Opportunity missed

Aston Villa  0  Newcastle  0

Newcastle's season got off to a frustrating start at Villa Park on Saturday lunchtime against ten-men Aston Villa in the day's early kick-off.

Ezri Konsa was sent off midway through the second half for pulling down Anthony Gordon who was clear through on goal but the Magpies failed to capitalise on the extra man and never looked like taking all three points.

United should have been in front in just the third minute when Anthony Elanga was left with just the 'keeper to beat and with Gordon on hand for a tap-in he shot at Marco Bizot. Hopefully not his Jon Dahl Tomasson moment....

Elanga caused the home side some problems in a positive opening 45 minutes for the visitors and better crosses from both flanks should have seen United ahead at the break.

But both sides looked off the pace with the hosts in particular failing to trouble Nick Pope, who easily saved one or two direct efforts at him.

At the other end some decent build-up play rarely ended with efforts on target, Gordon hit a low shot that was comfortably stopped and Harvey Barnes completed an awful day by slicing an effort that almost hit the corner flag.

Set pieces were also disappointing with bungled free-kick routines and corners causing few problems for Bizot who looked shaky.

So, a point that most would have taken before kick-off but a slightly disappointing return given the red card.

Full match report to follow.

Team: Pope, Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento, Elanga (J. Murphy 78), Joelinton (L. Miley 83), Guimaraes, Tonali, Barnes (Osula), Gordon.
Subs: Ramsdale, Thiaw, Botman, Hall, Krafth, Park.

Booked: Joelinton.

Jacob Ramsey wasn't considered for selection.

AVFC: Bizot, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne, Kamara, Onana, McGinn (Malen 84), Tielemens, Rogers, Watkins.

Crowd: TBC - including a fully sold out away section. For a change at Villa Park the atmosphere was unnervingly benign. Chants of "Premier League, corrupt as f**k" and "F**k PSR" taken up by both sets of fans.

After the final whistle "One greedy b*stard" was directed towards the absent Alexander Isak.

After the game Eddie Howe said:

To follow.

Pitch prediction

We've partnered with Pitch Publishing, a sports book publisher with an already extensive range of NUFC related titles and several more due for release later in 2025.

Published on Monday, "The Battle for Newcastle United" is journalist Andrew Nagy's first book - an autobiographical account of a lifetime following Newcastle United.

He recounts his story via a 27 game selection, starting with the teenage optimism of the 1992 home win over Bristol City that began Kevin Keegan's second spell and ending with the Champions League humbling of PSG on Tyneside in 2023.

Without giving the game(s) away, Andrew's choices are memorable - but not always for positive reasons. A cast of heroes and villains appear; Ned Kelly and Sir Les are in there alongside JFK, the FCB and the bloke who liked bacon.

To be in with a chance of winning a copy, we asked you to predict the full time score in Newcastle's Premier League opener at Aston Villa this coming Saturday.

Winners names will appear here in due course.

Check out the Pitch catalogue here and find offers on current and future NUFC titles on Amazon here

PS: Andrew Nagy is signing his books at Waterstones in Newcastle from 1pm on Saturday week, August 23rd.

Update:
Ramsey
in Toon

Newcastle have agreed a £38m deal for the Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey, who flew into Tyneside for his medical on Thursday afternoon.

Social media posts from fans on Friday afternoon then pictured him posing with his family at pitchside, holding a Newcastle shirt with number 41 - his Villa number.

24 year-old Ramsey was a team mate of Anthony Gordon at the European U21 championships in 2023, although injury saw him miss England's Final victory over Spain.

14 goals in 136 Premier League appearances since 2020 for Villa Academy graduate Ramsey include an effort against Newcastle at Villa Park in 2023.

His sale has become increasingly inevitable in order to satisfy PSR requirements.

PS: Thursday night brought renewed claims that the stalled deal bringing Brentford's Yoane Wissa to Gallowgate was set to proceed in the coming hours.

