Goals

29 mins A patient build-up from United led to Sandro Tonali trying to pick out Kieran Trippier to the right of the Wolves goal with a diagonal pass that was intercepted by Rodrigo Gomes. His header fell to Jacob Murphy towards the right touchline and he passed back to Tonali on the urging of Trippier.

A simple return pass from the Italian found Murphy in a pocket of space with Joao Gomes loitering ahead of him and crossed to the far post, where Nick Woltemade out jumped Emmanuel Agbadou and planted his header inside the upright and past Sam Johnstone into the Leazes net.

As the scorer returned to his own half, the SJP crowd joined in a chorus of "Woltemade, ole, ole, ole" - the same tune that had echoed around Elland Road in our last game, describing Alexander Isak in somewhat unflattering terms.

We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"Massive, massive win for us. The lads performed very well. Hard-fought, disciplined, we could have scored more - but we'll take the win however it came.

"They put us under pressure in the first five minutes, but after that we got control of the game. A great cross from (Jacob) Murphy and great to see Nick (Woltemade) score.

"It was a great moment for Nick. I was very pleased with how he played. You saw his qualities, his technical qualities that we’ve been discussing and his intelligence, But most importantly for a striker, when the ball comes into the box, you need to be there – and he was. It was a great finish.

"I’m really pleased for him personally because that just settles him down and relaxes him. He wants to do well and he’s delighted to be here. I think it’s a great start.

"Nick’s very intelligent, very, very humble and a very good communicator. He understood everything we wanted him to do tactically. It was great to see him scoring, he took his goal brilliantly; it was a very strong debut.

"He's an unusual player. He's very distinctive. I think the more you watch him, the more you realise how different he is to the stereotypical size that he brings.

"Very creative. We saw flashes of that today, little touches and passes that can really make a difference and open up a stubborn defensive line. He’s also very funny; the lads have really taken to him.

"We needed the win. With Barcelona on the horizon you don't get many chances in this league, but we're happy with the three points today.

"I did not see much wrong with the team performance at all. I was really pleased with the commitment of the players."

On his defence:

"Really pleased with how we've defended. I think even the Liverpool game, we conceded three, but with ten men, I thought we were really good.

"We've had that resilient look about us again. Now, four games doesn't mean anything. It's a long season, we've got a lot of big games ahead, but certainly good signs for us.

"It's not just the defending players, although they should rightly get a lot of credit. It is the team, but the team is functioning very well at the moment.”

On Sandro Tonali:

"I think he covered every blade today. He was putting out a lot of fires on transitions for us.

"
I think he's done that superbly well. Sometimes it's not necessarily a quality that registers immediately, but the number of times that he reads the game, reads where the ball's going to drop, and he's there first, then you realise it's a massive skill of his. His athleticism, his speed.

"So, defensively, I think he's one of the reasons why we've been so strong. But, of course, then the other side of his game, his use of the ball and his creativity nearly scored a great goal for us today. So, I thought it was a great performance."

On combining Woltemade with the injured Yoane Wissa:

"It is something we can do and we will look at. I do not know if we want to change the tactical framework too much but I will never rule anything out."

On his first experience of Woltemade:

"It would’ve been last season, watching quite a bit of German football. I enjoy watching as much football as I can, and after seeing him be outstanding in the Under-21 tournament, it became a genuine interest in the player.

"He’s an unusual player and very distinctive. The more you watch him, the more you realise how different he is to the stereotypical size that he brings. He’s very, very creative, and we saw flashes of that today with little touches and passes. They can really make a difference for us and open up a stubborn defensive line.

"We’ve now got a lot of work to do with him physically to perform consistently in this league."

The goalscorer added:

"The Premier League is quite hard, I had to go out because I had cramps. For the first game I think it is OK to come in (be substituted).

"It was amazing, the atmosphere, the team played really good balls, they involved me a lot. I think we did quite good.

"I just try to play my game, like to drop off from the nine and come to where I can get the balls. The guys are already good today with me I want to play my game also here.

