Newcastle's U23 side recorded their first victory of the season on Friday, overcoming Steve Stone's Clarets at the Lancashire FA HQ in Leyland.

Ahead through Stan Flaherty's 32nd minute free kick, United were pegged back five minutes before half time when Max Thompson beat Will Brown.

Almost immediately, Burnley's Jake Rooney was forced into a goal-line clearance to deny Jack Young.

Giant defender Ludwig Francillette did regain the lead for the visitors on 62 minutes, before Flaherty's second of the game made it 3-1 to Newcastle.

Ashley Barnes then missed the chance to reduce the arrears, smashing his 79th minute penalty kick off the post after substitute Joe McGlynn was impeded in the box.