The Bees had been negotiating with Bournemouth to sign Dango Ouattara to replace Wissa before allowing him to leave and now seem to have reached agreement with the Cherries for a claimed £35m fee.

Update:
Toon called Malick!

Newcastle's third senior arrival of the window was confirmed on Tuesday evening, AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw completing a permanent move for a claimed £35m fee.

(He has pronounced his surname "Chow" in interviews)

The German international
flew into Tyneside from Italy on Sunday, 48 hours after celebrating his 24th birthday. Completing his medical on Monday, he's available for Saturday's Premier League season opener at Aston Villa.

Malick follows Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale to SJP, reuniting with former Rossoneri colleague Sandro Tonali.

Thiaw had featured briefly against Leeds United in Dublin on Saturday before returning to Milan while his colleagues faced Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Newcastle were credited with an interest in the 6 foot 4 inch-tall defender back in June 2024, before their abortive pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

The Dusseldorf native began his senior career with Bundesliga side Schalke 04 in 2020 (who have a claimed 10% sell-on clause), joining AC Milan two years later on a five year deal.

Facing Newcastle - and Tonali - in the San Siro in 2023, a hamstring injury kept Malick out of the Champions League return meeting on Tyneside four months later.

Thiaw will become the third German international to appear for United in the Premier League after Dietmar Ham
ann and Loris Karius. All three of his senior international caps came back in 2023.

Two further German-born players have also played for the club in that competition: Alan Neilson (who represented Wales) and Joselu (capped by Spain).

And as Thiaw arrives, another German-born player bids Auf Wiedershen to SJP; Stuttgart-born goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimis heading out on loan to Seville.

The Greek international made just one competitive senior appearance as a Magpie, playing 45 minutes against AFC Wimbledon in the League Cup.

Update:
Isak: stand-off continues

Following some conciliatory media comments on Monday to the effect that Alexander Isak was set to remain at United beyond the current transfer window, Tuesday saw those claims rowed back on by influential outlets.

Most notable was David Ornstein's restating of the player's stance via social media: "Alexander Isak adamant he will not play for Newcastle again. Even if window closes without exit 25yo views #NUFC career over + no wish to reintegrate. Club say not for sale but exploring market amid Liverpool interest & striker wants."

No second bid for the player from Liverpool has been received since their initial offer of £110m was dismissed.

Attempts to stimulate interest from continental clubs meanwhile are yet to harvest anything meaningful.

Update:
Pope on pole

Newcastle have confirmed squad numbers for this season, with the only major change seeing Nick Pope inherit the number 1 shirt from the departed Martin Dubravka.

Lewis Hall is assigned the previously-vacant number 3 that he wore in pre-season, while Malick Thiaw takes 12.

The other new arrivals had already sported their allocated numbers in kickabouts.

The number 14 shirt remains in the possession of a certain Swede and for the first time in the Premier League there's nobody wearing 9*

Find squad numbers and other details online here

* thanks to those who correctly pointed out that the 2009/10 season saw the 9 shirt lie idle, following the hasty departure of Obafemi Martins after the 1-6 pre-season defeat at Leyton Orient.

Departure:
Oddy off the books

Tuesday brought confirmation that Newcastle goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos has made a season-long loan switch to Spanish side Seville.

It's reported that deal for the Greek international has no option for a permanent switch and that the majority of his wages will continue to be paid by the Magpies.

Avoiding relegation last season by one point means that there's no European football for Seville this time round.

Vlachodimos was an unexpected arrival at SJP from Nottingham Forest 12 months ago as both clubs sought to comply with PSR requirements and made just a single competitive appearance - in the Carabao Cup.

Youngster secured

Monday saw Newcastle confirm the signing of England youth international captain Isaac Moran, after he refused an offer to remain with Liverpool's academy.

The 16 year-old central defender/defensive midfielder will join up with United's U18 squad as a first year scholar.

Moran's arrival comes after Oliver Goodbrand and Alfie Hutchison were secured from Rangers during the close season to augment Newcastle's academy ranks.

It's also claimed the Magpies have reached agreement to sign Muawiya Ghanem from West Bromwich Albion - a 15 year-old midfielder.

