him back to Loftus Road and The Hawthorns, in addition to Coventry City, Aston Villa, Boro and the Australian national side.

Reunited with former Boro boss Steve McClaren at Nottingham Forest after leaving Newcastle, Paul later joined the staff at Crawley Town.

A subsequent stint in the USA also saw him manage Las Vegas Mobsters and later coach a women's club in Nevada.

Prior to rejoining Newcastle in 2024, Barron had worked in New Zealand at Dunedin-based Green Island.

1957 David McCreery born, Belfast, Northern Ireland. (1982-89)

Northern Ireland international midfielder who more than compensated for his lack of stature with a fiercely combative style.

Crossing the Irish Sea in 1972 to become an Old Trafford apprentice, McCreery signed his first professional contract two years later and was initially fielded as a striker.

110 senior club games between 1974 and 1979 included substitute appearances in both the 1976 and 1977 FA Cup Finals.

Transferred to QPR for 200K in 1979, two years later David joined Tulsa Roughnecks in the North American Soccer League.

October 1982 saw McCreery tempted to Tyneside in a £75K deal - good business for a player who was part of the Northern Ireland side who impressed at the World Cup Finals in Spain a few months earlier.

Debuting in the League Cup at Leeds in the same side as ex-Red Devils team mate Mick Martin, David was a popular figure at SJP during his seven season stay.

His first season was interrupted by a badly gashed leg sustained against Bolton at SJP in January 1983 - an accidental victim of an opponent's stud which caused a cry of pain that was heard across the field.

The 1983/84 campaign was the highpoint of David's time on Tyneside, playing in all but two of United's 42 league games as promotion to Division One was achieved.

And he kicked off United's top flight return by scoring his first goal on the opening day next season, helping new boss Jack Charlton to a 3-2 win at Leicester City.

Repeating that feat in the first game of the 1987/88 season (a 1-3 loss at Spurs), McCreery remained a first team regular until May 1989 when his final appearance came at Old Trafford for a Newcastle side already condemned to relegation.

Briefly with Swedish side Sundsvall and Tulsa in the USA, David then joined Heart of Midlothian in August 1989 and was soon being managed by ex-Manchester United colleague Joe Jordan at Tynecastle.

Later playing for Hartlepool United, Coleraine in Northern Ireland and Carlisle United, McCreery's first managerial role came at Brunton Park in 1992.

Taking charge at Hartlepool two years later, he ended up picking himself in the side as Pools managed to avoid relegation - his last game at Fulham in April 1995.

Internationally, David played 67 times for his country, the first coming against Scotland in May 1976 and the last almost 14 years to the day against Uruguay in 1990 (18 of his caps came whilst a Newcastle player).

Coaching Blyth Spartans for a time, he was involved in the development of MLS football in the USA and acted as European scout for Argentinean side Boca Juniors.

President of local company Weldmore Limited, 2011 saw McCreery return to club management in the unlikely setting of Myanmar (formerly Burma) with Magway.

Appointed coach of the Sabah FA in 2012 (a member state of Malaysia who participate in the Malaysian Premier League), he lasted less than a year and returned to the North East.

2020 then saw him announced as a Vice President of newly-formed club Al Sahel in the United Arab Emirates, although remaining in the UK.

1962 Simon Smith born, Newton Aycliffe.
(1978-82 player, 1993-2004 coach, 2015-22 coach)

Goalkeeper who appeared at reserve and junior level for United, later playing for Whitley Bay and Gateshead - completing over 500 games for the Tynesiders in a decade at the International Stadium.

Arriving at SJP in a coaching role with the Academy during 1993, Simon drilled the first team goalkeepers from 1999 until following Sir Bobby Robson out of the door in 2004, just days after Graeme Souness arrived.

Conducting coaching sessions for the mackems, Carlisle United, Wigan, Hartlepool,  LA Galaxy and the Canadian National Team, Smith subsequently worked for the FA.

Scouting and overseeing the development of goalkeepers at England youth level, Simon also coached the women's national team, and instructed on UEFA coaching courses.

August 2015 saw him make a return to SJP as goalkeeping coach following the departure of Andy Woodman and he survived the demise of Steve McClaren to work alongside successors Rafa Benitez and Steve Bruce.

After less than a year serving Eddie Howe though, Simon's departure from the club was announced in late July 2022.

Away from football, Smith has also coached wicket keepers for the England and Wales Cricket Board, Kent and the National Cricket Academy at Loughborough University.

1967 Death of Sandy Mutch, 82, of which 46 years were spent serving United as player and groundsman. (1922-24)

1975 Death of Johnny Dryden, 67.
(1932-34)

1977 Paul Brayson born, Newcastle.
(1996-98)

One of a long line of players who excelled at junior and reserve team level for United, but failed to make the transition to the first team.

