The Magpies said goodbye to 2025 with a hoped-for away victory at
beleaguered Burnley, but took until second half added time to seal
the win despite them racing into a two goal lead inside the opening
seven minutes.
From the moment that Yoane Wissa added to Joelinton's early effort
though, Eddie Howe's return to Turf Moor was
amazingly uncomfortable and after Josh Laurent pulled one back
midway through the first half, another unwelcome opposition comeback looked
distinctly possible.
Thankfully the crossbar, Nick Pope and Fabian Schar kept the
Clarets at bay before Martin Dubravka's slip left Bruno Guimaraes to
convert a 30 yard chip into the unattended Cricket Field Stand goal
amid palpable relief.
It was a night when United could easily have scored half a dozen and
conceded a similar number; both sides creating and wasting a
boatload of chances. Two notable goal line clearances also
denying a goal for either side.
Howe made four changes to the side beaten at Old Trafford on Boxing
Day. Yoane Wissa handed a first Premier League start for the club
while Pope, Joelinton and Harvey
Barnes all returned to the eleven - the latter in his home town.
The Magpies got their first goal after just over a minute when
Anthony Gordon's deflected cross fell to Joelinton who volleyed it
inside the far post with Dubravka well beaten.
Wissa doubled the lead after a goalmouth scramble saw Barnes' shot
fumbled; Bruno knocking the loose ball to Wissa whose first effort
was cleared off the line by Kyle Walker but then turned home by the
number nine - whose debut PL goal celebrations were delayed until a
VAR check confirmed no foul by Bruno in the build-up.
More goals should have followed but Wissa put a far post header
following a corner wide from
just yards out and Barnes was denied by Dubravka when through
on goal.
At the other end Schar cleared off the line to prevent a
leveller when Marcus Edwards had beaten Pope. This came after
Laurent's well-struck volley had reduced the deficit and survived a
VAR check for offside.
The second half saw United largely penned back in their own
half, Pope saving well from Edwards before Laurent's looping
header hit the bar and Loum Tchaouna headed wide soon after when
left unattended towards the back post.
Malick Thiaw's goalbound flick on a Joelinton header was nodded off the line
by Bashir Humphreys while a rare piece of flowing play
saw Jacob Murphy fire over from close in, although Wissa was deemed
offside in the build-up. Gordon's glaring miss from similar range
would have counted though.
Scott Parker's side kept plugging away into added time but when a hopeful ball
forward by Sandro Tonali was messed up by Dubravka, Bruno showing
great
composure to find the unguarded goal and secure a vital victory.
The win was more important than the painful performance and a
result that was clearly a relief for manager, players and fans
is
hopefully a staging post to somewhere.
Three points took United into the top half of the table, although that will
change after Thursday's games.
Full match report to follow.
Team: Pope, L.Miley, Schar, Thiaw, Hall, Joelinton (Willock
90+4), Tonali, Guimaraes, Gordon (Ramsey 80), Wissa (Woltemade 80),
Barnes (J.Murphy 71).
Subs n/u: Ramsdale, Alabi, A.Murphy, Neave, Shahar.
Booked: Joelinton.
Bruno Guimaraes avoided a booking in the club's 19th PL game,
removing the threat of a one
game suspension.
Goals: Joelinton 2, Wissa 7, Guimaraes 90+3.
BFC: Dubravka, Walker, Esteve (Humphreys 15), Ekdal, Lucas Pires,
Laurent, Florentino (Ndayishimiye 88), Ugochukwu (Barnes 88),
Edwards, Broja, Tchaouna (Bruun Larsen 74).
Subs n/u: Weiss, Anthony, Banel, Pimlott, Sonne.
Booked: Walker, Florentino.
Goal: Laurent 23.
Crowd: 21,020. Travelling
fans have moved to the opposite end of the Cricket Field
Stand since Newcastle's last visit, reached via a different set of
turnstiles.
Sadly access to and movement around the away area was actually worse
than previously, which took some doing.
Elongated ticket checks and searches also delayed entry for away
supporters.
Eddie Howe said:
