14 mins City effortlessly turned defence into attack and Marmoush
played in O'Reilly to fire in. 0-1

22 mins Sandro Tonali's corner kick was cleared as far as Lewis
Hall and his goalbound effort flicked off Rayan Ait-Nouri. 1-1

27 mins A calm cross from Haaland on the City right was nodded in by
O'Reilly. 1-2
Half time: City 2 United 1
Full time: City 2 United 1
Eddie Howe said:
"Considering everything we
have put into the last few weeks, that was a good performance.
Wasn't good enough but we went toe to toe with them. We were equals
in the game, we were well in it. Didn't defend the two goals well
enough, that's the disappointment really.
"A good effort physically. It's been a tough run of fixtures. I want
the players to empty, to give everything in the pursuit of winning.
I thought we played with a good plan. The two goals we didn't defend
well enough, two errors. But I'm pleased with the effort.
"The league table isn't what we wanted it to be. In
part, it's not based on tonight. We're heading in the right direction.
That's the most important thing because it means long-term we're going to be
fine.
"We're trying to win every game, not trying to
over-think games. We don't want to lose momentum. The feeling has been
strong, togetherness is strong, you see that in the second half.
"Overall, the players are all out, doing the best for
this football club.
"Belief was there right until the end, that (Harvey) Barnes shot at
the end which was a good save. You never quite know how the game will pan
out but it is important that you start well and the last few times we have
come here, we have conceded early.
"The end product, the last cross, the last
finish was not quite there. There were several occasions where we should
have done better. We've returned to a good way of playing, our way of
playing. We have done that over the last four games and as long as we get
that consistently I'll be happy."
On the push that made Burn offside and saw his goal
disallowed:
"I don’t know about that rule. I haven't seen the
push, so if that is the case, then I'll seek clarification. I only saw it
from the viewpoint that I thought he was offside so I didn't see the push
because I'm looking at a still frame really.
"I don't think we were on the right end of the
decisions today, but I don't want to go down that road. I'm not one of those
managers that wants to continually criticise officials, but I thought,
again, it was one that we probably didn't get the right end of the
decisions."
Pep Guardiola
said:
"Before we start the
press conference, let me say my first words to James Milner. Today he become
the player with most appearances in the PL history.
"We saw today until the end of the season this is how we need to play. We
missed the last pass. Erling (Haaland] today - without him it would
not be possible. All the guys were really good. Really pleased for the
performance.
"Every action, (Dan) Burn, Joelinton, they put
flat ball in behind, it's a really tough team.
"I’m not a big fan of getting Erling to defend
but he helped us. I know afterwards how the people hugged him and celebrated
with him and pay gratitude that he helped us because Newcastle made us do
that.
"I am only sad for him
because there were actions where we could make the last pass to him and we
couldn’t find him. It’s difficult for him to run, run, run and fight and
then not get the final ball to score goals. But sometimes the game is like
that.
"He’s an incredibly
generous player. Today is a performance I will never forget after what
Erling has done for us.
"I have incredible respect for
that (City) team. Winning three times in a row (against Newcastle), in a few
weeks we gave to go there again (in the FA Cup), what a nightmare.
"Massive (result), Newcastle is an incredible team, awesome in
physicality and speed they have up front. Physicality in the middle. Really
tough but the team was unbelievable.
"70% of the players have never been in that situation
(in a title race) and I don't play. So we have to live it, they know
that every game will be like this. Especially at home, with five home games
left.
"Today was the best crowd of the year, it was unbelievable with our people,
really proud to be manager of these incredible people and fans. Now we rest
three days, we need it, and then we play Leeds."
On Newcastle:
"In Champions League (at Qarabag) it was 5-0 at half-time, the
physicality and pace they have since Saudi Arabia took over the club, the
way they play is so difficult. So I am pleased with the way we played
today."
On Nico O'Reilly:
"Nico give us in the middle that physicality that we need. He now plays in
his position. He has always played that, he is so complete and so young. I
am really pleased the academy produced these incredible players, Nico, Phil
(Foden), Rico (Lewis)."