Great things were predicted for the striker and he featured for the seniors ahead of the 1995/96 season, netting at Hartlepool United and Rushden & Diamonds.

Aside from one start in the League Cup that season - partnering Les Ferdinand against Bristol City at SJP - Paul was restricted to second string appearances, where he scored 17 times in league and Senior Cup games.

The abolition of United's reserves did nothing to aid Paul's progress and he joined Swansea City on loan and scored 5 times in 11 appearances.

What proved to be the final season at SJP for Brayson saw him out of the first team picture under Kenny Dalglish, returning as a substitute in a League Cup tie against Hull City at SJP in October 1997.

By the following March he'd joined Reading in a £100K deal along with Jimmy Crawford - linking up again with former Magpies coach Tommy Burns, now Royals manager.

Signing for Cardiff City in 2000 (initially on loan), Brayson also later featured for Cheltenham Town in the Football League.

Moving to non-league Northwich Victoria in 2004, a call-up to the England semi- professional side followed in 2007.

Subsequent spells with Gateshead, York City, Newcastle Blue Star and Durham City followed, before a move to Blyth Spartans in 2009.

Guesting for Bedlington Terriers on a pre-season tour of the USA, Brayson later joined them permanently after a spell with Harrogate Town.

2013 saw Paul join Newcastle Benfield, scoring over 250 goals and also taking charge of the Northern League side.

September 2024 found him managing Benfield and still registered as a player at the age of 47.

Paul's son Joe - also a striker - followed in his father's footsteps at Newcastle's academy, scoring his first U18 goal in August 2023 and has now featured for the U21 side.

1989 Salomon Rondon born, Caracas, Venezuela. (2018-19)

Having sold Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham ahead of the 2018/19 season, Newcastle entered negotiations with relegated West Bromwich Albion over striker Rondon - and agreed a season-long loan swap that saw Dwight Gayle head to the Hawthorns.

The Venezuelan international began his career in Spain with Las Palmas in 2009, moving on to Malaga the following year.

2012 then found him at Russian side Rubin Kazan, switching to Zenit St. Petersburg in early 2014. A claimed £12m move to the Baggies was then made in August 2015.

Scoring nine Premier League goals in his first season, Salomon hit eight in 2016/17 that included a treble against Swansea City.

The 2017/18 season saw him net seven times in the PL, plus three more in FA Cup ties.

Rondon had been a target for Rafa Benitez during previous windows, but his age and future value meant that the club refused to release the necessary funds for a bid.

In the final year of his Albion deal when joining United and with a claimed buyout clause of £16.5m, his parent club then exercised an option for another 12 months after the buyout clause expired.

Lacking match fitness when becoming a Magpie, Salomon made his bow from the bench in the home season opener against Spurs, coming close to a debut strike when his shot deflected off the crossbar.

A first Magpies goal then came in a League Cup tie at Nottingham Forest and 11 Premier League goals followed to help keep United away from relegation.

The cost of a permanent deal - and the lack of any sell-on value - meant that United made no serious effort to retain Rondon and he followed Rafa Benitez out of the door.

Returning to the Hawthorns, he was soon on the move again, reunited with Rafa at Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang during July 2019 for a quoted £17m fee.

Benitez's departure from Dalian saw Rondon loaned to CSKA Moscow and when Rafa was appointed Everton boss he signed Rondon on a free transfer.

Scoring just three times - two in the FA Cup against Boreham Wood - he was used fleetingly by new boss Frank Lampard following the departure of Benitez.

Leaving Goodison in December 2022, Salomon signed for Argentinean side River Plate a month later, moving on to Mexican club Pachuca a year later.

He then joined La Liga side Real Oviedo for a season long loan in July 2025.

1994 Aleksandar Mitrovic born, Smederevo, Serbia. (2015-18)

Serbian international centre forward who became United's second signing of summer 2015 when agreeing a £13m move to SJP from Belgian side Anderlecht.

Beginning his career at Partizan Belgrade, Mitrovic was loaned out to satellite club Teleoptik in the 2011/12 season, returning to make his Grobari bow during 2012.

His goal record attracted the attention of Anderlecht and he moved to Brussels in August 2013 - scoring 36 goals in 69 appearances and helping his side to a domestic league and cup double in 2014.

First capped by Serbia at senior level against Belgium in June 2013, Aleksander's debut goal followed against Croatia three months later.

By the time the second arrived on the occasion of his fifteenth outing (against France in September 2015) though, Mitrovic had forged his Premier League reputation.

Sadly though it was for two yellow cards and a red in his first four league games for Newcastle - the first booking coming just seconds after coming off the bench to make his debut against Southampton.

Mitrovic "celebrated" his 21st birthday with one third of a three game ban for a straight red against Arsenal served and his side bottom of the table - hardly a great start.