Isak timeline

Sun 04.05 Isak scored his 54th Premier League goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Sun 18.05
Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than surgery was forecast.

Sun 25.05
Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.

Tue 27.05
Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to a minor injury, presumably groin.

Mon 14.07
Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for a week-long training camp.

Tue 15.07
The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.

Sat 19.07
Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming tour of Asia.

Mon 21.07
Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park but reportedly cut short the session.

(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)

Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.

Wed 23.07
Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace) Isak.

Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club".

The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial status.

Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would remain a Newcastle player.

Sun 27.07
Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.

Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.

Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak and he remained a Magpie.

Wed 30.07 Spanish media claims Isak is training alone in San Sebastian.

Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.

Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train separately from the rest of the senior squad.

Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol, Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.

2025/26:
TV times

The Premier League have confirmed their live TV picks for September, with one Newcastle game rescheduled:

Sat 13.09.2025 Wolves (h) 3pm no live UK TV
Sat 20.09.2025 Bournemouth (a) 3pm no live UK TV
Sun 28.09.2025 Arsenal (h) 4.30pm Sky

The Arsenal game falls between Newcastle's midweek Carabao Cup Third Round tie* and the second round of Champions League fixtures, spread across Tuesday September 30th and Wednesday October 1st.

With reference to the Bournemouth away game, just because it hasn't been selected for live TV, that doesn't confirm 100% that it will be a 3pm Saturday kick-off.

The first round of Champions League fixtures take place on the preceding Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: were Newcastle to be in action on the Thursday, that would result in the Bournemouth game moving to the Sunday.

While the Spurs v Wolves game picked for Sky on Sunday 28th is liable to change if Spurs are playing a Champions League tie on the 30th, there's no similar advice regarding our game v Arsenal on the same day - reason unknown.

The situation mirrors for our game regardless of that: were ourselves or Arsenal to be playing in the Champions League on the 30th then we would not meet in the PL on the 28th.

So in real terms, only the Wolves game is now confirmed, with the other three liable to possible change in the days following the Champions League draw on August 28th.

* that is split over two successive midweeks, with teams involved in the Champions League assured of playing their Carabao Cup tie during second of the two weeks.

There are no scheduled rail works between London Kings Cross on the day of the Arsenal game. For once.

The Bournemouth game looks unaffected by rail engineering work on the Saturday. Were it to be played on the Sunday, trains would still run direct to and from London but with average journey times extended by 45 minutes and trains not calling at either Basingstoke or Winchester.

On This Day in History
16th August

Born Or Died:

1917 John "Jack" Fairbrother born,
Burton upon Trent. (1947-52)

Beginning his career at hometown club Burton Town, goalkeeper Jack signed for Preston North End in 1937 but was still to make his debut when war broke out.

Serving as a policeman in Blackburn during the war, Jack played most of his football for North End, with occasional outings for Blackburn Rovers, Burnley and Chester.

A competitive senior debut at the age of 29 followed for Preston in 1946, but within 12 months he'd made a £6,500 switch to United, ahead of their 1947/48 promotion campaign.

Between the posts for a 6-1 opening day home win over Plymouth Argyle, Jack became first choice custodian at SJP, playing in the 1951 FA Cup Final victory over Blackpool.

However, a broken collar bone saw him lose his place to Ronnie Simpson in August 1951 and after failing to win back his place, Jack left Gallowgate 12 months later.

Appointed as player/ manager of non-league Peterborough United, Fairbrother later took over at Coventry City in December 1953.

Later spells coaching the Israel national team and Consett led to a second stint at London Road with the Posh between 1962 and 1964.

Living in the Northamptonshire village of Titchmarsh after his retirement, Jack's death was recorded in October 1999 - by which time he had settled in Lincolnshire.

Jack is remembered fondly on Tyneside for his extrovert behaviour and habit of wearing white policeman's gloves when playing.

1924 Bobby Mitchell born, Glasgow, Scotland. (1941-61)

"Bobby Dazzler" captured the hearts of a generation of Newcastle fans with his stylish wing play - and played a significant role in our three FA Cup Final successes of the '50s.