The 14th PL away game of the season saw Newcastle lose for the
seventh time, matching the number of defeats that they suffered in
the whole of 2024/25's 19 game away programme.
Kieran Trippier reached 150
games in all competitions for United (126 starts).
Jacob Murphy made his 250th appearance in all
competitions for Newcastle (143 starts).
Lewis Hall ended United's Premier League goal famine at the
Etihad Stadium, scoring 622 minutes after fellow full back DeAndre Yedlin
netted at the same end in September 2018.
Hall is the 13th different scorer in the PL for United so far
this season, two more than the 11 on target in 2024/25 but
significantly short of the 20 players on the PL scoresheet
during 2023/24.

Newcastle left the Etihad Stadium pointless
but not goalless on Saturday night, coming close to ending a run of 16 straight
league defeats there in the Manchester rain after a performance
rather better than we'd anticipated.
The mood music wasn't great: Pep Guardiola having the benefit of a free week
to prepare his squad, while opposite number Eddie Howe and his players made
a 5,000 mile return trip to Azerbaijan in midweek ahead of what was their
fourth successive away game.
Against that though was the fact the Magpies had found the net 11 times
during a trio of wins on the road and returned here having broken their goal
drought on this ground during the Carabao Cup loss earlier in the month.
Things started in familiar downbeat fashion with the hosts ahead within the
opening 15 minutes. That prompted a response the United though and both
Anthony Gordon and Malick Thiaw brought saves from Gianluigi Donnarumma
before Lewis Hall's deflected shot brought the sides level.
That goal was almost immediately cancelled out however, amid more question
marks about the generosity of the visiting defence as Nico O'Reilly easily
claimed his second of the night.
A committed second half display from Newcastle caused City some concern and
the celebrations at full time as they moved to within two points of leaders
Arsenal were tinged with relief. That's rather different to our usual thin
fare here, as games drift to the inevitable conclusion of an away loss, an
There was just one change to the side that won in Baku, Joe Willock moving
to the left wing as Harvey Barnes dropped to the bench and Jacob Ramsey
was restored to the starting line-up. An absence of cover meant that
35 year-old Kieran Trippier started his seventh game in 22 days.
City went ahead on 14 minutes when Omar Marmoush ran
unopposed to the edge of the area and played in O'Reilly to fire
past Nick Pope, although the 'keeper got a hand to it.
But eight minutes later a Sandro Tonali corner was partially cleared
to Hall and his shot hit Rayan Ait-Nouri and flew past Gianluigi
Donnarumma, ending a seven game wait stretching back to 2018 for the travelling Mags to
celebrate a PL goal at
this ground.
The joy division of the Toon Army would enjoy parity for just five minutes however, before Erling Haaland's
cross from the right allowed O'Reilly to nod in a simple second.
The unprecedented scenario of a second Newcastle goal in a PL game
here beckoned in the 42nd minute, as an
excellent Dan Burn header from Tonali's free-kick ended up in the City net.
However that was ruled out for offside against the scorer, despite replays showing
that Burn was shoved into an offside position by Rodri. The
justification is that no offence occurred as the ball wasn't in play,
therefore the VAR check confirming the offside has no remit to pull up the
foul.
Expectations were fairly low at the start of the second half, but City's
failure to push on and finish the game as a contest was matched by
increasing possession from United,
Bernardo Silva was lucky to escape a second yellow card for a body check on
Burn minutes after his first at the start of the second half, before Hall
blasted wide. A quick Joelinton free-kick should then have seen Anthony
Elanga release Anthony Gordon, but he delayed and the opportunity was lost.
Alack of clear chances meant the hoped-for equaliser ultimately
eluded the Magpies but the hosts
laboured and only really threatened further goals in second half
added time - due in part to Erling Haaland spending as much time battling
Dan Burn in the City area as the Newcastle one.
Pope did well to deny both hime and Phil Foden before play went to the other
end and Donnarumma reached a Barnes effort at the expense of a corner -
although it didn't look on target to us.
That brought one final chance and Pope came upfield, almost getting his head
to the ball before the final whistle sounded. Had he made contact, that
would have been an even more improbable goal than the one U21 'keeper Aidan
Harris scored the night before, but even to be pushing for an equaliser here
at that point in proceedings was an unexpected positive.
The unknown
pleasures of an away point here may have eluding the travelling
support yet again but given what we've routinely endured at this venue, it was certainly no disgrace to be
beaten tonight.
Barring an unforeseen clash in the Champions League, the fifth and
final meeting of these two sides will come in the FA
Cup at Gallowgate in a fortnight. Having already beaten Pep's
lot at SJP in the Premier League this season though, there's no reason to
believe we cannot repeat the feat.
