Monday saw the second Tyne-wear U21 meeting of the season staged - and once again there was late joy for the red and whites.

An improbable added time effort by their 'keeper earned the mackems a point on Tyneside in October and they went one better at the academy of plight in the return game - claiming victory with an 87th minute goal.

The wind was the winner of a scoreless opening period, United's only effort of note a 23rd minute shot from James Huntley that Jacob Carney saved and a booking for Callum Wilson (a home defender, not our lad).

Things livened up somewhat after the interval when midfielder Josh Scott powered home a fine effort from inside the box to give United a 49th minute advantage.

Although winger Amadou Diallo found space down the left flank, an under-strength Magpies side featuring debutant teenager forward Ben Parkinson proved unable to turn pressure into further goals.

Almost inevitably they were punished when the hosts levelled thanks to a curling effort from Costa Rican wideman Jewison Bennette on 64 minutes.

Magpies defender Harry Barclay then needed treatment before the restart and was unable to continue - further weakening a backline already reshaped due to injury and loan departures.

The mackems claimed all three points three minutes from the end of normal time, when defender Zak Johnson was left unmarked to head in Caden Kelly's corner.

The defeat leaves Ben Dawson's side winless in their last five PL2 fixtures, reducing still further their chances of qualifying for the promotion playoffs.

PS: Missing from the side was defender Niall Brookwell who has joined National League North side Darlington for the rest of the season.
