Bellissimo!

Newcastle  2  Brentford  1

An astonishing finish from Sandro Tonali gave United three points at St.James' Park on Wednesday night, ending Brentford's sequence of five successive Premier League away wins in the process.

There seemed no danger when the Italian took the ball level with the six yard box towards the right hand touchline in front of the East Stand, but he immediately lashed it right-footed past the startled Mark Flekken - the third time he's done so against the Dutch 'keeper at the Leazes End this season.

An unchanged line-up from that which started at Wembley 17 days earlier were roared on the field before kick-off, Wor Flags mounting separate displays in three stands including one depicting the Carabao Cup.

A first half of few clear-cut chances for either side ended with the hosts going ahead in added time, Jacob Murphy centering from the right for Alexander Isak to convert a first-time shot from close range - aided by Mbeumo falling on his backside as the cross arrived.

Isak had looked a certain scorer seconds earlier when breaking into the box, but took too many touches before opting to pass the ball rather than shoot - Harvey Barnes offside by the time he belatedly headed in.

Clad in a displeasing pink and purple change kit, the Bees pressed United back more and more as the second period unfolded; levelling from the spot after Nick Pope collided with Yoan Wissa in the box and Bryan Mbeumo converted the resultant penalty.

The visitors then came closing to scoring again almost immediately; Ethan Pinnock nodding Kevin Schade's cross onto the post, Pope gratefully grabbing the rebound to avert further danger.

A see-saw final quarter of the game saw opportunities for both sides but Tonali's memorable strike was the only time that anyone got a meaningful effort on target.

Brentford's no-nonsense approach of punting the ball upfield meant that Dan Burn was kept busy with aerial challenges, having spent much of the game shadowing midfielder Yehor Yarmolyuk.

The Cup Final hero almost blotted his copybook during eight minutes of time added on, stumbling as the impressive Schade worked the ball over from the right edge of the box.

Thankfully though Mikkel Damsgaard's first-time shot from 12 yards cleared the Gallowgate crossbar by a considerable distance.

Victory saw Newcastle reach the 50 point mark for the season and maintain fifth place in the table with nine games remaining.

Not a classic by any means, but a valuable win over a well-drilled side who hadn't lost anywhere on the road since their Carabao Cup defeat here last December.

Given the epic nature of the last few weeks round these parts, this had all the hallmarks of a rude awakening.

To their credit though, Eddie Howe and his players did enough to avoid the banana skin and refocus on the task of improving on the European Conference League playoff place that they already possess.

Team: Pope, Trippier (Krafth 89), Livramento, Burn, Schar, Joelinton, Guimaraes, Tonali, Barnes (Miley 90+8), J.Murphy (Willock 66), Isak (Wilson 66).
Subs n/u: Dubravka, Neave, Osula, Shahar, Longstaff.

Booked: Schar

Joelinton now has three games in which to avoid the booking which will land him with a two-game ban and Burn needs to avoid two cautions in the same period to avoid suffering the same fate.

Goals: Isak 45+2, Tonali 74

BFC: Flekken, Lewis-Potter, Pinnock (Ajer 83), Collins, van den Berg, Janelt (Damsgaard 59), Norgaard, Schade, Yarmoliuk (Maghoma 83), Mbeumo, Wissa.
Subs n/u: Kayode, Ji-Soo, Konak, Mee, Morgan, Valdimarsson.

Goal: Mbeumo 66pen

Booked: Lewis-Potter

Crowd: 52,021. Among those present were Alan Shearer and Mick Quinn.

Eddie Howe:

"It wasn't pretty. I don't think we played as well as we did against Liverpool
(in the Carabao Cup Final).

(Sandro) Tonali has a thunderbolt of a strike when he does go for goal. I am mightily relieved to see it hit the net.

"Always after the international break the games are different. We had players in different physical moments and we looked to have picked up a few minor injuries but hopefully nothing to keep anyone out of the next game.

"We are relieved to come through with the three points."

date revealed

The Premier League confirm that next season's fixtures will be released at 9am on Wednesday 18.06.2025.

The 2025/26 season will run from Saturday 16.08.2025 through to Sunday 24.05.2026.

Latest:
Fab: deal done

Speaking to the media on Tuesday morning, Eddie Howe confirmed that Fabian Schar was in the process of signing a contract extending his stay on Tyneside.

The former Swiss international defender turns 34 in December and has made 220 appearances scoring 19 goals since his £3m arrival from Deportivo La Coruna ahead of the 2018/19 season.

That leaves a trio of current squad members out of contact this summer - Jamaal Lascelles, Callum Wilson and John Ruddy - plus Mark Gillespie and Jamal Lewis.

Unhappy hour

On-loan Magpie Travis Hernes found himself in hot water following his current side Aalborg's 0-4 home defeat in the Danish SuperLiga last weekend.

