Update:
Trafford talk resurfaces

Almost a year to the day that reports of interest from Newcastle in James Trafford appeared, identical claims about the Burnley goalkeeper circulated on Tuesday.

Speculation over transfer talks grew as the 22 year-old 6 foot 6 inch tall native of Cockermouth was on the bench for England in their defeat by Senegal, joining Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon in Thomas Tuchel's squad.

Those reports spoke of Trafford moving to Gallowgate to compete with Nick Pope as first-choice custodian, but whether that's a realistic goal remains to be seen.

With Manchester City as a youngster, Trafford's senior competitive debut came while on loan to Accrington Stanley in August 2021; a further temporary switch then taking him to Bolton Wanderers for an 18 month period.

A £19m move from City to Burnley followed in July 2023 ahead of their Premier League return, playing 28 times in the top flight for the Clarets that season.

Tipped to leave Turf Moor as Burnley returned to the Championship, United failed to complete a deal as PSR obligations blighted their summer 2024 transfer activity.

Last season saw James keep 29 clean sheets in 45 league outings as Scott Parker's side mounted a successful promotion bid and finished second to Leeds United.

That included a memorable double penalty save against the mackems; Trafford successfully employing mind games to deny Wilson Isidor twice from 12 yards.

Update:
Bill McKinney RIP

The death of former Magpie Bill McKinney has been announced, at the age of 88.

Wallsend-born Bill served his apprenticeship as a plater at Swan Hunter Shipyard, playing junior football for both Wallsend Rising Sun and Wallsend St. Lukes.

Completing his national service in the army, Bill was selected for their national XI and joined United during May 1956, playing for their "A" team initially.

Losing out to fellow new arrival Dick Keith in his first season at Gallowgate, Bill had to wait until December 1957 for a first team chance, stepping up from the reserves to play in a 3-3 draw away to Spurs.

Finally becoming a first team regular at right back in the 1960/61 relegation campaign, Bill played in both full back positions and at centre half as unsuccessful promotion challenges were mounted over the next three seasons.

Replaced by David Craig late in the 1963/64 season, Bill featured just twice more ahead of a £2,750 switch to Bournemouth in August 1965 - leaving Gallowgate with eight goals in 95 league and cup games.

Reunited with Dick Keith at Dean Court 1966 saw him join Third Division side Mansfield Town and he played on at Field Mill for another two seasons.

A move to Southern Premier League side Wellington Town (who later renamed themselves Telford United) followed, McKinney settling in the Shropshire town of Dawley and remained there after his retirement.

Released/retained:
Callum comeback
still a possibility

Newcastle have confirmed their retained and released player lists, with Jamal Lewis and Lloyd Kelly the only two confirmed departures - the former becoming a free agent and the latter completing a permanent move to Juventus.

Callum Wilson and John Ruddy remain under contract at Gallowgate until the end of June, United revealing that they "have opened discussions with both players about their futures and new contracts could still be agreed."

Following announcements regarding contract extensions for Dan Burn, Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar, the club confirm that an option has been exercised for back-up goalkeeper Mark Gillespie to remain at SJP for a further 12 months.

Six members of the club's Development squad are also exiting: midfield pair Ellis Stanton and James Huntley, attacking duo Jay Turner-Cooke and Josh Donaldson and the Powell twins Harry and Rory - both defenders.

Competition:
Badge winner

The latest designs from Magpin extend his Carabao Cup winner special editions to include Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton posing with the silverware.

The badges are sold in a double pack, in stock now online here and we had a pair to give away, asking
which drink became the League Cup's very first sponsor in 1982.

It was of course Milk (referenced in a TV advert about Ian Rush and Accrington Stanley) and rising like cream to the top and bagging the badges was Chris Gunning.

On This Day in History
15th June

Born Or Died:

1970 Brian Reid born, Paisley, Scotland. (1994)

Scotland U21 central defender who began his professional career at Greenock Morton before joining Rangers in 1991.

Moving to SJP on loan in March 1994, Reid was given squad number 29 and named on the bench for a 1-2 defeat at Manchester City in the Premier League a month later.

By then though, United had also completed the signing of QPR defender Darren Peacock and no deal was ever completed for Reid, who returned to Ibrox that summer having failed to make a senior Magpies debut.

1996 saw Reid leave Rangers in favour of a second spell at Morton, later playing for Burnley, Dunfermline Athletic, Blackpool, Falkirk and Queen of the South.

Hanging up his boots while on the books of Ayr United, Brian took charge at Somerset Park for a five year period in 2007, before spending 2013 in the Philippines, coaching at Global FC in the city of Tacloban.

Back in the UK, he scouted for Coventry City boss (and ex-Ibrox colleague) Steven Pressley, on whose recommendation Reid became manager of Conference side Nuneaton Town in April 2014.

That lasted just nine months though and by May 2015, Reid had returned to his native Scotland as Stranraer manager but resigned in January 2017 after a downturn in results.

He was part of Steven Pressley's coaching staff at Cypriot side Pafos before taking charge of Albion Rovers in June 2020.

Brian was sacked in March 2023 with Rovers bottom of League Two.

1981 Stuart Green born, Whitehaven, Cumbria. (1999-2002)

A creative midfielder who travelled across from Cumbria to train with Newcastle as a schoolboy, Stuart became a regular starter at Academy and reserve level.

However he never made a competitive first team appearance, a dislocated shoulder sustained during a reserve game in February 2001 sidelining him at the point that he'd played his way into Bobby Robson's squad and a senior debut looked on the cards.

