Goals

Half time: Forest 0 Newcastle 0

74 mins Joelinton played a short pass infield from the United left to Bruno Guimaraes, occupying a central position just inside his own half. He immediately pushed the ball forward to the unattended Jacob Ramsey, who turned and picked out the onrushing Harvey Barnes in one flowing movement.

Shrugging off the attentions of Morato, Barnes fired a rising shot into the net from 15 yards out at the Bridgford End before celebrating with the away support as he had in this game last season.
1-0

88 mins A speculative ball from out on the Forest right was directed towards Chris Wood inside the United box under pressure Lewis Hall and played away from goal past Lorenzo Lucca, who ran to retrieve possession then turned back towards goal before leaving it on the instruction of Elliot Anderson, arriving from a deep position.

Anderson pushed the ball forward to James McAtee on the left side of the area before collecting the pass as it was played infield to avoid the covering Sven Botman. Anderson's run wasn't tracked fully by Bruno and Hall was helpless to prevent Anderson firing a left-footed shot beyond Nick Pope and into the far side of the net. The goalscorer briefly received treatment from a colleague for cramp before directing a clenched fist salute towards home supporters behind the goal.

Full time: Forest 1 Newcastle 1

We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"It's a decent performance but when you group everything that's happened to us this season, it's another game that we feel we should've won and we haven't.

"Already we're starting to digest why we didn't - lessons to learn, things to improve. We dominated for large periods and should've scored more than one and then paid the price at the end.

"The team improved as the game went on. First half was a bit of a non-event and we changed things around at half time, moved some things around and were much better in the second half.

"The two subs made a big impact that was good to see - but then we just have to defend better. Of course we had chances to get a second goal and we should have done and then we just didn't defend the goal well enough at all.

"It was our decision on the pitch to go deeper as a protection mechanism but it rarely works. Disappointed with the actions for the goal - it comes from a turnover from their defensive third and we dropped deep instead of chasing the ball.

"If we're able to win our last two games then we'd look at it positively but we have to leave with a better feeling than we have today because ultimately the late goal changes the perception of ourselves and we put so much effort in, the lads are really trying, we're just not putting it together for the whole game.

"We need to be consistent with our performance level and keep and maintain what we've delivered these past few matches. We're looking for goals and wins and entertainment for our supporters which is crucial in our last two games.

"(The) support was magnificent today. After the game they would be feeling the frustration as we are but they greeted the players brilliantly. They have been like that all season and I can't fault them at all. There is unity at the club and that is paramount to what we do."

On Harvey Barnes:

"He's such a good player and he has goals in him - he has done well for us historically off the bench. He has done well when he's started too and he's an outstanding player. Took his goal well and that gives Harvey a great chance to start the next game."

They Said

Winless in all three games against United including his stint at Wolves, Vitor Perreira said:

"
In the end I have reasons to be happy. Three games, very tough without time to recover and time to prepare in the proper way. It was very difficult but the players showed the spirit, the character, and in the end they want to score a second goal.

"I have to be honest that one point, in this moment of the season, is a good point with the players that we have injured at the moment. Difficult to find solutions and the players from the bench went in with spirit to help the team and try to score and I'm very happy with that.

"The character of these players - a special group. They believe even after we conceded the goal that we can score. We did, and maybe, had a chance to score a second. This is the spirit I want in my team.

"Now it's time to recover mentally and physically. Thanks to the supporters because they helped us a lot. We're looking to the future with belief and we know that next season will be good for us.

"It was a very tough week for us. We started with a win against Chelsea (on Monday) and then we didn’t really have time to prepare for a semi-final away from home (Aston Villa on Thursday) and it was a very difficult game, b
ut we are mentally strong and we came back to face a strong team, although we didn’t have full energy because we had some difficult days after the Europa League.

"The character and the belief of these players is fantastic, the supporters helped us a lot and in the end we deserved the point. After we equalised we gave everything to try and get the win.

"Before the game I said to the players to keep our future in our hands. In the end, if you look at the circumstances of the week, I think it was a good point and what we deserved.

"The supporters help us a lot and in the end we deserved the point. Once it was 1-1 they gave everything to try and score a second goal and I am very happy with the players that came on from the bench. They gave everything to support the team."

"It was the magic of McAtee and Elliot. He has faced a very difficult time but he is a talented player with very strong character and he runs until the last metre. He helped us a lot. We have a lot of character in the group and I think we deserved at least a draw.”

On the future of goalscorer Elliot Anderson:

"It’s difficult for me, and everybody, to understand what he is feeling inside of him. I believe that he is honouring his mother, going inside the pitch and running until the last metre, until the last breath.

"I cannot say, I don’t have the answer. I know he deserves the top of the world.

"I know that he’s our player, and we need to enjoy him because I have worked with the top talent players, but to find a top player with this character is not easy.