The 19 year-old midfielder was one of three players who made what AaB described as an "untimely night club trip" following a squad meal and were spotted by disgruntled fans, with photos soon appearing on social media.

Hernes and the other two players issued a joint public apology for breaking club rules and the matter will be dealt with internally, said an AaB spokesman.

Robert ruins record

Newcastle U18s  1  Everton U18s  2

Coming into Saturday's home game on the back of a four game winning run, Newcastle U18s fell behind after just 44 seconds when Everton's Harvey Fraser fired home.

The visitors then came close to doubling their lead just seconds later; only a vital clearance inside the six yard box denying Adelaide Akirkin.

To complete a frantic start, Magpies goalkeeper Will Anderson was unable to continue after sustaining a leg injury in the seventh minute. He was eventually stretchered off to be replaced by Tyler Jones.

The substitute custodian was beaten in first half added time, Fraser's corner kick from the Everton right was headed home unopposed by Ray Robert.

Playing with the wind in the second period the Magpies charged upfield straight from the start, Joe Brayson mis-kicking when well placed in front of goal.

United did reduce the arrears when Aaron Epia looped a 61st minute header over Seve Patrick and into the Toffees net, but no equaliser followed despite heavy pressure and seven minutes of added time.

Team: Anderson (Jones 7), Bloomer (Tika-Lemba 81), Cogdon, Johnson, Epia (Durrant 67), Taylor, Fitzgerald, Harper (Alabi 81), Wooster, Brayson (O'Donovan 81), Ferreira.

Booked: Cogdon, Alabi, Ferreira

Away win:
Good(ison) Friday

Now just weeks away from leaving Goodison Park, the Everton Heritage Society have uncovered extended footage of a Newcastle victory at the Toffees almost exactly 70 years ago online here

60,068 fans were on the blue side of Stanley Park to see Newcastle win 2-1 on Good Friday 1955 thanks to goals from George Hannah and Vic Keeble.

Newcastle went ahead when ex-Toffees amateur George Hannah shot home following a Len White corner kick in the 17th minute (11.37 on the video).

Everton soon levelled through Wally Fielding (15.50), but the Magpies collected both points when Liverpool-born Hannah centred for Keeble to head in from point-blank range in the 75th minute (49.55).

That was enough to end United's five game winless league run in Division One and just a month later, they lifted the FA Cup at Wembley.

On This Day in History
3rd April

Born Or Died:

1906 Thomas Lang born, Larkhall, Scotland. (1926-34)

Beginning his career with hometown side Larkhall Thistle, outside left Tommy moved to SJP in October 1926 at a cost of £110.

Deputising for Stan Seymour in a 1-3 loss at Cardiff in September 1927, the diminutive Lang established himself more in the side during the following season and was an ever-present during the 1931/32 season.

Netting in our March 1932 FA Cup semi-final win over Chelsea, Tommy was part of the side who then overcame Arsenal at Wembley Stadium to take the trophy.

Departing from Tyneside in December 1934 for Huddersfield Town (in a part-exchange deal with Wilf Bott), he later moved on to play for Manchester United, Swansea Town and Queen of the South.

Turning out for Larkhall during WW2, Lang played on when league football resumed and joined Ipswich Town in 1946, retiring the following summer and joining the backroom staff at Portman Road thereafter.

Lang died in May 1988.

1927 Tom Paterson born, Lochore, Scotland. (1950-52)

Having appeared for Raith Rovers and Lochgelly Albert in his native Scotland, forward Tom joined Leicester City in 1948.

A £2,500 move to SJP two years later was followed by a Magpies debut on Christmas Day 1950 in a 1-2 loss at Middlesbrough.

Tom then had to wait until a 3-1 home win over Chelsea the following October before getting another chance at senior level.

Leaving United in the summer of 1952, he joined Watford for £750 and played three seasons for the Hornets before returning North of the border, with Berwick Rangers.

After two years at Shielfield, Tom was forced into retirement by a knee injury. Settling in Gateshead he passed away in August 2015.

1984 Death of Joe Wilson, 73.
(1933-36)

1988 Tim Krul born, Den Haag, Holland.
(2005-17)

Goalkeeper signed from his hometown club by United in 2005 on the recommendation of continental scout Ray Clarke.

Appearing at both reserve and academy level for the Magpies, an early hint of Tim's levels of ability and confidence came in the FA Youth Cup when he twice played a part in penalty shootout wins - and scored the winning spot kick in a victory over Stoke.

His "unbelievable" first team debut came in the UEFA Cup at Palermo in November 2006 when Shay Given and Steve Harper were both out injured. However Tim then picked up a knee injury during the warm-up before a Carling Cup tie at Watford days later - although he wasn't even in the squad!

August 2007 then saw him join SPL side Falkirk on loan from United, playing 26 times before a shoulder injury in January 2008 curtailed his time at The Bairns.

After returning to full fitness, a second spell out on loan saw him earning rave reviews while appearing for Carlisle United.

