24 mins
A loose pass ended up with Jacob Murphy's and he found
Kieran Trippier overlapping down the right flank. Tripps fired a low ball to
Alexander Isak on the edge of the box and after his first touch saw the ball
bounce up, the Swede delicately touched it inside a defender to Sandro Tonali.
The Italian who ran on to it and volleyed the ball home from the right hand side
of the box, beyond
goalkeeper Altay
Bayindir inside
the far the post at the Leazes End. Poetry in motion.
1-0

37 mins
Diogo Dalot took possession on the right hand side of his
own half, charging upfield unopposed. Reaching the edge of the home area he had
Joshua Zirkzee to his left, but elected to play in Alejandro Garnacho on his
right.
The Argentinean striker took a touch before clipping a shot past Nick Pope that
hit the far post and went in. His chin-stroking celebration didn't age well.
Garbacho, as our predictive text had it... 1-1
Half time: Magpies 1 Devils 1

49 mins Tino Livramento
received the ball down the left and skipped past Dalot before crossing to the
far post. It eluded everyone but Murphy prevented the ball going out and had the
presence of mind to cross for Harvey Barnes, who converted from two yards
out. 2-1

64 mins
Noussair Mazraoui stumbled inside his own half, gifted the
ball to Harvey Barnes. The winger charged infield, eluding half-hearted
challenges from Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof and Leny Yoro and then placed
the ball into the top corner past Bayindir.
Had he not netted, then a certain Swedish striker perfectly positioned to his
left in the hope of a pass that never arrived would have had doubtless voiced
his frustrations. 3-1

77 mins
Another blunder from the visitors saw
Bayindir kick the ball weakly forward but only as far as Joelinton outside
the area. He headed it into the path of Bruno Guimaraes, who had
all the time in the world to pick his spot and place the ball past the
goalkeeper.
On a day when Wor Flags paid tribute to Kevin Keegan, Bruno's finish was
reminiscent of KK's debut strike against QPR's Peter Hucker back in August
1982.
4-1