“I’m not thinking about the next season. I’m thinking about finishing this season in the best position that we can. In the warm-up, my assistants, they said to me, ‘Elliot is on fire today’. Every time that he shot on goal, he scored.

"He had the funeral of his mother two days ago, I didn’t speak with him, but I believe that he wants to honour his mother with a goal. I believe that’s why he tried until the last minute to score a goal, because this is the way that he found to go on the pitch and to give everything to play for.”

Stats

Newcastle have now tossed away a divisional high 27 points from winning positions in the Premier League this season. The full figure in 2025/26 was seven.

The Magpies also head the PL charts for conceding the highest number of goals in the closing 15 minutes of PL games this season, having now let in 20. The full figure in 2025/26 was nine.

36 PL games have brought just eight clean sheets for United, with five of those recorded in their opening seven fixtures. The full figure in 2025/26 was 13.

Harvey Barnes
scored his seventh PL goal of the season to go level with Nick Woltemade in second place behind current PL top scorer Bruno Guimaraes, who has nine. Barnes moves on to 16 club goals in all competitions this season, one behind top scorer Anthony Gordon on 17.

United hit the 50 PL goals mark for the season and have netted 95 times in 56 league and cup games to date. This is the fourth successive season in which Newcastle have reached a PL half century, having failed to do so in any of the previous nine top-flight campaigns since hitting 56 in 2011/12.

Lewis Hall
completed a century of appearances in all competitions for Newcastle, while Sven Botman made his 100th league and cup start for the Magpies.

Newcastle haven't lost a top-flight game at the City Ground since May 1987 when beaten 1-2 there in the First Division - a sequence that now extends to ten games.

In the PL, the Magpies are unbeaten there in all eight visits - four wins and four draws. In all competitions, United's unbeaten run there is five since a 1-3 League Cup loss in August 2018.

Forest are winless against Newcastle anywhere in six league and cup meetings since their 3-1 PL success at Gallowgate on Boxing Day 2023.

Waffle

Newcastle's record of never losing in the Premier League at the City Ground was extended to eight matches on Sunday afternoon, but yet another unsatisfactory conclusion to a game this season saw Eddie Howe's side contrive to turn three points into one.

A under-strength Forest side beaten on Thursday in the Europa League looked in no position to achieve the victory that would have guaranteed their top-flight place, but United laboured to find a way past old boy Matz Sels despite their superiority.

That finally changed on 74 minutes when Harvey Barnes latched on to a through ball by fellow substitute Jacob Ramsey, holding off Morato before firing home a rising shot from 15 yards.

The black and whites then sought to increase their lead, only to be caught out by a rare piece of incisive play from the hosts with two minutes of normal time remaining.

Elliot Anderson's run into the United box to receive a return pass from James McAtee wasn't tracked properly by Bruno Guimaraes and the former Magpie was able to finish from a narrowing angle after Lewis Hall failed to intervene.

Nine of the eleven players that started last weekend's home victory over Brighton were retained; the injured Lewis Miley replaced by Lewis Hall at right back in order to accommodate Dan Burn in the left back position for a third successive game.

The other change saw Joe Willock make way for Nick Woltemade in midfield - a first start for the German since the home derby defeat in March coming after a week of media uncertainty about whether his supposed discontent could be dispelled by playing, or only improved by leaving.

Will Osula kept his place and worked himself into shooting position on three occasions during the first half, testing Sels twice - in the 10th and 43rd minutes - the latter after good work by Woltemade.

Other than that though, the Magpies mostly underachieved despite regularly robbing Forest their own half; a lack of quality in wide positions evident from Joelinton on the left and Jacob Murphy on the opposite flank, while messrs Barnes, Gordon and Elanga all looked on from the bench.

With little improvement after the interval, Barnes and Jacob Ramsey came on to increase United's goal threat and Bruno had two shots on goal within a minute that Sels just about managed to stop before Osula hit the bar with a free kick and Bruno failed to get sufficient power on the rebound.

Once ahead, Newcastle looked to increase their lead rather than back, but the arrival of Chris Wood and other subs saw Forest adopt a more direct approach, carving out a not-unexpected equaliser that ultimately secured their top-flight survival after West Ham were beaten later the same day.

The hosts then pushed forward in search of what would have seemed like an unlikely winner for most of the afternoon, but given Newcastle's recurring habit of throwing leads away, suddenly became all too believable. Kieran Trippier was introduced for the ailing Hall and a further collapse was at least successfully prevented in order to earn the point that mathematically ensured our own safety.

Our all-too familiar failings remained apparent however, despite a more forgiving schedule and more inane comments from Howe about learning lessons for the umpteenth time. As at Palace last month, an opportunity to punish a weakened home side distracted by European duty was passed up, with the outcome almost identical. It's not just Anthony Gordon that cannot wait for this season to finish.
