18 mins Jacob Murphy dispossessed Calvin Bassey in midfield and made
his way into the right hand side of the Leazes box before coolly finishing
with a low effort that went in off the left post. 1-0

Half time: Newcastle 1 Fulham 0
56 mins Visiting
substitute Kevin crossed low from the left and Raul Jimenez's shot
rebounded off the underside
of the crossbar before Sasa Lukic headed the rebound in from almost
on the line.
1-1

90 mins
Will Osula sprinted over halfway after Bassey lost possession and took a return pass from Anthony Elanga on the United right before reaching the Fulham box and firing at Bernd
Leno.
The goalkeeper blocked that effort but the loose ball fell
into the path of Bruno Guimaraes who promptly supplied a first-time
finish into the net at the Gallowgate End. 2-1

Eddie Howe said:
"You didn't think we could get
that second goal: it was end-to-end.
"I thought it was a really attacking performance from both teams;
both teams were going for the win. We're delighted to get it
ourselves. I thought it was a really good last 20 minutes from us;
we were relentless in our pursuit to try and win. Eventually, one of
those chances fell for us.
"We haven't won enough games from late in the match, we have talked
about it, we have discussed it and today, we managed to do one. I
think those points are so precious, and it's more than that. I think
it's what you carry forward with you, there's the belief that you
can win from any situation, you can get points even when it doesn't
look like you will.
"I didn't think the performance was bad and I'm delighted how
we found a way to win. The strongest part of our game was the last
20 minutes; we hadn't started the second half well. We needed to inject a different energy onto the pitch (via the
substitutes). After that, we were the dominant team and you're just
hoping you take one of those chances.
"Late goals don't just affect the game you've won, it affects mood
and belief going forward. It can have a big knock-on effect. We've
had heartbreak the other way: this felt like a massive moment for
us."
On the most pleasing part of his team's performance:
"I think the chance creation for us. I think it's been an issue
for us this season but we were creating chances right from the first
few minutes when Nick (Woltemade) missed from a corner. I was really
pleased with that aspect of our play. Yes, we can be more clinical
but that's stuff to work on."
On Sven Botman:
"I think he's OK, yes. There was no concussion. It was a cut, but a
very good decision from the on-field physio to recommend I take him
off."
On Bruno:
Bruno, I’ve spoken about him many times, but the player
and the person together is a very special thing. His will to win, his drive,
his determination to be successful is there for us every day.
"His professionalism to
prepare himself to play is of the highest level and I always think you get
your rewards if you do that and 90th minute, he’s still going.
"How he’s ended up in the
box at that moment, I’d love to see back because there must have been a
moment where he’s had to put the burners on and foresee what’s going to
happen.
"But that’s down to his
motivation, so he’s a very special player and as I say, a special person and
we’re lucky to have him.”
On Will Osula:
"I'm really pleased with Will because he's not 100% fit, he's nursing an
ankle problem, so we've got to try and manage him correctly.
"But I think you've seen everyone that's watched us, a big development in his game, big
change in his confidence levels because of that. He's coming on the
pitch and influencing matches and he's got great attributes today.
"He did really, really well, I thought, to choose the right time to
shoot and Leno's made a good save, but our captain's there to
finish off the move, so it's a massive goal for us.
"I just think there's been big growth in his game. He's worked
tirelessly with Graeme Jones, who's done a lot of individual work
with him, as have all of our coaches, but Graeme in particular.
"I think the key thing for any player is when you come on the pitch, regardless of what minutes you
get, you impress. I think Will has done that gradually, so surely
I've entrusted him with more minutes.
"Now, the ankle injury that he's got is slightly curtailing that, because I don't want to make that
problem worse. I want him to feel really good when he comes on the
pitch. So we're sort of managing that.
"Fundamentally, it's his attitude. He wants to be here, he wants to play, and he's very
committed.”
On Fabian Schar reaching his double century:
"He's been an ever-present near enough since I've been here.
Obviously the challenge is greater this season with the arrival of
Malick and Sven's form and Dan's form.
"For all the defenders to step up and play is not easy with the
group we have. I'm delighted with how he played and that will do him
the world of good."
Marco Silva
said after watching his side lose a fourth
successive PL game:
"Overall, I have the feeling that we deserved
something from the game. We've been speaking about maturity. It's not just about
age, you have to be streetwise in some moments; we have to do the basics well,
feel the danger sometimes. We have to learn that football will punish you if
you're not on it every single moment. This is a difficult moment, all these
defeats in a row are not good at all.
"Difficult game, as you expect coming here to St James Park, the team full of
motivation after the good win and the good game they played last Tuesday and the
reality that we knew that always the beginning of the games here, they are
always very tough.
"They try to start always in the front foot,
pushing the crowd, and the crowd plays a big part always on the way they start
games here. And we knew that we have to go through those moments in the best way
possible, knowing that the reaction and the pressure is going to be huge in that
moment on ourselves.
"They had a big chance
with a wide free-kick very close to our box, one second ball that we should
have reacted stronger. Another good shot from the edge of the box.
"After the first 10-15
minutes, we started to settle our game. And we knew that if we settle our
game, it’s going to be difficult for them. And we did it.
“You know that if you lose the ball, with (Anthony)
Gordon, with (Jacob) Murphy and with a striker (Nick Woltemade)
that is very strong receiving the ball and linking up with the midfielders.
We knew all the situations, but we started to play in a way that we should
be proud of.
"I told our players that, these type of games,
we have to be very strong collectively, and I didn't see any difference
between both sides. I think in many moments of the game, (from a)
collective point of view, we were stronger. The way we dominated the game,
the way we were able to play in their offensive half.
"But football matches are
about individual decisions as well. We have to do the basic things well, and
we were punished by two moments.
"We have to give credits
for our opposition side, but when you give away two goals like we gave, it's
difficult to talk about credit and not blame ourselves. That is the thing –
simple.
"The first goal, our
central defender has the ball without pressure at all. We have to circulate
the ball from one side to the other, and of course, attract the pressure. We
tried to go against the pressure, not a normal thing in the way we prepared
ourselves, and we are punished by that.
"The reaction of the team was very good, I have to say. Coming for the end
of the first half, we were feeling that we had a chance with Raul, a good
chance with Emile as well. Good corner where Raul was alone to equalise the
game.
"And the reaction in the
second half went in the same direction. We scored a good goal, again, under
our identity, our principles – switching very well the game from one side to
the other, the right bodies inside the box. And we did it very well, very
good goal from us.
"And after the game restarted, both teams were trying
to win the game. They matched us, we matched them. They started to take more
risks as well. They pressed us high, they put a lot of energy in the attack
line.
"They were able to change all three players in their
attack line. They were able to put a player like (Sandro) Tonali in
the middle of the park, too.
"It’s their reality, and our reality right now is that
moment could be a moment for us with Rodrigo or with one of the two right
wingers, to freshen up our frontline. We are not able to do it. We are not
in conditions to do it right now.
"We tried to win, to go in a different direction with
Alex on the right, with Josh King and Tom Cairney to freshen up a bit our
middle line. They put us under pressure, but not with the big chances, apart
from one header from Bruno, not massive chances for them.
"The game was more with them on the front foot, but
under control from us. And one mistake again, a mistake that we cannot do.
And they punished us in a counter attack moment, when you have to do the
basics well, and we didn't.
"We have to face it. We have to improve, clearly. The
collective feelings from ourselves is that we were good, but we want more. I
don't like to take positives when the things are so simple to do, and we we
didn't do so well, like this afternoon.”