The departure of Shay Given in early 2009 saw Tim return and assume joint number two duties with Fraser Forster, behind first-choice Steve Harper.

That in itself was a notable feat, after Tim had looked certain to leave in the summer of 2008, when a deal was agreed with Feyenoord - only for Director of Football Dennis Wise to change his mind and cancel it, with the player at the airport.

Playing no part in our relegation from the Premier League, Tim saw service in the Championship opener when appearing as a half time replacement for head injury victim Harper at West Bromwich Albion.

An inspired 45 minutes saw him keep a clean sheet and help earn a 1-1 draw, a feat he repeated with another interval introduction at home to Swansea City.

Given starts in all five cup fixtures by Chris Hughton, Tim was then selected for the senior XI in a league game for for the first time, in the season closer at QPR.

Harper's injury at Everton in September 2010 saw Krul come off the bench to keep a clean sheet, remaining in the side  until Steve returned four months later.

But the start of the 2011/12 season saw Tim installed as the first choice custodian and a series of outstanding performances justified Alan Pardew's decision.

The following season saw him remain our regular custodian, before an ankle injury against Metalist in February 2013 kept him out for almost two months.

A knee issue then sidelined him during the closing weeks of the following season, during which Krul wasn't always at his best but gave of the finest goalkeeping displays in Premier League history.

Making no fewer than fourteen noteworthy saves to preserve his clean sheet, Tim was the bedrock of Newcastle's 1-0 win at White Hart Lane in November 2013.

Internationally, some fine U21 displays led to a first senior Dutch cap in 2011 against Brazil; and a competitive debut following in a World Cup qualifier against Turkey during September 2012.

A place in the 2014 World Cup Final squad then followed for Tim - and an incredible night in Salvador during which he wrote his name into tournament history.

With just seconds remaining of a Quarter Final tie against Costa Rica that was still 0-0 at the end of extra time, Krul arrived from the bench to replace 'keeper Jasper Cillessen purely for the shootout.

And the judgment of coach Louis Van Gaal was vindicated as Tim saved two spot kicks to help his side to a 4-3 victory in what was only his second competitive outing and sixth cap in total. Unbelievable.

That was Krul's only involvement in the World Cup as all three outfield substitutes had been used by the time Holland's semi final against Argentina went to penalties.

A 3-0 win over Brazil in the 3rd/4th place final then ensured that the United player returned with a bronze medal.

Retaining his place as United's first-choice custodian, an ankle injury sidelined Tim for ten league and cup games from November 2014 - understudy Rob Elliot then crocked and replaced by rookie Jak Alnwick.

Playing his part in an ultimately successful relegation battle, Tim's season was halted by a knee injury suffered playing against Kazakhstan in October 2015.

Joining Ajax on a season-long loan the following August, the intention was to improve Krul's fitness and gain some pitch time in first team games.

However, despite successful reserve runouts and a first team appearance in a friendly during the January season break, he failed to break into the Ajax first team and returned to SJP the following January.

Looking set for a temporary switch to Premier League Watford, Krul instead made a swift return to Holland on deadline day, joining AZ Alkmaar on a five month loan deal and debuting in a 2-4 loss to PSV Eindhoven.

Conceding 18 goals in his first six games, Krul turned from villain to hero in a Dutch Cup semi-final against Cambuur: keeping a clean sheet before making the save to win the resultant penalty shootout.

Krul finally exited from United in August 2017, joining fellow Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion on loan before a permanent switch after striking a deal with Newcastle to become a free agent.

Used only by Seagulls boss Chris Hughton for Cup matches, Tim turned down a new deal and dropped into the Championship, putting pen to paper on a two year deal with Norwich City in July 2018.

The following four seasons were anything but dull for the Canaries and Tim; title winners in 2019, relegated in last place in 2020, title winners in 2021 and relegated in last place again in 2022!

Agreeing an extended deal to 2024, the 2022/23 campaign saw Tim lose his regular starting place to Angus Gunn, shortly after having overtaken his Toon league appearance tally for Norwich.

A Premier League return then came when signing for newly-promoted Luton Town, occupying the bench for both games against Newcastle but restricted only to cup games as the Hatters spent a single season in the top flight.

Willie Wardrope thought he'd put the hosts ahead early in the second period - only to see it disallowed for passing through a poorly-tethered piece of netting.

However the constant pressure finally paid off and John McDonald netted twice.

1896 Earlier the same day, SJP hosted a North Eastern League fixture between Newcastle's "A" team and Willington.

Two up in the opening two minutes through Carr and Gillespie, a spot kick conversion from Blackett just on half time looked to have put the outcome beyond any doubt.

Playing down the slope after the interval however, Willington scored three times to claim a point.

2006 Newcastle's second string emulated the first team and Academy sides by beating the mackems 3-2 on Tyneside to complete a home clean sweep against the red & whites.