"Today was a good game for it but there could be games where it is hard. I want to adapt to this league, it is really hard. I want to look forward and keep going.

"I was just here for four days now, so everything was new for me. I was putting that bit away and I was focusing on myself today.

"Everybody was happy, I was happy. The Premier League is hard but I want to adapt and the coach gave me such a good feeling, I knew what to do.

"It was a great debut - can't be better. We won, I scored, we did well. It's really important that we won. 'Murph' told me be ready for the cross and it came to me beautifully. I didn't know what to do (after I scored) - I was just happy!

"Playing against Barça in the Champions League? That’s unbelievable. I’m very happy. It looks like my first Champions League match will be against a top team, and I’m looking forward to it. I think the atmosphere will be incredible."

They Said

After his side set a club record of starting a season with four losses, Vitor Perreira said:

"I’m very happy with my team, proud of my players, the way that we faced Newcastle away, full stadium, but I saw my team playing with bravery, tactical organisation, creating problems, strategic problems and we created two chance to score before them.

"This is the time to be together, not to complain, because I'm very proud. I believe that we can increase the level of the team if we have time to work with the team, if we had time to work on the pitch, we can increase the level.

"The first week we will have time to be together and to work together on the pitch, it will be the next week for the first time in this season. What I saw this game was tactically, mentally, a team with energy, with spirit, with belief in themselves, and this is for me is the way to increase our level and to start to getting points.

"Last season we had defeats in four games in a row, but we never lost our focus. We never lost our way to improve. This is the way to improve, mentally and tactically speaking. It means that we know what we must do with the team, and the team knows what we can do to improve, and this is time to be patient and to support the team.

“I just want to finish a game proud of my players, proud of my team, and today I'm proud of my team. Today, I'm happy. Of course, worried because we didn't get any points, but this is the way, I want to see my team competing like this.

"We need to do it
(play different systems). With the same base, we can change the system, because this is something that I thought last season, but it was not the time, because we didn't have time to work on systems. Now, I think with the same base, we can create surprises for the opponent.

“When we analyse opponents, we try to explore the spaces that they will usually explore, and we try to control the best players. We try to control the movements of the other team. But if you’re not sure how they play, I think it is an advantage for us.

"We spent the last two weeks working with eight players
(due to the number of international call-ups and the injury to Jorgen Strand Larsen). It's better to start with the players that stayed with me for a few days and try to prepare with eight for the match against Newcastle.

“After, we need a striker. We had one training with Tolu. He’s a different player, he’s physically strong, he gives us the possibility to play long ball and to hold this ball and to give time for us to appear. He did well, of course he is not in the physical condition to do better.

“Krejci can play as a midfielder, can play as a central defender, with quality, with good decisions, because he has the skills and is good for us because he is a player that can do more than one positions.”

Stats

Newcastle's first victory since beating Chelsea at SJP last May ended a five game winless PL run including last season and got them off them off the mark at the fourth attempt this time round:

Three points meant that the Magpies avoided a third successive home loss for the first time under the leadership of Eddie Howe. The last time United lost three on the bounce at SJP was in early 2021, when Steve Bruce's side were beaten by Leicester City, Leeds United and Crystal Palace.

Nick Woltemade
became the 273rd different player Newcastle have fielded in the Premier League.

Bremen-born Woltmade is the sixth German-born player to appear for United in the PL, after Alan Neilson (Wegburg), Dietmar Hamann (Waldsassen), Joselu (Stuttgart), Loris Karius (Biberach) and Malick Thiaw (Dusseldorf). Odysseas Vlachodimos (Stuttgart) never played in the PL.

He's the third full German international to have donned our colours after Hamman and Thiaw.

Woltemade's goal made him Newcastle's 171st different scorer in the PL and the fifteenth to have netted on his debut. His effort came 32 years to the day since the first Magpie did so in the PL - Alex Mathie against Sheffield Wednesday at the same end of SJP.

