There was a first PL2 strike for Ben Parkinson in only his second appearance at this level. Fellow 17 year-old Johnny Emerson made his reserve debut.

A stubborn second half display from Newcastle U21s saw them collect their first point in four attempts at a chilly Whitey Park on Monday night.

Leeds opened brightly and Jeremiah Mullen was left unmarked from a corner in the third minute, but headed straight at home goalkeeper Max Thompson.

The visitors were ahead on eight minutes after Charlie Allen breezed past Jordan Hackett and pulled the ball back from the right hand byline for Mateo Joseph to clip it home from close range.

Nothing had been seen of the hosts as an attacking force until a defensive mix-up in the 37th minute gave Ben Parkinson the chance to fire in his first goal at this level from the edge of the area.

Parity proved to be fleeting however as Leeds went back in front from their next attack, Sean McGurk jinking to the left hand of the area and seeing his low cross touched in by Allen at the back post.

Thompson did well to deny Allen in first half added time and the Leeds striker had the ball in the net on 66 minutes, only an offside flag to halt his celebrations.

A more focused second half display from Ben Dawson's side didn't translate into scoring chances, while at the other end Charlie Wiggett cleared off his own line to prevent Cian Coleman making it 1-3 in the 75th minute.

Newcastle's pressure belatedly paid off with their second equaliser of the night six minutes from the end of normal time -  Matty Bondswell's centre from the left deflected into his own goal by Connor Ferguson.

Home defender Remi Savage saw red a minute from the end of normal time after blocking Luca Thomas on the edge of the box; Max Thompson acrobatically clawing Morten Spencer's resultant free kick away.

The ten man Magpies could then have won it; Amadou Diallo on the counter attack and playing Michael Ndiweni in, only for Leeds 'keeper Dani van den Heuvel to hare off his line and block the shot.

Further Leeds pressure deep into added time looked like paying off when Thomas found himself one on one with Thompson, but the Magpies custodian rounded off an excellent display by blocking the shot.