His erratic form and further suspensions didn't help the cause as the side were relegated and he started the 2016/17 season serving a four match suspension.

Taking a blow on the head in his first outing of the season against Cheltenham Town, he then marked his belated first Championship appearance by scoring in the 6-0 humiliation of QPR at Loftus Road.

Goals interspersed with stupidity continued; his first PL strike against West Ham accompanied by a retrospective three game ban for a stray elbow.

That seemed to be the last straw for Rafa and after a further handful of substitute outings, Mitro was loaned out during the January 2018 transfer window as Islam Slimani was borrowed from Leicester City.

Rejecting a move to Middlesbrough in order to rejoin Anderlecht, he had reached Brussels on deadline day before the Belgians announced they couldn't finance the deal after failing to sell another player.

A last-ditch attempt to join Bordeaux was claimed before Fulham's Serbian manager Slavisa Jokanovic intervened and a move to Craven Cottage was hastily concluded.

Life by the Thames suited him, with 12 goals in 17 Championship games helping Fulham to clinch promotion, via a playoff final victory over Aston Villa at Wembley.

Scoring once in three games at the World Cup Finals for Serbia, United were willing sellers when Fulham enquired and a deal eventually worth up to £27m was done.

Despite 11 Premier League goals in the 2018/19 season, the Cottagers went down and Mitrovic was expected to be sold on.

Instead, he signed a new five year deal at the Cottagers in July 2019, scoring 26 times as they gained promotion.

Mitro couldn't help prevent Fulham's relegation, netting just three times in the PL in the 2020/21 season.

Linked with moves again that summer, August 2021 saw him agree another five year contract to remain in SW6.

43 Championship goals followed as promotion was achieved again and 14 Premier League strikes came in 2022/23 despite an eight game ban for shoving referee Chris Kavanagh during an FA Cup tie against Manchester United.

August 2023 saw Mitro join the mass exodus from the Premier League to Saudi Arabia, joining Al Hilal for £50m.

He moved to Qatar Stars League side Al Rayyan in September 2025.

Mick Quinn's scoring run (nine in five games) deserted him against his old club, but Andy Thorn came up trumps.

It was a treble celebration for the defender, who as well as netting the winner had been given the club captaincy and then hours after the game became a father.

Newcastle bounced back from defeat at Southampton to register their fifth victory in six games and remain on top of the table.

Beleaguered City boss Alan Ball handed a debut to former Celtic striker Gerry Creaney, who netted a consolation strike.

By then though, the visitors were down to ten men after Richard Edgehill was sent off by Jeff Winter in only the 24th minute.

A bubbling Kevin Keegan said afterwards, "You could take the first 15 minutes, bottle it up, and in 300 years' time someone could look at it and say: `that's football'."

United fans showed great spirit and endeavour to reach The Dell, with the country in the grip of a fuel blockade.

Unfortunately the same couldn't be said about Bobby's team who put in a performance best described as "gutless".

This was to be the final game United played here before it was demolished and the Saints decamped to St.Mary's. Good Riddance.

It wasn't quite Shack's six, Quinn's four or Supermac's hat-trick, but Patrick Kluivert marked his full home debut with two goals.

However, it was a night of frustration for the home side with Aaron Hughes and Kieron Dyer both limping off injured and Nicky Butt needlessly red-carded.

Hapoel's spoiling tactics paid off for them and after Kluivert's early opener, the tie degenerated into a niggly affair, with most of the notable strikes being on opponents rather than on the goals.

2006 United's youngsters bounced back from the previous week's 0-2 defeat by Stoke City when they overcame West Bromwich Albion by the same score at Little Benton.

James Marwood rifled in a spectacular long range effort before Kazenga LuaLua's penalty conversion sealed the points.

Newcastle's first visit to Bloomfield Road in 22 years saw them deservedly suffer a first defeat of the season, despite taking the lead.

Andy Carroll's header opened the scoring, but veteran Brett Ormerod levelled, tucking home a rebound after Steve Harper had saved.

Jason Euell then got the winner from close range, reacting first after a loose ball bounced around the six yard box.

3,700 fans - the largest crowd for a home reserve game in over six years - saw United beaten 2-3 by Chelsea at SJP.

Ryan Donaldson and Haris Vuckic netted but Tim Krul upended Adam Philip in the area and he netted a 92nd minute penalty to win it.

Adam Armstrong fired home his fourth goal in as many games but he and his colleagues failed to convert a further 24 shots.

As he had done a week earlier at Swansea, Jamaal Lascelles headed the winner from a Matt Ritchie corner giving manager Rafa Benitez a successful return to the dugout after surgery.

With the game locked at 1-1 after a maiden Premier League goal from Christian Atsu had been cancelled out, Lascelles was energised by an argument with referee Stuart Attwell over his refusal to award a penalty and promptly powered a header in off the bar.