Three wins, three draws and three losses from Newcastle's opening nine
PL games replicates their 2024/25 start.
A first PL goal of the season for
Jacob Murphy saw him reach 20 strikes in that
competition. He's now two goals behind current colleague Joelinton and
ex-Mag Laurent Robert.
Bruno Guimaraes netted his third PL goal of the season, taking
him to 24 in that competition, one ahead of
both Miggy Almiron and Kieron Dyer. His next target is the 26 that
Michael Owen bagged.
Added to his goal in the FA Cup at Sheffield Wednesday, the Brazilian
now has 25 for the Magpies - and continues his liking for scoring late goals in PL home
games when United are attacking the Gallowgate End.
Today was his fifth such effort in the 85th minute or later, something Bruno referenced that in his post-match interview: "My whole family are here
today. My mum, dad, wife and kids - everyone in this stadium - so to score a
goal like that, end of the game at the Gallowgate End is so special."

For once this season, the decisive late goal in a game involving them
went the way of Newcastle.
With the score 1-1 and added time fast approaching on Saturday, livewire
substitute Will Osula's shot was blocked by visiting 'keeper Bernd
Leno, only for the lurking Bruno Guimaraes to dispatch the loose
ball into the Gallowgate End net and embark on a manic
sequence of celebrations.
That was enough for Eddie Howe's side to claim their second win of
the week and register back-to-back Premier League home successes for
the first time this season.
That finale looked unlikely after United began in similar fashion to
how they ended against Benfica on
Tuesday, Nick Woltemade and Jacob Murphy both hitting the goal frame
within six minutes.
Murphy then put his side ahead with a confident run and finish in the
18th minute, just as the green-clad visitors had begun to unsettle a
home side with one change from midweek, that of Joelinton returning
in place of
Jacob Ramsey.
Murphy found himself with an identical opportunity to grab his
and Newcastle's second goal of the game six minutes before the
interval, only for Leno to deny him.
Creating comparatively little but capitalising on what opportunities
came their way, the second half saw little improvement for United as
Marco Silva's side began to dominate midfield areas.
Their not-unexpected equaliser arrived on 56 minutes, substitute
Kevin crossing low from the left and Raul Jimenez's shot rebounding off the underside
of Nick Pope's crossbar before Sasa Lukic headed the rebound in - Sven Botman coming off worse
in a clash of heads and departing with what was feared to be
concussion but subsequently confirmed as a cut head. The scorer also
received treatment.
Bruno missed a glaring opportunity to restore United's lead when
heading over just seven minutes later after some mesmerising play
from Woltemade led to Gordon crossing from the left.
At that point, parallels with Fulham's last visit to Tyneside were strong;
Newcastle ahead thanks to Jacob Murphy's first half goal before conceding
twice to lose. As we noted that day, United "were capable of playing
excellently and terribly within the same move, never mind the same half."
Unlike that game though, today Howe had viable bench choices
to call upon and the introduction of Sandro Tonali, Anthony Elanga, Harvey Barnes and
most notably Will Osula proved just enough to tip the balance in United's favour.
And while United's captain took the plaudits for his winning
strike, the contribution of the player who had the least time to
make an impact was incalculable - Osula's pace visibly unsettling the Fulham
defence and inspiring those around him to greater efforts.
Mention too for Elanga's role in the goal, robbing Ryan Sessegnon on halfway after Osula's initial forward burst and
also Tonali's subtle shift of position in front of goal, denying Sander Berge
the chance of beating Bruno to the loose ball. On such small margins are
games won, drawn and lost.