Beginning his career with Third Lanark, Mitch served in the Royal Navy and joined United in February 1949 at a cost of £17,000.

Debuting the following month in a 2-1 home derby victory, Bobby then struck his first goal during a 3-2 win over Arsenal at SJP a fortnight later.

A crowd favourite and a significant factor in United's resurgence during the 1950s, Bobby appeared in all three Wembley FA Cup Final successes for the club.

However, international recognition was to be fleeting, with his only two full Scotland caps coming shortly after Newcastle's 1951 FA Cup victory over Blackpool.

Selected for two friendlies at Hampden Park, Mitch scored in a 3-1 victory over Denmark  and then appeared in a 1-0 success against France - with future Magpie team mate Jimmy Scoular also appearing in both games.

Injury saw his career start to wind down in the 1958/59 season and he played his final senior game for the club away at Sheffield Wednesday in March 1961.

40,000 fans attended Bobby's testimonial match at Gallowgate that October, by which time he was playing for Berwick Rangers.

Taking over as Gateshead player-manager in May 1963, Mitch later ran The Cradlewell and Lochside pubs in Newcastle's East End.

He died in April 1993.

1942 Death of Bob Foyers, 74.
(1895-97)

1961 Death of Archie Livingstone, 45.
(1935-38)

1964 Barry Venison born, Consett, Co. Durham. (1992-95)

One of a select group of players to have played for Newcastle and the mackems and retained their popularity amongst both sets of fans, Barry began his career at Roker Park and captained aged 20.

Leading his side out in the 1985 League Cup Final at Wembley, Venison joined Liverpool a year later, winning two championship and an FA Cup during his six seasons at Anfield.

Brought to SJP by Kevin Keegan as part of his summer 1992 squad overhaul, Venison was an integral part of the Newcastle side who gained promotion and made an instant impact on the Premiership.

Playing latterly as a midfielder, Venison hit the only goal of his United career with a well- remembered shot at the Gallowgate End against Aston Villa in February 1995.

Within three months though, his Magpies career was over and Venison was reunited with former Liverpool boss Graeme Souness at Turkish side Galatasaray - Newcastle making a £500K profit on the £750K sale.

Venison did return to SJP in April 1996, by then in the colours of Southampton. Forced into retirement by injury, he then shed his trademark daft hair and garish garb after reinventing himself as a TV football pundit.

However, he rather abruptly disappeared from our screens during 2004, emigrating to the USA and becoming a property developer in the Orange County area of California.

Later the President of Vantage Financial Solutions and Vantage Home Solutions, 2015 found him returning to football after joining the backroom staff of US League side Orange County Blues.

July of that year saw Venison take on the role of Technical Director but left 12 months later.

Barry then founded a company installing hotel furnishings in the Los Angeles area.

1988 Tomi Ameobi born, Newcastle.
(2004-05)

Brother of Shola and Sammy, Tomi played a handful of Academy games in the 2004/05 season before moving on to Leeds United.

Two first team cup outings in the 2007/08 season and a loan to Scunthorpe United followed before his release from Elland Road.

Tomi then joined Doncaster Rovers and appeared for them in a pre-season home win over a Magpies side featuring brother Shola.

Subsequent loan spells at Grimsby Town and Mansfield Town but Tomi was without a club in summer 2009, having trials at Hereford United, Gateshead and Bradford City.

Spotted playing in the Northern Alliance for Gosforth Bohemians, Ameobi signed for Forest Green Rovers in September 2009.

2010 then saw Tomi back in the North East, with Northern League side Whitley Bay before departing for Iceland, where he played for BI Bolungarvik and then Grindavik.

2013 found him at Finnish league side Vaasan Palloseura before the next leg of his world tour in 2014 at Canadian side Edmonton.

By 2017 he was with US League side FC Cincinnati and he played with them after they were admitted to the MLS a year later.

