Stats

Matheos Ferreira became the first Newcastle player to register a hat-trick in a PL2 fixture since Elliott Anderson hit three in a 3-1 win away to Nottingham Forest during November 2021.

There were PL2 debuts for both Michael Mills and Isaac Moran.

Newcastle's managerless U21 side recorded their first PL2 win of 2026 on Friday, teenager Matheos Ferreira grabbing a hat-trick on an eventful night at Bodymoor Heath,

The Magpies made the best possible start when Ferreira opened the scoring on six minutes, latching on to an excellent ball from Scott Bailey and dashing in from the right hand side of the area before firing across Owen Asemota and into the far side of the goal.

United's strong press on the home defence paid dividends just three minutes later, when Asemota's hasty clearance fell to Park Seung-Soo outside the box and he promptly returned it over the 'keeper's head and into the unguarded net - a memorable way to score his first goal for the club.

Leading the line, 17 year-old Ferreira then converted a 15th minute penalty after Park tracked a long free kick and was unpended by Asemota in the box.

Villa had won their last game at Bodymoor Heath 5-4 and got on the scoresheet when Cole Brannigan shot past goalkeeper Aidan Harris four minutes before the interval. The home side then reduced the deficit further during added time when Brannigan turned provider to set up Brad Burrowes.

Both sides resumed after the interval with no changes and United made it 4-2 in the 53rd minute, when Kyle Fitzgerald was illegally tackled by Omar Khedr and Ferreira converted his second spot kick of the net to complete his hat-trick.

Back came Villa though and Alfie Lynskey scored with his first touch after coming off the bench, meeeting Trai-Varn Mulley's 58th minute centre and heading home.

Burrowes then hit the United crossbar and Mosquera then headed just wide of the target as Villa pushed for an equaliser.

The hosts were reduced to ten men on 81 minutes when TJ Carroll was shown a straight red card after dragging over debutant Michael Mills on the edge of the box, as took a precise pass from Ferreira and headed for goal. Anthony Munda took the resultant free kick from a central position, Asemota leaping to his left and turning the effort around the post.

There was to be no further scoring despite an additional 12 minutes as the green-clad Magpies recorded only their third PL2 victory of the season.
