Tyneside-based Football Bobbles have added a new scarf to their range of Magpie-based merchandise, named after United's 1990s hero Tino Asprilla. Find that online here

We have a one to give away in a free-to-enter competition and simply require you to predict the full time score in our PL home fixture against Brentford this coming Saturday.

Email your score prediction to [email protected] by 2pm GMT on Saturday, subject line of Scarf

No age limit, open to all but delivery only to a UK address. One entry each please. In the event of a tie, one winner will be randomly drawn from all correct entries received.

PS: Tino scarves will be available from the Football Bobbles stall outside the Trent House from 2.30pm on Saturday, along with the Srnicek hat/scarf joint discount deal.

Deadline day:
Departure predicted

Sky Sports report that long-serving Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles is set to make a permanent departure today, signing for Championship side Leicester City.

Confirmation of that may not come until Tuesday, with the EFL working through a backlog of completed transfers.

The 32 year-old who is out of contract at Gallowgate this summer made the most recent of his 253 competitive senior Magpie appearances against Arsenal back in September.

Media claims of deadline day departures for Sandro Tonali (Arsenal) and Joe Willock (Fulham) were rubbished while there were no arrivals at SJP.

Speaking of ex-Magpies, Moussa Sissoko ended his second stint at Watford after completing a move to Greek side Panathinnaikos, who are managed by Rafa Benitez.

Allan Saint-Maximin joined French side RC Lens after leaving Mexicans Club America while Southampton's Adam Armstrong made a (temporary) Premier League return with Wolves.

U18s:
No reward for late show

Manchester City U18s  3  Newcastle U18s  1

Saturday saw Newcastle U18s become the latest side to succumb to Manchester City, as the Northern Section Premier League leaders made it 12 wins from 13 games.

Beaten 1-7 on their last visit to City's Football Academy, United got off to the worst possible start on eight minutes when an unforced error by goalkeeper Roman Dowell allowed Dexter Oliver the easiest of finishes.

The visiting custodian then kept his side in the game with two eye-catching stops to prevent Xavier Parker scoring.

That lead was extended four minutes before half-time when Christian Dunbar-McDonald fired in a low shot - just seconds after Matheos Ferreira had run from his own half deep into the City box but failed to find the unmarked Michael Mills.

An improved showing from the young Magpies after the interval saw them create three half-chances from close range in the opening five minutes.

A penalty shout when a defender barged into United's Rory Finneran was ignored by referee Steven Taylor (not that one) and the hosts grabbed a third goal their next attack - Dunbar-McDonald smashing home in the 58th minute.

Undaunted by the increasing deficit, the visitors pushed forward at every opportunity, substitute Kacey Wooster quickly into the action and denied by Ben Vickery.

Newcastle did get on the scoresheet with 15 minutes of normal time remaining, when a long free kick from Mason Miley was headed home by Henry Johnson.

Michael Mills then saw his effort roll just wide of the target before a handball in the box gave United a penalty in the third minute of added time. However, Wooster could only direct it straight at the 'keeper.

Team: Dowell, Johnson, Morgan (Hutchison 84), Durrant, Moran, Finneran, Tikka-Lemba (M.Taylor 63), M.Miley, Ferreira (Wooster 63), Lucas (Pinnington 77), Mills.
Sub n/u: Anderson.

Booked: Ferreira, Lucas.

Champions League:
Qarabag dates set

The Champions League last 16 play-off draw paired Newcastle with reigning Azerbaijan League champions Qarabag FK, who play in the Azerbaijan capital Baku.

The away leg is played first on Wednesday 18th February, with the return at SJP on Tuesday 24th February. United's seeded status ensured home advantage in the second leg.

Confirmed match dates:

Venue for the tie is the 31,000 capacity Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium, a 5,000 mile round trip from Tyneside.

Fantastically, the ground is named in honour of the "Russian linesman" from the 1966 World Cup Final.

Four League Phase games there this season saw Qarabag defeat Copenhagen and Bayer Leverkusen, draw with Chelsea and losing to Ajax.

United's hectic February fixture list reads as follows:

Wed 04.02.2026 Manchester City (a) 8pm (CC)
Sat 07.02.2026 Brentford (h) 5.30pm (PL)

Tue 24.02.2026 Qarabag (h) 8pm (CL)
Sat 28.02.2026 Everton (h) 3pm (PL)

PS: The winner of United's play-off will face either Barcelona or Chelsea in the round of 16, with the side advancing from the play-off at home first then away.

Update:
Loan lads

Antonio Cordero (Cadiz)
Sunday saw Cadiz beaten 0-1 at Huesca in La Liga 2 with the Magpie winger (pictured) completing 85 minutes.

NUFC.com correspondent TT noted that after a quiet first half, "Antonito" came more into his own and played well.

Harshly booked for a legitimate tackle, he subsequently sent over two decent crosses from the left, both of which were directed wide by the Cadiz forward Alvaro Pascual.