Newcastle have now scored at least once in all 21 Premier League meetings with Wolves.

Three clean sheets
in their opening four PL fixtures this season for the Magpies is something they've managed just twice before in that competition: 1995/96 and 2011/12.

Eddie Howe saw his side collect three points at SJP without Alexander Isak for the first time since defeating Fulham in December 2023. Away from home United's last PL victory without the Swede was at Forest in February 2024.

125 days after the opportunity had last presented itself, Eddie Howe and his players posed for a post-match victory photograph in their dressing room at teatime on Saturday.

Many of those captured were familiar from previous gatherings, but among a smattering of new faces was a statuesque lad with scraggy hair with the look of a modern day Rudi Voller.

Step forward Newcastle United's latest goalscoring hero, Nick Woltemade.

The club's new record signing arrived from international duty and barely had time emulate Dan Burn in stooping through SJP doorways before finding himself leading the attack of a side in dire need of a victory to kickstart their season, given the run of games that follow this one.

The absence of Anthony Gordon due to suspension and Yoane Wissa due to injury gave Woltemade the opportunity to make an instant impact and he duly did so; scoring a goal isn't representative of his output despite his size and almost setting up a couple more for his new colleagues.

The Magpies couldn't have asked for better opposition on such an occasion than the Premier League's basement side. Lacking the early season fervour of a promoted side and habitually leaving Tyneside empty-handed, Wolves occasionally threatened up front but looked vulnerable at the other end.

And although Vitor Perreira was able to introduce his own new six foot six inch forward, Jorgan Strand Larsen - the player who could have been lining up for the hosts - was deprived of the opportunity to show SJP what they missed out on due to an achilles problem.

The visitors had three chances to take the lead early in the opening period, the first coming within ten seconds of the kick-off when Rodrigo Gomes ran into the box and Nick Pope tipped his shot wide.

Pope then denied Hee-Chan Hwang before Jacob Murphy had United's first effort with a shot that flew past the left post.

Gomes then went close with a header that squirmed past Pope's right upright before Murphy somehow failed to hit the back of the net from close range with the goal gaping.

Harvey Barnes went tumbling under a dubious challenge from Yerson Mosquera as he entered the box but a VAR review failed to see it as a red card or a penalty.

Then came Woltemade's moment; Murphy crossing to the far post for the debutant to  majestically head home at the Leazes End just before the half hour mark: a goal evoking spirits of Magpie forerunners in our minds, including but not limited to Wyn Davies, Mick Harford and Duncan Ferguson.

That goal capped an excellent first outing in English football from the forward, who showed some good touches and awareness and instantly gelled with his new team mates.

Sandro Tonali - who seemed to get better and better as the game developed - almost made it 2-0  before half-time when hitting the inside of the post with a shot from the edge of the box.

That chance came shortly after Murphy had a goal disallowed for Barnes being offside in the build-up; Murphy also coming desperately close with a curling shot shortly before that.

After the break United dominated possession without creating many clear chances but as the game wore on and both sides made multiple substitutions, the nagging feeling that the visitors could nick an undeserved equaliser grew.

Certainly the home side's hopes of a clinching second goal receded with the withdrawal of cramp victim Woltemade - Will Osula's contribution enthusiastic but as ham-fisted as Harvey Barnes had proven to be before he made way for Elanga (who barely touched the ball).

Thankfully though, Pope was rarely troubled before referee Chris Kavanagh blew after six added minutes amid audible relief.

A memorable debut then for Woltemade and a timely three points, although his goal will live longer in the memory than the match. After numerous false starts and misadventures, it's a relief to be talking about football again - and a winning team.

There's little time for reflection though, before the Champions League campaigns begins with a mega tie on Tyneside. Wissa and Jacob Ramsey may not be in contention, but there are enough options for Howe to rotate his squad as the games come thick and fast in the coming weeks.

That represents a different challenge to 2023/24, when his side almost named itself across six ties.