"It was a massive win for us. I don't think it really matters in
terms of how we did it, we just needed to do it. It was a really
strong start from us, in recognition of how important the game was
for us.
"I can't praise the players enough for how we battled through. It
was never going to be easy tonight. That second half was a massive
45 minutes for us, we needed to get over the line and full credit to
the players for how they saw the game out and the character of the
group.
"I think we've been close before. In my opinion, we're moving in the
right direction in terms of level of performance.
"I think over time, if you continue to play well - I thought
Manchester United was a case in point, I don't think we played
badly, we had chances to get something from the game but didn't take
them - then over time, you will win games with the quality of
players we have.
"I think that showed today. We're not at our most confident level at
the moment, I think that's obvious. But I do think it's a confidence
issue more than anything else and the only way to resolve that is to
win games."
Referee: Robert Jones - third Toon posting of the season for the
Merseyside-based official, following on from the 0-0 draw at
Bournemouth and 1-3 loss at West Ham.
VAR: Nick Hopton.
Stats:
Two goals within the opening seven minutes represents
the quickest start that Newcastle have ever made in the 584 Premier
League games they've played away from SJP.
It's marginally quicker than the 2-0 lead they opened up at
Leicester City in seven minutes on Boxing Day 2022, thanks to a
Chris Wood penalty (3 minutes) and Miggy Almiron's strike (7
minutes). United won that one 3-0.
The quickest before that came at West Bromwich Albion in February
2009 when Damien Duff (2 minutes) and Peter Lovenrkrands (9 minutes)
initiated a 3-2 success.
That exceeded the 10 minutes that it took the Magpies to establish a
two goal lead at Manchester United during October 2018 (Kenedy 7 and
Muto 10). They lost 2-3.
Joelinton's 65 second strike is the second quickest by any
Magpie so far this season, beaten by Malick Thiaw's 52 second
header in the win at Everton in November.
In PL games, we make it the eleventh fastest:
Jan 2003 Manchester City (h) Alan Shearer 10 seconds
Dec 2020 West Brom (h) Miguel Almiron 20 seconds
Dec 2024 Ipswich Town (a) Alexander Isak 26 seconds
Jul 2020 Liverpool (h) Dwight Gayle 26 seconds
Nov 2025 Everton (a) Malick Thiaw 52 seconds
Jan 1996 Arsenal (h) David Ginola 56 seconds
Mar 2004 Charlton Athletic (h) Alan Shearer 57 seconds
Apr 2023 Spurs (h) Jacob Murphy 61 seconds
Feb 2009 West Brom (a) Damien Duff 64 seconds
Mar 2018 Southampton (h) Kenedy 64 seconds
Dec 2025 Burnley (a) Joelinton 65 seconds
United
registered a first PL win double of the season after the 2-1
home victory earlier this month, although they are yet to face
Crystal Palace at home or away.
The Magpies lengthened their winning PL run
against Burnley to eight games, completing a fourth
consecutive win double.
They last lost to the Clarets in December 2019, a 0-1 defeat in
Lancashire seeing Martin Dubravka, Joelinton and Fabian Schar in the
United line-up and Nick Pope in the home side.
A fourth consecutive three point return at Turf Moor was Newcastle's
fifth win in eight visits, alongside two draws and one defeat. They
are yet to keep a clean sheet here in the PL though and haven't done
so in any top flight visit since a 1-0 First Division success on
Boxing Day 1975.
Yoane Wissa became the 173rd
different player to have netted for United in the PL and the 23rd
from that total to have been born in France.
Joelinton made his 200th PL appearance for the Magpies
(172 starts), bagging his 23rd strike in that competition.
That takes him one ahead of Laurent Robert in the club scoring list,
level with Miggy Almiron and Kieron Dyer.
Bruno Guimaraes scored his sixth PL goal of the season - his
fifth coming against Burnley at SJP. That total is one fewer than
his most prolific PL campaign, registering seven during 2023/24.
The Brazilian's 27th effort in that competition takes him one
ahead of Michael Owen and level with Craig Bellamy.