The nearest he came to making the step up had come under Robson's predecessor Ruud Gullit, when named on the bench for the infamous Tyne-wear monsoon derby in 1999 with Alan Shearer and Duncan Ferguson.

Loaned to Carlisle United in December 2001, a temporary stint at Hull City was made permanent a year later in a £150K deal.

A change of manager at the Tigers though saw Green back at Brunton Park again, before returning to Hull - where he became a first team regular until signing for Crystal Palace at the start of the 2006/07 season.

By 2008 though Green was out of favour at Selhurst Park and allowed to join Blackpool on a free transfer, making just one league before exiting to Crewe Alexandra on loan.

Joining Wycombe Wanderers ahead of the 2009/10 season, Stuart found himself a free agent again in the summer 2011, returning to Cumbria and signing for Workington after an unsuccessful trial with Carlisle United.

June 2012 then saw him make a first move into coaching, taking a player-manager role at Northern League side Whitehaven but exiting barely a year later.

A return to management came during June 2017 with Cleator Moor Celtic, before concentrating on his own coaching school in West Cumbria.

What Else?

1928 West Ham completed the signing of John Hailes after his release by Newcastle.

The 20 year-old native of Hetton had hit the headlines the previous March when scoring six goals for the reserves on his debut, but wasn't retained at Gallowgate.

1949 IF Kamraterna (Sweden) (a) 4-0 (2-0)
Friendly
Milburn(
1-0,3-0,4-0), Mitchell(3-0
22,105
The penultimate game of Newcastle's marathon expedition actross North America pitted them against fellow touring side Kamaterna of Sweden, aka IFK Gothenburg.

The largest crowd ever to attend a soccer match in Canada at that time paid from five shillings to 12 shillings & sixpence to see a game played in 35 degree heat.

Following this game at Exhibition Park in Toronto, both sides moved moved on to New York and met again four days later.

1964 As doubts grew over Newcastle's ability to stage the three 1966 World Cup fixtures allocated to them, Middlesbrough wrote to the Football Association offering their Ayresome Park as an alternative.

1964
Former Gallowgate favourite Jimmy Scoular was confirmed as the new boss of Cardiff City. The 39 year-old had finally retired from playing earlier in the year and had a brief unsuccessful spell at the helm of Bradford Park Avenue.

1971
The 1971/72 fixtures were released, Leeds United punished for previous crowd trouble by the closure of Elland Road for the first four home games - including the visit of Newcastle in early September.

Attempts to reschedule those until later in the season were rejected, but as the punishment stopped short of forcing Don Revie's side to play behind closed doors, alternative venues were permitted.

The Leeds Road home of Huddersfield Town hosted two of the games, with a third at Hull City's Boothferry Park and Newcastle travelling to Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough Stadium.

1980
Northern Ireland's summer tour of Australia reached Melbourne, where they played out a 1-1 draw against the national side at the Olympic Park Stadium.

Newcastle's Tommy Cassidy was in the starting line-up alongside future Magpie David McCreery.

1995
Ex-Magpies boss Jim Smith returned to football management as took the vacant position at Derby County.

1996 Former and future Magpies lined up for the Republic of Ireland as they beat Bolivia 3-0 in a friendly staged at Giants Stadium in New Jersey, USA.

Shay Given was between the posts (giving way in the latter stages to Packie Bonner, who made his 80th & final Eire appearance), while Liam O'Brien won the last of his 16 full caps for his country.

1998 England's World Cup Final campaign got underway at the Stade Velodrome in Marseilles (although a different sort of campaign had already begun in the streets round the port some hours earlier....)

Alan Shearer opened the scoring with a header and a solid midfield display from David Batty saw Tunisia deservedly beaten 0-2.

1999 Defender Alain Goma joined United from PSG for £4.7m to form a central defensive partnership with fellow new signing Marcelino. What could go wrong?

2001 It was announced that Alan Shearer finally had another medal to add to his collection - this time an OBE.

2005 Chelsea's Scott Parker became a Magpie as Laurent Robert joined Andy O'Brien at Portsmouth.

Meanwhile, an online petition by Blues fans caused Lee Bowyer to abandon his proposed switch to Birmingham City from SJP; bailing out at the last minute as Craig Bellamy had some months earlier.

2006 Michael Owen again failed to shine but neither did his colleagues as Trinidad & Tobago held England for 80 minutes of their World Cup group game in Nuremburg.

Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard scored late goals to the relief of the nation. The 2-0 win put them into the knockout stages.

2007 Confirmation came that Mike Ashley in the guise of St. James' Holdings had acquired just over 77% of the shares in the club.

That provided Ashley with the platform to de-list the company from the Stock Exchange.

Meanwhile, the Stevens report into football transfers mentioned Newcastle staff past and present in its findings.

Statements from ex-Manager Graeme Souness were found to be inconsistent with those made by Kenneth Shepherd over the Emre's move from Inter Milan.

Deals involving Albert Luque, Amdy Faye and Jean-Alain Boumsong remained uncleared by the enquiry and the name of their agent Willie McKay featured in the report.

2008 Although expected to convert his season-long loan at Bolton Wanderers into a permanent transfer, several sources linked Liverpool midfielder Danny Guthrie with a move to Tyneside instead.

2014
France got their World Cup Final campaign off to a winning start in Porto Alegre, beating Honduras 3-0.

Mathieu Debuchy started while fellow Magpie Moussa Sissoko came off the bench. SJP old boy
Yohan Cabaye played but former loanee Loic Remy was benched.

2024 Fabian Schar started for the Swiss in their Euro 2024 group stage opener - a 3-1 win over Hungary in Cologne.
