The Magpies maintained their interest in
the Central League Cup with victory at Victoria Park on Monday night -
although they had to come from behind to do so.
And while Nile Ranger has been hogging the goalscoring headlines so far
this season, Newcastle were grateful to stand-in striker Sammy Ameobi, who
netted twice.
The 16 year-old was promoted from the bench to a starting place instead of
the advertised number 10 Andy Carroll and went on to score his first goals
at this level, having also just broken into the U18 side this season.
'Pools had just about deserved their lead, gained when midfielder Martin
Young fired home three minutes before the break after Tamas Kadar had lost
possession cheaply.
The visitors had created little save for one effort from Ameobi that was
blocked and although the opening stages of the second half proved better,
efforts from Mark Doninger and Jonny Godsmark were both dealt with.
Doninger and James Marwood then gave way to James Tavernier & Conor
Newton - both youngsters turning 17 this month and their arrival boosted
the Magpies, who began to threaten down both flanks.
Newcastle levelled the match on 71 minutes when Godsmark switched wings to
attack down the left and crossed for Ameobi to take a touch and rifle
home.
Godsmark himself then saw an effort tipped over within two minutes, before
Ranger set up Brad Inman - another 16 year who had come off the bench -
for a blocked shot.
The winner arrived on 76 minutes, when Ranger burst into the box and
unselfishly centred from the right for Ameobi to fire the ball past Jan
Budtz once again.
