It's now two wins from two pre-season games for Newcastle U21s, following victory at Brockhall on Wednesday.

Facing PL2 Division One opposition, Elliot Dickman's Division Two side came close to an early breakthrough when Dylan Stephenson struck the crossbar on seven minutes.

Matty Longstaff then shot against a post five minutes later, before Kyle Crossley put the Magpies ahead on 25 minutes.

That advantage was then doubled 10 minutes later after a free kick from Santiago Munoz evaded the defensive wall and ended up in the Rovers net.

The home side saw a 42nd minute effort chalked off due to a raised offside flag and trailed by two at the break.

United made nine changes for the second half but it was a player who stayed on who came close to extending the lead; Matty Longstaff again denied by the woodwork on 55 minutes.

Rovers then took advantage of some lax defending to halve the deficit through newly-arrived replacement Harley O
'Grady-Macken on 64 minutes.

The black and whites restored their two goal advantage in the final seconds of play, Alex Murphy getting on the end of Jay Turner-Cooke's free kick to head past 'keeper Aidan Dowling and register his maiden goal for the club.