Matt Targett (Middlesbrough):
A 1-0 home win over Norwich City on Saturday boosted Boro's bid for automatic promotion from the Championship. Targett completed another 90 minutes.

Harrison Ashby/Joe White (Bradford City):
A welcome three points for the Bantams in League One on Saturday thanks to a 1-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers at Valley Parade, but both on-loan Mags were unused subs.

Max Thompson (Ayr United):
A winning debut for Max on Saturday, as Ayr defeated
Raith Rovers 2-1 at home in the Scottish Championship.

Our man at Somerset Park said, "Thompson superb today, made one unbelievable save in the second half. Definitely a huge upgrade for us!"

Charlie McArthur (Airdrieonians):

90 minutes in defence for Charlie on Saturday, as his current side won 2-0 at Dunfermline in the Scottish Championship.

Joe Brayson (Morpeth Town):
Another start for the forward as Town lost 0-1 at home to Guiseley in the Northern Premier League on Saturday.

It's unclear whether this was the final game of Joe's short loan spell at the Highwaymen.

Trevan Sanusi (Lorient):
The winger watched from the bench as Lorient secured a 2-1 home win over Nantes in Ligue 1 on Saturday.

Travis Hernes (Groningen):
Saturday saw a 0-2 loss at Sparta Rotterdam in the Eredivisie, with the midfielder an unused replacement.

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville):
A load of balearics on Monday night, as Vlach & Co. were beaten 1-4 at Real Mallorca in La Liga.

Carabao Cup:
Manchester City (a)

Attempting to overturn a 0-2 deficit following the first leg, The Magpies are in Carabao Cup second leg action at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

It's an 8pm kick-off and Newcastle will be backed by a travelling contingent of 5,359 supporters.

Were the aggregate score to be level at the end of normal time, an additional 30 minutes will be played, followed by a penalty shootout if required to determine the winner.

The identity of the team that the winners of this tie will face at Wembley Stadium on Sunday March 22nd will already be known, Arsenal hosting Chelsea at the Emirates this Tuesday. The Gunners lead 3-2 after the first leg.

The most recent Newcastle goalscorer at this ground  was DeAndre Yedlin back in September 2018 - 690 minutes ago.

The last away team to record a two goal victory in the League Cup was....Newcastle, back in October 2014.

Team:
Tino Livramento, Fabian Schar and Joelinton remain unavailable, with Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman and Jamie Miley all doubtful.

Assuming he features, Harvey Barnes will reach a century of appearances in all competitions for Newcastle.

Coral rate this tie as follows:

NUFC win 3/1
The draw 29/10
MCFC win 4/5

New customers receive a £50 bet when staking £10 on the PL (T's & C's apply). Find those markets online here

MCFC: Although the limitation of playing for just one club in the competition has been abolished, defender Marc Guehi isn't eligible to face Newcastle as his transfer from Crystal Palace wasn't finalised before the semi-final first leg.

Jeremy Doku, Ruben Dias, John Stones, Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic and Savinho are all sidelined.

Ahead of our visit, Pepe Guardiola's side drew 2-2 at Spurs in the Premier League on Sunday.

Referee: Tony Harrington - a first Newcastle game this season for the Hartlepool official, last seen taking charge of our final day Premier League home loss to Everton in May.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.

still fighting on five fronts apparently:

Born Or Died:

1911 Death of Jock Smith, 43 (approx.)
(1894-96)

1921 Ernest Brown born, South Shields
(1945-47)

Inside left who joined the Magpies from his hometown club but failed to make a senior appearance before joining Southend United.

Returning to South Shields from the Shrimpers in 1951, Ernie passed away in 1976.

1968 Darren Peacock
born, Bristol.
(1994-98)

Central defender who held our transfer record after his £2.7m purchase from QPR - not bad for a player released by Bristol Rovers and with spells at Hereford United and Newport County on his CV.

Darren's debut came in a 3-0 home win against Norwich City in March 1994, while the following season saw Peacock and Co. enjoy a brief taste of UEFA Cup action and notch his first Newcastle goal, during a memorable 3-3 home draw with Spurs.

A regular performer in the following season, the 1996/97 campaign saw Peacock paired to good effect with Philippe Albert or Steve Howey - although a ploy to play all three was quickly abandoned.

That season had also seen him open the scoring in the memorable "Howay 5-0" defeat of Manchester United and retain his place in the side as Kevin Keegan gave way to Kenny Dalglish.

However, the 1997/98 season was to be Darren's last at SJP, Nicos Dabizas arriving and partnering Howey in the FA Cup Final - Albert getting the nod over Peacock for bench duty at Wembley.

Joining Blackburn Rovers on a Bosman free, Darren was unable to prevent their relegation and in the third and final season of his Ewood contract and was then demoted to the reserves by new boss, Graham Souness.