West End Boys

Following a successful run at Newcastle's Theatre Royal - with more

London's West End in January.
Filmed as "Purely Belter", Jamie Eastlake's stage adaptation

tale of two Toon fans
and their quest for their holy grail of Newcastle season tickets, despite being
totally skint....
Tickets are on sale now for performances at the Aldwych Theatre
between January 13th and 24th 2026, with seat prices starting from
just
£10 available online
here
(FAO anyone buying theatre tickets may wish to note that NUFC are in

Update:
Cordero claim

Newcastle have reportedly recalled reserve winger
Antonio Cordero from his unproductive loan
posting at Belgian Pro League KVC Westerlo.
The 19 year-old Spanish youth international joined United from
Malaga in the summer and was sent out to Westerlo, only to be
restricted to eight substitute outings.
It's now claimed Cordero will make a temporary return to Spain
for the second half of the season, with second tier side Cadiz said
to be his next temporary destination.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log
on and complete your purchase regardless.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered
to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.
Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are
gone.
2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.
2025/26 CL away tickets are
€50 or less.

Born Or Died:
1897 Willie Bertram born, Brandon, Durham. (1920-21) Inside left who saw service during World War I with the Durham Light Infantry,
arriving at St.James' Park from Durham City for £150. Making a senior team debut for in a 3-0 home
win over Manchester City in April 1920, Willie appeared in the
next two games but was never called up again, United recouping their outlay from Norwich City in April 1921.
Returning to the North East in 1922 with Leadgate and Durham City,
Willie belatedly established himself as a professional with
Rochdale, playing over 200 times during six years at Spotland
after moving there in 1925.
Following a brief spell with Accrington Stanley, he
returning to his native County Durham in 1931. Employed as a publican and later finding work in the coal industry,
his death came in October 1962. 1950 Ray Ellison born, Newcastle. (1968-73) Full back who came through the junior ranks and was pressed into service on both flanks for six games during the 1971/72 season - beginning with a 0-1 loss to Derby County at St. James' Park in October 1971 However, we lost five of those and Ray's only first team success was a 2-1 home win over Halifax Town in the League Cup. Moving to Roker Park the following season with fellow SJP fringe players David Young and Ron Guthrie, Ray failed to make an impact and signed for Torquay United after just a trio of senior mackem appearances. A career in non-league followed, with spells at Workington, Gateshead and Tow Law before a stint as player-coach of Whitley Bay and boss of Alnwick Town. Ray also worked as a taxi driver following his return to the North East.
1984 Calvin Zola-Makongo born, Kinshasa, DR Congo. (2001-03)
Arriving on Tyneside in 1999 when his mother was granted temporary asylum, Calvin joined Newcastle's Academy from Walker Central Boy's Club. Netting a hat-trick on his competitive debut for the U17s in August 2001 (in a 5-0 win over Watford), Zola went on to score 16 goals in 19 games, amid doubts as to whether he was in the correct age group. The following season saw him appearing at both U19 and reserve level for United, where his 6'4" height stood out slightly less.... August 2003 proved to be pivotal in Zola's career - scoring twice in a 4-2 reserve win against Everton at Southport (with some kid called Rooney scoring for the Toffees). Among the Haig Avenue crowd was Oldham
Athletic boss Ian Dowie and within days Zola had moved to Boundary Park on loan. Zola netted seven times in 28 games for the Latics before returning to SJP in May 2004 - Dowie having moved on by then. Tranmere Rovers moved into sign him on a free transfer and Calvin made over 100 appearances at Prenton Park (many as sub) in two years, scoring 18 goals.
He also won a major off-field battle, making a successful
appeal against the Home Office revoking his UK residency
visa, which had invalidated his work permit and prevented
him from playing. June 2008 saw Calvin join Crewe Alexandra at a cost of £200K, with his home debut in a pre-season game against Premier new boys Hull City seeing him register a hat-trick. An injury-hit first season at Gresty Road saw Zola score just five times but 18 strikes in 2009/10 had scouts watching again. No move was concluded but he struggled for fitness the following season, joining Burton Albion on loan in January 2011. Becoming a full-time Brewer that summer following his release by Crewe, Calvin was a regular starter and scorer for them over the following two seasons. Unexpectedly signing for SPL side Aberdeen in June 2013, he netted three times but failed to hold down a regular place at Pittodrie and left after a year. Returning to England with Stevenage, injury decimated his time at the League Two club and he was released in May 2015, having an unsuccessful trial at Luton Town ahead of the following season.
Calvin's social media accounts later listed his occupation
as a fashion blogger. 1987 Seydou Doumbia born, Abidjan, Ivory Coast. (2016)
