United's reserves were denied what would have
been a fourth consecutive league win by a late defensive lapse, as they were
held 1-1 on Tuesday evening.
Going into the final minute of their first-ever visit to the Church Road ground
of North Ferriby, the Magpies were ahead thanks to a fortunate deflected strike
from Mark Doninger after 58 minutes.
However a poor clearance from Shane Ferguson fell to Jamie Devitt and substitute
Darragh Satelle was able to steer a low shot beyond Fraser Forster to equalise.
In fairness that was the least that the Tigers had deserved, after a night when
their ineptness in front of goal saw them hit the woodwork twice and miscue on
three other occasions when a goal looked inevitable.
Newcastle never truly got into their stride before the break, with Nile Ranger
lacking support up front and his colleagues seemingly content to play long
forward balls rather than get at Hull down the flanks.
However, they did find a route to goal in the closing minutes of the half,
Ranger twice striding into the box and seeing shots blocked, while captain Ryan
Donaldson made similar headway but his effort was deflected wide.
The first suggestion that home 'keeper Tom Woodhead wasn't the sharpest came ten
minutes after the restart, when he fumbled a routine take but escaped as Ranger
wasn't close enough to convert the loose ball.
Just three minutes later though Woodhead was in action again, helping a Mark
Doninger shot over his line that had reached him via a defender's deflection - a
messy goal but cheered by the healthy contingent of Toon fans present.
And that seemed to be that, with Hull failing to get their act together in front
of goal - until Republic of Ireland youth international Satelle popped up to
level.