A loan move to West Ham in September 2000 was quickly followed by a temporary switch to Wolves - the team he was playing for when his career came to an abrupt end.

A League Cup tie at Fulham in November 2000 saw Peacock suffer serious damage to vertebrae in his neck and compression of the spine in an accidental collision with his own 'keeper Michael Oakes.

He immediately quit the game on medical advice and relocated to Portugal - only to make an unexpected return to domestic football in April 2013 when appointed the head coach of non-league Lancaster City.

However, Darren's time at Giant Axe failed to live up to expectations and he relinquished his post during September 2015.

A BBC web article about players who made it in football after being released by a club's academy cited Peacock as a shining example, but rather inappropriately said of him:

"Now that's one player with real backbone."

PS: As part of the NUFC side who "blew" the title, Peacock is entitled to his own view:

"People look back at that Newcastle side and say: 'Great team, crap defence', and that does tend to get on my nerves.

"We let a 12-point lead go, so perhaps we didn't deserve any prizes for ruthlessness, but if you look at the final table you will find we conceded just two goals more than Manchester United.

"It was just that there was an imbalance between the number of defenders in the team and the number of attackers.

"That's how Kevin wanted to play, it was great fun, and we came close, but ultimately we lost out."

1990 Callum Morris born, Newcastle.
(2006-10)

Central defender who came through the academy to made his senior debut in a friendly at Hartlepool during August 2008.

Sidelined through injury at the same time as Ben Tozer, fellow reserve defender Tamas Kadar was promoted to the first team bench during a festive injury crisis.

Restored to fitness, Callum signed his first professional contract in March 2009, facing Shamrock Rovers in pre-season.

That was to be his only senior pitch time and he left the club in 2010, having trials with Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Gateshead and joining Blyth Spartans.

Signing for Spanish side Jerez Industrial, who were linked with the Glen Hoddle soccer academy, Morris then returned to the UK f
ollowing trials with clubs in Portugal and Greece.

Appearing for both Hayes & Yeading and Morpeth Town, a full time contract came his way at Scottish First Division side Dunfermline Athletic in August 2012.

Later moves took him to Dundee United, Aberdeen (although he never played for them), a second spell at Dunfermline and then Ross County in 2018.

Released by the Staggies in May 2021, he joined Morpeth Town a couple of months later, finally retiring in 2023.

Internationally, Callum represented the Republic of Ireland at U19 and U21 level while at SJP before switching to Northern Ireland - his father coming from Belfast.

However, he failed to win a senior cap despite squad call-ups in 2016, 2017 and 2019.

The last one was particularly unfortunate, given the green light to face Luxembourg at Windsor Park, only to suffer a hamstring injury during training the day before.

After a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor, there was nothing between the sides on an icy St. James' Park pitch, until Jackie Milburn had his ankles tapped as he strode into the box.

The referee correctly pointed to the spot and Bobby Mitchell converted the penalty at the Gallowgate End to send his side through.

Newcastle's sixth meeting with the O's in East London went the way of the previous five visits, ending in defeat.

Catching the eye for the home side at Brisbane Road was 18 year-old winger John Chiedozie.

An unimpressed Magpies boss Bill McGarry gave his verdict: "We have enough ability in our side but we just seem to be lacking something away from home. Perhaps we have got to learn to graft that bit harder."

United strung together three successive league victories for the first time that season, moving to within eight points of third place.

The Trotters did their bit to aid this midweek home win, Mike Doyle dismissed following a 12th minute clash with Imre Varadi.

That came with United already a goal up after Paul Jones had been a bad bad boy, fouling Varadi for a penalty John Trewick tucked in.

Ex-Magpie Alan Gowling led the line for Bolton but offered little and after Chris Waddle hit a post from 24 yards out, on-loan David Mills teed up Kenny Wharton to drive home his fifth goal of the season.

After the shenanigans at Millmoor in the first meeting, Newcastle's progress to a Fifth Round tie at Blackburn Rovers was confirmed in rather more restrained circumstances.

However, they were fortunate to go in level at half time, Chris Wilder blazing wide from just 10 yards.

The replacement of injury victim Steve Howey by Brian Kilcline was pivotal, "Killer" leading by example and making the challenge that saw John Beresford's cross reach David Kelly to rattle in the opener.

An awful performance at Craven Cottage saw us limp to our first league defeat of the year as Fulham ended up comfortable winners.

An injury-time route-one goal for Obafemi Martins was far too little, too late for a side who had completely lost their way in the preceding 90 minutes.

2009 Nicky Butt signed the one-year contract extension offered some weeks earlier.

That committed him to the club until summer 2010, by which time he'd be 35 and have spent six seasons at SJP (although one of those saw him loaned to Birmingham City).

2010 United U18s bludgeoned their way into an FA Youth Cup Quarter Final spot after beating West Ham 3-0 at Upton Park. Jeff Henderson, Phil Airey and Brad Inman all found the net.