A deadline day loan capture from AS Roma for the remainder of the season, striker Seydou began his career with club sides in his native Ivory Coast. Moving to Japan in 2007, a first experience of European football came a year later with Young Boys Berne in Switzerland. By January 2010 his goalscoring form had brought about a claimed £12m switch to CSKA Moscow and Roma paid £11m for him in January 2015. Failing to settle in Italy, Doumbia returned to CSKA for the first half of the 2015/16 campaign before joining Newcastle. However, his impact in black and white was zero, playing 45 minutes of a reserve game (his only outing at SJP) and then debuting in a 1-5 Premier League loss at Chelsea. Completing 90 minutes of a friendly against Lillestrom in La Manga, substitute cameos at Stoke City and Leicester City followed - the latter on the night Rafa Benitez took charge for the first time. That was to be it for Doumbia, who was never seen again and made his way back to Roma, amid doubts over his actual age and unconfirmed claims that any further pitch time would trigger a permanent move. Loaned out again by Roma to FC Basel for the 2016/17 season an inevitable return to fitness and scoring form saw him score 21 times in all competitions, helping Basel to a domestic league and cup double. June 2017 found Doumbia on the move once again, signing for Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon on a season-long loan from Roma. He then signed for La Liga side Girona FC in August 2018, putting pen to paper on a three-year deal.
However his contract was terminated after Girona were
relegated and he resurfaced at Swiss side, Sion.
That came to an abrupt end in March 2020 though, when he and
eight other players were sacked after refusing to take a pay
cut following the suspension of the season due to the COVID
pandemic.
He joined Maltese side Hamrun Spartans in January 2021 on a
six-month contract but hasn't been seen since.
1960
Steve Bruce born, Corbridge.
(2019-21,
Head Coach)
Northumbrian
born but raised in Walker, Steve's football
education began at Benfield School and nearby
Wallsend Boys Club.
Briefly working as an shipyard apprentice, Bruce
had a failed trial with Burnley before signing for
Gillingham in 1979.
Converting from midfield to defence while at
Priestfield and representing England at U18 level,
five years at Gillingham ended with a move to
Norwich City in 1984 - Newcastle manager Willie
McFaul going as far as meeting Bruce before United
were out-bid.
Scoring an own goal on his debut against Liverpool
but helping the Canaries to League Cup Final
victory over the mackems later that season, Steve
made an £800K move to Manchester United during
December 1987.
Three Premier League titles, three FA Cups, a
League Cup and European Cup-Winners' Cup all
followed during the next nine years.
Moving to Birmingham City in 1996, his final games
came for Sheffield United two years later, by
which time he had been appointed player-manager of
the Blades.
Later managerial appointments followed at
Huddersfield Town, Wigan Athletic, Crystal Palace,
Birmingham City, Wigan (again), the
mackems, Hull City, Aston Villa and Sheffield
Wednesday.
July 2019 then saw him installed as the successor
to Rafa Benitez at SJP, taking charge of the team
midway through a pre-season tournament in China.
At that point, compensation was yet to be agreed
with the Owls for him and assistants Steve Agnew
and Stephen Clemence.
A deal was concluded though and Bruce agreed an
initial three year contract with Newcastle, revealing that
he'd turned down the chance to manage the club in 2004 as
the successor to Sir Bobby Robson.
He reached a half century of PL games in charge with a 2-5 loss at Leeds United
in December 2020.
That 21st defeat was accompanied by 16 wins and 13 draws.
By the time the protracted takeover of the club was finally
concluded in October 2021 Bruce had reached 96 games in
charge and he was kept on for one more, taking him to
1,000 competitive career games as manager.
His final game was a home defeat to Spurs - his
41st loss with 28 wins and 28 draws. That left him
statistically as one of the worst Premier League permanent
managers Newcastle have had; only Steve McClaren having a lower win
percentage.
West Bromwich Albion were next in line to suffer when
appointing him as manager in February 2022. He only lasted
eight months with the Baggies 22nd in the
Championship.
Following his dismissal, new manager Carlos Corberan changed
their fortunes and within three months had taken them up to
eighth.
After almost a year, Bruce resurfaced as Manager of
Blackpool and was immediately named League One Manager
of the Month after winning his first four games.
He was sacked by the Tangerines in October 2025 with the
club second bottom of League One.

Bert Fogg denied a late penalty claim from
the home side for a clear handball - you just know we'd
have had a suitably punning headline; had the world wide

The incident however became notorious, after Hughie
Gallacher
allegedly followed Fogg
into his dressing room and upon finding him bent over, shoved him into his
bathtub fully clothed!
The incident was reported merely as "a scene" following the match and Gallacher was given a two month ban for improper conduct in

boss Joe Kinnear attempted to end speculation that goalkeeper Shay Given was looking
to leave telling The Journal that:
"There is no problem there. He's very happy here, he's very comfortable
at Newcastle United. He won't be leaving - he has no
interest in that whatsoever.
"He loves the football club - he's part of the