You've seen United, now go fourth and multiply
Jason
Tindall said:
"I said to the players before
the game we need a performance the manager would be proud of.
"I’ve just seen a message from him before I came to do the
press, congratulating the performance from everybody and from the
team. He was able to watch it, and I’m sure that would have lifted
his spirits.
"He trusted the decision we’d make,
we’ve been working together for a long time. He was able to communicate
earlier on in the week, then put his trust in everyone to put in a performance
he’d be proud of, and the boys delivered.
"We had to make a couple of tweaks at
half-time, we were a few yards off on our press. The lads went back out and
delivered their tactical executions superbly well.
"I'm super proud of the players. Not
surprised because we've got a fantastic group of players - we've got some great
leaders within that.
"It's times like this when the manager
is not there, when he's not there to lead the team, you have to step up
individually and collectively.
"Everybody certainly did that today, so really, really proud of the players
to go out and deliver the performance that they did today against a good
Manchester United team.
"I think the team probably picked
itself in recent performances.
"Eddie put his trust in myself and the work and the rest of the support
staff to go out and deliver the performance. He trusted that if decisions needed
to be made and tweaks needed to be made, that we'd make the right choices and
make the right decisions.
"Thankfully, that happened today and as I say, I'm sure he'll be really
proud of it.”
On Howe's condition:
"No updates. I haven't really had the
opportunity to speak to him properly.
"Me and Eddie have worked together for 17 years, and in that time he's
never missed more than a day or two, so he must have found it hard to be missing
this week.
"We went out and delivered a
performance he would be proud of. Hopefully he is back very soon."
Tindall oversaw the side with coach Graeme
Jones for the second time, the pair previously taking charge in November 2021
for a 3-3 home draw with Brentford.
That came about when Howe tested positive for
COVID ahead of his first game as Magpies boss. He watched the game on TV while
isolating in a nearby hotel.
NUFC statement re: Eddie Howe, Saturday:
"The Magpies' head coach was admitted to hospital late on Friday evening
having felt unwell for a number of days.
"Medical staff kept Eddie in hospital overnight for further tests, which
are ongoing. He is conscious and talking with his family, and is continuing to
receive expert medical care.
"Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a
speedy recovery, and further updates will follow in due course.
"Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the team at St. James' Park on
Sunday, supported by the club's first team staff."
Ruben
Amorim said:
“We did a lot of mistakes and they were better than us, stronger than
us.
"Suffering the second goal in the beginning of the second half hurt us a
lot and then we did mistakes during the game that helped Newcastle to win the
game.
"It’s a team thing. We are doing a
lot of mistakes in certain games that give confidence to the opponent, give
goals, and then it’s hard to cope with everything.
"We had the first chance, we didn’t score, they have their chance, they
score. Then they took control of the game. We scored to draw but then second
half, we were suffering in the second play of the game, it’s hard for our team
and we did a lot of mistakes.
"We had to make rotation because we are trying to recover in two days from
each game but trying to win this game also. So, let’s focus on the next one.
"We cannot change this game, this
performance, this season. We just need to think of the future, we have one
competition that we can win a trophy (Europa League) and go to the
Champions League next season.
"The good thing this season is we have been through a lot so we know how
these moments are really difficult, but we proved already, not to other people,
but to ourselves that we can get up and fight again. So, we have to do that on
Thursday (at home to Lyon
On the omission of goalkeeper Andre Onana:
"We are going to prepare to choose the best eleven that we think can win. I
left him at home because any situation of the game, the cameras would be on him
and he was not playing, on the bench but feeling the pressure, feeling the
moment.
"So, for me, it was one thing or another – you play or you stay at home.
It was my choice.”
Following a 2-0 success at Old Trafford in
December, Newcastle gained the victory that sealed a first league win double
over Manchester United since 1930/31.
The Magpies registered three successive home
league wins over the Red Devils for the first time ever in the Premier
League and the first time since the 1968/69, 1969/70 and 1970/71 seasons.
Newcastle scored more than three goals
in a game against Manchester United for only the third time in 60 Premier
League meetings, today's feat coming after the 5-0 home win in October 1996 and
the 4-3 success at SJP in September 2001.
Newcastle have now taken six points off six
teams this season, Manchester United beaten both home and away along with
Leicester City, Spurs, Wolves, Southampton and Nottingham Forest
Sandro Tonali scored his fifth
goal of the season, three of which have come in the Premier League. He now has
four PL goals to his name. The Italian also completed a half century of
competitive games for Newcastle (36 starts).
Harvey Barnes made it eight PL
goals this season; he's now second top scorer behind Alexander Isak, one ahead
of Jacob Murphy and two clear of Anthony Gordon. Barnes now has 13 as a
Magpie, level with Hatem Ben Arfa. Combined with his Leicester City haul, he's
netted 48 PL goals.
Bruno Guimaraes netted his 20th
PL goal, two ahead of Anthony Gordon and two behind Joelinton. United's captain
has four PL strikes to his name this season.

Kieran Trippier wore a t-shirt with the slogan MISS YOU MARVIN FEK
- a tribute to the late Marvin Morgan, on what would have been his 42nd
birthday. Manchester-born Morgan passed away in December 2021 due to a brain
injury he'd been diagnosed with in 2014.