Returned to Edmonton in 2019 for a year, Tomi studied for a law degree with the Open University and worked at a practice in Edmonton.

1989 Moussa Sissoko born, Le Blanc-Mesnil, France (2013-17)

Following Mathieu Debuchy, Mapou Yanga -Mbiwa, Yoan Gouffran and Massadio Haidara. midfielder Sissoko became the fifth arrival at SJP in the January 2013 window.

The French international joined on a six and a half year deal from Toulouse for a claimed £2m (our poor form resulting in a deal being brought forward from the following summer, when he would have become a free agent).

Debuting in our next game at Aston Villa just days after arriving, Moussa then enjoyed a memorable home bow later that same week, netting twice in a 3-2 win over Chelsea.

Powering down the United right, Sissoko's searching runs brought the SJP crowd to their feet and him a brace, including the winning goal in the very last seconds.

Another goal followed at home to Southampton and by the end of that season he was a crowd favourite - despite missing the last three games with ankle trouble.

Moussa's second season as a Magpie was to mirror the team's fortunes; increasingly consistent and strong for the first half - but fitful and forgettable thereafter, coinciding with the departure of Yohan Cabaye.

Precisely when the player was required to demonstrate his alleged dressing room dominance and lead by example, Sissoko declined markedly on the field - a stance echoed by other senior players, as results and displays declined alarmingly.

Netting the winner against West Bromwich Albion at SJP in November, it was to be four months before he found the net again, scoring twice at Hull.

Playing alongside club colleague Debuchy and SJP old boys Cabaye and Loic Remy in Brazil, Moussa became only the sixth current Magpie to score in the World Cup Finals when finding the net against Switzerland in Salvador.

Sissoko's 2015/16 season was mixed to say the least. Under McClaren he looked sulky and erratic - especially when played out wide -  but inspirational when the mood took him.

Benitez gave him the captaincy which he seemed to respond to and it looked like he might drag the team out of the relegation mire. But that wasn't to be the case and his excellent form for France in Euro 2016 underlined just what he was capable of.

Remaining a Magpie through pre-season without kicking a ball, Newcastle were five games into their Championship season when Sissoko finally left the club.

Making a deadline day switch to Spurs for a mighty £30m (although Everton at one stage believed he was their player), much was expected of Moussa at White Hart Lane.

In the event Sissoko endured a miserable beginning to life as a Cockerel; starting just 12 times in all competitions, failing to score and soon falling from grace with Spurs fans.

Amid talk of his departure, August 2017 saw him back at SJP for the first game of the season as he started for Spurs, his every touch greeted with boos by home fans.

Similar treatment from the crowd was evident almost exactly a year later when the Cockerels won on Tyneside again.

Moussa ended the following season playing in the Champions League Final loss to Liverpool - giving away an early penalty.

Joining Watford in August 2021 after featuring for France in the delayed Euro 2020 tournament, he was unable to help prevent the Hornets being relegated.

Signing for French side Nantes in 2022, Sissoko then returned to Watford in July 2024, joining the Championship side on a two-year deal.

Our Brazilian maestro graced the programme cover for a midweek kickabout at London Road and duly went goal crazy, in what has to be called "a romp".

Your correspondent actually believed that this result was the precursor to a successful season for Willie McFaul's New Model Army.
That belief lasted precisely 31 seconds at Goodison Park in the first league game....

2004 Our Academy side won their first pre-season game at the third attempt, but it was a close-run thing against Northern Alliance side Walker Central at Monkchester Road.

2011 Two alleged Toon targets appeared to be on their way - Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga and PSV left back Erik Pieters. However, despite strong media claims about their moves to Tyneside, neither arrived.

Maiga joined West Ham in July 2012, while Pieters ended up at Stoke a year later.

2012
Ajax midfielder Vurnon Anita officially signed a five year deal at SJP. Ajax later confirmed on their official website that a fee of €8.5m (£6.67m) was agreed.

2017 Newcastle's

A fee of £5m secured the 27 year-old German born player raised in Spain.

Dylan Stephenson was on target for the black and whites