We may not have headlined our musings
with a variant on the "Howay 5-0" headline from almost 30
years ago, but had he occupied the seat offered to him at
St.James' Park on Sunday, elements of that memorable performance in 1996
would have been familiar to Kevin Keegan.
A fourth successive Premier League
victory maintained Newcastle's charge towards Champions League qualification;
the most comprehensive dismantling of Manchester United since KK was in
the home dugout propelling the 2025 incarnation of the Entertainers into fourth place.
The names may have changed but the excitement levels generated by the
attack-minded hosts were as timeless as the crowd reaction; roars of
approval ringing out whenever opposition players were hunted down near to
their own goal and physical battles for possession were won.
Goals from Sandro Tonali and one from Bruno Guimaraes reminiscent of
Keegan's debut effort against QPR at the same end book-ended a brace from
Harvey Barnes, who repaid the decision to name an unchanged team for the
fifth game despite the renewed availability of Anthony Gordon.
While the contribution of one former Magpie boss was celebrated, the
current incumbent was also audibly supported in his unexpected absence.
The noise generated may not have quite reached Eddie Howe in his RVI bed,
but the level for support him was evident in the TV coverage he watched.
That soundtrack included a mass rendition of "Eddie Howe's black
and white army" before the cheers that greeted the home side's
opener midway through the first half - earlier celebrations prompted by
Joelinton's effort in the first minute quickly stifled by an offside
flag.
What might have come as a shock to KK though was what appeared in place of
where a feared football team once trod. United in name only, the visitors
looked devoid of leadership, motivation or inspiration as they close in on
their worst league finish since suffering relegation in 1974.
Alexander Isak teed up Tonali to
volley past Bayindir, the Premier League
debutant denying the top scorer a second goal that would have
reflected the balance of play. A rare venture into the home box though saw Diogo Dalot play in Alejandro
Garnacho to level shortly before half time.
Whether it's a measure of our current confidence or the visible decline of
the visitors, the equaliser brought mild frustration rather than
consternation. The same line-up returned following what Tindall termed
"tweaks" to repel the Red Devils and the lead was promptly
restored within five minutes.
Bruno Guimaraes found Tino Livramento on
the left just inside the opposition half and the full back who spent much
of the game in an attacking role shimmied past Dalot before laying a low
pass across the six yard box that reached Jacob Murphy beyond the back
post.
His astute layoff across goal was
met by the advancing Barnes who converted from close range and the winger was celebrating his third goal
of the week within quarter of an hour, capitalising on Noussair Mazraoui's
stumble and setting off for goal before supplying a memorable
finish.
Then came Bruno's effort to round off the scoring and
seal
Newcastle's first league double over the Old Trafford side in 94 years; Gordon returning from injury and suspension to appear in the
closing stages and almost catching out the beleaguered Bayindir.
That song about Shearer costing more than Solskjaer echoed around the
ground early on, but those who stoically stayed in the away section were
serenaded by a rewrite of the Old Trafford Joy Division / Ryan Giggs ditty
in honour of Barnes, followed by their own "you've seen
United..." chant.
And rather than the usual "Moving on up" from Primal
Scream that invariably follows home wins, a moment of inspiration from the SJP DJ saw
a slice of "Step On" by the Happy Mondays served up - melons were
certainly twisted down Matt Busby Way.
Games against this lot always carry more weight to us, meaning that the
satisfaction of defeating them is heightened. The current Newcastle squad may have
avenged their 2023 Wembley defeat in meetings since then, but our grudges go way back
further than that and we're not alone....
We may well have won the battle on that day in 1996, but Fergie's lot
still won the war in terms of the title. The difference between then and
now is that today's victory was the expected outcome though, rather than
what was a periodic and unexpected treat. Not going into this fixture as
the underdog is uncharted territory for several generations of black and
whiters.
A renaissance may well follow with or without Ruben Amorim, but there's
genuinely not a player in that team that you'd take at this point in time.
And as for Gary Neville's comments about Isak emulating Andy Cole's move
30 years ago, they're as fanciful as his pre-season predictions are
proving to be.
Off-field issues surrounding Manchester United may well be replicated here
over time - specifically alienating their core fanbase - but they can wait
for another day. For the sheer novelty of it, we're just revelling in this
moment of superiority, we've waited long enough.
Next up is our game in hand against Crystal Palace at Gallowgate on Wednesday night,
where another three point haul would raise us up to third - five points
clear of the team in sixth place.
For Newcastle to have successfully discredited the notion of choosing between competing for
trophies or concentrating on the league this season is testament to the
man who went where messrs Keegan, Robson, Rafa and all of the others couldn't.
Get well soon Eddie.
